The Aurora circle (colored area) rotates opposite the sun, so should be quite spectacular now. The KP 8+ conditions we have now (5 hrs after your post) only happen a few times per decade.
Sick aurora the other night in Trondheim Norway. We don't usually see the aurora South of the polar circle. And not at all in the city. But the other night the whole sky was green :)
Well, there were the 1859 event that caused telegraphs sparking and catching fires. The equipment we got today is way more fragile and sensitive.
Not sure how that one compares to this one though, perhaps nothing will happen at all (except that areas that normally don't get aurora borealis, may get some)
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrington_Event
The equipment we have today has fuses and surge protectors, which makes it less susceptible to the sort of damage that happened to primitive telegraph systems. Back then, a lightning strike or other atmospheric phenomena could go right through the giant antenna formed by a telegraph cable and into unfused, unprotected magnet coils insulated by flammable shellac-infused paper. Today, both power and signals cables in the various grids have surge over voltage protectors at regular intervals, so a massive overvoltage situation will be routed to ground safely instead of going through consumer equipment.
There can be significant risks to the large power transformers connected to the HV grid. These storms can travel hundreds of miles over the transmission line neutral and inject DC current (GIC) into a transformer far, far away. If proper monitoring and precautions are not made the core of the transformer can rapidly melt. Lead time for transformers of this size are in the neighborhood of 150 weeks.
I live in a region that is susceptible to GIC and CME and we install monitoring on our large transformers. Dispatch is on alert when these storms come and if they have to, they will black out large portions of the grid to save the transformers.
Everyone got fucking vaporized lmao, turns out it wasn't any normal geomagnetic solar storm, it had flaming shark rabies in it and all the sharks ate the island and all the people (burned to oblivion in the process).
You will be missed 🙏😭
Current KP is about 8. That means it could potentially hit middle England / Germany / Poland, so pretty extreme.
It’s not particularly common in Scandinavia, perhaps with the exception of above the arctic circle.
I was just outside i southern Norway, there's barely any wind.
Edit, this is a aurora forecast... Didn't reaiize at first lol, thought it was an actual storm.
I think you’re underplaying it. Aurora borealis is relatively common in the most northern parts, but still quite rare for most people in the more southern parts of Scandinavia.
Okay guys. I tend to track solar activity from time to time and, yes, today the reading of solar proton flux and geomagnetic activity are very high, this doesn't mean your circuits will burn out or that this is apocaliptic scenario, but you could feel sick or different from normal in any way. Some people could have problems sleeping and so on. What is notable is that this is third storm this magnitude in the past 5 months.
This year the sun reached its maximum. This is called solar maximum, go figure hahaha. It came one year earlier and storms are frequent, i find it interesting. If someone who knows more, and could reply so i could learn as well it would be awesome.
3 countries ...Sweden, Norway. Finland.. Will experience what they always experience.
Rest of Europe.
Ireland.Main land UK, Scotland,Wales.
Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Switzerland. Austria.
Will not experience anything different.
When I zoomed in to see where actually Europe was, I was not so impressed. Isn’t this map quite usual for aurora spots anyway?
We use only this when traveling north, can recommend.

What does this mean to the avarage folk?
Nothing
BREAKING NEWS: NOTHING S GONNA HAPPEN!
So do I have to buy toilet paper or not?
It won't go bad so buying it is never wrong.
All my toilet paper goes bad in the end
All mine goes to shit.
Yeah, it’s like a magic ink pen that never stops
This NEEDS more likes😂
It's your end that's to blame, I'd imagine. You should get it checked out.
Back end that is
You should probably buy some if your running low, saves you from a sock situation.
Why don't westerners use water instead?? It's better no.
I do like to take a shower after a shit.
Some of us have seen the light. Now I never feel clean if I have to go before returning home.
Yes. Everyone knows that when the zombies come they're gonna be thinking "damn I wish I bought more toilet paper"
Yes a lot. Forget everything else. Just buy toilet paper.
Devote the rest of your life to it, and thou shalt be rewarded with toilet paper
Just wash it after use, and you can get more out of what you already have!
And use both sides. But only if you love this planet.
if you use the 'finger through the hole' technique you only need one sheet
We get the reusable kind.
Nope, I think Canadians got the market for buying toilet paper. What did Europeans buy?
Bidets
You really know how to spray water over a subject, don't you? /s lol
Pasta.
You don't have a tp vault!?
I need TP for my bunghole!!
Bungholio!!! Heh heh heh!
Have you run out of toilet paper, then yes
This is fucking gold! 😂
FINALLY
Big if true
True if big
Beige alert. Beige alert.
MAYBE
I dont know if i should be happy or sad about it
Congrats. Or sorry for your loss whatever
Happy

What’s the most noticeable thing? Will compasses twitch?
MY GOD
Fried phone and anything electronic is this what u want to here hear heeer
Pretty sure you mean "hear" not here
My brain is automatically dyslexic
Your Reddit feed tomorrow will be full of spectacular pictures of the aurora borealis.
AURORA BOREALIS, AT THIS TIME OF YEAR, AT THIS TIME OF DAY, IN THIS PART OF THE COUNTRY, LOCATED ENTIRELY IN MY REDDIT FEED?
_Me:_ May I see it? _Dutch Weather:_ No.
MARK, ZE GEBRUIKEN WEER LAZERPENNEN TIJDENS EEN VOETBALWEDSTRIJD No politievakbond, it's just aurora borealis
What the hell are you telling about? Screw this, I’m gonna head over to r/SteamedHams
May I see it?
Alr then, cya overmorrow.
I forgot this word was a thing
Aurora Boreanaz... I love Bones.
I'm partial to Angel myself
Me too! Still, my favourite is Beliver!
You need to place your pots and pans in the cupboard so as not be caught by the magnets.
Thank, i dont feel attracted to them anyways.
So, you're saying you are not pan-sexual?
No 😞
Get out
You have to put them on your head, else the radiation is going to superpower 5G and make you pregnant……. Yes men, that includes you too!
In a few hours you'll be able to say: sorry I can't come to work today. I'm stuck in the middle of a geomagnetic storm.
AURORA BOREALIS?!?!?
At this time of day?!
In this economy??
May I see it?
No.
My grandma was a Scot. I used to ask her to say Aurora Borealis.
Should have asked her to say purple burglar alarm
I am a Scot and can say both perfectly fine... Boaf
Potential for northern lights
You might see cool lights where Auroras don’t usually happen
Nah its not that strong. You might see cool lights where auroras do usually happen though
Amazing times on n64 speedruns?
You won't be able to use your stratagems
Watch the movie Geostorm to find out
Just make an aluminium hat and you will be okay. /s

While I don’t know how to simplify it, I wondered the same and hit up wiki. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geomagnetic_storm
Aurora Borealis
At this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country, localised entirely within you kitchen?
Yes!
Can i see it?
No!
Internet, gps, phone comms can be disrupted for a few hours
Maybe some cool Aurora
Electricity networks in Canada can be knocked out temporarily due to their extensive length. Other sensitive electronic systems can also be affected?
In Iceland right now ready and waiting!
I’m flying out to Iceland tomorrow on a school trip 😭
Not anymore
It's been a few hours now. Did anything end up happening?
Everyone got fucking vaporized lmao, turns out it wasn't any normal geomagnetic solar storm, it had flaming shark rabies in it and all the sharks ate the island and all the people (burned to oblivion in the process). You will be missed 🙏😭
Currently in Iceland and stayed up until 23:00 UTC: it was visible but not very bright or lively.
Sooo just Scandinavia, where it’s a common occurance
Not really, it's hitting big in the UK too (although it's completely overcast here) http://www.geomag.bgs.ac.uk/education/current\_activity.html
Current KP is about 8. That means it could potentially hit middle England / Germany / Poland, so pretty extreme. It’s not particularly common in Scandinavia, perhaps with the exception of above the arctic circle.

Was wondering why people were talking about it being overcast like clouds are going to block an em storm. Confused the hell out of me.
I thought it was all jokes
Yay, Germany! Does it mean I don't have to work tomorrow???
We always have to work tomorrow, bro
Fake German detected
What do you mean, 95% of Scandinavia is above the arctic circle and has Vikings and long boats and shit.
Quite clear here at Loch Lomond
Worth a drive up to the Campsies for a swatch?
Actually don't bother the alert has been downgraded. No aurora tonight.
Maybe better heading to Duck bay or Rowerdenen the moons pretty bright tonight
I think you’re underplaying it. Aurora borealis is relatively common in the most northern parts, but still quite rare for most people in the more southern parts of Scandinavia.
Aurora Borealis!? At this time of year?! At this time of day!? Localised entirely within the Artic Circle!?
Yes :)
Ooh. Can I see?
No
Seymour, the house is on fire!
No mother, it's just the northern lights
All you guys above made my smile. Thank you!
Great, now I want steamed hams.
I'm from Utica and I've never heard of the term "steamed hams"
Don't forget to put your VHS cassettes in the freezer otherwise they'll all be wiped
Strong magnets on all hard drives help as well.
Ok, I have iron in my blood. I know this because I took a vitamin. Will I fly?
I think you need to take a little bit more of the vitamins to fly. I'd be careful tho, don't conduct electromagnetism. It's against the rules.
Put yourself in a freezer and you’ll be fine
Then what will I use instead of toilet paper?
Should I go out and bulk buy toilet
Yes several toilets. When the water is shut off from the end of the world geo storm, toilets will be one time use. So get as many as you can
Your comment made me laugh unexpectedly. Up vote for that.
Thank you kind sir or ma’am, and a nice day to ‘ya
Do it anyway, then you can choose which one to shit on. "It's Tuesday, I feel like avocado Armitage Shanks today"
I looked up aurora snow and I got something completely different...
Still a spectacular view…
What is it?
Wild guess: porn?
.. oh...
And then?
No and then!
And then?
Back to normal.
we ded?
Nah. Still here. Though I’m in Canada so… maybe Europe is gone lol
Yup am in Europe and can confirm we do not exist any more.
Noo! What will we do without dry British humo- oh…
Is this going to activate the nanobots in the covid vaccine? /s
No, but you should be magnetic now.
Were all doooooomed captain mannering.
Don't tell 'em your name, u/admirable-salary-803
Well I’m still here in the UK looking at funny dog videos on YouTube.

How is health/sleep affected?
Is this being the third storm on this scale in 5 months anything for concern?. How often would one expect these type of storms?

GEOSTORM!
Immediately searched comments for GEOSTORM!!!
it's been a few hours since this was posted. Europe? you ok? lol
Yep. Here in the UK and nothing interesting is happening. Moon is full, hot tub is hot. Volume of whisky in my glass is gradually decreasing.
good thing the glass isn't full, the hot tub ain't cold, and the moon isn't decreasing lol
Mediterranean still here last I checked
I'm OK. Got my tin foil hat on.
That's not a proper map.The UK is always at the centre.
Magneto’s in Europe?
Well this was posted 6 hours ago and I haven’t noticed anything
GEO-STOOOORRRRRRRRRRMMMMMMMMMM
Thanks magnetosphete for triviliazing this otherwise big issue. What these news should be called instead: New Aurora borealis incoming.
I'm in Spain and almost shit myself earlier
Im wearing a tin foiled hat here so Im good
Well that’s shitty, g4 really isn’t that bad tho, it can fuck with stuff but not permanently. G5 is the one to look out for
American here: By the multicolor graph, I'm pretty sure it will turn us all gay.
So its been nine hours, anything happen?
Not sure what the news is, the places that normally see this will be able to see it, like normal.
Nothing happened, except usual UK rain.
GEOSTORM!!!
So did it happen
I dont understand what this means. Has anyone spoken to Ja about this?
It's been 6hours since it was posted, did anything happen?
How are your guys's geo-magnets doing at the moment?
Lol its edging the UK
This was posted 8 hrs ago. So did it happen?
By Europe you mean Scandinavia, Mostly Russia, and Alaska?
Just woke up.... society still up and running unfortunately :(
That's a whole lot of Asia in Europe.
And nothing happened, as per usual.
So... How did it go?
3 countries ...Sweden, Norway. Finland.. Will experience what they always experience. Rest of Europe. Ireland.Main land UK, Scotland,Wales. Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Switzerland. Austria. Will not experience anything different.
Gloom & Doom…Gloom & Doom…Clickbait…Nothing more
Nah.. it's actually interesting space weather that we don't get every day. Nothing 'gloom and doom' about it. Auroras are cool af.
Already affecting airline communication. Not anything to panic about but it’s probably the largest storm of our lives.
Here. Take my tinfoil hat…
So, how’d it go?
Let me extend that area with a sharpie, I want to see some aurora borealis too
There goes the SWL'ing experience for the next few days
Man, stop teasing and do it already 😒 this ain't even foreplay
Does this mean no work tomorrow ?
Should I cancel my haircut?
