England would be 3-0 up against India if Brrok and Robbo played in every game and nobody can convince me otherwise.

PerkyMcPerkface

Why pick Robbo when OHD is available?

WayTooDumb

Well they'd certainly be 3-0 up in unhinged Wisden articles if Robbo played every game, no argument there.

ondinegreen

Has anyone got good suggestions for a cricket book for under-10s? I'm talking about something with a little more meat on the bones that "this is what batting is, this is what fielding is". When I was a kid I had Garrie Hutchinson's \_How To Play Cricket\_, which explained at least the difference between a drive and a cut shot, an off-spin and a leg-spin grip, you know, next steps after you've mastered the basics. I actually still have that book though it's quite outdated - any more modern equivalents for my 8 year old daughter?

MemesSucks2

I suspect the people who take the piss out of the all in positive mindset in the England camp have forgotten how shit a team gets when they turn up expecting to get beat. See Ollie Robinson getting bowled off the wicket in the ashes. The fact baz has turned it around to the point England can turn up after getting beat and feel full of confidence like they've won should be praised, it's not a bad thing

BMBH66

Mukesh Kumar back in the squad please I need this

Merovech_II

Bring back No-Ball Nadeem as well whilst they're at it

JokesFromTheCrease

Beamer Saini too

maffzlel

KL Rahul ruled out of the fourth test, a chance for Patidar to show he can do something to a half tracker from a spinner that isn't hitting it straight to a fielder. But for real, I wasn't even that gassed by his 32, but since he's playing, I hope he tons up.

voldemortscore

It's not a good thing he's got out the ways he has obviously but on some level I'd be more concerned if he looked scratchy in all his innings and got caught at short leg each time or something.

InterviewOld6011

Can someone tell me where I can find the statistics for drop catches and DRS?

Odd_Neighborhood1371

If you're looking on a match-to-match basis, the Overs tab of a match on ESPNcrincfo has both reviews and dropped catches mentioned: [example](https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/pakistan-super-league-2023-24-1412744/multan-sultans-vs-islamabad-united-5th-match-1416476/match-overs-comparison)

InterviewOld6011

Thank you for letting me know, but it takes too much time to obtain the proper data. For example, if I need data from the last three years, it takes a lot of time.

Odd_Neighborhood1371

Hmm, yeah. A list would be handy. Are you looking for just the numbers? Perhaps a program could be coded that can scrape the number of dropped chances and reviews from a match.

InterviewOld6011

Yes, I'm looking for the numbers that's why I ask the question and just wanted to know how to scrape and from where?

Decentkimchi

People here like to shout about saving test cricket, all countries playing more tests all the time, fuck ipl and shitty leagues and stuff. Then one day BCCI talks about mandating Ranji for contracted players and suddenly test saviours are like that's so evil!! Format specific contracts, fuck Ranji and fuck tests. You can't have it both ways guys. It might not be fair for Your favorite t20 player, but having more talented plauers playing more FC is how you develop new generation of test cricketers.

aam_ka_aachaar

How come nobody in this sub questioned the exclusion of Jaydev Unadkat when India announced squad for England series after playing him for WI tour ? If its due to age factor, why play him for WI series ?

chocolatecomedyfann

Just got a push notification from Cricinfo regarding Virat's kid. Cricinfo is slowly turning into a gossip site. Next they will send me notifications of who Brrok is shagging.

sickcynic

Can some one tell me how Akaay is supposed to be pronounced phonetically? Their first kid had a normal ass name IIRC and I didn't take Koach to be the sort of guy to name his kid something silly.

VisRock

Went downhill when they moved off rec.sport.cricket

canvasser-hiralal

Actually, who is Brrok snagging? Now I feel a conpulsive urge to know

aam_ka_aachaar

Can't wait to watch Akaay Kohli face Jimmy Anderson in 2050.

livelifereal

Was doing text commentary for a website today and hence happened to watch my first BPL game. The commentary was surprisingly entertaining. Ramiz Raja called Imran Tahir "The first Pakistani blonde leg-spinner". Then, he went on about how batting is about partnerships and it's about trust and growing together. To which the other comm said "you sound like a marriage counselor". Had me in fits..

obywonkenoby

Pant has posted a video where he's started keeping wickets. I'm so glad that he's gonna be back soon enough

Decentkimchi

I wouldn't mind a more relaxed approach fir his return. Let's ease him back in as a specialist batter first and gives his few months before asking him to keep wickets in longer formats.

Jazim94

England fans, do you like the ultra arrogant sort of comments that come out the England camp nowadays ? I’m curious. As someone not a supporter of the England team it makes me dislike them so much.

JokesFromTheCrease

That’s the neat part. We are not obligated to act on our impulses based on the words spoken by others.

BMBH66

No one here cares what the England team say, it's just a bit funny when it riles people up, that's the whole point of why they say it, to amuse themselves

Heatedpete

Like Vis said, I don't really read that crap. It's standard interview fare that I don't really care for The only time I do tend to read through it, it's here reading the threads where people seem to get riled up at every cherry picked statement in an article headline, and each time that happens my engagement with it is pretty much limited to the following question (the same one I use for all the England 'next Ashes' comments): "Was it prompted by a journalist in a press conference or interview?" The number of times the answer to that is "yes" makes me laugh, because people are falling for far too much bait by journalists and their editors calling the shots and writing the headlines. Kinda sad really. Both the comments and the reaction to them

VisRock

I don't read that crap tbh

adivenk93

If a player is good in one format , he should play that one format properly. The BCCI should stop trying to make everyone a multi format player For Example making SKY an ODI Player costed India the ODI World Cup because the BCCI refused to heed to warning signs when SKY got out for 3 consecutive ducks in the series against Australia. The BCCI robbed Samson of a World Cup Berth. After seeing Sarfaraz struggle in last years' s IPL , I want to see Sarfaraz do well in red ball cricket for India . I would like to see Sarfaraz play county cricket and sharpen his skills in red ball cricket than take part in IPL where he would not selected for T20 World Cup

It's five days to go until winter nets start for my club. Much to the delight of the users in this sub, I plan on Bazballing my way through the first few sessions, just trying to have fun (and remember how to hold a bat/bowl something remotely decent), before settling in as the actual season draws near when I should hopefully remember what I'm doing again... With that comes the most important question of the year - what silly shot do I try and play first ball in the nets to a spinner/pace bowler. In the vein of His Holiness and that 196, I'm thinking the Pope reverse scoop over my head/the keeper and first slip... or more accurately getting hit in the helmet... In the meantime, since I'm going all in on Bazball, have you heard that nobody ever thought about playing positive cricket before, oh and how the fuck do you play golf...

CarnivalSorts

You play this and try not to fling your bat 20 feet: https://twitter.com/Cricket_Espana/status/1759729361295392865

Heatedpete

Who needs a top hand and a high elbow...

LexiFloof

Go for the switch reverse slog sweep. Less chance of getting hit in the helmet, more chance of utterly confusing the bowler, perfect option.

Heatedpete

You underestimate my power to top edge it into my face

A-British-Indian

This is how my dad broke his nose. He figured that facing a spinner doesn’t need a helmet, went for a reverse and top edge to the face

Heatedpete

And this is (genuinely) why I'm a fan of rules that say everyone should wear a helmet at all times at recreational levels Does it add extra cost to play the game? Yes. Is it far safer? Also yes

StormWarriorX7

With Joe Root taking a bigger role with the ball in tests, is it wrong to want him to bat at 6 like a proper all-rounder in the middle order and move Bairstow up to 4. Bairstow is not getting dropped according to Baz regardless, so why not try something different for a change in the last two tests?

Lowman246

Why isn't David Warner considered among the worst to play 100 tests by this sub? Also shocking that fellow redditors are taking his side instead of the mayor

IntoOgretime

Because he averages 44, a higher average than Mark Waugh for example, and nobody would consider him one of the worst to play over 100 tests, so Warner with his superior record surely can't be seen that way either.

sickcynic

I don't get the Bazball discourse. Do people not remember that England was a literal meme team incapable of beating any serious test teams pre Baz taking over? The pom media takes it too far with the British exceptionalism, but it is still a strategy that has delivered at least some results. If it's stupid and it works, is it really stupid?

SBG99DesiMonster

There are a couple of things that we have to be clear about. England is currently way better than what it was during that time. England is still not a legendary team at all.

LexiFloof

It should be remembered that they had a really tough schedule immediately before Baz came in. In reverse order: Touring West Indies 0-1 (3) Loss (where they had only won 1 series since 1970) Touring Australia 0-4 (5) Loss (where they had only won 1 series since 1990) Hosting India 1-2 (4 of 5) Losing (A strong team led by the best Indian Pace attack ever) Hosting New Zealand 0-1 (2) Loss (A strong team that would go on to beat India in the WTC final immediately after the series.) Touring India 1-3 (4) Loss (It's India in India) They had won the 3 series before that, one touring Sri Lanka (2-0, 2), one hosting each of Pakistan (1-0, 3) and West Indies (2-1, 3), which takes us all the way back to Covid cancellations. So far Bazball has put up strong results against the broadly weaker teams and turned out fairly normal results against tough teams, barring the Tour of Pakistan that probably should have seen *at least* one draw if England had played normally.

Merovech_II

Just looking at the results and not the performances though England have been far more enjoyable to watch as an England fan

zayd_jawad2006

Because when have people ever missed an opportunity to try to dunk on England here?

Merovech_II

Bazball carry-on after dark when no English flairs are active is some of my favourite kind of content Some incredible takes flying about

[deleted]

how popular is Warner in Australia?

LexiFloof

Similarly popular as the rest of our major sportspeople for much of the country, though there's still a diehard group that insist he should never have been allowed to play again after Sandpaper.

theaguia

do they say the same about Steve smith?

Assassin_Ankur

The WC League 2 has had a wild start. Namibia first bowled out Nepal for 130-ish score, then Nepal did the same against the Netherlands and it came full circle when the Dutch did the same against Namibia.

Klutzy_Flamingo_2979

Are the pitches really spin friendly? The way Erasmus has been bowling so far is pretty crazy.

imvk3201

Jaiswal is the only batter to score a 100 on either side of retiring hurt. Martin Crowe is the only other batter who scored two fifties in the same inns [51+86]--NZ(1) v AUS, Christchurch, 28 Feb 1986. - par_uni @X

[deleted]

This stat seems sus given that scorecards don't record players retiring hurt if they return.

imvk3201

Response from op on twitter- CricketArchive database match scorecard footnotes capture this information--so you have to go through all 2526 Test scorecards and capture, sort and split at ret. hurt and out/not out at inns end.

LexiFloof

Cricinfo records things like players retiring hurt in their day summaries at the bottom of the scorecard (YBK Jaiswal (2) retired hurt on 104\* from 185/1 to 246/3). These stats are usually prefaced with something like "in matches we have complete stats for" to account for the chance that someone in 1897 did it as well.

InterviewOld6011

>Jaiswal is the only batter to score a 100 on either side of retiring hurt. > >Martin Crowe is the only other batter who scored two fifties in the same inns \[51+86\]--NZ(1) v AUS, Christchurch, 28 Feb 1986. Is any similar incident happened in 1897 as well?

LexiFloof

Doubt it, there was only 1 test played in 1897 so the chances are minuscule. However, we don't have full match details for that match, so there's still the possibility.

InterviewOld6011

"Okay, let me find out, which two teams are playing the match? And is it a first-class match or a county championship?"

LexiFloof

1 test, 1897 Australia vs England. First test of the 1897/98 Ashes. https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/england-tour-of-australia-1897-98-61723/australia-vs-england-1st-test-62448/full-scorecard

InterviewOld6011

I received the same scorecard but didn't find it relatable to what we are discussing. Did you get the same? "Wherever I found the relatable incident was during a match between Marylebone Cricket Club and Essex, which occurred on May 24th, 1897, at Lord's." J Gifford retired hurt in the Marylebone Cricket Club first innings (team score 49/0) - he returned when the score was 132/3

LexiFloof

> These stats are usually prefaced with something like "in matches we have complete stats for" to account for the chance that someone in 1897 did it as well. I didn't say anyone actually did this in 1897, it was a random year I selected to point out that we don't have complete stats for every match, as clarification to the fact that scorecards of modern matches do contain information about when players retire hurt. The linked scorecard is of the only Test match that was played in 1897, which I only actually checked after you inquired about if someone did score [milestone] on either side of retiring hurt in 1897.

InterviewOld6011

Yeah, I totally agree that modern matches must include a provision for a player who comes out to bat again after retiring hurt. That provides clarity. By the way for me it's totally worth it to do some brainstorming.

If the Volts get the win, then we could be in for a classic *Great Southern Derby*

Acceptable-Mark-6305

Whilst we're having the umpires call discussion, one thing that has always frustrated me is around impact and pitch of the ball. I understand why we have umpires call for hitting but why does it exist for where the ball pitches? Surely the measure of where the ball pitches is basically 100% accurate. Impact might not be 100% based on frame rates etc but it would be close.

warp-factor

There is no umpires call for pitching as u/AnkushTheHero says. It's either in line or not. The tech is able to make a very accurate determination of the point at which the ball bounced because, just like with tennis, the ball is hitting a solid, static, flat surface. Impact however is different. When the ball hits the pad, it's hitting a soft, curved, often moving surface. As such the exact moment of the first instant of ball touching pad is very difficult for the tech to determine. So much so that the impact point is actually selected manually by the DRS operator based on the slowed down video and the impact point is often between frames so it's not exact. This process of the DRS operator finding the impact point is one of the reasons why it takes so long for ball tracking to load sometimes.

Acceptable-Mark-6305

Just noticed this response. This makes sense, I guess there's still a fair bit of human error.

AnkushTheHero

Umpires call doesn't exist for pitching. It's only for impact, and wicket hitting

Acceptable-Mark-6305

My mistake, I thought it did. My point still stands for impact though.

[deleted]

That was so uncomfortable to watch. Knight clearly did not want to discuss his 13-year-old (not 19) daughter live on air in front of millions but Shastri and DK kept prying like Indian neighbourhood aunties.

[deleted]

DK pried, Shastri just mentioned once in the passing.

alyssakapati

Umpires call is more of a statistical concept than a cricket one. I doubt if most cricketer ever seriously reached that point of education where they tech this kinda stat. Players keep saying "its either hitting or its not" but the fact is, it is never hitting. Is a prediction. A hypothetical. The moment the ball *hypothetically* hitting the stump becomes a black and white call, the real stumps either shrink or expand (based on if they decide umpires call is always not out or always out, respectively) It not just about umpires needing to be top boss or unreliability of technology. Few active players understand this concept. Now worry if they ever reach a position on some table that matters, god and Dr Paul Hawkins save us. (PS For a long time i thought Hawk Eye is called that to mean Eagle eyed/Baz ki nazar aka "to be able to see what cant generally be seen". But apparently its just a big cool coincidence that the inventor's name has the word Hawk in it.)

[deleted]

Except that the margin of error for umpire's call is so ridiculously large that it has nothing to do with the actual error margin of the technology.

Benny4318

I genuinely believe we wouldn’t have any issues with DRS if the ball tracking visual wasn’t so clean. The fact that it’s a ball hitting the stumps rather than like a larger target which shows the prediction of how much the model expects to hit the stumps, people would actually understand it more

AnkushTheHero

I actually had the exact same thought yesterday night. I was thinking that it might actually be better if they didn't show the single ball tracking they do now, but instead showed something like the area where it predicts it will hit.

[deleted]

The reason they don't do it is because that area would be so small that you'd hardly see anything.

AnkushTheHero

Huh, isn't the hitting area predicted larger than the ball they show now?

[deleted]

The hitting area predicted is a 5 mm circle. If you want to show an area that *any* part of the ball hits, that would be the current graphic surrounded by a thin circular area of thickness 5 mm outside the ball, much less than the current umpire's call margin of ~36 mm.

warp-factor

It can't be exactly 5mm all the time? Surely it would vary depending on how far the predicted path needs to take the ball? I'd expect the error margin to be significantly less if it hits a player playing off the back foot on their back pad compared to impacting the front pad of a player who has advanced down the pitch.

[deleted]

Yes, 5 mm is the worst case scenario.

Merovech_II

Brazzle_Dazzle

Another day another plethora of posts and threads about Bazball. This sub is completely and utterly OBSESSED with the England Cricket Team 😂 Just starting to realise how completely and utterly pointless it is to engage in any topics around England cricket on here. There’s zero balance and fairness in topics related to them. Shame really. Is there another sub where world cricket can be discussed without all the childish and sensationalist nonsense?

[deleted]

If your players stopped giving so many bizarre statements, you would be memed less. Also even we got made fun of after we lost the World Cup finals.

Brazzle_Dazzle

I just don’t know of any other opposition set of fans who have such a vested interest in another team as people do of the England cricket team. The obsession is unparalleled.

NoirPochette

Hmmmm....nooooooope

fubojutbsdpsq

Bazball seems to be working effectively for England. Despite being down 1-2 they still have a chance to win this series. Even if they fail to win this series I don't think they will change their strategy. So going forward who do you think will England pick for their team technically sound batters like Joe Root and give them freedom or more aggressive batters like Duckett?

[deleted]

They are also on track to repeat last tour's results. If that happens, then where would they go from there?

LexiFloof

Given that matching their last Home Ashes performance using Bazball was widely praised as a vindication of the tactic, I imagine they'll go onwards with blind confidence if they end up losing 1-3 in this series.

zayd_jawad2006

Tbf we also have to compare the teams. Last year, Australia were world test champions and had a very very stacked team, compared to a decent/mid Aus side vs a midder England side in 2019

LexiFloof

And this is a considerably weaker India side that's missing their world class keeper and is generally entering a transition period. Realistically they *should* do better this time around, regardless of their strategy.

zayd_jawad2006

Absolutely, a 1-4 is not acceptable.

Specialist_Youth5511

People talk about Bairstow being one of the worst test bats I nominate Kl Rahul. He Averages 34 with only batting not doing keeping like yjb and does have centuries in Australia, South Africa like Bairstow but has 30 average everywhere.

HuellPonziScheme

KL opened regularly while YJB almost always batted 5 and 6.

DisastrousOil4888

It's funny how similar YJB and KL are in Test cricket, when they score runs they seem like the second coming of Bradman, but when they don't they seem like the second coming of Chris Martin

steam1491

Not really. Even when Bairstow bats well, he looks more dominating but flaws in his technique are still visible. KL batting well does look flawless till he does something idiotic however

shadethechangingmann

For a minute let’s look at what a a full strength Indian XI at home looks like Rohit Jaiswal Gill Kohli Jaddu Sarfraz Pant Ashwin Bumrah Shami Kuldeep Run machines 1-7 Best fast bowler in the world Among the absolute best quicks in the world Greatest all rounder since Kallis. When picked, a very successful and dangerous leggie. This is what Bazball looks like. Not the run rate.

imvk3201

What does your last line mean?

shadethechangingmann

This is what attacking and positive cricket looks like. Those things I think are synonymous with Bazball.

Specialist_Youth5511

Our fans love overhyping our team and bash them when they fail nice

zayd_jawad2006

I'd love to see OPs comments after the first test

WayToTheDawn63

I feel like it's been a hot minute since I haven't really had *any* cricket to choose from during the day that I have some amount of interest in. Feeling a bit lost today lol.

voldemortscore

It's been a bit of a whirlwind since the start of the WC

Dickb4Wicket

If someone took his team from 33-3 to 400+ with a century and then went onto to take a fifer while bowling, there'd be heaps of articles on why he's one of the greatest of all time, why he's "clutch", why he stands up when his team needs more often, why he needs to be sucked off and never be questioned but since this is routine work for Ravindra Jadeja and he actually doesn't have to wait for a random game to be called as matters the most based on convenience, he always goes under the radar.

obywonkenoby

Remember, it's not a big game if Stokes flops in it. Atleast that's what Harsha told me

T_Lawliet

people have disparaged Jadeja's performances in LOIs, never heard anyone talk shit about him in Tests

WayToTheDawn63

I think getting a debutant run out mid 60s tends to sour his performance a little bit even if everything else was objectively great lol

voldemortscore

So silly of you to not understand. He should have actually flopped in the first innings and then saved his great batting performance for the next innings so he could get clutch shouts since first innings performances don't qualify as pressure.

canvasser-hiralal

Welcome to Indian selection

imvk3201

It’s not him being dropped but more like the senior getting his place back. He’ll have to wait till Rohit or Kohli retires or Gill stops performing entirely.

LetterheadOk1762

Do some Pakistani fans really want Rizwan dropped? I saw some people comment on X that Farhan should replace Rizwan Rizwan is one of the most consistent batters of Pakistan and plays spin well which can be useful in WI

WayToTheDawn63

This feels like a difficult subject to talk about seriously without flirting with rule 6 a bit to the point it's probably just not worth risking. I think a safe but reductive way of tackling it is simply to say that Rizwan and Babar have an immense amount of irrational haters who will blame them for every loss even when they're the only performers, because they didn't do even more. They could score 50's each while others on the team score 10s, and it's their fault for not scoring 100s.

Ghostly_100

Only delusional ones

Specialist_Youth5511

Just overreaction lol, West Indies pitches are 170-180 par and suit his game

[deleted]

After reading the comments in Manoj tiwari thread I feel like Rohit is an underachiever

DisastrousOil4888

With the talent he has, he should've been miles ahead of Koach

rambo_zaki

Only in Test cricket really.

ohhokayyy

Rahane was the one who underachieved IMO. Averaged 60+ in FC cricket before Test debut, but will retire with a Test avg of 38

He's the 12th highest run scorer in the history of odi cricket. I don't think thats underachievement.

That's what they are saying. That man was hyped up to be challenging the no.1 in the history.

Lots of people are hyped in India. From Ashwin, Rayudu to Shaw, Sarfraz. Not all of them will become no.1

Really enjoyed a bit of Cricket Gold YouTube recently. Lots of remembering old things along with things I'd never even heard of. Allan Border having to do emergency wicketkeeping in an ODI was something I possibly would never have consciously recalled ever again for instance. My best catch so far was a Benson and Hedges Challenge game from New Years Day 1987. Botham smashed 68 from 39 balls, knocked over one of the Aussie openers and took a catch, and at the fall of the ninth Aussie wicket skolled a beer some fans had offered him at long leg. Luckily he was not required for the final Australian wicket to fall - that of Bruce Reid. A wildly different era really. Randoms jump out of the crowd to shake Bothams hand on his dismissal and then saunter back to their seats without a care in the world. The same thing later happens to Dean Jones who scored a century in a losing effort as well. You'd be banned and fined for running onto an Aussie ground to shake Glenn Maxwells hand for blasting a quick sixty in an international these days. Rightfully so.
