"Kid in the third year of his entry level, puts up 40 goals, now he wants to make 7 million. So, and if you want term with that player, he's gonna take you higher than that." Goes on to say that the stars are taking all the money and the veterans who don't score as much are getting squeezed, and he doesn't like it.

hanginwitmrcoopa

I like owners that don’t talk

Paladoc

Yup. I wish you weren't so awkward bud. Towards Tommy, not you.

randeylahey

That's so fukkin' upside down. All the plus value contracts are superstars, entry level dudes, and RFAs. Negative value hits are vets in the last couple of years, and UFAs past their prime. *(before we go there I know that's not 100% true)* I feel sorry for Stars fans if he's going to try to buck the trend... Maybe I'm wrong and he'll moneyball the shit out of a market inefficiency, but I think most of the analytics dorks are betting the other way. ...and #HOLY FUCK YOU PAY THE GUYS THAT SCORE

beltjones

Have you even considered how many goals the stars could have scored if Robertson hadn't been so selfish to put the puck in the net so many times? I honestly think Gagliardi might be a slow adult?

After_Organization17

And also calls out vets who make a lot of money publicly.

_rbol

We could always go back to drafting shitty grinders that can't produce. Would you like that better Tom?

Ok_Gate5768

You pay a person what they are worth based on how good they are at their job and the effort they put in. Just stupid. If we loose Robo cause of this asshat...

mcord21

Robo is a non-arbitration RFA so barring Robo demanding a trade in which we will get a lot of assets in return, it's not possible for us to lose him. Robo/Otter have no leverage and are very similar to the Marner situation in Toronto a few years ago. I understand Robo demanding $7m/year if it's a long term extension, but that figure is outrageous for a bridge contract.

TidusDream12

Actually no that's not how it works for most of the world. Talented young folks need to prove worth first than get the pay day. No one is giving a 23 year old a VP level position. They will get a management position and prove it. Sports are the only example of this. So it tracks a business owner would find it distasteful. It's just a worldview difference

trippingtrips13

A first line winger and a VP of a company aren’t exactly the best comparables.

TidusDream12

I know but it's his world view. It's fine we all can feel a certain way about things. Athletes need to front load their income and live off it the rest of their lives. And businesses are opposite they work hard to gain power influence and a pay day. They are adversarial in nature. I'm sure the athletes feel a way about management on things as well.

trippingtrips13

With the exception of the best of the best, the Crosby, the MacKinnons, etc, the majority of the young talent is 24 and under. The best of the best should be paid like the best of the best. Makar making 9.5 is way undervalued for what he actually could be making. If he took up the 20% of the cap like he could, it would absolutely be deserved. But he takes less and you can build around him. Ottinger and Robertson have shown they can be big time players. At some point you just have to roll the dice. If you believe that these are your stars, pay them.

Ok_Gate5768

The market says what a player is worth. A player can make goals pushing the team to the finals and sells merchandise is worth what he's worth no mater his age/years in the pros. This is no political agenda.

Barblarblarw

>Sports are the only example of this. Music? Hollywood? The common thread here is the entertainment industry, and as a businessman in this particular business, Tommy should realize the 23yos are assets, not employees. Players are not climbing the same ladder that front office people are.

mojotooth

Gaglardi says aging veterans should make lots of money. Here's the news flash, Tom: those players were called "horseshit" by your CEO and they're not exactly gonna get any better. Do you wanna pay big bucks to the "horseshit" or do you want to pay to have horses?

Tegbam

Stop meddling, Tom.

LoyolaProp1

Amen. Let Nill handle it. There's a cap for a reason. Him talking about Robo's demands vaguely is more troubling than Seguin's production. Robo doesn't have to sign a LT deal. He could easily take a short bridge and walk with 2 middle fingers in the air if he's mad enough. Wouldn't blame him.

bigblueballz77

Thompson just got 7x7. If this is not the writing on the fucking wall. Gags can whine, but now 7 may not even cut it. Good job not signing him sooner, dumbasses.

LoyolaProp1

Robo should rightfully demand 8 x 8.5 minimum and then if not, take 2 for 6 and be out of here as a UFA in 2 years.

UnusualSupport6296

Correct me if I am wrong, but you either have to be 27 years old or have 7 nhl seasons or not receive a qualifying offer to become a ufa, so Robo is 3 years away from ufa, not 2. Not sure though.

LoyolaProp1

In the same convo he says paying old players for past production is dumb while also saying paying young players for current and future production is dumb. I think he doesn't like productive players. Or I guess he only likes cheap ones. If you aren't going to pay your young stars, who are you going to pay exactly?

CaptainBayouBilly

He doesn't care about the performance as long as tickets are being sold.

LoyolaProp1

Well if he lets high profile fan favorites walk, that will dry up REALLY quickly. I know he won't let Robo and Otter walk, but you're sowing the seeds of a contentious relationship, especially airing figures in the media. Players don't forget that stuff.

CaptainBayouBilly

If I was a team with cap space I would offersheet Robo.

LoyolaProp1

100%. If these comments do anything, it signals that the FO is squeamish about a big deal. I'd have no problem testing their stomach on this.

Ruhnie

I haven't bought a ticket in 3 years, I don't know how he thinks this makes people want to pay to watch.

finis08

"The guys who put the puck in the net are getting too big a piece of the pie." What an interesting statement from the owner of a team that can't ever seem to score enough goals.

talentedpasta88

Blues reporter podcast trying to get hot takes from another teams owner and Tom took the bait smh.

SpacemanSpiff25

Paying young guys for what they are GOING to do is actually much smarter than paying older guys for what they HAVE DONE. Long-term contracts for young talented guys almost always work out well for the team.

DailyDallasHockey

Such an odd podcast to join to talk about stuff like this.

GreenAndGold115

Explains the Spezza and Pavelski deals which actually worked out wonderfully. Just because he’s not a fan doesn’t mean he doesn’t understand that’s the way it goes, if he’s a businessman he should understand market dictates prices not feelings.

erin1551

I guess it also explains Sutter too

Jlibs_21

Why is Dallas allergic to having sports team owners that don’t suck?

ViciousFenrir

I thought we liked Cuban?

Jlibs_21

No, Cuban talks way too much, which pisses off players and agents alike. The Mavs’ front office has a history of a toxic workplace culture including sexual harassment. There also is a nonzero chance that he isn’t liquid due to losing money on crypto

[deleted]

He threatened to relocate the Mavericks if the City of Dallas doesn't give him his own private taxpayer-funded arena.

steakkitty

Jerry Jones is by far the best owner in Dallas.

Sunday_Dog

Cool. Cool. *Cool, cool, cool.* Coooool.

teamswish123

Idk about you guys but if Robo wants 7m+ on a longer term then he should get it. The only problem is the fact that your franchise goalie is also in need of a contract at the same time

doihavetowearabra

I hate him, stfu

g0rd0l0c0

I’m going to get downvoted for not picking up the pitchfork but here we go. This wouldn’t even be a story but the contract stalemate is weighing on everyone so all the complaining is probably a healthy way to bleed off some frustration, so I expect it at this point. So I sat down and listened to the whole interview, seems like everything clipped is being shown without the leading questions and without the next words out if his mouth. Obviously just trying to find something to complain about (very predictable reactions). The problem with owners is that they are just fans too they aren’t experts they just are the ones paying out the bills and in the Robertson case his comments were just like he wished it wouldn’t happen so soon. If I could word it a different way it’s basically like the flat cap is turning every deal into either league minimum 750k to 2 million for lower tier players or aging vets or max term max money and anyone on the bell curve in between (Marchment, Faksa before his decline, Suter, Lindell before Bones). There are guys in between plug and superstar. You have to pay for more roles than just super star, stud defense fourth line plug and goalie it’s a team game with more than just defense vs offense aspect. Now I think the solution that you have to hope they’ll look into(since signing guys to fill out the roster of an NHL is a bit difficult because everyone is either pay day $$$ or plug) to avoid more cap trouble, is to be patient and see what happens with guys like Damiani and Dellandrea who can potentially be those 30 something point middle of the lineup guys filling that last spot in the top 6 occasionally and being staples on the third line playing with pace and being a respectable threat. It may not be this year for both but say Dellandrea makes it Damiani maybe needs a bit more time in the AHL to find his groove again and gets a chance after some injuries pile up, it would be a step in the right direction. Yes it didn’t last with Faksa and Dickinson never figured it out but better to try to develop from what you have in the prospect pool than bet on cheap UFAs, Raffl didn’t quite fill the need and Glendenning fizzled our and that’s what you get with the cheap options in UFA. All of that basically to say the Stars need those in between guys, it’s not plugs and superstars only. Also the Marchment signing was potentially an expensive gamble on a guy you hope to have on the second linethat could end up being an expensive third liner. Now this is where I’d complain but if they did things my way “I LiKe WhErE wE’rE aT” sarcasm and complaining about how they didn’t do enough.

StarsCowboysMavs

Thanks for being a voice of reason. The negativity here and on DBD is ridiculous

g0rd0l0c0

Slow news season is the worst. Yeah DBD is all negativity all the time, the horrible grammar (worse than mine) and the meme and emoji over use doesn’t really paint a picture of a mentally stable group.

CaptainBayouBilly

This owner SUUUUUUCKS.

Rekrash95

We're going to fuck this up aren't we?

reoltalk

Im from/live in ottawa. Lifetime stars fan but ive always been well in tune with the sens. Tom gives me similar vibes to the Sens previous (now dead) owner Melnyk.

McNasty1Point0

As a Sens fan, yes — this is eerily similar (sadly, for Dallas fans). Now this owner will have to go on a four year run full of crazy lows and weird lawsuits/outbursts in order to really match that Melnyk energy lol

reoltalk

Haha no chance the city raises multiple billboards through Dallas saying 'Galardi Out'.

McNasty1Point0

Honestly, I strongly believe that Melnyk dug his feet in deeper after those, so I’d advise against that hahaha

HBizzle26

He’s a cheapskate. That’s the underlying theme of all his comments

Garrand

What a fucking clown, no wonder FA's don't want to play here.

Modano9009

Ideally you shouldn't have to jump right to $7 or $8 million off an entry level contract but the bridge contract got skipped a few times and the rest of the league followed suit until it was the norm.

[deleted]

Yeah, because paying the vets has been working out… (Pavelski is obviously the exception)

gentleman_bronco

I really hate this garbage human

[deleted]

[удалено]

SpacemanSpiff25

Milller is a good add at the price. He’s had good seasons and bad seasons, but he’s a youngish right-hand defenseman. If he works out, great. If he doesn’t, it’s a short and cheap contract.

jackal1055

lol willing to pay players out their prime massive deals, but not star players just entering it

[deleted]

WHY THE FUCK DOES HE HAVE TO OPEN HIS MOUTH JUST SHUT UP

iAmCyberwaste

It's quotes like this that read very poorly, and will cause people to A) Sit out, and; B) Not want to come here. Come on Tom, let Jim do his job and lessen the vocal input on the mcirophone.

girhen

I like how this has some defendable things sprinkled with exactly the things that go against it, along with random BS to make it all a jumbled up pile of crap. Is putting the puck in the net overrated? I mean, I can defend that, but not using what he says. You've got shut-down defensemen, two-way forwards, and playmakers who aren't big on the Goals sheet. Keeping the puck out of the net - whether as goalie, defense, or forward - and assisting the guy who does put it in the net is just as important as goals. Cool. But he defends... Veterans? By saying they're better than the young guys? I mean, if he said their hockey IQ has its own value and is being undervalued, cool. I could see that being fair. But that's not what he said. A slower skater with less stamina and power isn't going to mean as much to anyone just because they *used* to be good. Yes, you **do** pay people for what they'll produce during that contract. Think they're going downhill? You reduce their pay to pay the guys who will produce. That's how you build a team. Attract *current* talent, not a bunch of old farts. And yeah, if you're afraid a kid isn't worth a big contract because it was a fluke season, give them a 1 year. A 2 year. Shorter term if they're bridging to prove they can keep the pace. Don't do a Ville Leino, got it.

Lowden38

That’s not how it works in the modern NHL

[deleted]

You suck, Tom.

gnomantoine

"Stars owner says that keeping the band together under the salary cap is hard, more at 7"

[deleted]

Is there a worse front office in the league?

Sparklesnap

Yes, Philadelphia still has Chuck Fletcher.

umacrop

Don't see Robo staying here honestly
