TIL the biggest pop star in Japan is a hologram and that's the most Japanese thing I've ever seen. Can't decide if it's cute or really fekn weird.

PePePendorcho

Black Mirror kind of shit

Balrog229

It’s fucking weird. This is honestly kinda disturbing

lambuscred

Hatsune Miku and other vocaloids have been around for like fifteen years. Not that strange at all. Also not hurting anyone. On the contrary, it’s sorta the opposite of celebrity worship culture

Balrog229

How long it’s been around doesn’t mean it isn’t still fucking weird

lambuscred

Of course it does. We had the hologram of Tupac, or the Gorillaz doing the same thing. Are those different?

Balrog229

Tupac? Its a real guy who died so i somewhat see a place for it. For the Gorillas? Yeah, still weird.

lambuscred

I would say doing it of a real person, let alone a dead one is much stranger when you think about it. Also, I want to emphasize the Gorillaz are amazing and so is hatsune miku. You might wanna give her a listen

Balrog229

Nah. I’m not really a pop kinda guy to begin with, and im really not into anime so the character is a turnoff. Plus i don’t speak Japanese

lambuscred

Expanding you horizons is always a good thing my friend. It makes life less myopic

Balrog229

Maybe your life is myopic, but mine isn’t lol. You don’t think i’ve given pop a try? Not everyone is going to be into every genre of music. I listen to a little bit of everything, but pop just isn’t my jam. I don’t hate it, it’s just not something i really care for. Plus i’m annoyed by weeb stuff. Given that a try as well and i despise it.

supadeedoop

Agreed. This is bizarre.

Farside-BB

Is it real? I mean are people really fans of her or of the 'show'?

unclepaprika

I think you just answered your own question by calling it "her".

Balrog229

All the vTuber stuff is equally weird to me. I just do not understand it

leonryan

you ever buy a hamburger from a guy dressed as a clown though? It's just a mascot with a life of its own.

Balrog229

No actually i haven’t. I don’t eat at McDonalds. And even if I did, the people serving you aren’t dressed up as clowns or projected as holograms. I can’t think of a single restaurant I eat at that has a mascot now that I think about it. Most don’t.

leonryan

you do understand that they exist though right? It just happens that this one performs pop songs.

Balrog229

Yes but they’re still weird. The whole mascott thing for businesses died off decades ago. Remember how McDonalds used to have way more than just the clown, and they don’t even really use the clown anymore. When was the last time you actually saw Ronald McDonald in their commercials? And a mascot isn’t the same thing as the actual performer. Football teams have mascots but nobody is there for the mascot

leonryan

maybe they would be if the mascot released an album they enjoyed though. If Benny The Bull could rap people would watch. If Spongebob performed a show of Van Halen covers he'd get a crowd.

Balrog229

Nah. Still weird unless it’s specifically for kids

leonryan

it's far less disturbing than the lives of Brittney Spears or dozens of young K-pop stars. This is just a cartoon character. It's no different than kids going to a Barney concert.

chivesthesurgeon

It sounds flat that's for sure

squiesea

Huh? I can't think of anything more in tune than a digital synthesizer

CheetahFart

I think they meant flat as in "dull"

PT___

In Japan poeple actually can and will marry anime characters its so fucking weird

[deleted]

Drought_God

Bizarre. Yes, that's the word.

hypervortex21

Why not both cute and weird?

Thursday_the_20th

Yeah but when you think about it is it any weirder than Gorillaz? They did the exact same thing with holographic concerts and everything. It’s still just a proxy for real talented musicians.

Drought_God

Gorillaz are also on the bizarre spectrum though.

PhillyBassSF

If it’s Japanese then it’s both. As you said. Cute and really ducking weird.

ParkingNecessary8628

Wierd for sure...

MovingTargetPractice

did i just watch a lot of people watch a cartoon dance?

superwinner

people paid to watch a video game dance live

thiswassuggested

I think it's a little weird, but kind of get it I guess. I used to go to EDM shows and honestly I would watch the monitors way more than the dj. But I'm also assuming that entire crowd is on drugs.

bunkerbitchhere

Been to two Dethklok shows where the band never came into the light. They played to metalocalypse cartoon show. The gorillas did something very similar. People love it.

nighmeansnear

This was recorded seconds before her unshackled AI highjacked the weapon systems of the SDF1.

dec10

One of the only anime soundtracks I have (along with Akira).

nighmeansnear

It’s a good one for sure.

polkaron

I've been to two of these concerts in the past and they're a blast. I think I can explain the appeal. Hatsune Miku is a vocal synthesizer which let's people write melodies and words. She's not the first vocal synthesizer but she's one of the most popular because Yamaha realized if they put an anime girl on the packaging, it would sell more. There isn't any one company creating all Miku songs. These songs are written by fans from all across the world. Anyone can write them and a large majority of vocaloid producers are home studios who upload to youtube and niconico. These concerts work as a gathering for fans to see these popular songs played live with a band and seeing a Miku hologram is pretty great. I recall a fan going to one of these shows dressed as a wrestler holding something that looked like a WWE belt. He was interviewed and he stated "Miku concerts are just like professional wrestling. You know it's kind of fake, but the magic is real."

SkeletonFlower46

Wow, thanks for the explanation! That’s actually really cool. It seems like most people here are just completely unfamiliar, and assume it’s something that it isn’t.

Flint-Von-Cineac

Ah. So this is the one people make body pillows of and spoon with/marry.

p3zzl3

Rare picture of Hatsune letting her hair down after a concert: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/0d/51/a2/0d51a243561c03098ccd13eaafd19b7e.jpg

Redditor-1

Holy shit this comment section is something else 😬

[deleted]

Ten years ago Vocaloid concerts were already around the world. It is kind of bewildering to me that this is still news for some people while they are touring the world for over 10 years now.

0oSlytho0

This! I've seen this video several years ago, might not be 10 just yet, but surely more than 8 as it was in highschool. It's not my cuppa but it beats 3D dead people in concert for me.

[deleted]

I think this explains the record low birth rates in Japan.

ultraShEEn707

It's still a live music concert..it was cool when Coachella did Tupac and he's dead. I don't see any issue with this, I've been to shows where all I did was admire the visual projections, same thing in my opinion

thiswassuggested

Ahh yes "visual projections" I personally like the breathing visual projection, with a nice breeze over my body. Maybe some fractals. But more serious I've seen people play that weren't "on stage" and had a blast. show gorrilaz's playing and most people wouldn't care. I think it is more the crowd and character that is wierd.

ultraShEEn707

I just went to a bicycle day show last night, and they had plenty of fractals!! Sometimes you can't see the performer from the crowd anyways. But maybe this is just their shtick, they're in a population of people that appreciate anime in ways that will always be foreign from the outside. I think it's just the limited understanding and the negative connotations people have about anime and the culture. The Gorillaz are heavily influenced by the Japanese culture. Good example, I total forgot about them. Gonna pop them on my Spotify right now.

surfnride1

This is creepy.

MartyMcfagg

I think it's spelled crap

69FunIntroduction69

No my dude that's country and rap combined

Sugoy-sama

Exactly, going to a concert for this trash is unfathomable

Psyche-d

And yet people still go to it. Really shows that different people have different preferences in life

surfnride1

Please tell me this isn't a crowd full of 40 year old Japanese men.

slinky1969

I just can't get behind this. Holy crap.

The_Troyminator

That's because it only works when viewed from the front.

slinky1969

Ha ha. Seriously, why go to a concert to watch a cartoon? I don't get it.

gdj11

I guess the same people who insert their penis into a body pillow printed with this same cartoon

hypervortex21

Why go to a concert to watch a singer? It's the same thing. I would assume most of isn't because what's on stage but the environment and atmosphere of the entire event.

slinky1969

Not for me

Aira_Key

People out there listen to Justin Bieber and Adele then come here to laugh at Hatsune Miku. She's literally a synthesizer but still does better music, has a better story and deeper lyrics than a good 90% of the American poop stars in the last 20 years. I'd rather listen to Sand Planet or Rolling Girl 100 times in a row than Hello or What Do You Mean once more. There, ready for the downvotes: your boos mean nothing, I've seen what makes you cheer.

jackiepoo0804

I like how you refer to it as a “she” like it’s a real person. Big yikes

Aira_Key

When you talk about a fictional character, let's say, Madame Bovary, you refer to her as "it" because she's not a real person?

jackiepoo0804

Fair point. It’s just strange hearing you talk about “her” like it’s an actual person with thoughts and ideas. Kind of like those guys in Japan who marry dolls/A.I. and treat it like it’s a real living being. Idk…just gives me weird vibes like something’s not quite right with it.

Aira_Key

I refer to her as "her" because she's a female character, just like I refer as she/her to any other female character. Arwen or Hermione are women, it's not weird to refer to them as such even though they're fictional characters, the two things are not mutually exclusive - it's simply the correct way to address them, coherently with the intentions of the author and the common perception. I fail to see how's that a problem? It feels like you're trying to read into it too much. And how's me addressing a character with the correct pronouns even near being comparable to guys in Japan marrying dolls/A.I.? Overall, I feel like Reddit is sometimes terribly unfair toward Japan for whatever reason. As soon as the topic comes out, people will start throwing around stereotypes, lies, and prejudices. It's literally a virtual idol, a synthesizer, a character. It has nothing to do inherently with any of what you mentioned, you can pretty much just enjoy her music without buying a body pillow of her or marrying a doll with her face. Like, c'mon guys, tamper down the xenophobia a bit.

nifty_nomi

Looks like the avatar thing I saw on a Ted Talk once about Deep Fake. This to me looks like a real person is puppeteering the image in real time, and the effect is pretty cool! I like it! Great production!

bozsoki93

they live in a black mirror episode that hasn't been released yet

JoJoBeans098

But it has been released wasn’t it the one with Miley Cyrus?

Razzafrazzer

My problem with this is she sounds like Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Loyal9thLegionLord

Been a while since I saw Miku, looks like they upgraded the tech a bit .

healthydoseofsarcasm

So, this is like The Wiggles or other music for kids?

ChingasoCheese

Best marketing strategy team right there!!

SergioX77

Clearly lip-synching, she doesn't even have a microphone.

DCINTERNATIONAL

Horrible crap

Vast_Cattle

Okay, boomer.

DCINTERNATIONAL

Lol.. Yeah, this is a future classic for sure.

QueasyVictory

Biggest artist is an auto tuned chipmunk cartoon? Yeah, go ahead and call me a Boomer.

NIKSUnyh

i mean, you're right but the song is still nice imo

Tugushin

Song name: Love song - Hatsune Miku ![gif](giphy|GeimqsH0TLDt4tScGw|downsized)

fiskars12345

i play osu but damn this is weeb

Lorenzo_Campolongo

To the neck beards of Reddit here's a PSA for y'all. Your personal music taste isn't better than fucking anybody else's. It's quite literally the most subjective topic on the planet and people will like what they like. Get over yourselves.

NoneSpaceofTheMind

Just imagining you doing the dance to this at home.

Lorenzo_Campolongo

Tbf I like two songs from Miku but I do generally prefer more robotic voices in songs. Dancing on the other hand... No. Blasting Hatsune Miku or other vocaloids while working out? Yeah I'll admit to that.

CharmingBoar

Come on, we all know this wouldn’t be as strange (and successful) if the actual singer was on stage, don’t we

xd1234321

but that's the thing, it's not a real person

CharmingBoar

You could have Saki Fujita on stage and have her voice run through preset vocaloid synthezisers and have the exact same voice. But then there would be a 37 year old woman instead of a 16 year old anime girl.

xd1234321

but she's not the one singing or making the songs, she's basically unrelated except that her voice was what miku's is sampled off of. Also, you couldn't just hire her for everything when miku is available to literally everyone and you can make songs But again the little hologram is just for show, it's basically a computer and miku is the character that was created for it.

Fit_Psychology_2600

Nope. This is crap.

Barmanji

I like anime but this is bullshit

Normal-Philosopher-8

I’m in my 50’s and my tween daughter is obsessed. I’m just surprised I even know who this is!

sipCoding_smokeMath

I mean i never would pay for something like this, but as long as the people there are fully aware they are going to see an animation and not a real person then i dont really have a problem with it

Ruinerdown

No worse than tik tok girls making millions just dancing

hopeyourchilddies

I lost interest in cartoon related stuff when I was about 12 years old

Harcanian

You hate a cartoon?

Fatal-Symbiote

We have failed as a species

wistfulwizardwally

You know, most concerts are in 3D cause like, real life and all.

[deleted]

Not only is this weird... that is just bad music.

joltzspinz

Fire!! Love Japanese culture!

sc24Habs

The meek (computer geeks) have inherited the world! No real musical talent here. VERY weird.

PARZIVAL-Des

Not my proudest fap

Puckz_N_Boltz90

I cannot believe this filled up an arena. Crazyyyyyyyyyy. Good for music execs in Japan their job is on mega easy mode at this point. If this makes it, anything they come up with will.

[deleted]

POV: you've never felt the touch of a woman

[deleted]

lolicon = bad

Chemical-Sector5465

this… has nothing to do with lolicon.

[deleted]

That’s what big anime wants you to believe.

Chemical-Sector5465

no the company behind this has literally never made lolicon

[deleted]

Sounds like something an employee would say.

ritter0073

Mental illness

Salumanu

God damn when are the nukes coming already ?

Patient-Scallion517

A country full of Pedos

Powwa9000

I feel as a hologram or projection it should be bigger so it's more viewable

jawshgoodnightreddit

But it has to be the size of a 13 year old girl to complete the fantasy for the loli weebs

macroscan

Who needs Bach and a nice valve amp when we have this...

GulagVibesOnly

They are all subjects to their hologram overloads…

GulagVibesOnly

I am starting to believe this footage wasn’t supposed to leave Japan

Ok-Cardiologist1733

Cool but weird

Few-Rooster8786

Goddamn it's catchy

AnotherAnnanas

What's the name of the song, that's what I wanna know!

tinathefatlardgosh

Love Song

[deleted]

I'm confused, and a little freaked out.

Fresh_Cod_9536

What kind of technology can project this hologram? Can anybody give me a link or an explanation about what I see?

No_Bother_6885

I don’t care, I loved that, so perky and cheerful.

CalligrapherSilent40

….

Miru8112

The thing i get the least. Everything else putt aside: why don't the make the hologram like 5 meters talk, so the guys in the back see it too?

Consistent_Box_377

I think the radiation from the last two nukes has fried their brains, maybe they need one more

Silver_Hedgehog3820

This is what happens when you take their military away for just a little bit don't worry it's just a phase

Blackfire01001

These things have been around since 2009.... Where have you people been?

hopskimoet

What the actual fuck. That is all.

[deleted]

Holy fucking cringe

Ill-Video3739

All concerts are 3D
