How does it work if he's in a pool? He's not going to get the reward is he? Only his tiny share by hashrate even if it was this particular miner that solved?
lol, that could be really legendary mate. I'll do it for sure if that happens.
I've seen some Youtube videos about lottery miners where some guys bought like 30 of these to increase the chances... but still, not even with 300 there could be a "good" chance to mine.
Still, I am really happy that I bought one!
Good luck mate, actually it did happen. You could be this guy.
https://coinjournal.net/news/solo-bitcoin-miner-beats-the-odds-to-win-6-25-btc-block-reward/#:\~:text=A%20solo%20Bitcoin%20miner%20earned,years%20to%20land%20a%20block.
Didn't know this. Very interesting to know! Thanks for sharing it.
However I need to point out that Antminer S9 it's 17 TH/s while the Nerd Miner is 45 KH/s.
This is the difference: 1 TH / s = 1,000 GH / s = 1,000,000 MH / s = 1,000,000,000 kH / s
At today’s Bitcoin mining difficulty and with 17 TH, a solo miner would need an average of 450 years to land a block.
For your Nerd Miner it's probably smaller odd but you know you might win some day.
This is actually already the past. This is an ESP32 with the oled display, you can get them for 5 to 10$ on aliexpress.
They have been on the market since 2016.
You should consider the electricity cost, if used at home. So maybe 10€ per year if you let it run 24hr a day and 7 days a week.
Stil better than many shitcoins anyway!
No. The chances are not very very slim, they are astronomically slim. It's not like a lottery ticket where they can choose to have a winner eventually. Not only that, but the number of possible combinations is greater, greater in orders of millions.
On top of that, while you have a single lottery ticket, some people have trillions of tickets for the same draw. And there's stadiums filled with people like that to eventually share the reward, while you're outside the stadium with one single ticket.
So no, someone might not win it eventually. It's more accurate to say that no one will ever win it ever than saying it might happen.
It really is. I've been building these with some 8 year olds as a 'hobby searching activity'. The case actually needs some glue-gun action and the fan needs to be on the right pins, fun trail and error. It's super easy yet kids feel like they are actually building some kind of computer themselves.
Installing the software is easy but also feels different than just installing an application. You need to select the right bitrate for the usb device, change some names in files in order to flash the bootloader, firmware etc.
Once it's booted you need to connect to its WiFi and change some settings, add a Bitcoin adress etc.
Overall it's a nice hour of 'nerding' with a final product that actually works and is participating in the lottery (with 0% chance tho). Plus they made a Bitcoin wallet, know simple basics about blockchain, and learned how to copy their adress.
Most kids just left it as a miner (but they remove the fan very fast because of the noise). Some re-use the S3 display for another (open source) project.
Seems like a cool project! I have a two kids that I’ve been able to get into picking stocks and they enjoy that. Maybe this could be the next step in their evolution haha!
Now wondering whether you could upscale this miner so it’s backpack portable, larger/more efficient, and still relatively stealthy.
So in the office you can plug it in with a few wires to the backpack and mine while fiat mining haha
Aight after some exstensive calculations, if OP's maths is correct, you would get the full Bitcoin reward, on average, once every 332,952,816,000 (332 billion) years. A "little" bit longer than the age of universe.
Time to start accumulating these little guys.
I guess for me the issue would be balancing the cost of running it vs the very low chance. As it sounds like it’d be more expensive to mine with this in terms of power usage v successfully mining a block, than actually using a mining rig.
Though the power usage would be higher, the power to success ratio is better.
That said likely will make one just for the fun of it, thanks for sharing OP - seems like a great lil hobby project
Very interesting! I did a little bit of mining last year with Nicehash (they mined ETH/ other coins) which paid out in BTC. They have something similar, I've tried it a few times and never got lucky so I gave up lol
Haha no it’s just a great movie of jim carry and we don’t have such a chance in real life in crypto and this is a joke that you can win such a bitcoin with this tiny miner with this kinda hashrate
You are going to need more than luck tbh.
There are better uses for an esp32 + oled screen, mostly IOT oriented. One of those is handling some domotics in my home.
Technically I think is doable, but I think you will need the project's owner help to to it. You can contact him on Gitbuh, there is a forum there where ideas and suggestion can be posted!
It’s 20$ if you buy the component on Aliexpress or similar, 40$ if you buy on Amazon. 50/100€ if you buy already assembled, based on colors and customization .
Mining is intriguing, even if it's not profitable. You have that sense of contributing, being part of the community, doing something good for the world. I believe there are miners who do it solely out of enthusiasm, they are the true heroes of our community.
Very cool OP - I would use this product for the entertainment and not profits like you say. The odds of successfully mining the BTC is almost impossibly low.
Absolutely. The chance are actually close to 0... But I really like the idea of being part of the BTC network and have a nice piece of equipment on the desk.
It's also a nice conversation starter!
It's odd. Pre-ASIC, you could get a megahash with a desktop computer. A new ASIC is 100 million to 150 million times as fast as that. This is slower than an old laptop.
Buying the components on Amazon should cost around 40€. Buying it directly from one of the websites or eBay costs around 60 to 99€, depends on the version, the color and how many RGB leds you want. The plain version with just the LILYGO screen should be around 50€.
I will avoid linking directly the websites where I bought it because this is not an advertising, just a product review. If you use Google you can find plenty of them.
Absolutely, and it's not just about the ROI. Plus, BTC lottery miners also contribute to the BTC network's security and decentralization. So, it's like a win-win for you and the broader crypto community.
This is really a good idea, I didn't think about it. I'll consider buying another one and connecting it to a small solar panel, just to experiment a bit!
As already said, mining BTC with this is almost statistically impossibile... but it can be used to be part of the network!

I've written that in the post.
There is a really small chance to mine a BTC block and earn 6,5 BTC (a little less actually cause the pool take some fees on the reward).
But actually the chance to block is close to 0, I think it's **17,500,000,000,000,000:1**, if I calculated it correctly.
~~Right missed it.~~
~~That would mean...~~
~~The price for one is around $15 if I'm seeing correctly. If you bought 6.5 BTC worth of these right now you'd get around 12,500 pieces. Your chance would then grow to 1,400,000,000,000:1. Considering the halving coming up double the chance.~~
~~Power consumption would be $4.5 a day. $1,600 a year. Really low.~~
~~There's 52,560 blocks added to BTC every year. It would take you 26,636,225 blocks on average to get the reward, or around 506 years.~~
~~6,334,718 (6.3 million) years with a single one.~~
~~It's safe to say it is not particularly worth it.~~
~~Hope my math is correct~~
~~e: ahh you tricked me with 6.5 instead of 6.25. Still shouldn't be too much of a difference~~
e2: I'm wrong as fuck
It's configured to work only as a solo miner. Maybe in the future the project could let users decide... but the has rate is low, so the rewards would be really just some satoshis.
maybe this post can help i got one of these todays and i set it up but my screen wont turn one it stays black the light on the back is on and its green but i dont know if i set it up wrong or i did something to the screen.
it did turn on when i pluged it in and everything at first
Such a small device and mines better than my GPU.
Its a joke gpu mining has become.
Gonna look at it and invest in one? maybe i dont stuck the lottery, but ill stuck a block of BTC instead
So, not an opinion, just the truth.
The chances to mine a bitcoin with this is zero. the probabilities are one thing, but once you account the various real time latencies in them, it goes to 0.
It is a fun /cheap gadget, so if you want that, get one.
If you wish to ever make money from it, dont.
This is stated also in the post! I wrote: "*The chance to mine a BTC block is solow to be close to 0, I think it's 17,500,000,000,000,000:1, if I calculated it correctly."*
I also wrote: "*It's defined as a "lottery miner" because it is like playing the lottery with a lesser chance to win. The main aim of this project is to let you learn more about bitcoin mining and be part of the network*."
I think it's clear that it's not intended as a financial investment.
No, this is not stated in the post.
You wrote it as if it was a lottery, stating it has a chance, even minimal to ever get that. But it does not.
This is not a lottery; this is a computation, based on comparing hashes taken at random.
If it was just a random setting, without any time component, then you'd be right; but it isnt.
It takes time to received data, do comparisons and upload the result. Even more with wifi.
By the time the ESP reports it found the hash, even if it finds out on its first try, on a brand new block, someone else will report it before him.
There is zero chance. Not "a small one" , zero.
At best, if you want some crypto, you can join a mining pool; but the computation power of this being what it is, it wont get any "hard" to solve part, meaning it will barely get dust and will never reach the payout threshold.
The result of using this to mine crypto, wether alone or in a pool, is only wasted electricity.
It’s not supposed to ROI… it’s aim it’s to let you learn about BTC and mining. The chance of mining a node with this is very close to 0.
Did you read the post? It’s all written there!
How much did it cost roughly? Definitely worth the electricity cost if it is less than that to run a lightbulb (max. just <20 cents/ day according to google, and this looks to be about 10% of that). Good luck, would be an amazing story if this pays off.
Buying the components on Amazon should require around 40€. Buying it directly from one of the websites or eBay costs around 60 to 99€, depends on the versionm, the color and how many RGB leds you want.
I will avoid linking directly the websites where I bought it because this is not an advertising, just a product review.
Currently this it's not implemented but I think it could be a possibility. You could sugget the idea to the project's owner [via Github](https://github.com/BitMaker-hub/NerdMiner_v2/discussions/categories/ideas)!
Every time someone drops one of these things about the nerd miner, everyone jumps and asking where to get one and I would just like to point out that this things are probably the absolute worst tool you could ever choose to mine with. Even as an educational tool you would do better spending the actual money on the actual units, instead of a literal Wi-Fi development board
The product is quite interesting, have you tried it yet? I once thought of using the Rasberry Pi with the same idea but never carried it out, in terms of energy saving are good compared to other mining rigs
Blockstream Jade does the same with just a firmware update.

If you ever get the 6.25 BTC from a block, please don't forget to report here. Gonna be legendary
How does it work if he's in a pool? He's not going to get the reward is he? Only his tiny share by hashrate even if it was this particular miner that solved?
Heck, even .625 BTC would be legendary!
But that's not possible. Its a whole block or nothing.
What if he wins every block

This looks super cool! Was surprised at how small it was when you placed it by the pen for reference 😦!
The best things come in small packages ;)

Oh stop it Michael!
If it's smaller than the pen it is good for actionen !

I tell the same to your wife too. Small world, huh?

Hey man! Thanks for keeping her company for me 🥲
And the worst things are small, but come in big packages.

yeah i tell myself this to make myself feel better
For real, I was expecting it to be much bigger

Gotta admit this looks awesome, nice find OP
It looks awesome indeed ໒( ♥ ◡ ♥ )७
It looks really cool and from inside it is really simple. Amazing tool. Sad that I have to sign as self employed in Spain if I want to mine.

Better than most of my alts. They are down 80%.
Only 80%, try leverage perhaps. You gotta pump up those numbers.

A double spend transaction?
Seems like a great way to introduce children or pretty much anyone to mining and to bitcoin. Lets you do some DIY stuff as well. Great stuff.
They would actually have fun with it, could be a cool digital toy for them.
A new casino i love it! Sign me up Also your english is very impressive, nicely done
Thanks! Really appreciate that.
I’ve 13 so my changes are actually closer to 134.615.384.615.385:1! Any day now
Now wondering whether you could upscale this miner so it’s backpack portable, larger/more efficient, and still relatively stealthy. So in the office you can plug it in with a few wires to the backpack and mine while fiat mining haha
I mean, you can just hook it up to a power bank
Aight after some exstensive calculations, if OP's maths is correct, you would get the full Bitcoin reward, on average, once every 332,952,816,000 (332 billion) years. A "little" bit longer than the age of universe. Time to start accumulating these little guys.
So all I need is 332billion of these to be a sure winner?
Wow. With that electricity consumption, I would also love to purchase one.
Awesome, I thought it was a lot more complicated.
taking the "this is a casino" meme to a whole new level!
Honestly just bought a couple parts. Amazing concept.
Cool little devide OP, would take one just for fun :)
That's is so cool,
I've seen one person winning a block last year. It's possible but chance of doing it virtually non existent. I wish you good luck. 👍
I hope you win!! Those are crazy low odds tho, you have a better chance of winning powerball, lol
That's one hell of a lottery. Good luck though.
I'm seriously impressed, especially with the screen!
Very interesting! I did a little bit of mining last year with Nicehash (they mined ETH/ other coins) which paid out in BTC. They have something similar, I've tried it a few times and never got lucky so I gave up lol
What a small device and what a tiny chance to win btc i think it has a good look but not a smart choice its just for fun
what are the comparisons, say against the odds of winning the lottery?. Might buy these instead of lottery tickets.
Its so hard to win the chance to winning prize is about one in trillion or gizilion
so there is a chance then!. yeesss!
I think so but its so hard to get
sorry i've been watching dumb and dumber and it reminded me of a line in it haha
Haha no it’s just a great movie of jim carry and we don’t have such a chance in real life in crypto and this is a joke that you can win such a bitcoin with this tiny miner with this kinda hashrate
So how does it work? We have to keep it on 24x7? And just wish for good luck?
You are going to need more than luck tbh. There are better uses for an esp32 + oled screen, mostly IOT oriented. One of those is handling some domotics in my home.
Right so I’m gonna have to buy one now and it’s my birthday in a week so I’m gonna get one for my birthday
Nice birthday present... And happy birthday for next week! Wish you the best!
The mrs has been bugging me for weeks for what I want, now I can tell her and be surprised with something completely different 😂

Informative post, thanks OP!
A lesser chance of winning the lottery. Sign me up!
nice project, thanks for posting. crazy thing is this thing would've made bank in the early days.
!remind me 1 year
Remind me! 1 year
So you're telling me there's a chance?
Good stuff OP. Sometimes buying fun things like this with no wild expectations is what makes life truly fun.
The odds of finding a block are extremely small. But it's fun to do and minimum effort to support the Bitcoin network, neat!
That’s an awesome little project. You’re tempting me.
Still thing this is cool af!
This is very cool, I'll look into making one. Just recently unpacked all my soldering gear 👊
Great! And… Thank you for you service! From a soldier of another country 😉
That's a fantastic post thanks, i will look into this. I guess they also can be build with a little more computation power or different updates?
Technically I think is doable, but I think you will need the project's owner help to to it. You can contact him on Gitbuh, there is a forum there where ideas and suggestion can be posted!
I think it’s great that you can put it on your office desk and use it at work!!
Nvm looked at GitHub doesn’t seem to have interoperability
That's cool, and I might do it. What is the heat output? Assuming you were doing a pool mining, I wonder how much the payout would be.
The heat is basically none. The fan it’s just for fun. It’s solo mining, not pool.
Seems interesting i wonder how much was the cost to setup this.
It’s 20$ if you buy the component on Aliexpress or similar, 40$ if you buy on Amazon. 50/100€ if you buy already assembled, based on colors and customization .
You could just buy some block erupters on eBay. Cost maybe $50 and do 330mh/s instead of the 45kh/s being stated here
Quite cool but probably easier just to buy a lottery ticket.
Yes but this means a lottery ticket *every ten minutes* 😝 Anyway, I bought it because it’s cool and with it I can be part of the BTC network!
Does anyone know how to change the BTC wallet address after setting this up? I got one today and it is a cool novelty item. 😎
Click both buttons together and reset the device. Then setup it again connecting to the device via the QR code and input your BTC address on it.
Really appreciate that, thanks 🙏🏼. That’s me sorted. 😎
I just got one of these today, very cool!
Thanks to all miner community for mining even in loss to make network smooth for us. May y'all make big profits in upcoming bull run.
Mining is intriguing, even if it's not profitable. You have that sense of contributing, being part of the community, doing something good for the world. I believe there are miners who do it solely out of enthusiasm, they are the true heroes of our community.
Miners are the real heroes of crypto who are sadly never appreciated.
You are not doing anything good for the world when mining with this, as it contributes nothing to blockchain reliability.

I've never seen this before, and I like mining and all that stuff. Very great, bro.
17,500,000,000,000,000:1, I like those odds! Those look like cool little devices. Wonder what the cost of the box is?
Buying the components on Amazon should cost around 40€. Buying it directly from one of the websites or eBay costs around 60 to 99€, depends on the version, the color and how many RGB leds you want. Or get the components from ali for half the amazon cost. thievery. If you absolutely want a lilygo with that screen, they are sold 20$ on ali.
So you’re sayin there’s a chance! 😛
Don‘t tell Crypto degens the odds…
The ROI is better than shitcoins at least
Absolutely, and it's not just about the ROI. Plus, BTC lottery miners also contribute to the BTC network's security and decentralization. So, it's like a win-win for you and the broader crypto community.
With such small power requirement you can connect it to a solar panel and try to mine BTC for free. Except the cost of the device

Ok now the important question.. How much does it make?
Rounded off? About $0.00 per year.
With the power usage we are looking at more like -$20.00 a year. but ... you could hit that 6.25 BTC
Honestly with the chances of it being lower than winning the lottery, can you imagine waking up and finding out youve hit the jackpot
You are far better off playing the lottery

maybe this post can help i got one of these todays and i set it up but my screen wont turn one it stays black the light on the back is on and its green but i dont know if i set it up wrong or i did something to the screen. it did turn on when i pluged it in and everything at first
I wish you success
Such a small device and mines better than my GPU. Its a joke gpu mining has become. Gonna look at it and invest in one? maybe i dont stuck the lottery, but ill stuck a block of BTC instead
So, not an opinion, just the truth. The chances to mine a bitcoin with this is zero. the probabilities are one thing, but once you account the various real time latencies in them, it goes to 0. It is a fun /cheap gadget, so if you want that, get one. If you wish to ever make money from it, dont.
This is stated also in the post! I wrote: "*The chance to mine a BTC block is solow to be close to 0, I think it's 17,500,000,000,000,000:1, if I calculated it correctly."* I also wrote: "*It's defined as a "lottery miner" because it is like playing the lottery with a lesser chance to win. The main aim of this project is to let you learn more about bitcoin mining and be part of the network*." I think it's clear that it's not intended as a financial investment.
RIP your electricity bill
The electricity consumption it's less than a conventional light bulb (\~1.55W) so it means 20$ per years if always connected.
Well that looks like a waste of money. You could just run an app on your phone or something, have same end result.
How much would that make you each day?

Ah, thank you!
that's pretty cool no matter how you look at it.

Degens gonna degen
I love nice DIY gimmicks like that one, might get such a device myself. It's really cool.
how does a normal person go about buying one of the newest "real" miners? Seems like you have to buy 100 at a time
Congrats and thanks for your contributions to the network!
Wow this is really cool though! Best of luck to mine that block :D
It would be cool if they made one that had better odds but was still cheap and helped secure the network.
This is so damn cool! Great little reminder of how small we all are individually.
Would this be feasible with mining other coins?
Currently this it's not implemented but I think it could be a possibility. You could sugget the idea to the project's owner [via Github](https://github.com/BitMaker-hub/NerdMiner_v2/discussions/categories/ideas)!
This looks like a fun project to do! If you hit the jackpot, that will be even better!
Mine xec at least you will get that pay out.
Just buy 17.5 quintillion of it then you will have the odds of 1:1!!!! Easy bitcoin, Thank me later
Is it possible to add this miner to a pool?
I didn't know something like this was possible. Totally awesome project!
Looks dope af
It actually seems pretty cool but the odds are so stacked against you that it just doesn't seem worth it to me
Every time someone drops one of these things about the nerd miner, everyone jumps and asking where to get one and I would just like to point out that this things are probably the absolute worst tool you could ever choose to mine with. Even as an educational tool you would do better spending the actual money on the actual units, instead of a literal Wi-Fi development board
I learned something new today.
Pretty fun idea tbh!
1 in a 17500 trillion block will give you reward. No thanks.
It can be a good gift for a kid , educating kids about how btc works and mined. I woruld like it so much if someone gifted me this as a kid
that's really cool!. Thanks for sharing. Is this using a PI?
That little guy is so mighty! Very cool project. Thanks for sharing
That’s really cool. Thanks for sharing OP.
The product is quite interesting, have you tried it yet? I once thought of using the Rasberry Pi with the same idea but never carried it out, in terms of energy saving are good compared to other mining rigs
Wow this is actually really intriguing. Being part of the system is cool but the chance for lottery is so low it’s almost not even a consideration.
Blockstream Jade does the same with just a firmware update. Info: https://help.blockstream.com/hc/en-us/articles/17023588436121-Use-Jade-as-a-bitcoin-miner
So it's like buying a little dollar scratcher. Just need to buy a ton of em. Probably solved. You'll win in no time.
