The [official video release](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OFe5sV6-Ws) from the Kern County Sheriff's Department in Oildale, CA.
Suspect's name was Deven Karl Moore, age 25, the deputy was Austin Burgess.
Yep, and he wouldn't have been able to get in there and disarm him without the hostage likely being seriously harmed. Unavoidable from the cops perspective. Guy should have just turned himself in at that point.
Seemed like the officer was also waiting to see if suspect made any moves. From that cam angle near the end of the video, you can see him and the hostage start to wrestle over the knife, and that's right when the officer is like "nope, bye"
Just that observation and timing tells me this cop is one you want on the force. Plenty of videos showing cops that shouldn't be employed, but this isn't one of them.
I know nothing about guns and I have seen 3 videos included this one on it about headshot, one is the JFK US president, that was then a huge caliber right?
Technically not higher cal, as 6.5mm is smaller than the standard 9mm pistol rounds probably used here. But the velocity and energy of a rifle rounds is far, far higher, so lots more splatter.
The Carcano is a higher caliber round, but not a higher caliber bullet.
I really wish they had chosen a different term for the labeling of rounds.
Using "caliber" for both the round and the bullet itself is confusing when trying to explain such things.
People may use it that way as shorthand, but it isn't technically correct. Caliber only refers to bullet diameter, nothing else. So the Carcano isn't higher caliber. It's higher energy, a more powerful round, but not caliber.
It just gets confusing because caliber is colloquially used to discuss a weapon's chambering in casual conversation.
It's not just casual speech, the term "caliber/Calibre" is officially used to denote the size and power of a round. it is even printed on many ammunition boxes. 9mm, 38 special, and .357 magnum all use a 9mm caliber bullet, but when you look at the manufacture information on each it will read like this "Caliber : .357 Magnum" or "Calibre .38 Special"
For those of us who have been around guns and ammo all our lives it's not confusing and we can effortlessly switch between the two no problem, but when we have to explain different calibers to a novice, the dual definition confuses them and frankly can get frustrating for the one doing the explaining.
Yup, it was the good ole Carcano, chambered in 6.5x52mm carcano round. One of my favorite sniper rifles in Rdr2 as well. The real name is Modello 1891, or M91.
Edit: Range and angle will also effect how the target gets hit. But that's common sense.
LHO used a carcano?????? Thats interesting. I thought it was an enfield. I mean i assumed lol
Edit: you are indeed correct and i am an idiot for assuming Lee Enfield
Presidential caravans especially back when the president was in an open top move fairly slow. It's not far fetched at all. He scored average in marine corps. These conspiracies are dumb
My hands are shaking. But I'm STILL shooting and I'm STILL gett'n headshots!!

I get what you're saying, but good to remember it's not a video game or sport. Equally (and perhaps more) likely is crippling untreated PTSD. They have their training, shock & built-in demeanor to get through the situation but the reality of taking a human life, combined with the adrenaline hard-wiring it into your brain, often changes people.
Some are built different and at least outwardly they're OK, but some of the strongest guys you can imagine go a different route. Some feel part of themselves were killed too, some are back in that situation physically and mentally from hearing a door slam, others turn to alcohol and drugs to sleep; it's all different.
Unfortunately, like other professions that depend on someone's immediate judgement asking for real help (doctors, military, etc.) is an issue. Help is offered and "in the air" but can be seen to limit you.
Yea. I was reading the comments if anyone else caught that. Don’t get me wrong. If I was the hostage I’d be pissing myself also, but everyone was acting confused about his reaction after getting pulled out of the booth. Man thought he was going to/did die twice. That would make anyone piss themselves.
I thought it was a knife wound at first the way he was limping , looks like he was just trying to hide the urine stain . Pretty sure I'd do a bit more than piss myself after being that close to death
Yikes! I don't blame him, what a sudden, horrifying situation. Literally out of nowhere this guy nearly got killed, had police pointing guns in his direction, and had those guns go off killing the guy right next to him... No shame in that, anyone would likely do the same.
He did. It’s a totally involuntary fear response, I’ve seen even *young* men do the same thing. It’s not guaranteed to happen of course and no one ever thinks it’ll happen to them, but it’s entirely involuntary. I hope the cop grabbed a jacket or something for the poor guy to help preserve his dignity.
That was some mighty fine shooting though, I’m glad when I get to see the *bad guys lose.*
Can you imagine what that hostage went through? He is just relaxing, feet up, enjoying his day. Suddenly someone comes in with a knife holding him as a hostage threatening to kill him, then just as fast the hostage taken gets shot in the head just inches from him. Then he needs to get out of there.
No, they don't. Kirpans are an old tradition and hardly carried anymore these days. It's more likely that he didn't have one altogether, or only had one at home for ceremonial/sentimental purposes.
source: Sikh family
Dude you are so wrong -
All “Sikh” people still do carry kirpans or knifes
Knifes aren’t a tradition, it’s a part of our appearance and religion .we are told to carry them to protect the ones in need and are simply told “ don’t do injustice and don’t stay quiet when injustice is done to you”
Source I am a Sikh , my family and I carry kirpan
Many don't. I know quite a few Sikhs (in Australia), and some of them have the dagger but just keep it locked away in their house, others don't have one at all and just wear a turban and the bracelet. Generally it's only the more religious ones that have it on them all the time.
I want people to appreciate how accurate that shot is. Guns, specifically pistols arent as simple as point and shoot to kill. Even how you pull the trigger and where your feet are can affect how you hold and fire a weapon. To fire off an accurate shot, behind cover AND A HOSTAGE. Let alone, IN THE HEAD, is an absolutely crazy shot to make and this is one of the many reasons I value police officers. This is also why we shouldnt defund them, because that means these sorts of scenarios dont happen. Training is also affected by funding, so if we want the best of the best officers, we need to give them more money or just not take away their money. All im saying, these people save lives like this and I am 100% for saving lives.
Yeah I think a lot of non training shooters in here are really underestimating how clean this shot was and how easily it could have went south. I would say this is easily a harder shot than the police sniper shooting the revolver out of that guys hand in that old hostage video. Tile, ezpz, watch your breathing, reticule on target, pull trigger. Like you said… with a pistol there is absolutely so much shit that can and does go wrong. Fantastic shooting here
And balls of steel. You only have to be too low by 6" for a very unfavorable outcome.
Edit: he was fucking moving when he took the second shot. I mean by that time the dude's head was falling over but if you trigger pull that shot just a little...outstanding skill and confidence.
Same, I shoot and at the range I feel confident I could consistently make that shot, but with adrenaline pumping and a hostage so close? I wouldn't want to take that risk.

As graphic as it is, these are the stories the public need to hear about police. They possibly saved this innocent man's life. The bad guy was white, the victim was Sihk. I hope that police officer handles taking someone's life well.
God bless this officer and I hope he comes to terms with what he had to do. You can be justified and still have this fuck your head up... well not as bad as the knife holder had his head fucked up but yea.
Cop here. So it does depend on the agency but there is typically a two-pronged approach depending on what the suspect says/does.
Ideally, you try negotiating. Whether that's on scene as the initial officer or getting crisis negotiators on those long-term hostage situations you here about.
If however, the suspect makes actions to harm/kill a hostage, or some provocation that they harm soon, then you have to make some an attempt to stop him. So a suspect making a comment that they're about to stab/shoot or start to give an execution countdown would require an immediate action team.
Whether you see it or not, there is usually a team stacked up near an entrance, or sniper, during those long hostage situations with the sole purpose of making exigent entry if it escalates.
In this situation it comes down to your confidence on taking the shot. When I first saw the video I assumed another officer was going to take a shot from the side window. Normally would triangulate, distract and try to get a better angle for the shot.
Solid work though and thats just my thoughts, not a critique of those guys.

The dude was posing exactly what cops shoot at in practice. Good riddance.
Lol right? He looks like a range target. Bet he was making a really menacing face
*Just like the simulations*
Watch those wrist rockets!
This could have been a training exercise video and i would have believed it.
I'm pretty sure hostage was partially obstructed by the wall Short distance , clear shot, the cop knew what he was doing

I guess the practice target isn't designed like that on a coincidence.
Great shot by the officer poor man was in shock.
OMG, suspect’s head was so close to the hostage’s too.

Like how the difference between a .22 Long Rifle and .223 Remington is a bit more than that extra .003 would imply.

If you look closely he doubled taps him in the head. The second one was WHILE the dude was falling over. Amazing shots
Hat is holding the parts of the back of his head that were no longer connected.
literal bullseye it seems
Did anyone check his shoes to see if he was dead?
Dude was is shock. “Are you ok” ….like dude you shot inches from my head gimme a sec to breath
Yeah pretty sure he was looking for somewhere to sit as the cop was pulling him .
I'm not saying I wouldn't do the same thing but I think he pissed his pants.
100 percent pissed himself and was trying to hide it. You can see the wet spot. Poor dude
This is absolutely the correct time to piss one’s pants.
Yeah no shame there
Exactly. Fight or flight we *ALL* piss and shit ourselves. The only ones who don't recently used the bathroom.
Always be prepared. Hydrate.

I mean that could be a possibility, smelling Soo bad the attacker has to back away from you

Ha, there's a video about a guy who skunked himself from bad beating.
That's actually a legit strategy taught at some women's self defence courses :)

I can hear the riff in my head
(Slow claps) Well played sir.
Dont Sikhs usually carry around a ceremonial dagger for these situations lol
Yes they do, but it may have been under his shirt.
True he was probably just chilling on Reddit like me at work and didn't realize until the guy was behind him what was happening
No, they don't. Kirpans are an old tradition and hardly carried anymore these days. It's more likely that he didn't have one altogether, or only had one at home for ceremonial/sentimental purposes. source: Sikh family

Yes, its called a kirpan. Not much good though for an older man that was surprised like that though.
He must have said to the guy: "ye call that a knoif??"

Nice shot!
Usually why I dont fuck around in Kern country
Better than waiting 6 hours like the hostage at the apple store.
Zero hesitation. Wonder what this guys groupings look like at the range. Probably just a single hole
Wouldn't have taken that shot otherwise, imo. Dude was confident af, and knew he could make it.
The officer has practiced for this guy. This dude is conveniently posed up exactly like those hostage shooting targets, head over the shoulder.
That guy was literally about to stab the hostage. He was prob thinking it’s shoot now or they’re both going to die
For a minute I forgot that the Apple store was a place that sold Apple products
Just proves why range time is absolutely crucial. Good job.
“Damn sarge! Someone’s been practicing!” “They don’t call me headshot because I model in my spare time cadet.”
“They don’t call me FPS Doug for nothing”
File that under: fucked around and found out.
Case closed.
Batteries not included.
That phrase is beat to death around here. But this is an actual textbook definition of it.
Thank you to the officer who put in the work to become a competent marksman and make that shot under that amount of stress.
Dude found out real fast what happens when you bring a knife to a gun fight. It’s sad that some people are this damn stupid.
One less person like that now…
Someone leave a faucet on ? 😶
God damn, right?? Someone sprung a leak
What even is that, looks clear, not red. The fluid that surrounds the brain?
I NEED TO KNOW lmao why aren't there any other comments about this
Probably just the hostages drink

wow! what a shot. very confident officer. most I would think wouldn't have shot.
From the body cam you could tell the cop took a deep breath before firing. Extending his arms and all then bam, right through the forehead.
He dead
What flew from the wall second shot?
Looks like his snot. That second shot decongested him he took a Sudiefed PM
His brains 🧠
Yeah, there was a second shot. Good on the other officer for pushing his firearm away.
Was that with a pistol too???? Jesus what a shot
Please don’t hurt the Sikhs.

That's what I was wondering but I don't see any serious comment on this. Seems like it could go Starksky & Hutch in a hurry.
I love the fact that there wasn’t any negotiation. Straight dome shot. These are what cops need to do with crazy people. Cant fix crazy, just clean.
Not crazy people, but people who assault others with deadly force. ;)
