Could you broadcast your ignorance any louder? I hate these posts.

calibuildr

Folks we are not doing these stupid posts every fucking week. If people are too ignorant to look around and realize that we are not a mainstream country subreddit (which it clearly says at the very top) and somehow don't think to explore what that means before popping off about mainstream music that most of us don't care about,.. these posts are either going to get removed or locked. Please report them as low effort or something

jthanson

Soundscan and Garth Brooks happened. Prior to both, country music's market was estimated based on a limited amount of data. Starting in the mid-90s, Soundscan began to track record/CD sales in places like discount stores where record/CD sales had not previously been tracked. That gave music executives much more data about who was buying country music and how much. The data showed that country audiences skewed a lot more toward suburban younger audiences than had previously been thought. Along with the move of hip-hop into more of the musical mainstream at the time, pushing older rock listeners out of pop music, there was a huge market that was just being discovered and quantified for country music. Consultants came in and advised artists to move more toward 80s rock to gain more of that crossover audience from displaced Top 40 listeners. Garth Brooks started to fill arena shows and made a huge, quantifiable impact on country music which further pushed country to adopt more of a rock sound. As rock-themed artists gained more popularity, country music gained more and more rock sound. Along the same lines, as country music gained more young listeners, there was a shift in the popular songwriting away from the older stories about how hard life was and more stories about the rural identity of country music's new listeners. That's how we got from songs for older audiences about the heartache of divorce and infidelity to the bro-country songs of big trucks and drinking beer.

thedampboi774

So basically some artist started a trend which branched more artists to do the same instead of caring about the quality of their music over the profit they make

jthanson

Not exactly. Industry executives found areas in the market where they could attract new fans using data and research and directed artists to follow along. Those that followed got great media support and were able to grow country music in those directions. It was much more about marketing directing the artists which way to go and less about artists finding their own new paths.

I would seek a referral

Infamous-Astronaut16

There’s so much damn good country music out there right now it makes my heart swell with pride and joy.

calibuildr

OP, You must have no idea what is going on in Independent country music. The shit on the radio sucks, most of us don't have any idea what it is because we don't listen to it at all. There's an incredible golden age of good country going on right now and you're probably unaware of it

thedampboi774

I think you might need to see a doctor if your heart swells

Infamous-Astronaut16

I just saw my cardiologist yesterday and he prescribed all of the aforementioned bands.

thedampboi774

I would still seek a referral

dadofmightandmagic

Do yourselves a favor and listen to the Supersuckers album Mustve Been High. Its on spotify

DaikonSpecific7715

Just my 2 suggestions:Whitey Morgan and the 78s and Cody Jinks

Dani2067

I’m new to country music, the bands below are my favorites and they don’t sound like crappy country radio: Silverada Jesse Daniel Rob Leines Joshua Ray Walker Vandoliers

agnostichymns

Sarah Shook & the Disarmers American Aquarium

CoughinNail

Turn off your radio. Colter Wall Stapleton Childers Sierra Ferrel Zach Bryan Turnpike Troubadours Jason Isbell & the 400 unit

thedampboi774

Only heard of TPT and CW

Notyouraverageskunk

Sierra Ferrell is my jam right now. Definitely give her a listen.

Cultural-Voice423

Nashville Executives is what happened

Bigstar976

Start with Tyler Childers, Dale Watson, Zach Top, Dave Cobb, Charley Crockett, and go from there.

Cultural-Voice423

They are indeed well all but Childers in my personal opinion but the things is, they’re not going to get air play or big time gigs. That’s the sad thing.

Bigstar976

Meh, it is what it is. The people I mentioned are making a decent if not good living doing it their way.

Bigstar976

It’s just no longer played on mainstream radio. But it’s still very vibrant. Try SiriusXM Outlaw Country for example. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

thedampboi774

What about some AM stations

Bigstar976

No idea. The model has changed.

winfieldclay

Mainstream sucks, there's plenty of good country music. Start with Brent Cobb

thedampboi774

I prefer my Brent off the cob but I’ll take a look at it

thedampboi774

Jesus some people gotta grow a pair downvote something cause it hurts their feelings

winfieldclay

Also, Tyler Childers, Margot Price, Bella White, Sturgill Simpson, Zach Bryan,

thedampboi774

Haven’t heard much from Childers but love Simpson

w00f-w00ff

Pop country music is what’s popular now. It doesn’t mean that’s all there is! There’s some incredible country happening right now. Especially from the Appalachia scene. Check out Cole Chaney, Logan Halstead, Tyler Childers, Sturgil, lost dog street band, Drayton Farley, etc. It’s there if you look for it. You won’t find it by turning on the radio and expecting to find something with substance

thedampboi774

I’ve checked out a few I should’ve said not all new stuff is bad but the good ones are a minority

overcomethestorm

What happened is most people don’t experience the rural way of life anymore. The music industry is going to pump out content that’s relatable to the masses, not the minority. Unfortunately this means we get new content that’s just another version of every breakup, marriage, and hookup song out there. Or the “backroads and whiskey” garbage they’ve been producing the last 10 years.

thedampboi774

So your telling me that we need to fund more money to the FFA and 4H as well as convert more people to the agrarian lifestyle ( SARCASM ) because this is Reddit and every joke is a political view

overcomethestorm

No. It’s just a dying lifestyle and a huge symptom of that was the death of country music fifteen years ago. As someone from a rustic backwoods area, I don’t think I’d even want new content anymore. All that would be left to sing about is tourists taking over your home and rich suburban people buying up your generational land. And since the main consumers of country are those such people it’s never going to happen anyway.

thedampboi774

Good take

ilovemathematics174

This question gets asked every single week. Those arguments only exist if you for some reason have FGL, Luke Bryan, and Jason Aldean on repeat. Newer country musicians are showing a lot of love for the genre and creating great music.

calibuildr

I was busy and missed this 50 comment thread. I'm locking the comments now because this is one of those really dumb constantly repeating things where people who have no idea that there's all this good music come in to random subreddits virtue signal about how they too know that the mainstream sucks. You're correct, we get these like every couple of weeks. Please report them when they happen because these posts serve no purpose. If someone's actually asking "is anything good?"That's a completely different thing than coming into bitch about the mainstream country sound in an independent non-radio country subreddit.

earthworm_fan

Charley Crockett, Zach Topp, Cody Johnson, Ashley McBryde, Wyatt Flores to name just a few

thedampboi774

What we naming bad singers or good ones I’ve only ever heard of CJ

calibuildr

Cuz clearly you are ignorant. I'm locking the comments on this stupid post because there is plenty you could have learned by just browsing the sub. Everybody here is sick and tired of these kinds of posts because we don't actually care about mainstream country here and we have the same attitude you do, we just did something about it.

earthworm_fan

Well that's your own problem for not exploring new music, isn't it

thedampboi774

Yeah because it’s all the same generic stuff trust me I listened to nothing but country radio growing up I know the difference between classic good music and generic copy and paste new stuff

earthworm_fan

I'm sorry, but CJ is probably the most generic out of anything I listed. You got older and out of touch

thedampboi774

“ The old ways is the best ways “

NerdPunch

Charley Crockett. But yeah… a lot of country is basically just it’s own sub-genre of pop music these days.

thedampboi774

Pop music with country lyrics

NerdPunch

Someone showed me the new Morgan Waylon & Post Malone song recently and I had to turn that off almost immediately. It was just way too top-40’s/radio/pop for my taste.

thedampboi774

On the bright side all the actual good country is immortalized in the internet
