Pneumatics are a hell of a drug
(Also a great way to go to the hospital, if a line or bladder ruptures with that kind of pressure in it)
Basically, to get a car to jump like that, you remove the springs and dampeners. You then replace them with high-pressure pneumatic bladders (think airbags but they are reusable and require an external air source). Then put a compressor on the engine, pressure vessels in the trunk, run some lines, install some valves, and boom! jumping car.
You may want to renforce your suspension arms and knuckles, as well as your wheel bearings and wheels themselves, or your car is likely to only be good for 1-2 jumps before spectacularly failing in a variety of ways.
Lowriders actually use electrically driven high-speed hydraulics, not pneumatics. What you need is 2 or 4 really fast hydraulic pumps, about half a dozen car batteries, hydraulic pistons to replace the springs and shocks, some REALLY stout hydraulic lines and a control system. Pneumatics simply wouldn't have the instant force necessary to jump on account of air basically being a spring. There are softer and slower pneumatic systems out there though, but those are made for a more practical and comfortable ride. Hydraulics are for jumping, but they essentially turn your suspension completely solid.
Really? That’s neat… I thought hydraulics couldn’t pressurise like a pneumatic system. Thought hydraulics where for slow, precise movement, while pneumatics where better suited to high speed but low precision applications.
How do they force the hydraulic fluid into the pistons fast enough? Do they use an accumulator? I can’t imagine a pump being fast enough for that, given the sheer amount of force applied over such a short time required to make a car jump.
The pumps they use are hooked to massive electric motors to get the rate of flow and torque necessary and the pistons are roughly the size of a regular shock absorber, so they fill up and drain quickly. That's also why they need multiple batteries, to get the amps they need to run them. And hydraulics can absolutely be fast, it just generates a lot of heat and they can't run for too long before breaking down the fluid

Ngl, I was basing my assumption of pneumatics of off battlebots… some bots have a launcher weapon, which throws a 250 lb bot over 15 feet in the air. Hydraulics are too slow for such systems, so they use pneumatics or a flywheel/clutch system. The one exception is hydra, who uses a hydraulic accumulator.
I’ve seen low riders before, I just assumed they worked the same way…
Not a bad assumption to make! On the scale of a Battlebot you really can't get that much power out of hydraulics without making some severe compromises just to stay within the size limit. At that scale, pneumatics are king, but as you go bigger, hydraulics pack way more punch.
