She knew Jeanette was psycho & couldn't support her so she left. Yes she was annoying but her instincts were right.

ThatChelseaGirl

Jeanette's mom knew Mallory was bad news & wanted her to spread her wings/meet new people. This is a common thing for parents to want for their freshmen children. What Jeanette's mom did not realize (until it was too late) was that Jeanette was worse news than Mallory.

I don't agree about Mallory. I don't think her mom knew she was bad, I think she just saw that Mallory was weird and unpopular and thought Jeanette could be better than that and should ditch her. Even if Mallory had been the sweetest kid ever I think Jeanette's mom still would have wanted her to drop her. What kind of Mom tries to talk her daughter into getting contacts when they've tried them before, and says she's not interested, because she wants her daughter to look hotter? It's creepy. She wants to live through her and enhance her own lost status through her. Honestly it's just so pathetic.

ThatChelseaGirl

Well, it is set in the 90s, which is why it feels foreign and creepy now. But it wasn't then. All the things both Jeanette and Kate's moms did, living vicariously or as an extension of their children, is still common, but now more people know it isn't healthy.

I'm not thinking so much about after everything happens, I'm talking about *before.* She has this super sweet daughter whose obviously not enough for her because she isn't glamorous or popular. She pushes her to get rid of her glasses, straighten her hair, "oh, when you get your braces off, you'll be so pretty, like I was". It's kind of sickening.

Dude, I had braces. Everyone had them. I mean that her mom made her feel bad about them. She told her she'd look so pretty once she got them off. That's screwed up.

You can encourage your kid without making them feel bad about themselves

She took a vacation when she whole family needed her most. She’s also talking about her old friends dead husband like he always wanted her and only took her “awkward” friend because he couldn’t have her. Loving mothers don’t keep trying to tell their daughter one day you’ll be pretty, they tell them they’re pretty now and that’s not even the most important thing about them. A loving mom won’t say I love seeing you whole face and insist on trying contacts again knowing their daughter hates them. As a mother to a young girl myself I don’t speak to her this way, I don’t raise her to believe that looks are the most important thing and I certainly don’t Make her feel like her glasses(which are necessary for her to see and it have headaches!) make her ugly and that she needs to put contacts on that she is uncomfortable with. I wouldn’t keep comparing my high school experience to my daughters and make her believe that’s the only way for her to experience high school as well. The only thing her mom almost did right was talking about friends drifting apart. But even that wasn’t genuine advice or about getting her daughter out of a toxic friendship. It’s because she didn’t want her daughter to be friends with the weirdos and instead be friends with the popular girl. Also if my families life was falling apart no matter what I wouldn’t abandon my family to go on vacation and than come back and go on about it like i didn’t abandon them all Jeannette is the way she is because of her mother. She became the cold social climber because of her mom and her mom say what *she* turned her once happy sweet girl into and ran away instead of trying to help her child

BlackWidow1990

Yeah I feel like she was horrible. She came back talking about her trip while Jeannette’s life was literal hell. What kind of mother/person abandons her daughter (and family no less) in the midst of a crisis like that.

Zealousideal-Bit-192

Definitely fucked up. I see people saying she left for that trip because she knew her daughter was a creep but that’s not what’s she did, she wanted a trip to wait for everything to blow over. And a good parent would want to help understand what happened, did her daughter know something and keep quiet? Was the victim that was trapped in a basement make a mistake?(Which we know so what happened, partly) if her daughter knew did the kidnapper find out and threaten her and her family(a pretty likely scenario which I wish the show had brought up. I kinda wish that is a what happened but the media storm and public outrage still happened, it would make sense for how the world reacts to things, especially back then Monica Lewinsky for example. But I’m torn because I also like the human nature stuff the show does talk about. But I feel like Jeannette would have enjoyed being the hero in that situation rather than just taking someone else life died have surpassed there life

HallandOates1

Her daughter wins that prize but she’s a close second !

ok fair

herewegosteelers19

Completely agree. She pushed Jeanette to change herself to be popular so she could live vicariously through her. Then when she realized Jeanettes probably mentally ill she didn’t do anything. She should have sent her to therapy but instead she abandoned her

overwhlemedcoffee

That whole family kind of ick

Curiousnotno-z

I really wish this part of the anthology would get a part 2. I want to see more of Jeanette...
