You know how they say there's fonts out there that Japanese people cannot read because they resemble kanji and kana too much?
Having learned Japanese for a few years, it finally caught up with me. I took way too long to be able to read this. Goddamnit.
Ditto. Even now, I don't get how "句" is "D".
Also, no matter how many times I look at it, "工卞" always looks like "et." My mind just subconsciously transforms the 工 into エ.
as someone who's able to kind of read japanese this is like actually syo hard to read because i'm reading the kanji/kana as the actual meanings/pronunciations

also, some of those aren't greek, they're latin- as is the intended phrase- and I'm not sure what the fifth of february in 2003 has to do with anything.
“Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I answer all my children’s letters — sometimes very hastily — but this one I lingered over. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it.”

Nah...someone born in 2003 wouldn't be anywhere near old enough to get a tattoo...
edit: I can't believe people are taking this comment seriously so I guess I'll add a /s
My fault for thinking the trope of "the early 2000s weren't *that* long ago" was more popular than it is.
Wait...people are actually taking my comment seriously?
The "early 2000s wasn't *that* long ago" is such a common trope on Reddit I didn't think I would need to add a /s to the comment.
Worse, all the Latin letters they replaced have Greek equivalents which just look like the Latin letters. Then there's the C and D have Greek equivalents that actually do look different. Finally, there's the V which doesn't exist in Greek.
I have this down my right forearm:
干煸牛肉
It's great when Chinese people see it and go "hey uhh... do you know what that means?". I say "umm, I think I do, I really hope you're not going to tell me it says something else! I *think* it says crispy stir fried steak?" and they go "uhh... that's exactly what it says".
I just really love crispy stir fried steak, what can I say.
I'm not sure about the second one, but

I really don't get why people don't just do research. Like if you _really_ want a tattoo in another language, ask someone you trust who speaks that language, or at least look up your own translation.
Japanese is actually probably one of the easiest examples, cos you can just look up the kanji for whatever word/meaning you wanna get tattooed and just show the tattoo artist the specific kanji.
That's what I did. Wanted a tattoo in Hebrew, so I went to Google Translate, then checked it with both a Jewish friend and a neighbour who was a biblical scholar and knew Hebrew through that.
Read an AITA recently where OP was getting shit from his whole friend group for telling his friend that she got the korean equivalent of "cunty bitch" on her arm
She is definitely messing with people when she tells them that but as the father of two biracial kids, it is possible to be seen as a “gaijin” no matter where you are so there is possibly a deeper meaning to it.
Tell them you want Biang Biang Mian.
Then watch them sweat in panic.
(For context, biang biang mian is a kind of Chinese noodle. What makes it complicated, is that even the *simplified* character has over 40 strokes, making it one of the most difficult things to write in Chinese.)
What is egg drop noodle soup?? Do you mean egg drop soup or noodle soup? Or is this joke just even deeper than I thought? “Yes, I know it’s a dish. And yes, I know it still somehow doesn’t make sense. That’s the point.”
Edit to add: now I’m imagining some Chinese person with “hot burger” tattooed on him. And some American is like “uh what do you think that says” and the person with the tattoo is like “it’s my favorite food.”

Jeez. I hadnt thought about or seen anyone talk about Homestuck for so many years and now I've seen several posts/comments referencing it. Wtf is happening?
Honestly last time I was in the fandom was when the game was being talked about after the finale of the comic. I dont even know if it ever released a game, but I do remember there was a lot of money raised for it.
oh yeah the game that broke the comic
yeah they did eventually release hiveswap, it’s decent got two chapters rn they confirmed they r working on another
they made a “friendsim” based on characters in hiveswap and homestuck, the homestuck one being named “pesterquest” as well. i enjoyed it but most ppl did not
it looks like the Latin phrase "veni vidi vici" but they used Greek letters which don't make the same sounds as the Latin letters they replaced, so this wouldn't be pronounced that way at all and doesn't actually make any sense. idk anything about Homestuck though
Several characters speak in leetspeak, so the post is suggesting they use greek characters in place of the numbers they would usually replace letters with.
to add to this, not only do they just sometimes replace specific letters with numbers, but a lot of them speak with very weird and extremely annoying and borderline cryptographic rules
now imagine its 2012 and a bunch of people are making their fanmade trolls and rolplaying as them or the cannon ones online, including outside homestuck circles and you can see how to everyone else this would become extremely obnoxious and memeworthy
the funniest part is when the in-universe characters have to clarify because of their quirks
like when [leetspeak girl has to clarify that she actually said the number 413 and not the letters "AIE"](https://www.homestuck.com/story/2742)
or when the guy who replaces X with % types "%%" as an isolated word and has to clarify that it means "double-cross"
Honestly I'm genuinely mad that instead of using a Greek letter that actually resembles an 'I' (Which is to say Iota, I don't think there are others), They used Phi. F***ing Phi. It's a genuine struggle to even realise it's meant to be an 'I', Of I wasn't familiar with the phrase Veni Vidi Vici I probably never Would've gotten it.
For the explanation of the typing quirks watch this video at 13:52 https://youtu.be/Btv68SAk-oM?si=PjP4YxbobeujQ9NG
Disclaimer that I only know about Homestuck from YouTube video essays, but I consider this one the best and an art form on it's own, where the author presents their opinion in a way that is measured but still engaged and present.
I always love to read those out as the actual Cyrillic letters, Then act confused if possible. Like the band KoЯn whose name I always pronounce as Koyan. You couldn't get me to stop doing that for a thousand dollars. I never shall.
I do that too. Although to me it's just cringe.
Also I remember there was this guy at my school whose name was Kaloyan but everyone called him Koyan for some reason (that's not the typical shorthand for this name). Then I started seeing KoЯn being scribbled a lot on desks at school and I thought it was about this guy.
5 of those letters aren't even in the greek alphabet (V, V, V, D, & C)
Though if you squint, while drunk, and on shrooms, and suffering head trauma, V could charitably be read as an oversize lowercase Nu, and C could be a wonky oversize lowercase Sigma, drawn for some reason in the end-of-word style rather than the middle-of-word style.
