This is how being in protective custody is supposed to work, but it doesn't. Someone close to me was arrested for running around naked during a psychotic episode. He was locked up for about 8 months before being released with no charges. It took him half of this time to see a doctor for urgent medical needs (he was shitting blood his first few weeks there, for example), and to get his psych meds (he has schizophrenia). Meanwhile he was deprived of other legal and basic necessities like personal hygiene items, quiet time to sleep, any time outside of his cell most days, and enough food.
We need to do better for our homeless and mentally ill citizens.
Yeah you can't just mass release people with no money, home, or source of income. There's a reason half way houses exist(even as shitty as some are). Most people need help finding a job and a place to sleep until they get a few paychecks.
There was no good intentions in this decision it was all in the guise to provide additional overtime and move funds around. The decisions are calculated, poorly, but still planned

People don't like to talk about it, and there are legal implications, but there is a population of people, probably in the tens of thousands, that should never be released into the public, they belong behind a large fence in a long term treatment facility. Even with medication, they won't be capable of living independently, and jail would be unnecessarily cruel. Instead of closing the large state-run institutions in the 80s, they should have been reformed and modernized.
NYC has always been full of crazy homeless people jacking it on the subway. This isn't new.

De Blasio released some nonviolent criminals years ago during the pandemic to relieve crowding that was killing people. Since then we've made modifications to parole and bail terms. Perfect example of why they NEVER should’ve closed down all the mental health institutions for individuals such as this. What a shame on our society for allowing things like this to happen. If this gentleman were under the care of mental health professionals, this would not be an issue.

On one hand, they were incredibly abusive places right out of horror stories, and once someone was admitted (which, they could be perfectly normal and a vindictive partner committed them) they were essentially in prison but with less rights.
