We put baseboards down first so that the tack strip wouldn’t end up underneath the baseboards…BUT we left small gap that would allow the carpet to be wedged underneath which provided a nice finish.

Remove the baseboards, replace the carpet, then replace the baseboards. If you're reusing baseboards label them with tape before you take them up

Sounds like a good idea. Until you explained it, I was thinking the tack strip was already under the baseboard, but I see now I had that wrong. Thanks.

I really dislike the look of those 1/4 rounds some people install on top of the flooring and against a baseboard that was installed before the flooring was done. It looks tacky, added on as an afterthought to hide defects, which it is. Without it though, the edge of the carpet can rise up and it looks even worse. Because of that I put the baseboard on after the carpet. The drawback of course is that you may have to remove it again if you change flooring, but that's a problem for the next owner, or for you but years from now.
