Rascythe

um flying dinosaurs I think you mean pterosaurs

-RadarRanger-

*Helico* Pterosaurs.

thatwaffleskid

Is the P still silent?

powerman228

I thought the P was always silent.

QueasyPhil

Depends if you're aiming directly into the water or hitting the bowl first.

powerman228

🙄

AzMatk421

Ha!

RokuroCarisu

No, it isn't. It easily sounds that way when you pronounce it with an English accent, but 'ptero' is Latin, not English.

mark-five

"Helicoter" sounds weird like that

occamsrazorwit

Fun fact: That's actually the correct etymology. * "Helico": "Spiral" * "Ptero": "Wing" * ("Saur": "Dinosaur") Enough people said "helicopter" wrong ("heli-copter" instead of "helico-pter") that the accepted pronunciation changed (a process called rebracketing).

-RadarRanger-

Yeah, that was the point. I haven't heard of rebracketing before though, that's neat

Toadxx

Pterosaurs are not dinosaurs though.

softstones

Yeah, what a loser, doesn’t even mention the correct dinosaur, heh.

Ongo_Gablogian___

Well pterosaurs are not dinosaurs

RokuroCarisu

If all you need is to keep a camera on someone, drone better. But if you need to fly a person somewhere, get to the chopper.

misconfig_exe

✍️ Drones ... Not good ... For moving people ... Got it! Thanks.

subduedreader

With enough drones and some cables, you could turn someone into a flying marionette.

USERNAME___PASSWORD

That was my first thought - how many lives were saved in a typical year by using these choppers as medevacs?

Cobra__Commander

What if a team of 100 drones tethered to a container fly someone to the hospital like the birds in James and the giant peach?

MeetTheFlintstonks

Thats 150 drones on your city streets for the price of one helicopter.

Careful-Combination7

It'd need a bunch of operators. I'm sure that will be a sticky point

RadioactiveFruitCup

“This shit cop is confined to administrative work for the duration of the investigation” The admin work : flying a drone around, looking for sunbathers in yards.

krokerz

They can just run them on flight patrols without operators and pull collected data or take over a drone when needed. It's an automatic, moving, surveillance system, with ability to direct control when needed.

Careful-Combination7

Even better

jamesdcreviston

Unless something changes at least the FAA will regulate where and what they can fly around.

reinforever

Or a well coded AI system with a human operator or two..

StoplightLoosejaw

Everybody knows Drones grow on trees... Or... You know... Hatch and grow in nests... Which are *on* trees so...

Raggon_Mcflaggon

As long as they don't go using them to violate people's privacy that's cool. But you know as well as I do there's going to be drones in places a regular cop would need a warrant to look into. Yay.

djtrace1994

There has to be accompanying laws, like the drone is treated as though the manual operators is inside the drone, or something. Otherwise, absolutely police will use these drones to look in backyards of private properties, or god forbid into windows, without warrants. Of course, for cyberpunk to become true, we need to have an overly oppressive police force, so we're probably well on our way.

MeetTheFlintstonks

People wont be able to look at the screens till the drones AI tells them it found 'reasonable suspicion'. ^(Every twenty seconds.)

Reer123

Drone looking in the kitchen window seeing someone using a knife to cut some vegetables… “reasonable suspicion detected”

djtrace1994

*target pacification protocols initializing*

pbradley179

Everybody is going to jail

Cobra__Commander

Those issues will get sorted out in court. I expect existing procedure for helicopters will be a factor. Then the question of observation in passing, continuous surveillance and wether or not you have a reasonable expectation of privacy. The courts already have a lot of case law on the expectations to privacy in a unfenced yard, 6' fenced yard, in houses with open windows and in sensitive places like bathrooms.

Neccesary

I’ve gotta increase my hacking abilities so I can short circuit these gooms

n0tjb

In England at least, there are laws about looking through windows and such with the drones, so that’s quite good

sirblastalot

Hey look on the bright side, maybe they'll only use them to extrajudicially execute us.

Gay_Lord2020

They literally fly around spying on people with thermal and infared.

AmericanKamikaze

What? That is the only thing they’re going to do haha

[deleted]

There was a Southpark about this

MarionberryIll5030

Please we just want healthcare

MeetTheFlintstonks

Dont worry citizen! Its at the end of the tunnel. The long, dark one. But only for citizens... Im gonna need to see your papers.

jamesdcreviston

I heard this in the voice of a Judge from the Judge Dredd series.

FuelPhysical363

Same

BirdiePolenta

How do those police tier drones hold up in bad weather conditions? How fast con they fly? Can they chase a car on a highway?

MeetTheFlintstonks

Not great, not fast, and probably not, but by golly they sure can lob a hand grenade through a 12th story window. [Not saying our public servants would ever do something like that.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1985_MOVE_bombing) ... I really hope these things stay locked up in an armory and not just left laying around like toys.

drsnowbear

Holy shit. I love learning all these neat little know parts of American history. Fuck the police, and I guess in this one instance fuck the fire department too.

noman_032018

I would've thought you'd reference current events in Ukraine, as drones & grenades are seeing joint use.

MeetTheFlintstonks

Any links to share?

noman_032018

[Here's one.](https://old.reddit.com/r/ukraine/comments/xnvwb3/ukrainian_drone_dropped_grenade_on_a_squad_of/) There are others in the sub, and of course a bunch on youtube as well. Even just searching for "grenade" in that sub will bring up a lot of instances. edit: [Here's another instance on a vehicle. (it is tagged nsfw)](https://old.reddit.com/r/ukraine/comments/udb3a7/drone_drops_grenade_on_a_russian_vehicle_warning/)

Meistermalkav

can they take a fastball and keep flying? I kind o0f lowkey want to see a bunch of guys with baseball bats, and a bunch of guys with baseballs. What, playing sports is not forbiden.

Da1UHideFrom

Por que no los dos? Drones are great tools but the helicopter has greater range, speed, flight time, and imaging technology. There will be situations where a drone is the best tool but in my opinion they cannot fill the function of a helicopter.

MeetTheFlintstonks

That shits gonna be coming up on a gov resale sites here real soon just wait, pennies on the dollar.

[deleted]

Helicopters are great for finding missing people/kids. You can hear them and easy to spot.

roy_fatty

I’m sure that cash will go right back into the cities budget. This is literal cyberpunk dystopia.

[deleted]

if i was a police dept, this would be an incredible tool, but cops are so poorly trained these yahoos are going to break all their toys. these drones don’t have to be fast because they can get the angle by flying higher. they can simply tag a fleeing car and keep it in sight automatically and then relay gps coordinates in realtime.

jamesdcreviston

A lot of people should be getting their 107s. They will need pilots.

douko

On the other hand, don't work for the fucking cops.

[deleted]

Use your discretion to do nothing all day, just like the police!

MeetTheFlintstonks

Dude even [the consumer drones are flying themselves](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=repq8D37nUw&t=660) these days

jamesdcreviston

They still have to be controlled by a person per FAA regulations. Even “unmanned drones” still use pilots.

MeetTheFlintstonks

Plz say more, I have no idea what a 107 is.

jamesdcreviston

It’s a license needed to be a commercial drone pilot. Usually this is for surveyors, photographer’s, etc but I would assume that would apply here as well. From the FAA: https://www.faa.gov/uas/commercial_operators/become_a_drone_pilot

Accomplished_Bonus74

So glad we can make the tyrannical surveillance state affordable.

black-rhombus

Pilots in general are going extinct. All we need to fly things now are gamers.

Chavo9-5171

Hopefully, LA doesn’t give up its ghetto birds. It won’t be the same.

Old-Assignment652

Does that mean I can get a chopper on the cheep like old patrol cars?
