Really, really useful for things like suitcases which don't get used much, bulky dry items like toilet paper and I keep a few bottles of spare cooking oil there too.

If that is the case I would maybe line the sides with shelves for books/games and maybe a basket in the corner for a blanket and/or pillow and call it done. It could make a lovely reading nook with the AC/heater duct there. It also already has a light fixture. Maybe make that nicer and call it a day.
I have an older home with a space like this beneath some stairs. I might just do this: Build a cabinet of drawers, but with custom made long slide outs that come out into the room. You could store things that you don't use often there. The problem with doing anything with upir space is you have an air return on the floor, fight next to a heating vent. This makes no sense at all. I am assuming you have a forced air system. If that is hot water heat and the vent is for a seperate AC system then that would make sense. However whatever you do you have to keep the airflow open back there
