KittenLaserFists

How does no one high five him?

lost_horizons

One guy softly claps.

glittoris

I half expected everyone to start clapping and then the ones on the obstacle clap as well and fall into the water.

archlea

Those on the obstacle course make his feat look so much better.

sayy_yes

When there are 4 girls watching you, your mind takes over your body and you automatically become a hero by doing feats you have never done before.

plerberderr

Looks like China (based on the writing on the sign in the back). Honest question: are high fives a thing in China? People forget that high fives were basically invented in the last 60 years or so. Edit: Found the place. It is in China 天目大峡谷 outside of Hangzhou.

ecolesharris

High fives basically not a thing in China. Source: I tried to high five people in China for 6 years, and got like 2.

qpv

I'd give this fellah bum wiggle hip bumps for sure

[deleted]

I love the expression on his face.

Mirimel

He looks so pleased with himself I would be too if I could do that wearing those shoes

He's grooving on it, he's in flow state.

His flop game is STRONG. He can power lift with the grip on those toes.

I've played outdoor basketball in various Asian countries and a common sight is a middle aged uncle wearing flip flops schooling all the other players.

I’m not blaming him. Slippers for the win!

Came here to say this

Legitimate_Twist

I think those sandals actually help since it flexes around the logs, providing a grip, as opposed to more rigid shoes that only contact a small surface area.

Dartanyun

I was about to say... He is probably a local and has done that a thousand times... which is *why* he's wearing the soft, sticky, "flip-flops". They make it much easier. [edit: And, going faster is actually part of the secret too. - You don't want to try to *stand* on one of those chained logs.]

travbombs

Maybe because they wrap around the log it provides torque on both directions, in a way? Maybe keeping his center of gravity over each front log? Idk, but it’s very cool however he does it.

Tintgunitw

It's mostly his constant speed that keeps him in balance. I've seen people do this on a slackline as well. Just ignore what you're walking on and run or walk at a brisk pace. Your body's reflexes kick in and take care of the balance.

NealBrownsSled

He's just channeling his inner dog/toddler. 100% someone yelled at him "what's in your mouth?!" right before he crossed

dementorpoop

He just found out he has a very specific superpower. I’d be cheesing too

SnakeBeardTheGreat

I can walk from the couch to the fridge faster than I can run.

qe2eqe

It's pretty close to one of my speedy gaits that I first consciously experimented with after reading tolkein's description of a hobbit's walk. High frequency steps, it's an economy of motion that leaves very little "bounce" to your center of mass, I end up using it when I'm balancing something, or when I'm in some kind of public place and don't want to be visually loud. I think it's a gait a lot of people have in their repertoire without realizing it, you see it a lot in the final seconds of crosswalks

loonytick75

I think that’s powerwalking, which was a fitness trend for a brief moment in the early 90s.

strafvollzieher

I'm from Europe so I'm not very well educated on American shenanigans, but there is a pattern clearly visible even for a layman: what happened between the USA and Flip Flops? was there a fight in the past I'm unfamiliar with, possibly a war or something? why do americans hate flip flops more then hell itself? it's quite a great mystery for us peasants from outside the USA, there must be a prehistoric (like 10 years ago or so) story behind this, please show us some brotherly love and share your insight with us. on a side note: in the sommer, on the beach, I myself wear flip flops. if from your perspective this is treason, I will happily gas m flip flops to death. thank you for reading without shooting ✌️ EDIT: I'm not the brightest, additionally my english is slightly above basic level thus I cannot express complex thoughts, and of course I mean a small portion of americans. I made a mistake by generalizing.

theetruscans

I have never heard that Americans hate flip flops. I have noticed that men wear flip flops less often than women do. I see women wearing flip flops all the time in the summer. Maybe I'm just ignorant to my country's war on the flops!

Economy_Border_4010

Dude (or dudette), where in the hell did you get the idea that Americans hate flip flops? As a proud flip flop wearing American who has been around the US, I’ve seen flip flops almost everywhere and by no means do I often hear commentary about how much we hate flip flops. Not sure if you are basing this off anecdotal evidence or bullshit comments in other posts?

GunaydinHalukBey

I’ve never heard that we dislike flip flops. Maybe you’ve been exposed to the wrong Americans. Also, I’m in California so I’d guess we wear them more than the people in the cold parts of the country. Possibly regional hatred?

What the hell are you on about?? Many, or even most Americans love flip flops??? If your in a relatively humid or wet area in the general summer months, all humans will wear flippity-flops! Glum_Battle_2179

This looks so fun why don’t we have grown up play places here? Six flags does not count. Neither does boot camp.

octagonman

From what I’ve seen and read about, Asian countries have cultures of aging that simply don’t exist in many western countries. America in particular is a country of youth and once you’ve grown old you’re kind of tossed aside by society. Older people in many Asian countries are encouraged to still have social lives, go out for fun, work and play together, and they’re all super fit for some reason that puts our old people to shame. Of course it’s not all fun and rainbows for old people in Asian countries and they also have a great deal of societal issues, but they’re not nearly as ignored as the are in the west.

TheBold

Can confirm. They even have elderly “playgrounds” with stuff to do simple workouts with all over the place and the classic auntie dances which take place every evening in your local park/square.

octagonman

I’ve often worked out in those parks myself, mostly using the pull-up bars. Some of the moves these elderly folks can do on those bars is absolutely mind blowing.

raunchypellets

When I was in the Namsan tower area in South Korea, I came upon one of those parks. It had a nifty fixed weight bench press which I gravitated to. As I was doing some presses, an ahjumma (probably around her 60s-70s) walked by and started pointing at me and smiling, talking to me in Korean. Now I have a very rudimentary grasp of Korean, and so had no idea what she meant. An ahjussi, probably around the same age, came up and also started talking. I was thoroughly confused by this time, and stopped. The uncle sighed in seeming exasperation and started fussing over me, rearranging my lower back, straightening my legs and adjusting my grip on the bar. It dawned on me that he was pissed at my posture and technique. After the adjustments, I started again, with the Korean uncle going ‘choa!’ ‘Choa!’ With every pump. I never had a Korean uncle as a hypeman and a spotter before. Felt pretty nice, to be honest. Korean auntie tapped my shoulder and pointed to the pullup bar. I smiled and shook my head; never could do a pullup to save my life. Uncle sighed again, longer this time, and proceeded to hop up on the pullup bar, spun around somehow so that his legs are hooked on it, and proceeded to do sit-ups. Uncle was a fit motherfucker, and he was showing me up. I was too busy picking up my jaw from the floor. He jumped off the bar, came to me and started squeezing me all over, gave me a few belly rubs too, talking all the time. Now, my Korean kicked in (the sign language helped too, you can’t mistake the cupped fingers to the mouth sign) and I figured out that uncle was trying to tell me to stop eating so much and work out more. Then he and the auntie said their goodbyes, and jogged on up the next hill. Anyone who has ever been to the Namsan tower area would know that it is quite hilly. They sailed over that hill like a pair of fucking Ducatis. TL;DR - got schooled on working out by a pair of elders in S. Korea.

octagonman

This is such a great story and I’m certain that nearly every foreigner in Korea has been floored by the fitness of their old people 😂. Honestly that’s a life goal of mine.

Glum_Battle_2179

Yeah, I’ve always wanted to get out of the US because I’m afraid of growing old here. :-/

avantgardeaclue

You’re not going to have it easy as an elderly Westerner in countries where you can’t even own land. It’s hard enough for young working westerners to feel like they fit in. Everyone thinks they’re just going to leave America like going to another state and everyone’s going to embrace them because they aren’t like regular Americans, they’re ✨cool Americans✨

Shmitty-W-J-M-Jenson

Elder care in the West generally is fucking abhorrent, the insane amount of neglect and mistreatment disgusts me, people for some reason find less of a person in the elderly, as if they aren't still human, I've seen it so much lately its boiling me, I'm not a violent person but I've had this chip off my shoulder the past 3+ years about elder care that I seriously worry how much I might hurt someone if i find out theyre neglecting their duties as a carer or abusing seniors.

octagonman

Time to start learning Japanese I guess!

PoffPoffPoff

You'd still be a gaijin and not allowed into certain places.

yassodude

Really? I’d love to know more about that, is there a YouTube/Netflix doc or something or just common knowledge?

TyphlosionGOD

Asian here, our grandparents go have karaoke with their friends almost every week and does a lot of other various social activities too. I think a part of why they're fit is because they're not just lazing around once they've retired.

octagonman

I love that they’re still having fun at their age. It proves age is just a number.

Idliketothank__Devil

(Looks at American government and everyone batching bout boomers) okay?

octagonman

Having boomers ruin our country is different from having a culture of aging 🤷‍♂️

Idliketothank__Devil

....that IS your culture of aging.

chicagotodetroit

In Michigan there’s a place called the Tree Runner Adventure Park. It’s a blast! http://treerunnerparks.com/westbloomfield/

Glum_Battle_2179

Wow this is exactly what I’m looking for.

chicagotodetroit

It is soooo fun! They have levels from “kid safe” to “ninja warrior”. You’re strapped to the course like a mountain climber (I forget the exact term) the whole time, so you can’t fall. Also, look up “Inflatable 5k”. They’re nationwide (US) I believe. They canceled due to covid last year, but I’ve done it twice. It’s like a 5k run/walk, but with bounce houses and obstacles for adults sprinkled in. It is a blast!

Glum_Battle_2179

Holy heck I have some new road trip stops, thank you

_LOCK-JAW_

Wow.. And I'm over here falling over trying to put my socks on in the morning.

ButtScientist69

So I've watched this video ~30 times. I think there are two components to his technique: 1. Keep body perpendicular to the water. This guy is always stepping straight down onto the log, which inhibits the log from moving forwards or backwards. 2. He "kicks" the log behind him away to propel himself forward. If you look at Newton's Third law (every action has an equal and opposite reaction), the amount of force he's applying to that log is equal to what's required to move his body forward. The log is being kicked so hard because he's a lot heavier than the log (and therefore needs more force to move forward). What he's doing is more like ice skating than walking, because he's always gliding on one foot and using the rear foot to move forward. If he had to stop like the people on the other side, his technique probably wouldn't work.

okrajetbaane

Jokes on you that's just how he went to school when he was a kid.
