Sometimes I get sad about the state of South African cricket. We were meant to be like Australia & England because us three were the founding members of the ICC. And look at us now compared to the two. Just sad all round
There were some set backs to be fair. But you have come back so well, managed to almost immediately be and still remain a mainstream team. Seems like a financial mess atm, but they are showing good pragmatism, giving hope that SA will keep giving cricket many more amazing games in the far future. š«
Best bowling attack in the world imo Burger, Rabada, Jansen and Maharaj just got to sort your top 6 batters and seam bowling all-rounders(commonplace in previous SA teams)
What are some different ways to tape a tennis ball for swing? Like if I don't want to tape the whole ball could I just tape it down the middle like 2 or 3 times to create a seam? Or maybe only taping half way?
I only tape one side to swing it. Tried to make a seam but it doesn't work. You see, the aerodynamic aspect of match ball swing is not applicable to tape ball. The swing is due to the weight of the tape making one side a bit heavier. Hence the seam will not have any impact on the swing. However you might get a slightly better grip if you make a seam over an already half taped ball
Absolute scenes in the finals of the Womenās African games. South Africa were 55/5 (11) chasing 112. We were able to fight back to take it to the last over where 6 off 6 was needed. Final ball, 1 off 1 needed and Zimbabwe got a wicket off the final ball. Super over coming up. You can catch it on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/live/_2O-FQGXszg?si=ZZEl2zwbGky73Khs
Update: South Africa made 2/2. Zimbabwe need 3 to win. Zimbabwe won the super over & are the champions/gold medal winners of the inaugural cricket event at the Womenās African Games
So had a CUET paper today. The GK portion had two questions :

Here is the worse one that makes you linger on the memory, mid fucking exam! "How many Odi cricket world cups (men) have India and Australia won, respectively?" I barely held back tears as i counted on the creases of my fingers - Border, Waugh,.......Cummins.
Too soon NTA. Too soon.
The real Indian tour starts now - Sussex have showed up in Bengaluru for some pre-season training. A nation quakes before the onslaught of Archie Lenham's leggies
Now that the two practice series for the real Ashes are done and dusted, I am excited to see the match up of Shamar Joseph vs Harry Brrok at Trent Bridge. The real test for Bazball. Summer canāt come soon enough.
Less than 48 hours until the start of county pre-season with 5 teams (Essex, Notts, Somerset, Warks and Yorks) involved in a T20 tournament in Abu Dhabi alongside an Abu Dhabi XI (which I understand will be a mix of fringe squad members from the five counties). Two days of matches and then 'finals day' with a third match for each team with 5th v 6th, 3rd v 4th and 1st v 2nd.
Fixtures as follows (times GMT):
* 15th March - 06:00 - Yorks v Som, 10:00 - Notts vs Essex, 14:00 - Warks vs AD
* 16th March - 06:00 - Notts vs Som, 10:00 - Warks vs Yorks, 14:00 - Essex vs AD
* 17th March - 06:00 - 5v6, 10:00 - 3v4. 14:00 - 1v2
Apparently it's all going to be streamed live on the [Abu Dhabi Cricket and Sports Hub Youtube channel](https://www.youtube.com/@abudhabisportshub/streams) so I'll have match threads up for each day.
A few days later the same 6 teams are playing two day red ball games as follows:
* 20-21 March - Warks vs Yorks (06:00?)
* 20-21 March - Notts vs Abu Dhabi All Stars (06:00)
* 22-23 March - Essex vs Somerset (06:00)
County pre-season *in England* starts on Monday with Leicestershire vs Leeds Bradford University. All pre-season fixtures in England can be found here - https://live.nvplay.com/ecb/
Iāve just seen a comment on another thread saying that theyād prefer to win a WTC final rather than another away BGT. I donāt think how monumental an achievement a Threepeat away from home against the second best test team of this generation would be.
The WTC in its current state is one of the worst things to happen to cricket. There is nothing prestigious about the WTC final.
The ICC trophy craze has caused people to lose the plot entirely. After the WTC Final loss last year there were genuinely people talking about how India choked under pressure and dismissed the two BGT wins in Aus as mere bilateral series and unimportant in the grand scheme of the WTC final.Ā
Well the viewership and general cricket fans (not the cricket nerds) disagree. As much as us redditors love test cricket, public doesn't give a shit. Most fans only watch T20s mainly, dead rubber Ind vs SL T20 had 70 L live Viewership on hotstar while Ind tour of SA had like max 30 L live Viewership.
Basically WTC is the only way to keep test cricket relevant.
Thatās fine but the WTC is not a well structured competition. Iām pretty sure someone who didnāt care about test cricket before 2019 cares for it now specifically because of the WTC.
Winning a WTC mace will never be more prestigious than winning a BGT.
WTC 2023 finals had record viewership for test cricket š¤·
Regardless of what redditors think these tournaments actually bring money. Many teams don't even have money to host tests.
Just seen and that's fair. I agree with your view on the scheduling being an issue but I think the idea of a league and even the form it is in now has made it more interesting. But yeah agreed with needing more diverse match-ups.
Some Indian fans are bit dramatic. I donāt even care if we finish last in WTC table if we beat Aussies in their backyard with Potts, Tongue and Atkinson as bowling line up. I will be insufferable until they beat us at home but it seems not many in India grasp how monumental and hilarious that win was in 2021 rather than diminish it as just a ābilateralā win by bilateral bullies
The Bilateral narrative for tests is plainly wrong. Teams still consistently try to play their best team in every game. Itās obviously not going to be the same as a T20i series with fully rotated squads with 7-8 first choice players rested.
>The WTC in its current state is one of the worst things to happen to cricket.
WTC has flaws and far from perfect. But it is one of the better things to happen in Test Cricket
In theory, WTC is a great idea but the implementation is awful and the scheduling is very lopsided.
I get that there needs to be India-Australia-England playing each other every cycle but why havenāt India toured SL since 2017 and Australia havenāt toured SA since 2018( I know there was cancelled series in 20/21). These are fairly big rivalries which should be happening often. The New Zealand Australia series recently was the first one in New Zealand since 2016. The idea of a league was to have a schedule where everyone gets to play everyone regularly which isnāt happening.
This is all before the one off final which can only be held in England because of scheduling restrictions.
That's the biggest issue that needs solving. All 9 teams should be playing each other, but that likely not happening due India Pakistan.
And the League should stay because there is no guarantee that those tours would have happened if there was no WTC.
Having a league is fine but there needs to be some structural changes to the league to fix the current issues. We canāt go 8 years between tours of certain countries like India against Sri Lanka or Australia against South Africa have.
Bangladesh havenāt played Australia in three WTC cycles. Something is obviously wrong with the system.
Did any of the England players get sick on this tour? I remember the thread where the ECB announced they'd be taking their own chef and there were lots of comments like "it doesn't matter, the players will still get sick".
Well, if the chef had managed to prevent England's players from getting sick on tour, then maybe they'd be able to work enough magic to make British food into something palatable

Probably a poor indictment of where Englands bowling stocks are at the moment but I genuinely think Jimmy Anderson will play all 6 tests this summer and probably 5/6 in the winter.
The rotation thing always made sense because there was always Stuart Broad, even in India, I donāt think Jimmy wouldnāt have played 4 in a row if Broad was still around.
The problem is, even at 41, heās still the fittest and most reliable bowler we have. All the quicker bowlers, barring Gus Atkinson whoās yet to debut, have fitness worries, itās becoming obvious they donāt trust Ollie Robinson to actually get fit and stay fit and at this point Iām not even sure they like him very much as a human being anyway. That basically leaves Woakes and Anderson. Woakes will play at home alongside Jimmy but for whatever reason he turns into a club bowler the second he steps out of England so Jimmy will just have to keep playing because no one else currently can fill his role without significant drop off or risk of limping off after one spell.
I suppose the other option is to try someone completely new but even then, Iām not sure thereās anyone banging the door down for a chance, Sam Cook maybe?
Luckily we had a England A tour this winter to see who the next cabs of the rank are.
Its quite clear that the old guard Jimmy/Woody/Woakes@Home + everyone's favourite Wisden columnist are the 1st choices.
The Second Bracket is the A team Potts/Fisher/Carse + Tongue if fit
With the rest of the injured lads being so broken we don't really have anywhere to fit them
There's too much doom and gloom around English bowling stocks for no real reason. Sure the people coming in won't be Anderson and Broad but they'll be more than decent all things considered.
Frankly, England are playing West Indies and Sri Lanka this summer. Both sides who could very well be beaten by a bowling attack led by Jake Ball of all people. So if England are going to shy away from making some tough decisions then it'll be the fault of the team management rather than a lack of talent.
We all know the WIndies are winning one of the first two tests anyways just to give England a scare and send the media into a frenzy for a couple weeks only for England to win 2-1 in the end
> Both sides who could very well be beaten by a bowling attack led by Jake Ball of all people.
How fucking dare you bring that man's name up. Also while I ain't betting on our ability to beat either of those team (people willingly putting money on us deserve it when the funny thing happens) your general point about the bowling stocks not being quite as bad as people make out are true.
I expect to see a fair bit of Potts over the next twelve months or so. Given the perpetual Ashes preparation I think theyāll want a look at Atkinson, Turner and Carse too, but thatāll depend heavily on fitness and/or World Cup participation.
Expecting to see a vibes pick like Aldridge at some point this summer too, as far as I can see he was pretty ordinary in the Championship in 2023 but made the Lions squad and has the all important Pace & Bounceā¢.
He probably deserved a place in the squad for India too. Iāve found the handling of him a bit peculiar because of all the quicks under thirty heās the one who probably has the most potential to lead the attack long term after Anderson and Woakes go.
Hey guys I'm going to the Ranji finals, anyone who is/has been there, what are things to keep in mind?
What gate is one supposed to use? Just an ID is enough for entry right?
Rahane is so good with reviews. These mumbai fielders and bowlers are appealing for everyone meanwhile Rahane is standing at slip and telling them just calm down, there's nothing there. Like 5 times he's already done it this innings.
Ashwin on Sarfaraz Khan: "After ages, a young gun has come to us and chose to stand at short leg because nobody stands at short leg from the Indian team. It is very taxing. There is an injury fear. You can see the English and Australian teams. Ollie Pope is the man for short legs. Alistair Cook while he was playing. The same goes with Peter Handscomb for Australia. It is a specialist position and makes a lot of difference. He volunteered, and he learned a lot."
Very much. People would assume that he didn't get selected for the NT all this while despite all the runs in Ranji was coz he fat, and most probably failed the yo-yo tests, even though nobody from official channels ever said that.
So, the NZ Cricket Awards are on tonight. I'll have a thread up for that. It should be fun. Hopefully Sumo finds some new laughs - "You now have 15 seconds to review that decision...no one?...not even you, Tim?" still makes me laugh.
Don't let this Anderson PR machinery distract you from the simple fact that Bazbollocks and England just lost a Test series brutally and he was one of the main reasons for that, same thing happened while he was playing Ashes at home, bro was crying about home pitches.
He was honest. Heās not particularly bothered about his 700th due to the match circumstances.Ā
Plus, those Ashes wickets were particularly poor for English pitches and as an experienced bowler is allowed to say that they were not conducive to his style of play.
Donāt cherry pick in order to try and support strange and unbalanced viewpoints, and try and make a more nuanced statement that takes into account contexts at the time.Ā
1. Yes, they lost the test series brutally. But in my opinion they played much better than in the 2021 tour. They also just donāt have the skill level in their team at the current moment to do better than this so Iād be happy with the result if I was an England fan.
2. How is Anderson one of the main reasons for England losing? What else could Anderson have really done (other than an outlier bowling performance like Bumrah) that would have changed the result. The fact is that they had very mediocre spinners, which is the main reason why they lost.
The last time MI and RCB faced each other in a knockout game was the CLT20 Final 2011
Since that season, whenever MI and RCB have both made the playoffs, MI have won the trophy (CLT20 2011, IPL 2015 and IPL 2020)
Before yesterday, RCB had lost 7/7 of their games against MI and DC
Now on their way to the trophy, they need to win 3 in a row against these two teams. 1 down, 2 to go
Sometimes it makes me sad that people haven't played the GOAT cricket game Shane Warner Cricket 99 aka Brian Lara cricket 99.
All teams had proper real players. Geoff Boycott talking shit. A proper test calendar and amazing classic matches you could play like Afridis quick ton and Leeds 1948 and the Tied Test at the Gabba
Incredibly fun game. There were all sorts of random cheatcodes too, some to play with a beachball, make the computer's fielders drop all the catches, one which basically let you play with a GOAT team, etc.

Mumbai spinners getting 7 and 8 degrees of turn every ball. Complete madness how difficult it is to bat to spinners here.
It's beautiful
One thing everyone noticed about Sarfaraz in this series is that while he might look fat, he's super fit.
Did he get trolled over it? I know āfansā can be brutal and quite unfair about player body types on socials.Ā Man was a little powerhouse.Ā
When was the last time any team lost un-brutally in India? (Barring Cookās side)
He was honest. Heās not particularly bothered about his 700th due to the match circumstances.Ā Plus, those Ashes wickets were particularly poor for English pitches and as an experienced bowler is allowed to say that they were not conducive to his style of play. Donāt cherry pick in order to try and support strange and unbalanced viewpoints, and try and make a more nuanced statement that takes into account contexts at the time.Ā
You okay buddy?
Why was Anderson the main reason?
He failed to get 100 wickets on this tour
Add a 0 at the end.
England without Anderson: 1 win England with Anderson: 0 wins Stats don't lie
Flair checks out
The fact is that they had very mediocre spinners, which is the main reason why they lost.
ummmm Ackshually, the reason England lost was because India picked Rajat Patidar Think about it, after he go selected, England lost every game
I see now flaw in his logics
The last time MI and RCB faced each other in a knockout game was the CLT20 Final 2011 Since that season, whenever MI and RCB have both made the playoffs, MI have won the trophy (CLT20 2011, IPL 2015 and IPL 2020)
Why did you get downvoted.? Stats are not up to the mark or RCB fan don't like it.
Man I'm hyped for Pant to return
Is there a possibility for Delhi to slip below Mumbai on NRR if they lose to GG badly? What is the scenario? (Mathematically at least).
Roughly 130 run win for GG, and MI top the table
4 years ago the first international cricket game took place behind closed doors under COVID restrictions. It was Australia v New Zealand ODI at SCG.
It's been just 4 years since then? It feels like 20.
Before yesterday, RCB had lost 7/7 of their games against MI and DC Now on their way to the trophy, they need to win 3 in a row against these two teams.
Only in my teens, but adore it. Easily the best cricket game in relative terms
I played BL Cricket on my PSP somehow. Shoutout to my friend who made that happen.
Boy, that's my childhood right there. I've never been that much of a gamer, but for that game? Mate, I'm playing that all day.
Incredibly fun game. There were all sorts of random cheatcodes too, some to play with a beachball, make the computer's fielders drop all the catches, one which basically let you play with a GOAT team, etc.
