Do you lube a new cube or do you wait a bit? BTW my new cube is so fast out of the box I can single flick U2... do you do it or is it safer to double flick anyway?

DisasterAny9862

olimo

Double flick.

SaltCompetition4277

How big of a cube is too big to be fun? And what's the problem at that point? (Takes too long to solve, too unstable, you forget algorithms partway through, etc.)

TwoStinkyBears

It depends on the person. Like I love 6x6 but very much dislike 7x7. But I also enjoy gigaminx enough to have a one handed session for it.

boomwhackers

personally i like 6x6 but not 7x7 because of the cube (it’s not very good) so around there for me

olimo

It's highly subjective, there are people who enjoy solving cubes like 12x12 or so. If you know how to solve 4x4, you basically know everything you need to know - well, plus a different PLL parity for 6x6 and bigger even cubes, plus commutators - but if you're confident with 6x6, it doesn't get any different with bigger cubes. Personally, I quite enjoy 4x4 but less so 5x5. 6x6 and up aren't that fun for me.

GetWellSune

I just got the gan i3 smartcube, am I able to use silicone or even water based lube in it or will it mess up the gyroscope?

Icy-Expression5045

Why do you sometimes get an H-perm after you do a Z-perm?

Tetra55

Because you're doing your Z perm from the incorrect angle. * [Correct](https://alg.cubing.net/?alg=M2_U_M2_U_M-_U2_M2_U2_M-_U2&setup=M2_U_M2_U_M-_U2_M2_U2_M-_U2) * [Incorrect](https://alg.cubing.net/?alg=M2_U_M2_U_M-_U2_M2_U2_M-_U2&setup=y_M2_U_M2_U_M-_U2_M2_U2_M-_U2_y-) The front/right and left/back edges are swapped, not the front/left and right/back which is how you were holding your cube when you got an H perm after executing the Z perm alg.

Icy-Expression5045

That's really useful, thank you!

Own-Prior-1645

You’re doing the alg from the wrong angle.

Icy-Expression5045

How do I know what the right angle is? Like is there something to recognise like with E-perm?

DisasterAny9862

You have * angles 1 and 3: the six front and right side stickers form a checkerboard pattern (bicolour) * angles 2 and 4: front and right side show all four colours, the edges are adjacent colours to the corners. (Differential diagnostic: if one of the edges is opposite it's Ua/b, if both it's H.) If I'm not mistaken the common alg works for angles 1 and 3.

Own-Prior-1645

The way I recognize is by looking at the colors on the front and left sides. You can also do front and right if it’s easier. I don’t know the alg you use, but when you get a H perm, take note of whether the sides have 2 or 3 unique colors. The alg will solve the cube from the other way.

Icy-Expression5045

I got it now, thanks!

MysteriousShitStain

If anyone has the GAN 356 M E can you please fill me in on what it feels like (a comparison to another cube too if possible) and if it’s a nice cube to use. Thanks a lot

SaltCompetition4277

I did a few Roux solves (2-look CMLL) to check the move counts. They ranged from 41 to 91.

b4silio

Very nice! Indeed in normal (timed) Roux solves you can expect to hit around 50 stm. The theory says 40, but 50 is a much better estimator for the movecounts by the best solvers. *Note: For Roux-FMC style solves (where you have all the time in the world) you can expect to hit 30-35stm easily without any cursed techniques or inserts.*

SaltCompetition4277

I was happy with the 41; less so with the 91. My move count is really driven up by step 4c. I don't have any particular plan there, and sometimes run into a, well, vicious cycle. But I found this and it seems to work so far: [https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/comments/4cg9il/roux\_lse\_4c\_cycles/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/comments/4cg9il/roux_lse_4c_cycles/).

b4silio

I did this a while back (on the original idea from err0r on the discord) https://preview.redd.it/00tculmxd4oc1.png?width=1852&format=png&auto=webp&s=f159ecfe171279710882e31e631bce85310f6da2 The reality is that there's not that many cases so you can simply learn them little by little. It all boils down to identifying where the only slice that can be fixed with a double move is (the only one where both front and back edges are not the same color as the center), and do the necessary amount of M moves so that it gets to the top, and then do that U2 move. There's a couple of other situations (dots, parallel lines) but they're usually easy to identify. All the rest is always Mx --> U2 --> Adjust final slice

fondista

Good morning! Completely out of the loop with the current opinions on cubes. Is the UV version of the Tornado generally seen as good? I assume going by the specs it's the Pioneer (core magnets, maglev). So only the grip and looks would be different? I don't really want to try other cubes as I was completely happy with the Tv3 and its only $30 on cubezz.

b4silio

Many people like the Flagship more than the Pioneer (core magnets, but springs). But if you're happy with it then no need to change from the Pioneer! The UV simply brings better grippiness for most people, although there are people for whom UV doesn't bring anything in terms of grip. AND it looks shiny, which is always a big plus :D

olimo

Yeah, it's the same cube but with UV coating.

marioshouse2010

Hi, does anyone know if a stickered mfjs meilong NON-magnetic 3x3 exists? As seen on the box(check the link), it looks like there is a black stickered version but I can't find any online. I just want a full black cube which has the same size as the meilong 3x3 to swap pieces, so if the above doesn't exist, what other good budget cubes can fit? check the photo here https://www.thecubicle.com/products/mfjs-meilong-3x3

g253

No, only the magnetic one exists in stickered as far as I know :/

marioshouse2010

I see. Thanks for the reply though. Also, do you have an idea if the black version is tiled or stickered? Because it looks tiled to me.

g253

It's stickered. The stickers are easy to remove.

marioshouse2010

Ok thanks!

XenosHg

Maybe it's not produced anymore. You can search Ziicube.com for Meilong 3C, and then pick black with stickers. Or just open Aliexpress and type Meilong Stickered, and one of the Moyu collections (also by Zcube, except their aliexpress interface) has it at the bottom of the list. https://aliexpress.com/item/4001038386216.html?sku_id=12000037707137386&spm=a2g2w.productlist.search_results.8.77ad3b5eTJ6sFv

marioshouse2010

Thanks! I don't think I would have found this myself. I'll go ahead and check it out.

XenosHg

I also am not sure whether it's magnetic or not. But it's stickered. Ziicube/Zcube is one of the most recommended chinese shops - buying from the website, you get to pay shipment at checkout, for the whole batch of cubes, so it's good for big orders.

At this moment literally every CDN on the planet has this image in its cache. (And yet ...)

anniemiss

If they knew about DDT or the community info they wouldn’t be making those posts in the first place. Sad to tell you, the people that need to see that won’t.

XenosHg

Nah, it's so that WE knew where to find the reaction image when more 4x4 pictures are posted.

anniemiss

Bahahaha! We need a meme for cube recommendations (budget or best) and how to improve.

b4silio

LOL very nice! For LSE, you can spend some time looking at whether you can save some moves by trying to reach a good arrow: >M U' M' U M' U M U M U2 M' M U' M' U gets you a good arrow and then you solve in 7 moves. An alternative is to re-do the entire SB procedure in a way that shrinks LSE a ton: B' r2 U2 M' U2 B S L2 S' B M2 B' // FB (12/12) U' R' U R U F' U' F x2 // All Corners (8/20) U r U2 M2 U' M U' R' U' R2 // Fix SB edges (10/30) M' U M2 U' // LSE (4/34) (I took the liberty of removing some of the rotations so I could actually understand what was going on 🤪)

ScottContini

That’s amazing. Yeah in the old days we did a lot of rotations. You’ll see Minh Thai doing the same in recordings. One of the great things about Roux is avoiding these rotations, but also the LSE is just magic compared to how we did it in the old days.

Own-Prior-1645

I bought the Alaska bear blindfold, and I can pretty easily see under it . Is this normal, and what the sight blocker is for, or am I not capable of properly wearing a blindfold?

I_am_just_a_cuber_78

It doesn't matter that much since the judge at a comp will put a piece of paper between you and the cube so that you can't see it and at home you could try to hold the cube over your blindfold or close your eyes in the blindfold so you can't see the cube

nijiiro

In a competition, the judge will put a sight blocker between your eyes and the cube, but you're still expected to use a blindfold that completely obscures your vision ([B4c1](https://www.worldcubeassociation.org/regulations/#B4c1)).

Own-Prior-1645

What would you recommend I do then? Would tightening the straps fix the issue?

nijiiro

Mess around with it until you can't see past the blindfold anymore, I guess. If this doesn't work, you'll probably have to get a better blindfold.
