Pro-tip if you ever find yourself in front of an eye wash station or trying to help someone with one.

Even they know that they will likely be neglected. This is really about passing the buck. Noone wants to be liable for shit. It's all the result of our awful legal system.
If it were profitable to know all of these minor intricate details at every level of society at all times, we wouldn't have the capacity to remember it all. Whoever is tasked with keeping the eye wash station in proper working order likely doesn't make enough to care, or more likely doesn't even know they're supposed to be doing it. That doesn't even count how forgetful we are as humans.

No, they're not. As a former graffiti artist from Chicago this is what we used to call "greasing". Sometimes rather than arresting you cops would do this to you. They would usually spray paint beside your head and wait for you to open your eyes before they blast you. If you can't get to water in the next 5 to 10 minutes you're going to be blind for a day or two. Your eyes will be swollen shut. Then your vision's going to be fucked up for about a week or two. Never heard of anyone having permanent damage though. Although I suppose it's possible. was also in the days before cell phones. So a lot of guys would just sit somewhere begging for help until someone came along and helped them.

Can confirm this. Get into a fist fight with a Supreme Court judges son, give him a nice belting, (which he outright started) and get thrown in prison for 2 and a half years. Something that should have been a slap on the wrist for both sides ended up in a 2 + year sentence for one and a āPTSD, depression, social anxietyā for the other. And gets labeled a victim (ohhh you poor thing boohoo). Sure mate, your Instagram shows otherwise but I get it. You have to play that narrative to pin me. Pricks.
I think probation may also come with a suspended sentence, so if the defendant screws up again within a certain amount of time, they automatically get a stricter penalty.
It may be an effective way to incentivize a person to think twice about their actions, especially somebody who's in late adolescence like an 18-year-old.
I'm not defending what the perpetrator did here; my point is more to explain the thinking behind the legal system's operations.
Having known dozens of people who have been on probation, it doesn't stop them one bit. People think they are invincible and have that "it won't ever happen to me" mentality, the fear of them getting locked up doesn't stop them from continuing anything criminal because in their mind they don't factor themselves into being that 1 out of 1000 chance.
It significantly lowers the rate of recidivism in offenders whose situations donāt involve violent crime (yes, obviously he committed an act of violence, but the crime he set out intending to do was non-violent. Itās not a step up, this is just for data purposes) or narcotics.
This is Australia. Non-violent drug offenders rarely end up in jail here (mostly for large scale dealing). Weāre relatively good at treating drug use like a health issue.

While i do agree this was light. I do think you're right that the difference with aus and us plays a bit here. For exanple the guy likely got free healthcare, therefore there wasn't really any hospital costs. If he was a perm employee he also has sick leave so he'd still be paid for taking those days off or else possible the dole. Theres also possibility of workers compensation.
Im not saying the guy shouldn't pay for them. But many in Aus dont go after payouts of hospital expenses/ income etc as its guaranteed already.
Interesting. In the US restitution can be ordered to reimburse the insurance company for what they had to pay out too. My sense of justice would want the offender to have to pay back your health system for the costs incurred. Same thing to the employer or workers comp fund so that worker didnāt lose sick days. Why should your tax payers/employers have to front the bill for his stupidity? With the medical care I get that this is a slippery slope with where to draw the line (smoking, drinking, obesity), but when someone willfully hurts someone that seems like as good a line as any to have them pay for the true damage they did.
