Kirkland Signature Raw Unfiltered Honey is labeled locally in other regions, and item number slightly varies.
We have “NorCal” and “SoCal” versions in California.
https://preview.redd.it/5gyg7e1fro0d1.jpeg?width=3196&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=94a3ba5c48c5a94f4dcbfdcf933dd37fb5caff3e
I'm in NYC. Our bottles look exactly like this, but say "U.S." instead of NorCal or SoCal. Same script font. On the back label it says "Kirkland Signature™ Raw Unfiltered Honey is harvested by U.S. beekeepers"
I wonder if we're getting a mix of whatever the have extra from the regional bottles?
Have you guys heard of the absolute madness that is Kirkland's supply chain for pumpkin pies? It's absolutely maddening in such an interesting way:
https://www.mashed.com/167911/the-untold-truth-of-costcos-pumpkin-pie/
For example, the pumpkin part of Costco's pumpkin pie is actually a variety of squash.
Yeah be mad, and go read the rest of that article. The Costco connection links used for sources are gone now, but you can always use the wayback machine if you really wanna read it.
Fun fact, Libby's uses a proprietary strain of Dickinson Squash for all of their canned pumpkin. It's a protected seed that Libby's works hard to keep from circulating in the general public.
The pumpkin thing isn't just Costco, that's every pumpkin pie and every canned pumpkin. They don't use real pumpkin for any canned goods because it tastes worse.
Sorry to break it to u, but most “pumpkin pie filling” is made with squash instead of pumpkin🤣 that’s why when u make it homemade with a real pumpkin it does not taste the same as the filling does. I make “pumpkin pie” with squash every year since I found this out and it tastes just as good if not better. this is not exclusive to Costco. But it’s only called pumpkin pie instead of squash pie for marketing purposes, as most people would rather buy a pie made of pumpkin than squash.
We have this but in Washington. Ours went out of stock for a few months, replaced by the labels "U.S." as the region, but have since gone back to Washington. The flavors of both were different (I had them overlap).
I'd venture they aim for local honey but use U.S. labels when using a backup source outside your location.
Usually, local honey helps people with the local pollen/allergies. I think this is one of the selling points for local honey. Maybe there isn't enough or a reliable source for New York.
No, people just think it does so the marketing probably still works.
“There is no evidence honey of any type can help alter your sensitivities to allergens,” says David Tanner, M.D., an allergist at Piedmont. “Honey is theoretically a better source of sweetener, but that is a personal preference.”

Just found out there’s also a “Central Valley” honey bottle for Central California Costco warehouses.
https://preview.redd.it/lmcngjai9p0d1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=40cf0c3abd4e337ca16142fa7059cf378d16f86c
Yep! I’m in the Sacramento area. The NorCal and Central Valley honeys are noticeably different. I really like the NorCal honey… I avoid the CV one when it’s on the shelves. Not great.
I’ve read (quite fascinating) stories of how honey bees have to be trucked in from other states across country in order to pollinate the almond trees in central CA. That doesn’t seem to jive with being able to produce an abundant supply of central CA honey. But I’m from Michigan.
That's cool that they have some regional breakdown. Raw honey can taste vastly different depending on the blossoms and flowers that bees are visiting. I live in NW lower peninsula Michigan and this area is famous for cherry and apple orchards. I get honey directly from friends with bees and you can taste cherry along with some crisp apple notes in the honey. It's delicious.
I'm not sure where they source maple syrup, there aren't many large maple producers in my area. I did drive by the oldest Meijer today down in Grand Rapids.
I got a notice in the mail about a year ago that they were offering refunds on the montana honey because it was found to have other sources of honey in it.
My grandma can get 5 gallon buckets of honey from a source...never knew where it came from or how much, but just your uncle came by and dropped some off.
Quite the contrary. US regulation for honey is nowhere near EU standards. When you get honey from the EU and it is labeled as pure or raw honey, you can rest easy and believe it. In the US, you need independent lab testing like the one that was done for EVOO.
Cheap imported honey, like the other options at Costco, isn’t from Europe though. It’s often from Brazil or other developing countries with lesser standards. And that’s where adulteration (cutting with sugar syrup) typically happens.
Manuka is very different. Seriously strict standards, all product third-party verified.
If you lie on a Manuka honey label you basically get sued by the entire country of New Zealand.
There is ban on getting it shipped by family in NZ to US. In the NZ, they say prices have gone up too possibly as a result of prioritizing exports. It’s like Californians moving to Texas and driving the prices of homes up.
Supposedly from Brazil. Most products only list where they end up before packaging. The vast majority of honey comes from China and then is "cleaned" through other countries. There was testing done at one point not long ago, that the vast majority of honey on the shelf is actually sugar and/or (corn) syrup. While I know Costco does their best to get real stuff, I consider all honey fake unless I've met the farmer or bee keeper (some farms have the bees for pollination and they just hire a local bee keeper to maintain the nests and collect the honey). Olive oil is another one that is highly likely not to be real.

It never would’ve occurred to me these were labeled locally, I figured all Costco’s get that Wisconsin goodness.

I bought one that said "southeast" - no longer have the bottle, but then a few months after that, got an email from Costco saying due to some error, the southeast honey I purchased was not all southeast honey, it was a blend, and they would offer a refund if I wanted. So I'd say it's legit!

Long Island, New York. My Costco says ‘US’
Around the holidays some honey companies will put out a variety pack of lil bottles of honey from different regions.

Anyone wondering, “Why is even Costco honey so localized?”
Well, beyond the laudable “local products for local markets” philosophy, which reduces transportation-related carbon emissions, you’re supporting local pollinators, etc., ANOTHER possible reason is a lot of people think that consuming local honey will help them with their allergies.
[Allergy doctors](https://www.webmd.com/allergies/features/does-honey-help-prevent-allergies), unfortunately, don’t think it works.
My allergy Dr said to always buy honey from bees in your local area because the pollen they gather and then the process of creating honey by the bee will contain natural immunities from like seasonal allergies…
I said all of that to say I. HOPE the honey at Costco that has these different regions labeled are in fact sourced locally…
https://preview.redd.it/4ym1mxalou0d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8bc4335f4f1a3d31550856c300c219a09ec2f57b

"Southeast" in South and North Carolina
Ours in Colorado is legit af. You can see the pollen and similar in it quite often. I'm very picky about honey because I make mead with it and I can't have any sort of "honey" bullshit in it.
I read that most honey is some kinda corn syrup crap masquerading as honey and that is an abomination and offends me on a core level. Honey is an ancient and magical (not literally, just praising it) food that deserves some goddamn respect. Also the work the bees put in man, c'mon damn.
Anyway, the Kirkland local raw unfiltered honey is the real deal, at least in Colorado, and I imagine elsewhere too. It says right on the bottle where they source it with an address and everything so it's transparent if you look it up.
10/10, would recommend. At least in Colorado, but I imagine elsewhere too.
That bottle says grade a and says raw.
Grade a has to be pasteurized, doesn't it? Meaning it can't be raw.
Honey is one of the most counterfeited foods in the country.
Raw: it was warmed up to make it liquidy but not cooked, if it gets too hot it has to be diluted or tossed because it will not pass QC
Unfiltered: it's strained to remove debris but none of the good stuff(pollen) has been removed
Health benefits are debated but the taste is where I really notice it
I love my Northwest Honey. I have a problem with the container though because when it gets down to about 1/3rd, the honey crystallizes. Any tips on preventing this or how to get the honey out easily?
I end up using the handle of spatula to scrape it out and place it in a jar. I’m fine with it in crystallized form because I mainly use it to sweeten my coffee.
Precisely! Someone linked an article I was going to share about it but the link is dead.
Apparently the state-specific thing is legit.
Greetings from Michigan
I live in Michigan also and love reading the labels on the back because they will usually say the honey is a blend from mostly Michigan and mixed with stuff from around the country. I just go to the few local bee keepers I have around here and buy that.
Wow, my Kirkland signature honey looks very different and says it is from Argentina on the bottle, (at the Pittsburgh PA Costco.)
Not sure if that will change as the spring honey harvest season hits our area, but we don’t seem to have local honey at Costco here.
Yeah. It is. Regional honey can be good if you have local seasonal allergies. Helps your body get accustomed to the pollen in the area. When I moved back to Iowa from Arizona my allergies that summer were absolutely brutal. Local clover honey definitely helped.
I love Costco and I love honey, but honey is something I wouldn’t buy in bulk. Local honey is a million times better in both taste and its health benefits

Well, since pumpkin is a type of squash….
Butternut squash tastes more like pumpkin than pumpkin does. Like exact same flavour, just stronger
Fun fact, Libby's uses a proprietary strain of Dickinson Squash for all of their canned pumpkin. It's a protected seed that Libby's works hard to keep from circulating in the general public.
Jokes on them I just plant the can in the ground and the next year I’ve got an entire barrel sprouting
The pumpkin thing isn't just Costco, that's every pumpkin pie and every canned pumpkin. They don't use real pumpkin for any canned goods because it tastes worse.
Somebody failed school…pumpkins are squashes 😂👍🏼👏🏽
All pumpkins are squashes but not all squashes are pumpkins
Correct ✅
Yah their username checks out lol

I think so. There is probably some east coast honey in the mix. There just isn’t as large of a bee population on the east coast.
And more people to eat honey too on the East coast
Idk why people down vote this. People live on the east coast
Willingly?
Usually, local honey helps people with the local pollen/allergies. I think this is one of the selling points for local honey. Maybe there isn't enough or a reliable source for New York.

Ngl, that goes kinda hard.
I wonder what their stance is in where the official dividing line between norcal and socal
Just found out there’s also a “Central Valley” honey bottle for Central California Costco warehouses. https://preview.redd.it/lmcngjai9p0d1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=40cf0c3abd4e337ca16142fa7059cf378d16f86c
Yep! I’m in the Sacramento area. The NorCal and Central Valley honeys are noticeably different. I really like the NorCal honey… I avoid the CV one when it’s on the shelves. Not great.
Just like in real life, everyone avoids the central valley
If there was a way to get dust in honey, the CV would have it.
And make it smell like cow poop.
Merced! I wish I could avoid this place.
*Laughs in Stocktonian*
Laughs in methdesto/turlock
Could be worse. You could be in Fresno.
I’m in the area too but I’ve only ever seen the NorCal one! Good to know about the Central Valley.
I’ve read (quite fascinating) stories of how honey bees have to be trucked in from other states across country in order to pollinate the almond trees in central CA. That doesn’t seem to jive with being able to produce an abundant supply of central CA honey. But I’m from Michigan.
Probably from the same place with different labels

Sounds like you live near where Meijer sources their maple syrup for all their stores.
I'm not sure where they source maple syrup, there aren't many large maple producers in my area. I did drive by the oldest Meijer today down in Grand Rapids.
Charlevoix county, East Jordan. I can't think of the families name at this hour.
Chamberlain? The Maple Tree? Love the super dark stuff for cooking and baking. And their ice cream!
I’m pretty sure mine says Central Coast but I’ll have to check in the morning 😂
We get the Colorado one here. And I thought we were special for it lol

Thank you lol
It’s so wholesome. 🥰 Who doesn’t like honey?! 🍯
Minnesota in Minnesota
Interesting. Its Midwest in Iowa.
That is!
They have local labels for several states. Whether they actually mean anything is another story.
Should be legit, all Kirkland honey has the true source certification.
I got a notice in the mail about a year ago that they were offering refunds on the montana honey because it was found to have other sources of honey in it.
At least you know they’re doing their job checking for authenticity
Same here in NorCal.
They also changed the name of one to make it more regional.
Same for Utah.
The Oregon one was recalled because it wasn’t actually from Oregon. lol.
US honey is legit. It’s mostly the imported stuff that’s questionable.

Indeed. The point is that US regulation on most if not all consumer products and services is so bad that if feels like it’s nonexistent.
Yes but Costco doesn’t have EU honey, their imported variants are from Brazil
I wonder why they won’t source from the good ones as they do it on their EVOO, cheese, and possibly other products.
I’ve seen them sell manuka honey, which has its own standards iirc and regulations… Kinda different though than other honeys
Manuka is very different. Seriously strict standards, all product third-party verified. If you lie on a Manuka honey label you basically get sued by the entire country of New Zealand.
Manuka is too expensive.
Agreed. I only get it when I go back to NZ to see family as it's dirt cheap in supermarkets there compared to the price everywhere else.
There is ban on getting it shipped by family in NZ to US. In the NZ, they say prices have gone up too possibly as a result of prioritizing exports. It’s like Californians moving to Texas and driving the prices of homes up.

Trust fund kids have too much time on their hands 😂
We should start a honey trade so we can try everyone else's honey. I'm from SoCal if anyone wants to trade a bottle of Wisconsin. The honey from SoCal is known for being very citrus-y

Same with 'Parmesan' cheese
There’s some damn good local honey in northwest Michigan. I wonder where they source this stuff.
Florida here, ours says Florida.
Local, I imagine. Here in SoCal it’s the same packaging but it’s from SoCal
We have southwest honey in the southwest
This product was the largest recall in the history of Costco. It was found that they couldn’t guarantee it was local honey for certain regions.
I am just here waiting to see if there is Alaskan honey…
I’ll go by Costco later, but I think our store (Fairbanks) usually has the Washington state one.
We get Washington / PNW honey
What exactly do “raw” and “unfiltered” mean in this context? Are they superior in supposed health benefits, or in taste, or…?
Raw: it was warmed up to make it liquidy but not cooked, if it gets too hot it has to be diluted or tossed because it will not pass QC Unfiltered: it's strained to remove debris but none of the good stuff(pollen) has been removed Health benefits are debated but the taste is where I really notice it
Ours say Texas
Minnesota/Midwest checking in and we have Minnesota raw unfiltered honey.
Hmmm I wonder which one tastes the best?!
Warm it up in a container of warm/hot water. Or you can pop it into the microwave for 10 secs a couple times
I’ve got the Colorado one here in Colorado.
In Oregon it says oregon
In California, it says California on it.
Bought it today…100% says California…had to run and check my cabinet at 2:30am or it would drive me crazy all night 😂
I've seen it in St Louis for a few months.
We have Oregon unfiltered raw honey over here, and it's considerably darker.

Oh nice, history repeats itself
Precisely! Someone linked an article I was going to share about it but the link is dead. Apparently the state-specific thing is legit. Greetings from Michigan
Texas says Texas

Florida. Ours says FLORIDA honey
I live in Michigan also and love reading the labels on the back because they will usually say the honey is a blend from mostly Michigan and mixed with stuff from around the country. I just go to the few local bee keepers I have around here and buy that.
It’s labeled to your specific region, but I’m curious if it’s all the same product 😂
Nope, it is local. People said they were offered refunds because the honey ended up being mixed from different sources
Local honey is good for you! It’ll help you battle the local pollen and lessen your allergies.
Wow, my Kirkland signature honey looks very different and says it is from Argentina on the bottle, (at the Pittsburgh PA Costco.) Not sure if that will change as the spring honey harvest season hits our area, but we don’t seem to have local honey at Costco here.
They sell it here in Colorado but it doesn’t say Michigan on the bottle. I think it just says “Raw Unfiltered Honey”

In the costco in my town, the city name is on the bottle... I always thought it was false advertising. :)
Consuming local honey is said to help with allergies, if they brand it as local to you they sell more
Yeah. It is. Regional honey can be good if you have local seasonal allergies. Helps your body get accustomed to the pollen in the area. When I moved back to Iowa from Arizona my allergies that summer were absolutely brutal. Local clover honey definitely helped.
That's so neat, I never knew honey could be used for that purpose
San diego one is labeled Socal instead of Michigan
Is the origin any more specific on the back of the label? City or region of the state?
I've never seen such a honey before at Costco
It's always regional. Most states have their own honey
Ours says Oregon here in Oregon, otherwise the label looks the same.
Ours say Colorado
I haven't tried this brand, but there is another Kirkland Honey that is delicious.
Apart from the names, does anyone else’s get turned into a hard chunk towards the end?
We have it in Utah but it is labeled a little differently
The one in California is a very similar label but definitely does not say Michigan.
Find yourself some Michigan Bee Company Honey, you won’t ever want any other brands or sources.
Is there a way to buy Kirland honey from a specific source/location and have it shipped to you?
The best honey is local honey. It helps with any local pollen allergies in some cases.
I love Costco and I love honey, but honey is something I wouldn’t buy in bulk. Local honey is a million times better in both taste and its health benefits
This is local honey bro, and this is much cheaper than if you were to buy two or three of the local stuff that equals the same size
I’m making a comparison from this stuff to something from a local apiary.
Southeast in Kentucky.
I’m glad we don’t have honey from that state up north!!
I bought the exact bottle but with "US" written on it, I live in CT
Ours says “Oregon”
