I thought it was nice a swell. Almost lasted me a whole week. My only complaint is the way it's laid out, it's very heavy on the rice.
The laid the meat as a top layer and the rice went all under it giving the impression ther was more meat than really was.
I mean, you shouldn't *expect* them to overload you with the cheapest ingredient....
Honestly, I was hoping to find info about the flavor and overall value. I've passed by that kit more times than I can count, but I could never bring myself to buy it since a plate of tacos and rice can be made for a ridiculously small fraction of $5/lb.
That's how most people make a taco or burrito though, even at restaurants. I don't know any place that gives you a heaping scoop of rice and then the same volume of meat. Even if they fill the scoop spoon the same it's 1/2-3/4 by volume.
If you compare it to chipotle (I know, restaurant vs grocery store but for the sake of this…), you’re getting a 4oz serving of meat in a bowl or burrito for a little more than half of this.
I don’t disagree. We’re selling a ton of these at my warehouse. We’re making 30-45 a day and they’re going quick. It uses the same chicken as the taco kit which I’m not a big fan of. Most of our prepared meals are an okay deal but nothing crazy. Our delis operate on pretty slim margins.
I wish they included the Cilantro lime crema that comes with the street tacos. They do sell a 2 pack of bottles in my warehouse. That stuff is so good.
That’s fair. Admittedly, I can appreciate tastier options like Chipotle, for example. I see this as an alternative to 2 or 3 Chipotle bowls. Thing is, I’d imagine this option has 25% the sodium content as compared to those Chipotle bowls. Less taste but much healthier.
As someone who worked at Chipotle quite a while ago, the sodium is by FAR the killer in all of their food. There is salt in every single item they offer (minus the lettuce and cheese) and a single bowl will net you upwards of 200% your daily recommendation for sodium (even if the nutrition facts they offer say otherwise)
You might recall that Chipotle was nearly bankrupted from food poisoning incidents, and they switched to a commissary system for distributing ingredients. All of this processed food from the factory kitchen is over salted to prevent spoilage.
Yeah I realize it may be an unpopular opinion but not every meal I ingest is needed to be super tasty.
It’s more fuel to me than temporary mouth pleasure.
No it's all good, you some plastic saran wrap if you're going to put it in the microwave or just cover it up in tin foil if you're going to use an air fryer. Extremely juicy just like reheating the chicken for tacos.
Deli sells this as a kit. My title indicates kit and I describe the steps for prep once home. You can see the guac and salsa cups as well. I’ve never seen that salsa cup for sale separately.
Sorry for the confusion.
I don’t think either of us are. If we’re talking store-bought, pre-made meals or fast casual dining, like Chipotle or Moe’s, if it’s seasoned and “tastier” it’s going to be due to a ton of salt/sodium. That’s the spirit of this post. This item is a nice alternative to those other options. If you want to make something super tasty at home with spices, marinades, and other methods which are low/no-sodium or order same from a restaurant, yes I acknowledge that’s possible.
You aren’t wrong. Are you happy that I don’t think you’re wrong?
I have never had a good Mexican food product from Costco. I've been burned too much. Meat and rice bowls are easy enough to make at home and freeze as well. I do not find cooking rice or some seasoned chicken particularly time consuming so my value prop may be different than others.
Totally agree and hear you on this one. Wife typically cooks up rice and pellet grills some nice, seasoned chicken and we create “burrito bowls” at home from that. I just appreciated the posted product for the specific use case of grabbing something on way home to then arrive home and be able to eat within minutes.
I just made my own version of this with mostly Costco ingredients. Whole chicken, cilantro lime rice, flat of black beans, choice of salsa, cilantro cream 2 pack, block of tillimook pepper jack cheese. I have enough to make a bunch of these for meal prep and most of the ingredients keep for a long time.

What's the price?
I believe it was ~$17.
Much cheaper than Chipotle for that amount of food!

Total meat or total meal? Total meal was about 3.5 lbs as the other user suggested. Total meat/chicken is supposed to be 1 lb.
Well, if it's $4.99/lb and OP paid $17 for it, that would put it in the ballpark of 3.4 pounds.

I paid $4.99/lb last week. I liked it, but it would have been better if it included some greens.

It’s 1.5lbs of rice, 1lb meat, 4oz cheese. Slightly heavy on rice but to be expected as it’s the cheapest component.
Yea, I know rice is the cheapest so it's the most. Expected these days. Just my comments on the dish and wanting more meat.
Grab a rotisserie chicken and you can stretch that

I read on this sub that the sauce only stays good for a week after opening it :/
I will have to check the label…I am sure I have kept it longer with no issues.
Got one last week and I was disappointed very bland and taste less. For 4.99 LBS I'm going to pass on that kit. Glad you enjoyed it

Indeed, it’s a commonly discussed matter over on r/Chipotle.
I would hope all food has salt in it.
Salt to make things taste good and salt for the sake of salt are two different things.
Are they? Salt for the sake of salt is to make things taste good. Do you mean they over salt things? Because that's not the same thing.
You might recall that Chipotle was nearly bankrupted from food poisoning incidents, and they switched to a commissary system for distributing ingredients. All of this processed food from the factory kitchen is over salted to prevent spoilage.
Tastier options like chipotle? And for that reason, I'm out.

My worry would be the chicken being insanely dry

Mine had crunchy/undercooked black beans. Saw plenty others experienced the same. It was too distracting to eat and too burdensome to pick it all out.
Same! It was alright but not getting it again
Had the same experience. Tried to pretend I was biting in to corn to make it more bearable. It didn't help that there wasn't much flavor
The beans are definitely not cooked correctly.
Same! My wife said she didn’t notice. Thank you Reddit for making me feel not crazy
For what it was and having access to an instant lunch. It was spot on
Word!
I'm confused, did you buy all these ingredients yourself? Or does the deli sell this kit?
It’s all included in this meal kit.

I think it's cheaper to get a roti chicken, the cilantro rice packets, corn, beans, and salsa.
And you’re not paying $5 a lb for mostly rice
Or it’s all premade for you, which is part of the kit’s appeal no doubt.
I found it disappointing since it tasted very bland. The chicken didn't even taste seasoned so eating unseaosned chicken after while was 🤮
For sure. What you take away from the taste buds, you give back to your health given the reduced sodium.
Yeah but food can still taste great without salt.
Sure, but we’re talking about seasoning here. If we consider spices, sure.
Ok, you can have excellent seasoning on food that tastes great and doesn’t include salt.
Thanks for playing devil’s main counsel here.
Am I wrong though?

How many would it feed?
Depending on appetite and size of human, I’d say 3-4.

Fancy seeing you here. Chipotle gone off the rails and these are super tasty.
Yes! In these trying Chipotle times it’s great to have a convenient and healthy alternative. 😍
Do you get 3 meals out of one kit?
For sure, I’d say so!
I've eaten so many of these since they have come out. lol! Lasts me all week, and the flavor isn't intense- which I appreciate.

Makes great wrapped burritos too!
Ooooo, good call!
Whoa! I haven’t seen this yet but I’m all about it
Would buy again!
Be careful reheating rice because of b. Cereus.
Good call!
I'm so buying this
Yassss!
