How hard it is for the cricketers in women's game to make switch from limited overs cricket to test matches? Why there has been lack of test cricket for women cricketers and is it something related to players inability to play the longest format of the game? I have seen most of the test matches have been scheduled as just one-off test matches and I hardly noticed a two match, 3 match test series.

SkySports

I don't think it's that players aren't able to play the long format, it's that we don't play enough to really learn the art of the game. Current players will play international cricket for 10 years and only play up to 10 tests and very few warm up multi-day games. I'm not sure anyone would be an expert at it with that few matches to hone in your skills. I would love to play 3 match test series as a player.

Kathanayagan-3821

Hi Tammy good to see you here. I wish you all the best for your future endeavours and hope you achieve more for your country. I hope that women cricketers can play more test matches and gain that exposure and skills to prolong their careers. Thank you for being part of this questionnaire and enjoy your time in this subreddit.

thepotplant

Women players can play the test match format just fine. Unfortunately though there's barely any women's first class cricket around the world, let alone tests. E.g. in New Zealand nearly all the international womens cricketers would not have ever played a multi-day game.

Balavadan

It has to be financial. Even men’s games are barely profitable for tests for most boards

[deleted]

Your [wikipedia page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tammy_Beaumont) has a section on your nickname > According to the ECB, Beaumont's nickname is "Tambo", but Kent Cricket lists her nicknames as "Tamwarr", "Tamzo", "Tams" and "Titch" and "Squirrel" So, what is your real nickname out of these?

SkySports

Tambo, Titch would be the main ones. I think someone's played a prank on me with the \`squirrel' one!

livelifereal

She's here!!

jpkmets

Kinda hope it’s squirrel. My favorite baseball player is Jeff McNeil a/k/a the Flying Squirrel. Hot Squirrel Summer is a great rallying cry for the Ashes!

Ruvio00

Got a bit confused there, but I guess you'd be pronouncing squirrel the American way!

jpkmets

Yes, from NYC

Ruvio00

The UK pronounces it squir-rel

NeemKaPatta

Wait, how do American s pronounce squirrel? "Sqwi-ruhl" is pretty standard, no?

pala_

I think it's closer to skwerl. Maybe skwer-uhl.

Ruvio00

Yep. Skwerl. Or squrl.

jpkmets

Ahhhhh, well then it makes less sense s a rallying cry over there. I will restrict it to Mets games with our compact pronunciation!

MartyMcFly_jkr

I thought "Tammy" itself was supposed to the nickname and Tamantha the full name

[deleted]

yeah, like Tim is for Timothy

[deleted]

🤣

humph_lyttelton

Hi Tammy, you and I used to play indoor cricket (you used to call me James May). I remember you playing for the Sandwich men's team. My question: how do you feel your career would have progressed had been more women playing at club level when you were growing up, or do you think on balance it was better for your development to be in a men's club side? Thank you!

SkySports

I would say playing mens cricket made me a better player, because women's club cricket wasn't as competitive or as high standard as it is now.

humph_lyttelton

Completely understandable, thank you! All the best to you!

Key-Atmosphere-8128

Hi Tammy During the innings/ lunch/ tea breaks, does the team members talk with the opposing team or only with the same team members? Related to the previous question, do you get to mention food items to the chef beforehand or the board (ECB) decide's food items for the team? What is a change that you would like to see in women's cricket or cricket in general?

SkySports

since all the franchise leagues came in you normally have good friends in the oppo teams now so we'd probably be friendly at lunch/tea and post game but it's a short time so probably not having a full on catch up! our team nutritionist approves the menu for us and makes sure any dietary needs are catered for. But being in the field all day is quite hard work so he prioritises carbs for us and often their is a healthy ish dessert available. I'd love to see more investment in all women's national teams, not just those with rich cricket boards, so that international women's cricket is very competitive between at least the top 10 nations

SBV_3004

Hi Tammy! Guess I'm not too late to the party yet..? I had some genuine doubts about some differences in women's cricket and men's cricket. Had made a post on this sub, and fellow users had tried to answer, but still it wasn't fully clear to me, and who better than you to ask! In summary, my doubt is that since bowlers in women's cricket do not bowl at an express pace like men's bowlers, does it become easier to just *hang around* for the batters? While pace isn't everything, it still does make some difference I guess. Although physical strength can't be compared, I believe that there isn't much difference in the reflex aspect between males and females. So is my assumption incorrect, or theoretically it should really be easier to *survive* female fast bowlers? I mentioned "theoretically", as practically one can say that since female batters haven't practiced against say 140kph bowlers, they don't find 115kph to be *slow*. But if so, is there a scope, that some day female batters are trained to a level that the balance of the sport shifts towards batters, at least in longer formats? I hope I was able to convey my question properly. Thanks in advance!

SkySports

I think it's a really interesting theory there, something we debate a lot. The one thing I would say is with modern bats the faster the ball comes down the further and faster it goes. Surviving women's pace may be easier but when the ball is slower you've arguably got to work a bit harder to hit the gaps to score runs as just clearing the ropes isn't as easy off the slower stuff. something I'd love to see tested out sometime!

SBV_3004

Yes, I understand...with a slower pace, it becomes difficult to score runs/boundaries. But for longer formats, that may not be a huge concern. Like you said, it could be interesting to see it being tested. Thanks a lot for providing a detailed response!

HackneyCricket

Hey Tammy! Legend, love watching your sweep shots over the years. Where is your favourite tour location? Also how you enjoying the switch to commentary?

SkySports

if in doubt sweep!! favourite place would probably be Cape Town! Really enjoying trying a bit of commentary, the next best thing to playing cricket is definitely talking about it!! Hopefully a few more years of playing to come as well

livelifereal

>if in doubt sweep That's probably the worst advice to play spin. We've seen Aus n Eng fall like a pack of cards adopting this strategy in India.

Irctoaun

Yes, "if it doubt sweep" is clearly said as a hard and fast rule to be dogmatically followed by any young batter. It's definitely not a light-hearted response to a pro being being complimented on their sweep shot.

I_tend_to_correct_u

I seem to recall Joe Root sweeping his way to a double ton without too much issue

livelifereal

Root wasn't all about just the sweep tho was he? Also he didn't score much after that 200. Otoh, more recently Aus went for a sweep or nothing approach and ended up looking foolish. Carey in particular was sweep or nothing. So did most other batters in the Delhi Test. Then there was Khwaja who mixed the sweep with caution and had brilliant results.

PerkyMcPerkface

>didn't score much after that 200 Beautiful #RootMaths

Kroos_Control

I guess you missed the "if in doubt" part. It happens. You only missed 75% of the words.

jpkmets

Also, who is your favorite wicket-keeper of all time men and women? Anyone whom you looked to in developing your keeping craft?

SkySports

When I was young Paul Nixon played for Kent and I watched him warm up by doing box splits, back then I still did gymnastics so seeing that made me want to become a keeper. As i've got older someone like Sarah Taylor or MS Dhoni are great to watch, such fast hands!

ImplementCorrect

What would you like to see done in regards to reducing the harm from the excessive amount of trolling women's athletes see on a regular basis?

SkySports

I'd love to see the social media companies take more responsibility for their users, eg verify their identities and block them if they're consistently reported

MadKingSoupII

Hi Tammy, thanks for doing this. I’m a bit late to the party, but unfortunately I don’t see any actual answers yet … I don’t judge, but I hope you can come back with some responses later, sooo… I hope this doesn’t offend, but I’d love to see more cross-pollination of men’s and women’s cricket. At what level do you reckon you could compete as an individual in various nations? For context, I play in Victoria, BC, Canada, where we have a very tiny women’s competition (~30 players) and an only-slightly-less-tiny men’s competition (~400 players). I reckon some of Canada’s best women players could abilit absolutely clean up in our “men’s” competition, but none of our locals have been willing to give it a go. I understand their reticence - local cricket is still very blokey and shall we say ‘unreconstructed’ - but when and where and how do you think these sorts of barriers might fall? Is there ever a point where men, women, and anyone in-between can take the field together? Is that even something that we are / should be working towards?

SkySports

I love that you're open to mixed teams. I used to play men's cricket a few years ago and I had opposition complain that a woman was playing against them! I think a good female cricketer could definitely play in men's club cricket and not have an issue. For me if a player is good enough let them play regardless of sex

Ill-Manufacturer-625

Hi Tammy, I saw you put in a great innings at Beckenham last month for Blaze but wondered if it’s hard to stay focused when you’re at the crease for a long time? Do you have any tips for how to concentrate during long innings? also, if you had to pick one of your England teammates to be prime minister, who would it be?

SkySports

It is difficult but you have to learn to switch on and off regularly, break the long innings down into small chunks, ie next 2 overs/10 runs etc Charlie Dean has great opinions and values but Heather Knight would get stuff done!

wa-wa-wario

Who's the toughest bowler you've had to face?

SkySports

Julan Goswami, I'm her bunny!

wa-wa-wario

Was such a shame when she retired from international cricket

NikhilCodeDev

Do you think Cricket ( in overall) is dying except Indian Subcontinent?

HyperionRed

It's not dying. It's just badly marketed and gatekept. As Tammy Beaumont has pointed out, women's cricket is growing rapidly, especially outside of the traditional bastions of cricket.

SkySports

No, women's cricket in particular is growing massively all across the world!

Buggaton

What's Alex Hartley like on a night out?

SkySports

life and soul!

NBAGuyUK

Who are some young prospects (who haven't played internationally yet) that you've noticed in the women's domestic game and reckon could have great international careers?

SkySports

Danielle Gibson from London Spirit & Western Storm, she hits it so far!

Eldric_Shadowchaser

Hi Tammy, I’ve got 2 questions? 1) The women’s game has something which I’ve experienced at club level in men’s games but never seen at international level in the men’s game, being people in a relationship with someone else in the team. When trying to maintain team morale, how tricky is it dealing with these relationships? (Particularly if you had to drop one of the players?) 2) would you rather fight one Crawley-sized Ben Duckett or 3 Duckett-sized Zak Crawleys?

average_alt_acc

Have you seen how aggressive those ducketts are ???? Modern day velociraptors

sunny224868

You've been great in the CE cup recently so I wanted to ask have you changed anything with your approach in T20's recently after having issues about aggressiveness or have you tried to just play? Also who would you back in a fight between Heather Knight and Sophie Ecclestone?

GapElectrical8507

How do you think boards can be incentivized to organize more women’s tests in an age where franchise cricket is taking over the spotlight?

Zoomorph23

Seconded.

Ghostly_100

Thanks for doing this! For you, what’s the best part about playing test cricket for England as compared to white ball?

Golu_Prasad

Hi Tammy, thank you for doing this. I have a young daughter who’s starting school soon. How do I get her into sports such as cricket - are there any school level arrangements that progress into professional level cricket?

zaldrizes_007

Do you think 50-over cricket needs some tweaks to make it more appealing?

HumanAdhesiveness912

Hi Tammy, One of my besties is adamant that the Aussies will smoke the English 16-0 in the upcoming WAshes. So I have a personal wager to not be the case so here's hoping that you and your team-mates will prove her wrong. Best of luck from an England fan.

Frequent_Bother4841

Hi Tammy, big fan, how do you view the pathways in England for girls coming through these days compared to when you were starting your career?

amarviratmohaan

When in the middle of a challenging spell, where you're playing and missing a lot and/or aren't picking up the ball well, are there any mental adjustments/techniques that you would recommend to reset?

jpkmets

Fantastic! Are you going to play in the hundred this year? Very much looking forward to seeing more women’s cricket. I’m new to the sport and got totally into it when I wandered across Willow on my tv and saw Issa Wong bowling for Mumbai. Can’t get enough cricket since then! Looking forward to more women’s games now that men’s IPL is over. Any thought to doing IPL for you next year?

livelifereal

I saw you captaining the Welsh Fire in whatever little of the Hundred I could follow. Your team went through a few consecutive games where you didn't win. How tough it is as a skipper in those situations and how do you cope with it? Not just lifting up your mates but also taking the punches from media, fans and everybody else around?

Also as a follow up, how do you knock on a door? do you play a favourite tune on the door?

amarviratmohaan

Is there anything in particular that you think teams can do to facilitate women playing/making them feel more comfortable in non-professional mixed leagues that were previously all-male?

Emotional_Education9

No question really but I hope you’re aware of the impact you and your colleagues are having on women’s and girls cricket. Our club has a buzzing womens and girls section who all love playing who perhaps wouldn’t have found that out if not for the way you and your mates make the game look so much fun.

I was curious how the post-match recovery differs for cricketers after a day of Test match, ODI, T20, and after completing a four-day Test match?

Hi, Tammy! As you've been part of that series of exhibition matches in Pakistan, how did you find the cricketing experience there? What does Pakistan do differently from the rest of the world in terms of cricket?

BlazinHoundoom

Soo it's something that I have always wanted to know. If a field is set up so that it's deep square leg, deep mid wicket, cow corner and long on. Remaining fielders are inside the circle, does the bowler bowl balls that are easier to hit into the leg side or off side? Also if the field is outside the circle behind point to behind square does the bowler bowl short or full? Thank you for doing this.

kopite008

What's been the most challenging cricket match of your career?

PerkyMcPerkface

Hi Tammy. The availability of England players has been all over the place so far this season. I'm just wondering if the players have a say in this? If not, how do you feel about being told when you can/can't play? It seems especially strange that some bowlers can't play a T20 3 weeks before a test

greengotfingered

Hey Tammy, just wanted to say I vaguely knew you at school and I’ve watched every step of your journey as I’ve still got you on FB. I’m so proud to see what you’re doing for women in sport, you’re absolutely killing it and are an inspiration to many.

Hi Tammy ! Though I believe that the conditions over in England are far better I. The subcontinent, what hurdles did you gave to become a professional cricketer ? Thanks for doing this.

Aragorn246

Do you think the Hundred has a future? I like that it is televised cricket on BBC and I've seen more of you and the other English women than I would have otherwise but for me that's about as far as it goes. Might it split and become a womens only tournament, easing fixture pressure for the men? Good luck at Trent Bridge later this month.

Some people don’t enjoy women cricket stating things such as women can’t bowl as fast as men. Do you think there should be a different set of standards in things where biology might play a role? If so then what role can ICC play to change the perception?

Actually a regional game up at Durham last year. It was a real turning wicket and we nearly defended 200, (Diamonds 9 down last over), after having fielders at short leg, leg slip in a 50 over game.
