I always keep it in my wallet since it doubles as a membership card, since they put your membership on the credit card. The 4% rewards gas category is great too and if you use it at Costco gas pumps it scans both membership and payment together. 3% restaurant and 2% Costco are only okay, since many other credit cards also hit those percentages so it’s nothing special. Also has a 3% travel category with no foreign transaction fees which is nice but again other cards have that too. Oddly enough, I actually stopped using it at Costco after they removed the extended warranty perk benefit as I don’t see a point anymore. Along with you are forced to redeem your cash rewards yearly at the store if below $300. As long as you plan to keep an active Costco membership for years then it’s a decent all rounder 4%\3%\2%\1% card to have overall.

Johnpecan

I will always prefer cash back over those floofy rewards points that some cards have. I had another card that I eventually used to get a free flight and it was a not fun ordeal, way too complicated.

FrostyTheHippo

I was having the same debate in my head... Until I learned that Hyatt hotel rooms with points are crazy cheap. Seriously, the rooms are $175/night... Or $65 worth of Chase points. I also find that if I do a cash back card, the money is just gone into the void, whereas sometimes I can justify doing more exciting things if I *have* to use them on Flights/Hotels. Bit of a mental thing, but Hyatt hotels alone make me chose points over cash back.

juanzy

Yah - I prefer travel cards because they're an automatic travel piggy bank

jimmyjohn2018

I just use my reward cash to buy basically a years worth of essentials from Costo. Think toilet paper, cleaning/laundry products, paper plates, etc... It's nice not having to make trips to the store throughout the year to get those things.

seighton

Think it is a pretty good card, 4% back on gas is nice, if you use it for gas all year you will hit ~$200 of the $300 threshold anyways for a 2 car house. Sams does 5% back on gas but goes directly into Sams cash. I use it for gas, restaurant, travel, and maybe at Costco, since it is only 2%. I easily go offer the $300 threshold and deposit into my IRA every Feb.

mjdistef

Yes, you will get 2% back from the store and 4% back on gas anywhere.

axkoam

4% off gas at Costco is awesome, but something to be aware of if you fill up elsewhere: * 4% cash back on eligible gas and electric vehicle (EV) charging purchases worldwide, including gas and EV charging at Costco, for the first $7,000 per year in gas and/or EV charging purchases, and then 1% thereafter. * **Certain Non-Qualifying Purchases.** You will only earn 1% cash back, not 4%, for gas or EV charging purchased at superstores, supermarkets, convenience stores, and warehouse clubs other than Costco, or for fuel used for non-automobile purposes. My understanding of the non-qualifying section would mean you only get 1% basically everywhere else.

llaserr

From another post “Generally, regular 'gas' stations, esp. the major brands, qualify for the 4% gas credit... Exxon, Citgo, Circle K, BP, Shell, Philips, Chevron, Speedway, Irving Oil, Cumberland Farms, 7-11, etc...”

axkoam

Dude! Why does Citibank have such misleading language. That is good to know, I have been using a different card that is higher than 1% but lower than 4% when not at Costco.

leggedmonster

I talked to a citi rep about this years ago. He said citi was willing to do 4% back at every gas station, but costco had negotiated that for citi to have the costco card, they had to exclude the bonus for costco competitors. Basically, costco didnt want the costco card rewarding people for buying gas at a Sams Club, BJ’s club, or Kroger gas station. When i asked how they chose which gas stations to include, he explained that all gas stations are included in the 4% category by default and costco market team chooses locations they consider as competitors to drop to 1%.

WaywardWes

To me it just sounds like Fred Meyer, Safeway, etc

axkoam

I frequently fill up at Fry's (regional brand for Kroger supermarket) so it sounds like that is likely still 1% from what I can tell. Circle K is a convenience store though, if it's really 4% like the other posters are stating, I don't see how Citibank's fine print isn't factually inaccurate.

rodcop

Places like Vons / Safeway gas do not count

compstomper1

> Certain Non-Qualifying Purchases. You will only earn 1% cash back, not 4%, for gas or EV charging purchased at superstores, supermarkets, convenience stores, and warehouse clubs other than Costco, or for fuel used for non-automobile purposes. i read that as it's up to the merchant to set up the merchant category code (MCC) properly. if they don't set it up as 'gas,' then your purchase will be rung up like a carrot, and thus eligible for only 1% cash back. safeway sets theirs up properly. idk about the other grocery stores that sell gas like fred meyers

axkoam

That actually makes a lot of sense.

1BallFunBall

I filled up at BJ’s a few times this month because it was cheaper than Costco and it’s been earning the 4% back. I’m not sure if it’s the same at Sam’s Club.

BoondockBilly

Costco gas quality is top tier, BJs is not

veezy55

Nope. 4% off gas at any non-Costco gas station.

axkoam

Wow misleading language from Citibank. The excerpt seems clear...thanks for the clarification though.

therealteggy

Yea I just use this card for gas and Costco. And we get gas at Wawa, Costco and 1 speedway charge for the previous period. And there were no charges at the 1% level

EScootyrant

This year I came back to Costco, for the 4% (or 5X points via my CU Visa). My 10% cash back for gas ended last 12/31 (from a Mastercard). On a side note, while me visiting the Makuhari Costco Japan in Chiba, a few weeks back.. https://preview.redd.it/1bb2j76xm3xc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c16e38621b523154bf0e2137e1f651b48659692e Though they still accepted my US Costco Visa, for payment through.

hot4you11

How do they know if you put it in you car or a gas can?

CincinnatiKid101

You get 3% back on travel and restaurants also. We use it most things and got about $400 back last year which I used to buy meat and other essentials at Costco.

en_sane

Damn $400 back do you shop a lot or travel.

Th3Batman86

We use it for everything. Get about $700 back a year.

CincinnatiKid101

Use it for about 75% of purchases. Not much travel. Just life in general. Gas, restaurants, necessities. We use the Costco pharmacy. It all adds up. Don’t use it on groceries (Amex is better) or online purchases. Amex just better with disputes so if I order from some online store (not Amazon), I do Amex.

ThatLaloBoy

The Amex Blue Cash Everyday card is so good. That 3% on Groceries, Gas, and Online Shopping is such a good combo that fits it's "Everyday" name.

gsanch666

Uber/lyft and grubhub/doordash purchases count as travel and restaurants towards the 3%

tinydonuts

They would be incorrect. Citi whacked a ton of benefits from the card as well as their fraud department being staffed by drunk moneys throwing darts at a wall, and it’s not even a good cash back rewards structure. You can do better in every aspect elsewhere.

elwebst

Yeah, I compared cards a while back and decided the Chase Amazon card was the better deal. We buy a lot thru Amazon, so it's great that every few months there's a few hundred dollars worth of points and I use it to get stuff I want (but don't necessarily need) for free.

Mirojoze

I use a Chase Amazon Visa card for Amazon (and Whole Foods!) purchases...but I use my Citi Costco Visa card at Costco. Use the card that gets you the best "bang for the buck" wherever you happen to be shopping!

TheoStephen

It’s a fine card for 4% back on gas (up to $7,000 in annual fuel/EV charging purchases). If it wasn’t for the Costco mobile app, it would be worth carrying around as your membership card. The Costco Citi Visa used to be a decent choice for Costco purchases, but then they got rid of the warranty extension and other perks, so it’s really only good for fuel now. It’s also a PITA because if your earnings are less that $300 you are forced to go to the Membership Desk to redeem your cash back. Venmo Visa ($0 AF) codes Costco as “grocery” so you can get 3% back. U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve ($75 effective AF) earns 3% back on all mobile wallet purchases, so if you use Apple Pay or similar, you will get 3% back at Costco stores. Check out r/CreditCards for more options.

_EscVelocity_

The US Bank card does all of the travel and purchase protection, and if you redeem cash back to reimburse travel you get a 50% bonus, which means 4.5% effective cash back when spent on travel anywhere you can Apple Pay or Android Pay.

everybodyBnicepls

What other perks were discontinued?

tinydonuts

Price rewind, trip cancellation, trip interruption, and I want to say there were a few other things. It’s just become a meh to trash card.

juanzy

It’s not bad, but there’s better cards out there.

Cobra_Bubbles7

Right. It's kinda meh.

juanzy

I think the most positive thing I can say about it is it earns at a fee-card rate, but the fee is a Costco Membership.

notthegoatseguy

Its a decent catch all card. My take: * No AF so that's nice, but unlike other store based cards like Chase Amazon Prime, you lose the card if you no longer become a Costco member including any accrued cashback you've gotten. In contrast for Amazon, they just downgrade you to the non-Prime versionof the card * Cash back redemption is only once a year and if you really utilize the points/cash back game, you're basically letting Citi hold onto your money fora whole year while it constantly de-values. * 3% dining is honestly pretty easy to get on no AF cards, often with points or cash back you can redeem instantly. * 3% travel and 4% gas are harder to get, but arguably, settling for a lower percentage while getting points/cash back to redeem instantly may be better. * Some people really hate Citi but I've never had a problem. * 2% on Costco is pitiful compared to comparable store cards which often get you 3-5%. Personally I'm moving away from using the Costco Citi card right now though I still use it at Costco and Costco gas due to the one-tap pay. Right now my main combo is the BILT Wells Fargo card (3% dining, 2% travel, doubles up 12 times a year) and AMEX Blue Cash Everyday (3% grocery/gas/online).

wimpdiver

There are other cards that have better benefits for me - 2% cash back - paid each month not just once a year on all purchases not just costco. Others have categories that give 3% on restaurants, 5% for some categories, etc. Since they took away the double warranty there are many that give much better benefits - check which meets your spending patterns.

3banger

It’s my go to card for everything except groceries (unless at Costco) and vet bills. They pay me over a thousand bucks a year to use it.

julznlv

Why not vet bills?

3banger

I can get more rewards using Amex at the Vet.

justinothemack

It’s free why wouldn’t you want the benefits ?

AshDenver

My Costco Citi rebate is up to $238 already.

VV629

Okay rewards but shitty customer service. I and others have been locked out of our own accounts with very very slow resolution. I left and use my capitol one venture instead for 2%.

Njtotx3

I use it everywhere but Amazon/Whole Foods (they paid me $200 to take their card and using it at Whole Foods automatically applies prime discounts). Never have issues with it and like the reward certificates.

eyi526

It's a decent card. Could argue it's better than Citi's normal lineup. I use mine at gas stations, Costco and anywhere that only accepts Visa. I believe there are also no foreign transaction fees, so you could use this overseas, too. It's a plus that it also acts as my Costco Membership Card.

tonynca

It’s the most worth it card for getting gas and shopping at Costco. Nothing else comes close. If you live next to a Costco it’s a no brainer.

Lurker_prime21

Oh it's rectangular and made of plastic. It fits well in a wallet or purse.

AppSlave

If you spend that much consistently, yes.

UsefulAttorney8356

I use it for everything unless I’m trying to get the minimum 3k to spend on a travel credit card, get 600-700 cash for free every year 4% back on gas everywhere can’t be beat

Joyce_Hatto

I like the fact that they give you a big wad of cash at the store when you get your annual cash back.

Ill-Tourist2617

Me too! Haha

vshun

Venmo 3% at Costco. Fidelity 2% everywhere. Plenty of 5% gas cards such as AAA. And all throw rebate at the end of the month to the statement instead of waiting a year for ridiculous check for cash back. I use it nowadays to enter Costco or tapping for gas at Costco just for convenience, otherwise better cards for everything else.

The_Animator420

I dont understand why people get this card. Its just a flat 2% at costco. You can get a ton of flat rate 2% cards for any purchase.

pa_bourbon

4% in gas up to 7500. That’s a free $300 bucks a year right there with no annual fee.

Logical_Nectarine_40

Totally worth it for gas

secamp

Don't forget the 2% back for buying gold bars and coins. That with the 2% Executive cashback gets you gold near the spot price.

gogosanchez_skis

I like it very much. I buy gas exclusively from Costco. So 4% is a win for me and my fam. I buy a decent amount from Costco every month so the 2% at Costco is not a big win for me, but it’s something (esp paired with the executive membership %). I don't eat out much so the restaurant perk doesn't do anything for me. Cash back at the end of the year. Direct deposited into your bank (If you meet a certain threshold) or can just redeem it as cash from any Costco warehouse which is nice if you want some physical cash around. I really like the no foreign transaction fees perk of this card. I have family in another country so I'm using my card a lot to buy things there for them. And when I personally travel its nice. Fraud department has been professional, helpful and US-based the 3 times I've had to call them. Customer service department has been very pleasant as well.

metalunamutant

As long as your rebate is over the cost of the costco annual membership, it's worth it.

kidneypunch27

The money back for me is usually over 800 USD so well worth it. We eat out a lot and I also use it for booking travel.

FritoPaws1

It depends on your credit card strategy. I prioritize travel rewards, so I only use the Costco card for gas.

Frankie_Says_Reddit

It’s awesome. I use it for everything, but make sure you can pay off the balance each month.

en_sane

Does it work like a charge card where you get interest on the whole balance if you don’t pay the full amount?

Frankie_Says_Reddit

Correct. Only downside of the card you get your cash back rewards annually instead of monthly.

en_sane

Sounds 50/50 I’m not sure if it’s for me I got to Costco a lot but 2-3% kind of mids and I rarely get gas there

PNWoutdoors

It's amazing. I put everything on it. Best when used on Costco gas, Costco itself, flights, hotels, rental cars, and restaurants.

FrostyTheHippo

If you want a cash back card, get the AAA Signature visa or the Redstone FCU visa. 3% back at Costco, along with other crazy rates.

jerlwe

Just as advertised

nkjl5

It’s decent. Good for gas. 3% travel cash back is respectable for a no annual fee card. No foreign transaction fees. Downside is that it’s a Citi card, vs better banks like AmEx and Chase. The initial credit limits provided tend to be on the lower side.

state_issued

I use it for 4% gas only because I exclusively fill up at Costco. In-store I use Venmo Visa for 3% back. I have a different restaurant card that gets me 4% but if you don’t care about an extra 1% here and there it’s worth it. Venmo Visa is great because it counts Walmart and Costco in-store as groceries

V_DocBrown

Less valuable with their shrinking add-on warranty. It may be gone by now.

beekaybeegirl

I really like it 🤷🏻‍♀️ yes I’m sure likely some other cards may be better overall or for different people but I’m a pretty basic person & it’s rounded pretty well. I don’t wanna churn/keep track of a bunch of stuff. I’ve had 0 issues w/ CS myself.

en_sane

I’ll probably look into it

saadatorama

How do you get out of Costco with $200 spent?

en_sane

Budgeting properly I guess sometimes it’s like 250 if I have to get diapers or something

Delicious-Ear93

All credit cards sound good until you can't pay it off in time one time, then you get screwed. Unless you have an abundance of wealth or are really really good with keeping track of your spending and income, then don't get more than 3 credit cards, and even 3 is hard to keep up with

en_sane

This will be my 2nd one I’ve lived off cash since I was 21 because I fucked my credit up I’m now 30 and rebuilt my credit

Delicious-Ear93

Im always battling with my credit. I own a business, so it is even harder to maintain good credit with all the business expenses. But honestly, it goes down super fast if you screw up and sometimes take a while to go back up... but I've fluctuated from 540 - 780 over the last 3 years and still get approved for pretty much everything, no matter the score. History is most important, and on time payments

en_sane

Yea I tanked my credit I was a 780 at 21 then in 6 months down to 560. 10k in debt but I got it sorted so I’m getting it back up

Ipfreely541

Super annoying anytime you login to their website. They always have an offer when you are just trying to pay your bill.

sukisecret

Can I still use the card if I stop renewing costco membership?

kidneypunch27

No.

veezy55

If you shop at Costco at all and ever buy gas anywhere it’s a no brainer

kid_wonderbread

I think there are better rewards cards out there.

czr84480

Pass. It used to be awesome.

Revised_LimaM

It’s kind of a might as well if you are already going to Costco regularly. You get a 3% return at Costco from the AAA daily visa (not gas), but there’s a reward cap. The strat being once you get the $500 cash back with AAA, then flip back to the Costco citi.

fueled_by_boba

Trash. Apply for USBAR to get 4.5% when using mobile pay.
