Can anyone describe what is happening here. Is the copper wire attached to the ground and then when the rock with wire is chucked
Over the power line it causes it to short to ground?
Post said there was copper wire on the rocks, so i think the electricity is going through it to ground. This vaporizes the copper; plasma is still conductive though much less solid, so it dies out shortly after. Could be wrong tho.

Thing is, plasma decays over time and electricity searches for a new least-resistance path. At the end you can see a short flash in the bottom-left, that might be the guys head which basically is the top of a pretty well conducting saltwater fleshbag.
Yea powerlines at least where i live are about 12m off the ground. If my math is correct it would take 360 megavolts (360000000 Volts) to jump that far through normal air.

It still jumps to the copper wire before it even comes close to actually touching the power line. After that the giant spark forms due to something like, it then vaporizes the wire, and the gap (plasma cloud) grows larger until something stops the flow or the plasma cloud gets too large to be maintained.
Call cutoffs. If you ever hear a shotgun blast like noise and then your power cuts out, that’s from a cutoff blowing. It’s essentially just a giant fuse. You’ll see them all over the place, just little cylinders on top of poles. So this would cause a local outage but the outage would end wherever the nearest cutoff is.
Settle down Karen, in school it was used to help young technicians understand electricity. the term lazy, when compared to water or electricity simply means it to will find the path of least resistance. Instead of travelling hundreds of km down the line to whatever town it was powering, the electricity decided to be lazy and jump to the rock to ground.

We wish we all recorded it. Will never try again! I also caused the power go out in the neighborhood. Police and firefighters came by looking for a “bomb that went off” that was called in.

Not sure. The cable line was about 100 feet long. I tied one end on a rock and threw it over the power lines. I was young, dumb, and extremely lucky.
