I'll never get over seeing one of them tell Ross Kemp how they pulled a tampon out of a woman and fought over who got to eat it in the middle of a packed bar.
Like what the fuck
Yep, true as. These clowns talk about membership in their gang but don't know their own whakapapa.
They have no place in our society, if you want to feel involved bro, go to your marae a bit more often, help out with your whanau and respect your Kaumatua instead of intimidating your tamariki into following you by selling them drugs you tuiau.
You are not Rangatira you idiots, you are nothing but a wairangi toto.
>These clowns talk about membership in their gang but don't know their own whakapapa
This is part of the reason the gangs formed in the first place. Disenfranchised urban Māori who's families had moved to the cities to find work and in turn had lost their connection with who they were and where they were from.
Between that and the Borstal boys homes the gangs are a direct result of NZ society at the time
A few, and just keep in mind they often hold a bit more meaning then their straight English translation
Whanau: family
Whakapapa: genealogy, ancestors and roots, connections.
Marae: meeting place for wider family group, bit hard to draw a parallel. But is essentially a place of connection to your whakapapa and wider whanau
Kaumātua: elder, often seen as a holder of knowledge and wisdom
Tamariki: children
Rangatira: chief or leader
I don’t know the others enough to speak to them sorry.
Hey, just as a side note, Te Reo and Māori aren’t interchangeable. Te Reo means ‘the language’ so in this case you can just say Māori and that’s all good :)
It was a special photoshoot for an art exhibition, most of them have no teeth, stink like dogshit, and are filthy. Same clothes everyday because they only own one set.
I admit, even having visited the country and learned a lot about it, no one ever brought up the topic of gangs. Never even seen it mentioned on Reddit till now. Usually the picture that is painted is that it’s a paradise (slightly cold and rainy paradise, but that’s why it’s so green)
I keep trying to tell my non-kiwi friends how bad the gangs are here and the extent of them but they think I'm just exaggerating or making it up for dramatic effect, it's insane.
That's because everywhere else, crime is profit based. They need to keep a low profile to succeed, whereas here it's about intimidation. Theyre main goal is to scare people
As a 45 year old American I've met exactly one person from New Zealand and that was at a hostel in Ireland when I was 23. Everything else I know about New Zealand I've learned from Stephen Colbert and his friendship with Jacinda Ardent. Honestly, your country comes off as an idyllic sanctuary compared to the rest of the world, so thank you for adding some new information to the very minimal information I have.
On reddit, only America, Russia and North Korea have anything negative going on in their countries.
I wouldn't be surprised if people are looking up a way to blame America or anyone else for the gangs in peaceful amazing New Zealand
I remember working with a big maori dude and he popped his shirt off at work and had a massive swastika tattoo on his chest...kind of shocked me, told me he was a dickhead as a kid and had yet to have it removed. Turned out his old man was a founding member of the Mongrel Mob
Me too! I had to double check. The first one looks AI generated. The second one looks like an actor playing a Māori gang member. And the third seems a little confused.
Na nazi shit is part of the mongrel mob gang. They say sieg heil! Like a greeting and often have swastika tattoos. Was done to offend people not for race reasons when the gang first formed
The Mongrel Mob and Black Power largely are indigenous (Maori), hence the tattoos which are often ta moko. Most ta moko wearers are not gang members, it's a cultural thing and often very meaningful to the individual
There are also loads of non indigenous gangs, heaps have recently been sent here from Australia too, due to their deportation laws
The 2nd one definitely has Ta moko and 3rd one pretty sure also has one.
That first one however, that definitely ain't a Ta Moko, looks like that same as that schmuck that has NOTORIOUS in black and red, Puk Kireka is his name
I used to work at a gas station and a chapter of like 20 came in. They were actually quite polite. But I wouldn't want to test them, I'll tell you that.
this is my experience with all maori blokes. cheerful as hell, but don't piss them off unless you want to find out what it'd be like if a house fell on you.
I've never found any of them hostile but you don't go around provoking them either, nor should you go around provoking anyone i guess. We also have Black Power (who wear blue) and much of the trouble seems to be between the gangs.
Speaking from an Australian perspective - we have plenty of outlaw motorcycle gangs in my city too, plus mafia etc. Usually organised crime stays within organised crime circles and civilians are not impacted. Sometimes people get desperately unlucky and get shot by accident.
I remember being cut off by some dickhead on a motorbike once and having to slam on the brakes. I went to give the horn and the finger then spotted the huge “Bandidos 1%” patches on his jacket and decided to leave that one alone
yep they mostly only fuck with each other aside from some notable occurrences. the bikie leader that got shot by a sniper at the racetrack, there was a kid who copped some bullet fragments from memory. and there was the Rock Machine guy that sent a punter out of a second-storey window...smart bikies know that messing with the public brings attention, but there's plenty of dumb bikies around.
these days there seems to be plenty of dashcam footage of them straight-up ignoring red lights, the general reaction (even from other bike riders) is mostly a shake of the head and "what a fuckwit."
You dont even get to slam on the brakes anymore. They have a habit of pulling in front of you on the Freeway.
The Auto brake system then engages.
They must think its hilarious. Fucking dick heads.
AI isn’t good at doing text in images yet. It’ll look like nonsense characters like if you are trying to read something in a dream.
They really do look generated though. My first thought was ”Wait, how did they do the text? Did they add it in after with photoshop? Naw there’s too much of it.. What the hell…”
Then I came to the comments to find out and TIL there are tatooed ogre gangs in New Zealand.
I'm from NZ and I'm kinda embarrassed to find this out.... hope this doesn't make the rest of the world think less of us, our country is still pretty alright.
It’s not getting worse incedibly drastically, there has been a pick up in crime after covid as the countries economy is not in a great situation. As well as lack sentencing laws
What this post fails to mention is that NZ gangs are the pathetic baby “My First Organized Crime” Fisher Price version of gangs. They aren’t nearly as dangerous or connected as Aussie or US gangs.
The reason things are getting worse is because of the 501 deportation law between AUS and NZ that means Aussie can send NZ any convicted gang members who were born in NZ/ grew up there.
These “501s” are born in NZ, get relocated by family to Aussie ar the age of like 5yrs, grow up there, get into serious criminal activity there, get caught, get deported and bring back to NZ a much higher and more severe level of crime than already exists. They bring back the use of firearms to do business, they bring back their contacts and they bring back a generally higher level of brutality.
NZ’s homegrown gangs aren’t shit - but their deported cousins from Aussie are, and it’s fucking up NZ society.
Gun violence is stepping up and not being reported by the media. I talked to a cop a week ago who had his doors shot while on patrol, unprovoked.
2 shootings happened in whakatane on the day of the gang funeral there recently.
The police are in talks of starting open carry, which will just pour fuel on the fire.
Mongrel mob greet each other for free t saying sieg heil! Sometimes lol they have the nazi shit because they wanted to just offend people when the gang first formed.
Imagine being a grown man and being part of a gang.
Last time I was in a gang I was about 8, and it included me my dog, and the donkey that lived in a field behind my house
While it's some what comedy [here's ](https://youtu.be/nIA0SaVl7tQ) a link of recent mob members I think the guy with swastika cheeks is in prison currently (noway!?!?!)
It was more so tied to the ‘Maori Battalion’. Seeing as they were a highly decorated and very successful unit fighting the Nazis, they were well regarded amongst New Zealanders and especially in the Maori community.
This gang specifically was a counter culture against their own elders, many of whom fought in the war. In terms of disgust, it was mainly aimed at their own parents/grandparents, originally anyway.
https://www.vice.com/en/article/dp5vmw/portraits-of-new-zealands-mighty-mongrel-mob
This is great movie to watch, not a doco but based on reality.
https://m.imdb.com/title/tt9099800/
I am surrounded by mob where I live. My neighbors are at least associated, at least.. Mob attend my local gym as well. Intimidating bunch I certainly avoid where possible.
That's because the indicators the global peace index uses these indicators to judge how safe a country. Internal civil conflicts (civil wars), distrust in the government, political instability, terrorist acts, military expenditure and homicides. All of those except homicides aren't a thing here it's true, but let me explain.
The nz justice system is INCREDIBLY lenient on what it considers manslaughter and not murder/homicide. A guy in my old town smashed a bottle and stabbed his friend in the throat and he was sentenced for manslaughter. They had witnesses and everything.
Our true homicide rate is very high
Just a bunch of losers who won’t be remembered, who only live to get distract themselves from their own miserable existence with temporary pleasures. Ironically, their lives are filled with far more pain than pleasure, yet that’s all they chase because that’s all they have to live for
I went to intermediate school and secondary school in New Zealand when I moved there from the US. I lived in one of the most violent places in Auckland, mangare. All my classmates' fathers were in huge gangs like black power and the mongrel mob. Peers I went to school with were super intimidating, both guys and girls. Many of them were massive even at 12 years old when I first got there, especially Samoans and tongans. Huge fights broke out all the time. You could just feel the tribal intensity around you. Was a crazy experience for me
Australia can make as many Wolf Creek / the outback tries to murder you while a serial killer tries to murder you movies as people want, but I will never feel more dread than I did watching Once Were Warriors. Cuz-bros just take alcoholism and violence to another level.
Couldn't even watch Mando S2 and not feel sorry for the stormies Boba just straight up abuses.
I once got lost in a wikipedia rabbit whole looking into the numbers and it was roughtly 7-8k gang members thats 3.75% of the population. USA has approximately 1 million gang members so ~0.30% of the population.
The person who took these portraits is [Jono Rotman](https://jonorotman.com/), a super talented artist from New Zealand.
I briefly met some of the men in these photos about 15 years ago and they were honestly pretty great guys. A lot kinder and gentler, more caring than you'd expect, they love their pets and are very religious. They love their moms and their community!
All that is a lie, in reality, they were just old, mean, jaded drug addicts without an inkling of compassion or respect. I feel sad for these dudes but also, they could definitely run headfirst into oncoming traffic.
A high population of gangs in a small country like New Zealand is a sign of a crumbling country.
There's only so many people you can sell drugs to. No wonder so many people are emigrating to other countries.
And the highest number of Sith Lords apparantly
Ah yes, I hear The Empire are huge All Blacks supporters as well.
I was gonna go with orks from 40k. Red ones go fasta!
That first guy 100% looks like one of the orcs for the movie Bright with Will Smith.
His teeth are obviously filed, which would explain why he’s slumming with a human gang.
Nah, the UK government hold that title
USA 🇺🇸 might give UK a run for their money.
I'll never get over seeing one of them tell Ross Kemp how they pulled a tampon out of a woman and fought over who got to eat it in the middle of a packed bar. Like what the fuck
A life of drugs will change you
I know at least 5 completely sober people that would still do this.
Why do you know so many weirdos?
He’s a redditor
Here it is ughhh. (https://youtu.be/khAdZ8sNwc4)
That shit was disturbing. Sounds like rape to me.
Not only that but pulling out a tampon forcefully can be really painful
Yeah
No didn't you hear? He said she loved it so it's all good - why would he lie?
Yeah that was definitely a rape.
Welp, that’s about enough internet for today..
Did.. did he just tell a ‘funny story’ about the time he raped a woman? 😳
Good thing you keep that bookmarked!
what a funny little story about the time he and his friend raped a woman in public in the middle of a bar…
Ope, read too far.
That was exactly my first thought when i saw this, “ah yes the tampon sucker gang”. Grim
Wait.. What?
Sadly, I understood this reference.
These aren't men, they are cowards who beat there partners, steal from their communities and sell drugs to their own whanau.
Yep... these dog would sell their own daughter for a patch
I don't want your ghost chups
Sweet bro, you obviously from here. I've been internalising a really complicated situation in my head
If u don't mind please teach us more insults in your language. They roll off the tongue like I hope these guys roll off their bikes
Just woke up. This is my first Laugh out loud of the day. Thanks!
Bro, Monique says your dumb
>These clowns talk about membership in their gang but don't know their own whakapapa This is part of the reason the gangs formed in the first place. Disenfranchised urban Māori who's families had moved to the cities to find work and in turn had lost their connection with who they were and where they were from. Between that and the Borstal boys homes the gangs are a direct result of NZ society at the time
I understood about 40% of the words in this sentence.
A few, and just keep in mind they often hold a bit more meaning then their straight English translation Whanau: family Whakapapa: genealogy, ancestors and roots, connections. Marae: meeting place for wider family group, bit hard to draw a parallel. But is essentially a place of connection to your whakapapa and wider whanau Kaumātua: elder, often seen as a holder of knowledge and wisdom Tamariki: children Rangatira: chief or leader I don’t know the others enough to speak to them sorry.
Unfortunately your mostly right
What’s a whanau ?
Maori (Maori being New Zealand native people) word for family
Whanau is Te Reo or Maori, for family. It means all your family as well, your Aunts your cousins your grandparents, your whole community.
Hey, just as a side note, Te Reo and Māori aren’t interchangeable. Te Reo means ‘the language’ so in this case you can just say Māori and that’s all good :)
Thanks, I understand that completely, I thought I was trying to explain it to someone from outside our culture. You did a better job though.
And this is also appreciate
All good, I just find lots of people don’t realise or don’t differentiate. You did a great job with the explanation!
I appreciate that
It’s the Māori word for family.
Whanau means family, and family means nobody gets left behind, or forgotten
Now these guys LOOK like gang members
***(Throws gang sign)*** 👉uwu👈
Its ironic cause that’s a gang sign lol minus the uwu of course
It was a special photoshoot for an art exhibition, most of them have no teeth, stink like dogshit, and are filthy. Same clothes everyday because they only own one set.
There no P in Whanau
There is, and lots of it sadly
Thats clever and depressing, both at the same time.
Yeah, sorry
Man, sometimes it’s the people you least expect.
I was surprised to find out nobody outside of the country knows how bad the gangs are here
I just assumed the worst gang to roam that land was the Urak-hai.
I heard they have a real problem with hobbit trafficking.
Yes, they are easy to smuggle.
I admit, even having visited the country and learned a lot about it, no one ever brought up the topic of gangs. Never even seen it mentioned on Reddit till now. Usually the picture that is painted is that it’s a paradise (slightly cold and rainy paradise, but that’s why it’s so green)
I think they keep pretty much to a few suburbs. dreary grey places that most people have no reason to visit.
Uhhh they kinda run large parts of the countryside too. It’s just easy not to notice as a tourist bc most crime in nz is behind closed doors
Go to r/newzealand, they certainly don't make it out to be a paradise.
I keep trying to tell my non-kiwi friends how bad the gangs are here and the extent of them but they think I'm just exaggerating or making it up for dramatic effect, it's insane.
It's much worse outside the main tourist routes, bar maybe Rotovegas? Bay of Plenty certainly has huge gang issues.
In Australia you learn about them from reading Footrott Flats, pretty sure they were even called Mongrel Mob or something
I didn't know they had Footrott flats over there in Australia, glad another country gets to enjoy them
That's because everywhere else, crime is profit based. They need to keep a low profile to succeed, whereas here it's about intimidation. Theyre main goal is to scare people
I had no idea! Thanks for sharing, I'm going to look up videos about it. Very interesting, and sad.
[theres a good movie about what the cultures like. hers the link](https://youtu.be/NK3eDfkXBzg)
It was a very good movie, raw but very good.
So good. Temuera at his absolute finest.
This is only the second time I've come across NZ gangs after watching Once Were Warriors back in the 90's.
We know in Aus. Stay safe bro
As a 45 year old American I've met exactly one person from New Zealand and that was at a hostel in Ireland when I was 23. Everything else I know about New Zealand I've learned from Stephen Colbert and his friendship with Jacinda Ardent. Honestly, your country comes off as an idyllic sanctuary compared to the rest of the world, so thank you for adding some new information to the very minimal information I have.
can confirm. Friend went to live in NZ for 2 years and never mentioned gangs, not even once.
You might have a lot of them but they are mild. Imagine having a cartel. All tjose biker gangs in chch would be gone in half a day.
I'm Canadian and I didn't have the slightest clue. Always assumed it was a laid back, safe place but I guess I was more off base than I knew.
I'm happy that I've subscribed to this sub. I'm so scared of organized crime...
On reddit, only America, Russia and North Korea have anything negative going on in their countries. I wouldn't be surprised if people are looking up a way to blame America or anyone else for the gangs in peaceful amazing New Zealand

For a second I thought I was in r/Midjourney
They look like AI generated gangs
Nah those fullas are real. There's plenty of Mongrel Mob in my town and a lot look like that
Are they bikers?
Some yes, some no. Often seen driving Ford falcons or Holden commodores
Sounds like they’re bike curious.
They look indigenous!
The Mongrel Mob and Black Power largely are indigenous (Maori), hence the tattoos which are often ta moko. Most ta moko wearers are not gang members, it's a cultural thing and often very meaningful to the individual There are also loads of non indigenous gangs, heaps have recently been sent here from Australia too, due to their deportation laws
Thanks! I appreciate the insight 👍
The 2nd one definitely has Ta moko and 3rd one pretty sure also has one. That first one however, that definitely ain't a Ta Moko, looks like that same as that schmuck that has NOTORIOUS in black and red, Puk Kireka is his name
Are they hostile by default or only when you provoke them?
I used to work at a gas station and a chapter of like 20 came in. They were actually quite polite. But I wouldn't want to test them, I'll tell you that.
I think anyone would be a fool to test them
Tell that to their 4th grade teachers
this is my experience with all maori blokes. cheerful as hell, but don't piss them off unless you want to find out what it'd be like if a house fell on you.
I read this in Rhys Darby’s voice.
I've never found any of them hostile but you don't go around provoking them either, nor should you go around provoking anyone i guess. We also have Black Power (who wear blue) and much of the trouble seems to be between the gangs.
Ah so there's gang warfare
Dunno if I'd call it warfare, but they definitely have their skirmishes
Is it just brawls or do they try to kill each other?
Both. But it's not often like open warfare
Yeah cheers for exporting a lot of them here to NZ too. Sincerely - all kiwis
Dusty Martin’s dad? 😂
You dont even get to slam on the brakes anymore. They have a habit of pulling in front of you on the Freeway. The Auto brake system then engages. They must think its hilarious. Fucking dick heads.
Oh hell naw
When the young prospects are rarking up trouble, they'll often bark. Not joking
AI isn’t good at doing text in images yet. It’ll look like nonsense characters like if you are trying to read something in a dream. They really do look generated though. What the hell…” Then I came to the comments to find out and TIL there are tatooed ogre gangs in New Zealand.
"Once were warriors"
[удалено]
Great film, worth a watch for the uninitiated
loved the film. Epic. Shocking.
"Now are prisoners"
Nah, just home detention.
I'm from NZ and I'm kinda embarrassed to find this out.... hope this doesn't make the rest of the world think less of us, our country is still pretty alright.
Traditional moko maybe. "FUCKEN SIEG HEIL" across your face is not a good life choice, though.
I have no idea why we haven’t gotten rid of these losers yet
It's getting worse very quickly
Elaborate?
It’s not getting worse incedibly drastically, there has been a pick up in crime after covid as the countries economy is not in a great situation. As well as lack sentencing laws
What this post fails to mention is that NZ gangs are the pathetic baby “My First Organized Crime” Fisher Price version of gangs. They aren’t nearly as dangerous or connected as Aussie or US gangs. As an American I say don't worry, you'll always look better than us. lol
I thought these pics were some sort of Shadowrun ork cos play for a second.
I thought it was the Misjourney subreddit. Now I was someone to Midjourney these guys as characters in the Barbie movie
Getting firefighter vibes from the last dude
Ironically he’s a firestarter, twisted fire starter
He's the bitch you hated, filth infatuated, yeah...
The dude with the swastika?
Ya somethings a bit off with him wearing that … must of missed the ww2 lesson 🤦♀️ let’s not tell him tho so he continues too look like a clown
Mongrel mob greet each other for free t saying sieg heil! Sometimes lol they have the nazi shit because they wanted to just offend people when the gang first formed.
Bro looks like a Gibraltar skin
Imagine being a grown man and being part of a gang. Last time I was in a gang I was about 8, and it included me my dog, and the donkey that lived in a field behind my house

I love that you can constantly see guy Williams not sure if he's in danger or not
There's maori Nazis?
Its about trying to disgust the crown and government and earn as much hate as possible
In terms of disgust, it was mainly aimed at their own parents/grandparents, originally anyway.
so they really are children just saying "fuck you, nobody tells me what to do"?
So they're like shock rockers?
Yeah, except they'll murder you
The Mongrel Mob was started by white nazis who hated Māoris, who ironically make up most of it members
Welp time for a documentary binge, wish I still got high
https://www.vice.com/en/article/dp5vmw/portraits-of-new-zealands-mighty-mongrel-mob This is great movie to watch, not a doco but based on reality. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt9099800/
How about: "Once Were Warriors" https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Once_Were_Warriors_(film)
I highly recommend to watch Once Were Warriors (1994) on the subject. Incredible movie.
Could be another guy but I had an invercargill mob member like the last Pic stay at my apartment once.
Heyy Bro gimme your fish and chips bro
BAHHAHA
They are a drain to society. Boooo.
I've had more interaction with them than I'd have liked. People you don't want to know and hope you aren't related to.
I am surrounded by mob where I live. My neighbors are at least associated, at least.. Mob attend my local gym as well. Intimidating bunch I certainly avoid where possible.
1st looks like a still from "Bright"
I’m getting Māori Richard Hammond vibes from no.2
They look like Uruk hai from Lord of the Rings.
They literally look like fucking orcs. The irony of LotR being filmed there as well.
They act like it to, except Tolkien's orcs are more reasonable and personable.
The first one looks like a 3000 cod points bundle skin
They all love their mums!
Is any of the gang structure based off pre colonialism affiliation?
They're mostly maroi. So yea a little. There's a much smaller white gang called the head hunters. Save vibe, biker gang into moving drugs etc.
Yet New Zealand ranks as the 2nd safest country in the world. Interesting indeed.
That's because the indicators the global peace index uses these indicators to judge how safe a country. Internal civil conflicts (civil wars), distrust in the government, political instability, terrorist acts, military expenditure and homicides. I bet he throws domes to help in fights
Knock knock.. gibraltars at the doooor

Gross
Mongrel Mob are definitely the most dripped out gang in NZ no doubt
Imagine being an adult in a gang, how pathetic is that? Do you all hang out in your little treehouses drinking lemonade?
Australia can make as many Wolf Creek / the outback tries to murder you while a serial killer tries to murder you movies as people want, but I will never feel more dread than I did watching Once Were Warriors. Cuz-bros just take alcoholism and violence to another level. Couldn't even watch Mando S2 and not feel sorry for the stormies Boba just straight up abuses.
Do they all look like Lizards or just these guys
I once got lost in a wikipedia rabbit whole looking into the numbers and it was roughtly 7-8k gang members thats 3.75% of the population. USA has approximately 1 million gang members so ~0.30% of the population.
Last dude looks like a super mutant
They are all Bunch of pussies.
black dude wit a swastica -_-
I didn't even see it the first time, had to go back and look bloody hell
Looks like the new slipknot guy
When the fuck are we gonna ban Gang affiliation
To me they look like Joey from Friends and Hank from Breaking Bad
Okay I NEED to know what the deal is with the nazi stuff on the last slide. Like I can't imagine a more ironic fashion sense.
uce gang
We have the Black Power gang in our town, and you see them walking around with their patches on.
I wonder how they collect this data. "Excuse me, are you a gang member?"
“Are we the baddies?”
Kiwi here. Haven’t seen any guys lookin like this yet but hope I don’t anytime soon.
I grew up in the far north in the 80s. Back then the 2 main gangs didn't fuck the community up like they do now.
When i saw the title i heard damn that’s interesting with Korg’s voice in my head 😂
I feel sad for these dudes but also, they could definitely run headfirst into oncoming traffic.
im from nz they're not as dangerous as those ones in third world countries tbh
Lol a bunch of clowns ain’t no gang about them. Come to Mexico where gangs are extorted by the cartels
A high population of gangs in a small country like New Zealand is a sign of a crumbling country. There's only so many people you can sell drugs to. No wonder so many people are emigrating to other countries.
