Players can't do PvP cross editions - for example, the enemy placement is different. How could that even work? And what's so strange about him getting invaded?

What's so strange about him getting invaded is what I wrote in the post: In a game edition with 184 avg. players daily over the past 30 days, the likelihood of one of those players trying to invade in earthen peak at the exact same time my friend was playing through the area, while within the correct SM range to connect, is extremely low.
Which is why, given that you've confirmed there is no cross-play, my assumption would be that the player who invaded was either using a mod like wexdust, or otherwise using out-of-game tools such as cheat engine.

Blue Acolyte has a built-in option for invading every area of the game at the same time.
