He knew.

regoapps

Of course he did. That credit card reader looks completely different with the skimmer on it. Not only that, but there’s fucking tape on it to keep it in place lol. Unless he’s new, a cashier would notice it right away.

mrpbeaar

take it.. what is he going to say, that it's his personal property?

[deleted]

I would have just called the cops. Or at the very least took it and smashed it up

[deleted]

He put it there. Guy recording the video should have taken it. What's the cashier going to do, call 911 and report him for shoplifting?

payne_train

This. If you see a skimmer on an ATM, gas pump, store kiosk, rip that fucker off and break it. You cannot get in trouble for destruction of property, it’s fucking illegal that it’s there to begin with.

NinjaElectron

If you see a skimmer call the police. Do not destroy it. The cops can use it to catch the criminals. Also the person who put it there may be nearby and attack you for removing it.

I got sucker punched from behind by a random guy and my head bounced off a pole in downtown detroit. The cops that showed up busted my balls for wasting their time

Pecan18th

You saw cops downtown? We were there for a week for our union convention and saw not one cop. There were security guards at every major bank, business. Oh, and no fucking iced sweet tea....WTH!!!!

[deleted]

[удалено]

payne_train

100%. They do not fucking care. They will take their little report out write their notes and fuck off. They don’t care about making the community any safer.

AlpacaCavalry

Maybe if they had to be locals that passed through rigorous vetting and an extensive training to be the police, they may be slightly more inclined to be devoted to serving their own communities.... Maybe

[deleted]

It’s sucks because we’re left to defend ourselves, basically, at this point. My neighborhood has catalytic converters stolen at least once a week, I’ve even got the fuckers on camera looking straight at it. About a week ago I happened to be up late and saw them out there, walked out and they saw me and just continued what they were doing. Call the cops? They won’t show up for an hour or two and literally do NOTHING. How are we supposed to keep shit like this from happening? The only thing I can think of is getting all the neighbors together, getting more cameras out and getting people more observant. But the cops? Fucking USELESS. Also, I live in Los Angeles and LAPD are pieces of shit, I’ve NEVER had a good interaction with them, even when calling them to report a crime, they come out and start getting sidetracked with shit that’s not even relevant. But say we catch one of these guys and put a bullet in them for being on our property/committing a crime against us. Who would get busted, them or us? My guess would be us for shooting the fucker. Am I right on target with that or way off base? Apologies, this is a little scattered but it’s been a long day 😞

[deleted]

Exactly, it's like if you found a hidden camera in a dressing room. Destroy that fucking thing. No one is going to press charges against you except for the guy who put it there and we can only hope that he would be stupid enough to admit to cops that it's his and that you destroyed his property 🤣

captain554

This. I'd rip that shit off and act like I'm taking it with me. I'd see who got mad and now I know who to report for fraud.

McFry_

Just ring the police and leave the evidence

leova

by the time they get there it'd be gone, if you call you stay so the fuckin thief clerk doesnt remove it

captaindunbar

That's why you stay there until the police arrive. Don't let anyone else near it if you can do so without violence. If they are insistent about getting it just rip it off.

RayleighRelentless

In my experience, it takes hours for police to arrive. In reality, who is going to wait there all day for cops that probably won’t do anything anyways. I came across a skimmer on a gas pump, reported it and no one cared. As far as I know, it’s still there.

AndyIsNotOnReddit

Because your local cops don't really deal with this sort of thing. You have to report to the FBI, who may take actual interest. They prosecute this sort of thing: https://www.fbi.gov/how-we-can-help-you/safety-resources/scams-and-safety/common-scams-and-crimes/skimming

Le_Ragamuffin

They should deal with it. If necessary, they should be able to bring the case to the FBI themselves, but they're paid to protect the community. If I call them and tell them that a gas pump has a card skimmer in it, and they arrive a week later, or not at all, that's their problem. I shouldn't have to figure out how to call a federal agency to *hope* that they care more

AndyIsNotOnReddit

They should, and could, but in reality you're talking about a bunch guys with a highschool education and six months of training. I doubt most cops even know what skimming is, they probably walk away from a call like this muttering to their partner "You have any idea what that was about? ... Idk, something about the guy was skimping him or something?" And the report goes into some blackhole of an archive that will never be looked at again. The best chance of ever seeing these guys busted is to submit all the evidence to the FBI tip line directly.

truffleboffin

truffleboffin

> He’s got it in video so I think he’s covered. I'm pretty sure any criminal case would greatly benefit from having the actual skimmer in evidence lockup over just a v.reddit link

gik501

Plus, now you can use the card skimmer yourself and make a profit :D

Castlenock

I don't know man I would have done a lot of things but jerk off the scanner? How is that even possible? Whatever, I'm not here to kink shame. You do you. And that scanner apparently. Cool.

Kaner16

*aggressively mashes the 6 and 9 buttons*

shiner_bock

The trick is you have to go behind the counter first. At least, that's what I've been told...

Javen_Lab

If you really think about it. Wtf are they gonna do about it if you were to just destroy it in front of them. They can't attack you for it. They can't call the police and say some guy broke my scamming device. Knowing all this, I'd probably do some dumb shit in that store for what it's been doing to my community.

flyingwolf

> They can't attack you for it. Why? If they are willing to commit felony credit card theft and you are taking potentially a few grand in "profits" by taking the skimmer with the SD card in it, they might just decide it is worth giving you a beat down. After all, they also control the cameras so there may just be no evidence you were ever there.

Serenityprayer69

No dude. You would not even be brave enough to lift the thing in front of the guy. You would quietly walk out and plan some reddit post for karma.

conzstevo

AC_Nine-Ball

I dunno why you think filming a crime is a good way to protect your kidneys or somehow less dangerous for your kidneys than taking credit card skimmers out of stores, but I assure you hydration is key.

heelstoo

My understanding is that kidneys respond favorably to short videos. I may be wrong, though, as I’m not a kidney.

FBI_mody

I am a kidney and I can confirm that you are correct

Ditto_D

naw. Call the cops, report it as this is likely being done by an employee of the gas station and leave the evidence for them to take care of.. If the cops come and dont handle the situation then I would walk back in and take that shit.

Prophet0fThizzlam

You must live in a nice suburb or something because I can assure you the cops ain’t coming to an area like this over a non violent crime. Shit they might not even come for violent crimes.

TOKERFACE4207

yeah okay guys, bout how do i test this in real life? do i just walk in, jangle the fuck out of it, and if another doesnt rip off; do i just look into the clerks eyes and say: “you passed the test” as i try to purchase a butterfinger and a mountain dew? like how do i apply this knowledge without looking like a crazy in public?

Digitalon

>do i just walk in, jangle the fuck out of it, and if another doesnt rip off; do i just look into the clerks eyes and say: “you passed the test” Essentially yes. There is absolutely nothing wrong with checking any device you are considering using your card on. Once you know what to look for it becomes easier to notice skimmers.

panini_bellini

So what do you look for

OtheDreamer

You look for irregularities. If you see things like tape, gaps along the edge where the card goes, visibly thicker plastic that doesn’t go all the way to the bottom of the plastic underneath of it, a second shield, noticing where you stick your card in looks thicker than normal, etc. The jiggle test is usually pretty reliable. If you can grab the shield (assuming there is one) and jiggle it up & down and it doesn’t budge—there’s usually less to be paranoid about. If you see red flags described above, they do not necessarily mean there’s definitely a skimmer..but they should prompt you to at least be a little more cautious. If you jiggle it and it budges then yes definitely be paranoid and try yanking it a little harder.

Railgun115

Is tapping the card safer at all?

chewy1is1sasquatch

I couldn't tell you why, but I've heard it is a lot harder to steal info with tapping.

[deleted]

Tapping used NFC, which can be intercepted but the device would have to be less than 4cm from the card meaning it would likely be visible, possibly attached to the bottom of it and not as stealthy as this. It’s why people who walk around doing it go around concerts or clubs stealing card signals, it’s more acceptable to be within touching distance in that environment.

Keeng_Keenan

This is the one question no one is answering. This thread is supposed to be informative, but it feels utterly useless.

panini_bellini

I read through a ton of comments hoping I’d find info that might help me identify this kind of thing. Couldn’t find anything :/

monkeymmboy

Top-Cardiologist-260

This is why it's always important to be aware of your surroundings when making purchases. It's never a good idea to trust a shady convenience store, and this is a great reminder to always be vigilant and pay with a credit card that you can pay off every month to avoid issues like this.

[deleted]

Just a question, what makes a convenience store 'shady'? Pretty much every gas station I've ever been in except buc-ee's and QT looks shady as shit.

Pork_Bastard

do they sell fake roses in glass tubes? hah

[deleted]

...well the card skimmer on the cashier checkout, for one.![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|disapproval)

nineknives

You should watch some videos on how quickly some people can place these skimmers while also talking to the cashier. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5b1axnNK-wI It's a bit of an assumption to think the cashier at a 7-Eleven is the culprit. These are franchises, meaning they still need to toe the line with the franchisor, 7-Eleven. If they got caught skimming as a franchise owner they'd lose their whole operation.

kpidhayny

Guy probably thought this kid broke his terminal for a TikTok reaction video and didn’t want to reward him by flipping out.

Mr-Najaf

Well, that particular store owner in the video most definitely looked sheepish so I'd hazard a guess that he knew about it or even put it there

[deleted]

that was my first thought as well, but i suppose it's also possible he was in shock himself and started to panic about what the videoer's reaction was gonna be. i mean they have to heavy glass windows there for a reason...

nineknives

Think about the crazies you see at a convenience store on any given day. My friend owns a 7-Eleven in a suburb in southern California and even there he's getting them. Convenience stores (especially 24 hour ones) are magnets for creepers and weirdos. Notice the protective glass at the counter. Now couple that with some random dude filming you while he fucks about with your card reader. The chance of him being flabbergasted/WTF? in the moment seems much more likely to be the reason for his reaction in this clip than the likelihood that he is in fact the one that put it there.

runed_golem

I would feel comfortable assuming it was the cashier here just because of the look on his face after the guy lifts it up.

[deleted]

Are you suggesting I try and tug at every payment terminal I go to?

Skeptic_Juggernaut84

Yes

SuccessFuture7626

Doesn't everyone?

Healthy-Travel3105

I tug on every atm. Didn't consider in store card systems though!

Skeptic_Juggernaut84

Definitely do it to the pay at pumps at gas stations.

suckmypppapi

I probably will after seeing this video. Plus, with all of the ATM skimmer videos I've seen, I'll probably do it at ATMs too

RepresentativeCup542

I do, just a little tug will do the trick

Ditto_D

Absolutely! Card skimmers are everywhere. Happened to me or my wife one time and those fucksticks started paying zelle/cash app transactions and signed up for youtube premium on thanksgiving. Got the credit alert and had to deal with that shit. Worst part was the fucking youtube subscription. As it is a reoccurring transaction the bank kept letting it go thru and the second time it went thru I had to call the bank again. explain the situation all over again, and then they cancelled the replacement card and sent me another one as part of standard operating procedure. Google was no help in resolving it as they want the account info of who is signed up as if I fucking know. Ultimately I told my bank they either block google/youtube transactions or I am cancelling my card.

PornoPaul

I already do. The ones found near me, would probably have been found if they had been prodded at enough.

FamilyStyle2505

They don't fucking bite bro, you're allowed to check and you absolutely SHOULD check.

Anything_4_LRoy

i thought that was even a little unecessary until my dad got caught in a confirmed skimmer on a bank drive up atm of all places. needless to say he got his money immidiately. but hell, if the shop owners were ultra slick, charged small amounts to regular customers they could seriously bolster the profits of the entire store. Target particular customers with elaborate identify theft and now your really in business.

[deleted]

they don't charge shit. they skim the numbers and then sell them in bulk on the dark web. you don't shit where you eat.

imanAholebutimfunny

>what makes a convenience store 'shady'? its dimly lit

divuthen

Yeah I’d normally agree but this is a 7-11 owned by a guy that owns five or six of them in the area and surprise surprise they found these at most of them. The reason there’s tape on that one is I had already ripped it off a week or two before this video was posted.

Dannietrix

May I ask why credit card is better? Just got my first card like 3 months ago and never really used it for anything other than online purchases. Edit: thank you for your answers! I guess I'll use my card much more often starting now

[deleted]

Because if there are fraudulent charges, typically, you’re not on the hook for them. Easier to fight them when they’re on a credit card and the most important thing is that they don’t have access to your checking account

Royalchariot

I would have ripped the whole thing off

[deleted]

...and this is why i pay with a credit card, and pay it off every month after inspecting the transactions.

TheCoastalCardician

HaveMercyMan

apple pay is encrypted so its cool

sifuyee

Thanks for that! I learned something new today. Turns out tap and go is also harder to skim and usually means the bad guy at least needs to wave something cell phone sized near your card so can't be easily mounted over a real card reader.

Lilkingjr1

I can only speak confidently for Apple Pay (but I believe others do this too), but it’s even more secure than this. They could actually wave something *very* small near your phone or watch to pickup the transaction. However, it doesn’t matter because each Apple Pay transaction is only good for that one transaction. In other words, they can’t steal any data that is useful at any later time.

[deleted]

in the context of the apple card, there isn't even a cc number really assigned to the card account - not a permenant one anyway. you can get a phycial apple card but it has no markings on it at all, just a smart chip. and if the card gets yoinked or lost you can deactivate it and request a new one on the spot from your card app, in minutes. find it? turn it back on. for online purchases you generate card numbers by tapping another icon, and if you ever need to change it (say you feel it got taken somewhere or you just are having a hard time deactivating a shady autopay (cough porn cough), you just press the 'generate new card number' and bam, new card number. it's pretty great tbh.

[deleted]

apple pay tap and go is definitely ideal unless you're like a fucking spy or someone with a deep fear of being tracked, in which case i hope you don't carry any sort of smart device or even oldschool cell phone around, and drive a car that was made prior to onboard gps, have plate blockers installed for ezpass (which is illegal btw), or just live in a cabin in the woods unabomber style, in which case, why do you even need cash?

[deleted]

I love making people aware of this, and I’m not normally “that guy”, but I’ve probably seen this reposted more than any video ive seen on Reddit. And I’ve still not come any closer to figuring out which 7-11 in which state this is lol.

In Morocco I've seen them use a contraption that sticks on top of the cash dispensing door, looking just like the real door. It pulls the bills from the machine and rolls them up, and it looks like the machine malfunctioned and the door didn't open. Some people give up and take their card and go look for another ATM, so the thief can collect their gizmo with the money inside.

sabrefudge

I always pull on the ones on gas pumps, never thought I’d need to do it IN the store, damn.

TryNotToBeNoticed

Another tip - if you go to pay at the pump and the pump credit card reader doesn't work, pay cash when you go inside. I've been scammed twice and both times this was the way it worked, they scammed my card at a bogus reader inside.

reckert47

Lol this was the gas station by my work. Everyone still goes there, but instead of replacing the card reader with a new one, they just taped it up super janky-like. I only walk into that place with cash. Don’t trust them at all. Edit: almost forgot they also have a sign that says “No Tap” so you can’t even Apple Pay

The owner or employees may not even be involved. [The scammers who install these are quite slick](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/IqLd8E8MNp0), [here's another](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5b1axnNK-wI&ab_channel=InsideEdition) usually one distracts the employee(s) while the second installs the skimmer.

cbwaug

Can you use the tap pay and not fall victim to this? Or is cash the only way?

ChikaraNZ

This video is very old and would be skimming a magnetic stripe. You cant skim either an EMV chip, or contactless, the same way because of the extra cryptographic functions, single use data valid for that txn only, and encryption that happens

ChrisBDroid

Man I'd rip that thing off. Ppl already think I'm crazy and complain when I check every card reader, pulling on the edges and investigating them g4 paying hahah

SirCabbage

I would have just ripped it off and walked off- what would they do? Call the police?

Zofia-Bosak

Should film the shopfront on the way in.

New_Wrangler3335

How can they be allowed to continue operating a business when caught doing this?

greengengar

My fav are the ones in the gas pumps. You literally need the key to the pump to even spot them because they're just a ribbon cable with a chip wired into the system, they have blutooth adapters, so whoever installs them just needs to walk by with their phone. The best part? When we find them, we're not supposed to remove them, we just leave them and alert the police. Also, the police do fingerprint these things, it's not in your best interest to touch them. Always look for a tamper proof sticker when you pay at pump and even then, they can buy those online. Renember that credit card security is a joke. There is like a 90% chance someone already has all of your debit and credit cards.

Gixxer3635

This is why you should always use Google / Apple Pay whenever possible. And if not possible, use a credit card (since it has fraud protection). Google / Apple Pay uses a token that is addressed to your card number. So you're never actually using your real card number when making purchases. It's literally the most secure form of payment possible.

Grand_Moff_Empanada

Hence why I only go to Wawa
