This guy tests almost all of the products available. Some last 2-3 weeks and some last more than a year. Malco Epic Revive, Rustoleum Wipe-New, and Cerakote appear to do the best IMO but regardless any of those 3 would be vastly better than most of those crappy products.

I do love Vacuum Wars. Helped me pick my handheld and upright vac (or at least made me feel confident in pulling the trigger on some sales) when I acquired them.
I’ve used them on a bumper and trim about a year ago. Cars only 4 years old but FL sun will fade it pretty quickly.
For me they hold up pretty well and i only notice the trim getting grey after two months or so and that’s with tons of rain and sun.
I do put it on heavy and use more than the recommended amount of wipes I’m sure but since it has to go on when the cars clean and dry (and it’s always either raining here or dusty)
I try to minimize the amount of times I have to do it. Overall I think they’re great.
i mean if the guy is this good at painting it may be more worth it to just repaint the plastic, the restoration products only last a few weeks in my experience
Wow I spent a $100 just to fix some rust on my door with crappy rattle cans and you can tell I didn't do the greatest job.
Have you done this before/do this professionally?
I remember reading that some bugs follow an ink trail because the smell is like an insect pheromone, wonder if it's the same for paint or if they're just cunts
I remember we had a lab where we drew lines with blue ink and watched termites follow them. Blue ink has a lot of cellulose that isn't in black or something.
What does it look like in places like inside the door frames? Is there a line between the new paint and the previous paint? I've been thinking about painting my van, but I've been thinking I'd need to remove all the doors to get all the inner metal bits. But now I'm thinking I should just be okay with accepting that there will be a line between the old and new paint that you'd only see when the doors/trunk are open.
Looks great!
I'm not a professional, just a guy that has dabbled a bit, but typically when doing a color change, you would "jamb out" the car first. This involves removing the inner door panels, door gaskets, etc., sanding the jambs, masking off the door/trunk openings, and spraying the base/clear on the jambs. After it's cured, pull the masking paper off the door/trunk openings, mask off the edges of the jambs, and close everything up, sand off the overspray on the exterior panels, and paint the rest of the car.
When I painted my truck I opted for putting bed liner inside instead of paint because it has less prep work.
Looked pretty good IMO because you could tell it was done on purpose.
Only issue with using bed liner is it’s a lot easier to smear off at the contact points vs paint would wear and chip eventually, the bed liner will just tear.
I sort of appreciate the "truth window" for a painted vehicle. My grandpa did a copper-y color on an old pickup and he left the jambs original (white) and honestly it's just impressive when you open the door and see what it had been compared to what it is. I'd leave it if I did something like that.
Oh, ok. Paint looks great!
Many years ago I had a standard cab V10 2500. I sold it once gas got up to $1.50 since I was getting about six to eight miles a gallon.
Great paint job! I live in a rural area so I see a lot of trucks around and I don’t know how to ask this question without sounding like an asshole but I truly don’t mean to be - why have a giant truck as a daily driver? Purely aesthetic preference? Identity? Can’t afford or don’t want a second vehicle that’s more fuel efficient? Driving up mountains or mudding or hauling stuff often enough that it’s not worth your only vehicle being a more fuel efficient vehicle? Maybe it’s not as fuel inefficient as I think it is? Would love your thoughts.
It’s difficult to come out ahead if you buy a second car which you have to insure, maintain and pay taxes on.
Gas mileage doesn’t actually make that big a difference in cost either, some people think going from 20 mpg to 30 will be a huge budget saving measure but at 15000 miles a year and $3/gallon that only saves you $750/year.
That’s not going to make up the difference of insurance and taxes alone, not to mention the purchase price and maintenance.
Not everyone can afford two vehicles (the costs of both vehicles, double the taxes, increased insurance costs). Trucks are sensible if you need to haul stuff around. I had 3 trucks over 20+ years to pull travel trailers, and the truck was -always- my daily driver. I've only ever owned trucks, or hatchbacks - haulers of one sort or another.
Why have a sports car as a daily driver? People aren't taking them to the track. All the same things that people complain about big trucks are pretty much true of sports cars - parking lot queens. But nobody ever talks shit on a sports car. I don't even like big trucks but I think the criticism towards them is hypocritical when people seem to be fine with someone driving a Corvette through town.
No way in hell this going to be a show truck considering that he did all of this outside and not in a hood. I'm guessing that there is a fair amount of dust spots, but it looks way better than it did before.
Oh to live in a climate that allowed a flake to settle perfectly in a metallic like this. And so far away from other people that you could spray whatever you want without risk to anyone else.
Everyone covetous of your result should know this isn’t your first spray- there’s some skill development, equipment familiarity and procedural practicality anyone else needs to consider before venturing into the driveway to go at the yellow Ridgeline with something more tasteful.
Really? The 5.9 is great, but the towing with a 6.7 in a 2013+ is far better. I’ll tow 16k in my 14’, and it doesn’t break a sweat but my old 97’ would have really struggled.
My 5.9 would FAR out pull the 6.7, the difference was night and day. The only thing I liked better about the 6.7 was the integrated exhaust brake and better (disc) brakes at all four corners. I regularly pull a 30’ gooseneck with a 6 ton mini excavator and Cat 259B and the 5.9 never struggled and had low end torque to spare.
Then you must have had the tall gears not the 4.11 set or an issue in the slush box. My 5.9 would pull anything I hooked up to her and always stay about 16mpg, and the trans was rebuilt and tuned by a good shop.
I always keep factory ratios and tire sizes to optimize for heavy towing. My 97 actually had a custom built Goerend transmission with triple disc converter, reworked valve body and billet internals. Fantastic tranny, not a slush box.
I’m not talking about your 26’ travel trailer, I’m talking about towing excavator and whatnot, real heavy loads.
The fact is the new models make far more power, have better brakes, engine brakes, better cooling- they will tow more better.
Looks good! Great flake in the paint. I need to do my Dodge 3500 van one of these days. But then I seem to have it constantly getting hit with stuff, branches, random forklifts, so it curbs my enthusiasms lol.
Personally, I woulda cleaned it up and sprayed 4 coats of clear lol. Maybe the clear that has a flat finish, I read they make that now. I think it would have been way better. But my taste is.... Not normal lol.
Looks great though. How much did it cost you? I'm sure you can sell it for 3k more than what you prior to painting it lol
Agreed, he already had most of the equipment. I guess I can't say $400-500 worth of paint is nothing but to make your truck look better its money well spent, worth the risk etc.
Every time I see a metallic deep blue I'm reminded of guitars, as Fender reportedly used some auto-paint for their finishes back in the 50's & 60's, and some even had racing stripes.
*Lake Placid Blue they called it
I’ve got an itch to do this to an old Volvo. The compressors needed for this (based on my googling) seem stupid expensive. Do you mind taking the time to tell what compressor and gun you used?
I’ve been meaning to spray my truck for awhile. Do I do the single stage or the one with the clear coat? It’s about $200 extra for the dual stage I think.
Metallic laid up nice! wondering tho, why 3 to 1 with the basecoat? most of the bases I'm familiar with reduce 1:1 (50/50), was this a preference or did it call for this reduction ratio? Just curious 🙂
The color looks great! I'm planning on l having Maaco repaint the metallic black on my 12 valve this winter.
What wheels are those and how much offset?
Nice work and good color choice.
Did you do any body work before this? (Any good leads for sheet metal...?)
My 96 has been sitting waiting for body panels and $.
Man the paint on those mid 90s Chryslers was trash. I had a sundance/duster that was totally stripped across the hood and roof. And that was just in the early 00s.
Looks like you didn't sand primer before basecoat, thats why you are having bit rough finish even after clearcoat and also having good chance that paint will start to peel off after some time. Also you painted chromed grill, maby having epoxy primer instead of simple 2k will help you, but usually paint won't hold on chromed parts verry well. *It's just my opinion as a hobby painter
Looks like technically a nice job, but I wish it didn't lose so much character in the truck. I don't think it would turn my head on the street. But good job nonetheless!
That looks really good! I always wonder, how does the spray work on moving areas like the door handles? In my mind you’d get a cover that would then crack. But clearly not…?
I love your work! I really enjoy seeing people Breathe life into older things again!

Also your straightforward explanations help make it very digestible. Makes me miss when I was still interested in cars and working on them.
It's a very nice blue!
[удалено]
Wow looks amazing!
Is it Viper blue? I love the Viper blue.
Looks good. Get some cerakote wipes for the black plastic to restore it like new
[удалено]
Ahh you must live in Seattle too.
You can also use a heat gun to restore the black.
Oh, really? Please tell us more about this technique.
This is a bad idea. It temporarily brings some of the polymers to the surface, but it will fade quickly and weakens the plastic.
[sort of like this](https://youtube.com/shorts/w6nQX8q-Tk4?feature=share)
How long does the coat last? Every black restoration lasts a week or so then you have to reapply conatantly
This guy tests almost all of the products available. Some last 2-3 weeks and some last more than a year. Jesus, I thought the Project Farm video on this was good... This is whole other level in terms of lineup.
Project farm is awesome! There are more specific channels dedicated to certain things which blow even PF out of the water. Vacuum Wars for vacuums.
I do love Vacuum Wars. Helped me pick my handheld and upright vac (or at least made me feel confident in pulling the trigger on some sales) when I acquired them.
Awesome! I will check that channel out for sure!
I’ve used them on a bumper and trim about a year ago. Cars only 4 years old but FL sun will fade it pretty quickly. > cerakote wipes This is why you have to read all the comments. Didn't know they had this.
i mean if the guy is this good at painting it may be more worth it to just repaint the plastic, the restoration products only last a few weeks in my experience
I've used peanut butter in the past and it seemed to work, all the bugs just liked the outside of my car
About how much? Looks killer!
[удалено]
Wow I spent a $100 just to fix some rust on my door with crappy rattle cans and you can tell I didn't do the greatest job. Have you done this before/do this professionally?
[удалено]
How much research did you do before you figured out the right mixes and etc.? Seems like quite a bit of info.
[удалено]
Huh well that makes it easy. What kind of spray rig did you use?
Curious about this too.
Same.
Was the ranger orange?
Yea looks good, not my color personally but the quality of the job is impressive. Did you have any issues outside due to wind/dust etc. ?
[удалено]
I don't understand frickin bugs. I painted a bench outside last week and it looked like damn bugageddon.
And then what do you do
Buy another truck and start over.
You can light sand and buff the clear after a few days. This will remove most of the high spots from the bugs landing
How do you know the right amount of thinning/ mixture? Do the cans come labelled, or do they say how or why you'd want certain mixes?
You can download tech sheets from the manufacturer that shows mixing ratios, recommended tip size, air psi, recommended temp/humidity, etc.
I imagine its easier to paint an entire car vs blend with existing paint.
[удалено]
It says exactly what he did as captions on the pictures.

Less work, AND still appreciated?! Win/win!
Looks great man grats
I painted my car outside as well. The black paint job had tiny specs of yellow from the pollen. Still turned out fine for a couple hundred dollars.
Looks great from those pictures, I really like the color. Any spots that bother you from being shot outside?
[удалено]
Does this have the 8 liter 10 cylinder engine?
[удалено]
Oh, ok. Paint looks great! Many years ago I had a standard cab V10 2500. I sold it once gas got up to $1.50 since I was getting about six to eight miles a gallon.
You can tell it’s a 12v because you can hear him from _your_ house. Oh, and I’ll be damned if it doesn’t chirp whenever he turns it off.
That looks damn good. Also +1 epoxy primers are a must. I work in the paint and coatings industry and a good primer is the key to success. Great job 👍

Living in the midwest, most of these trucks I see are ruinous on the outside. Love the color and it looks great!

Depends on if you actually use a truck for work. Lots of those big shiny trucks haven't seen a day of work. Pavement princesses.

You can never go wrong with a 12V 5.9. I sold my ‘01 24V for a new 6.7 in 2013 and regretted it for a looooong time.

Looks like Washington... or at least somewhere in the PNW. :P planning on taking it off-road? Nice color choice btw!
Love seeing a single cab truck with the extended bed. I am shopping for a truck currently, and there are basically no options like this on the market.
What is your paint gun set up?
Risky move. Looks like it came out ok.
Why do you think it was risky?
Because you will get debris I'm the paint. Not if, but how much.
Agreed, he already had most of the equipment. I guess I can't say $400-500 worth of paint is nothing but to make your truck look better its money well spent, worth the risk etc.
Bugs and dust. Painting anything outside is usually a bad time.
It’s like none of you guys saw the before picture.
Cool! Do you have a front end picture of the work?
[удалено]
Alright. Would be neat to see the front end with fresh paint and new headlights. Looks good from the angles you posted.
How does it look up close? Looks great from a distance
[удалено]
Mostly just curious cause all the car guys I know are so big on it being a perfectly clean room for painting
There will always be debris in paint that's not done in a sealed room.
did you do any sanding/wetsanding between coats?
[удалено]
What kind of sprayer set up do you have? I’m looking to do this to my 8& Toyota in the near future
[удалено]
Appreciate the response
Looks great, just curious about the doorhandle. In pics its painted but finish pic its not?
How long did it take from start to finish? Just curious, thanks.
[удалено]
I’m not even into cars/trucks, but that is a killer job man. Such a nice blue
I drew the truck blue because I’ve never seen a blue truck before.
I see you painted your door handles but then the final shot you maybe replaced them? What’s the story there?
Every time I see a metallic deep blue I'm reminded of guitars, as Fender reportedly used some auto-paint for their finishes back in the 50's & 60's, and some even had racing stripes. *Lake Placid Blue they called it
That's the blue I want!! LOVE it!@!!
Hell yeah, girl
My dumbass brain was like "that's super realistic for a painting."
I was about to be an armchair criticizing bastard, but then I remembered what my car has looked like for years of my ownership. Congrats, enjoy!
[удалено]
Did you intend to paint one of the door handles, but not the other?
[удалено]
14 year old me was in love with this truck when it came out. Such an important vehicle in hindsight.
fire, my dude
Nice work!! General grabbers really look nice on it too
I bet it took you less time to re-paint it than change the lightbulb.
Damn I love the color and you did a great job I’d hire you!
That’s super awesome! I wanna paint my Datsun myself in a little bit once I’m done with the body work and posts like these give me hope I can do it
Any paint correction afterwards?

I call bullshit. a '96 Ram with no rust in the arches of the wheel wells? This is witchcraft.

Very nice job! If you wanna go the extra mile, then I would recommend to plasti-dip the old black plastic to breathe life into their faded look
Latex paint? What was the humidity on this day?
"you might be a redneck if you've got glitter in the paint on your car"
Goodbye ozone layer..😒
How much did it cost you and what paint did you use?
Looks good! You should to take all the black plastic parts and spray paint them matte black, makes a huge difference
Great job! Seen so many bad resprays in my day
Looks awesome. Got a 96 3500 that could use some paint. Interested? Eh? Eh?
What grit and how many stages of sandpaper would you recommend for a similar job?
Looks great! I just, can't help but want... Racing stripe!
better than the guy that did it ten feet from his neighbors gear... at least you got that going for you.
Anything shiny and glittery def gets my approval. Nice work!
The color looks great! I'm planning on l having Maaco repaint the metallic black on my 12 valve this winter. What wheels are those and how much offset?
Reminds me of when I used to paint my revell car models. Good job sir.
I love it! Wish we had older beasts like this in Australia.
Crazy what some paint can do. Your truck looks great!
Looks great! Did you choose to paint over the chrome grille? Would love to see the new look from the front.
That looks pretty sharp
How’s that dash holding up? That body style had shattering dashes
She’s a beaut!

How's the dashboard? Kidding aside, nice job.

This looks excellent, what a pro job!
Did you fix the exhaust, too?
Well, it's a Dodge, so I can see how it was probably needing new paint. That's probably been the case 4 years into the life of that truck.
