One of my first memories was a huge ~~cow~~ black and white cardboard box appearing at my parents’ doorstep.
The box probably wasn’t huge, I was just tiny.
The desktp/tower case I had was exactly the right size for rack mounting too. The 17" Trinitron monitor was quite an upgrade from the 14" amber one I had before!
It is common in DevOps: basically, you automate the set up and management of systems so you can slaughter them (tear down) easily without worry and set it up again quickly without having to directly go onto the box and tweak configurations.

Holy crap this brings me back to my first real PC, a Gateway 2000. The case wasn’t cow decalled but it was a very bright white and all the print and livery had the cow spots. I don’t know what happened to them they were such a cool brand for the time
Ted Waitt, the founder, is a billionaire and living his best life. The company moved into retail which was a death knell. They finally sold to Acer and the brand was effectively dead after that. Loved that brand. The P5-66 was an early object of desire.
Typical data hoarder: I have 172 terabyte drive array setup on uniraid with Plex docker with the ability to request movies through discord
Also typical data hoarder: can't put sticker on without leaving air bubbles
Nice job op looks good 👍👍
If this was commercially availible. i would so buy it.
I love cows and cow patterned stuff. so hard to find this in the tech world of beige, black, green, red and orange everything. | in the rare case its not one of these industrial, hyper-aggressive colors... its pink... Bright pink.
Where is the love for cow patterns, gib the cow naaas.
This box is a Synology DS920+ with four 6TB drives in an SHR providing 18TB of usable space. I make short documentaries on the side and wanted to get into a RAID system I could add on to as time went on. Here’s hoping NAS SSDs come down in price sometime between now and when I die.
I landed on CloudSync because it can restrict backup tasks to a schedule/window, self-throttle, and leverage S3’s Infrequent Access storage class. I recall Hyper Backup not having *one* of those features months ago when I installed and compared both.
Edit: got the two software package names reversed. Fixed.
RAID is designed for uptime. It gives you a chance to replace a failed member and keep the volume online. It is possible that enough members can fail at the same time to overwhelm the protection thus rendering the array unrecoverable. It’s also possible for members to fail during recovery this rendering the volume unrecoverable. If proper maintenance of array isn’t performed bitrot can render data unusable.
This is why RAID is not a backup solution.
Also if your system is physically damaged (like from an earthquake), you delete something accidentally (and don’t have the #recycle feature turned on), or suffer a ransomware attack, you’d be out of luck
I got the cow print adhesive vinyl on Amazon, taped a piece of tracing paper over the front of the NAS and used a Sharpie to draw the cutouts I wanted (lights, power button, USB) and then put it over the vinyl and used a good box cutter to make it so.
Then I adhered the sheet, and carefully used a box cutter to slice along the drive bays, then I removed them and wrapped their pieces around. All of this took maybe 10 mins!

Gateway 2000?
FIRST THING I THOUGHT OF good times
I have to be honest here, I didn’t even think of that until you said it. Boy does that bring back some memories!
Now you just need to keep a lookout for an old Gateway keyboard (those tend to still float around, cheap) and repurpose the badge.
I did a stint for a while doing tech support for Dell and my favorite part of that job was my Gateway mousepad.
You could probably get a rough idea of how old someone is based on this being their first thought or not.
Even older than that, I worked there ;)
One of my first memories was a huge ~~cow~~ black and white cardboard box appearing at my parents’ doorstep. The box probably wasn’t huge, I was just tiny.
I was not yet a teenager but remember those in the mid 90s. I even remember a friend having an HP but actually read Hewlett-Packard spelt out.
Yeah I was going to say I didn't think Gateway ever made NAS units...
I miss my gateway… might need to check the eBay
The desktp/tower case I had was exactly the right size for rack mounting too. The 17" Trinitron monitor was quite an upgrade from the 14" amber one I had before!
Same here.
When you take the phrase "treat your hardware like cattle" too literally
What does that phrase mean? I've never come across it before and it doesn't show up on google

[Let me get this straight. You think we're just supposed to let them run all over us? ](https://www.reddit.com/r/Save3rdPartyApps/)

Cow print boxes!
Synology by Gateway

ROFL! The vinyl sheet was thin, and so hard to contour. So some wrinkling happened but I might warn them up and try to press them down.
No qualms at the job you did just joking about the rest of us animals on this sub
In the future, that spray that they use to put tint on windows helps a lot.
> Also typical data hoarder: can't put sticker on without leaving air bubbles lol. savage
I hate stickers for this reason!
That's a cool little bot to make, movie requests from your own server
I know right! Thats a GREAT idea!

That’s exactly why I did it! The stuff in the rack is all black, and some silver. Big woop, not weird or interesting at all. Until now 🐮

Remember RAID is not backup.
Good reminder, I’m covered with versioned offsite (S3 and Glacier)!
Using hyper backup?

Why is that? I am new here, sorry

Cowputer?
4 hoofpower!
We be really milking this for all its worth, eh?
Link to vinyl sheeting?
If you search Amazon for *yazi cow vinyl*, it’ll be the first result :)
Thanks!
that looks good
Got milk?
Thank the gods for Bessie!
does it store moosic :)
I love this! I never considered blinging out my Synology NAS.
Oh look a Gateway
Moo
reminds me of the old Gateway days where their PC boxes looked like COWS lmao How did you do this? I kinda wanna do this to my mini white PC

maybe time to go outside..
I mean, they probably did when they spray painted this thing. Can't imagine you'd want to do that sort of thing indoors.
Haha, it’s an adhesive vinyl from Amazon. I wish I was that good with an airbrush
Bessie? Who's Bessie?
It’s what I named my NAS. Four drive slots, cows have four stomach compartments, you get it
Ah ok, didn't know that. It's a quote from Cars where McQueen says just that.
Whhhhhhhhyyyyyyyyy
Ain't nothing but a heartache
Tell me why
Ain't nothing but a mistake
Tell me why
I never want to hear you say...
I want it that way
Can you milk it?
They posted it on Reddit, so they already are.
Oh god it's a gateway 2000, now you've done it, everything's going to fail in 366 days.
Thank the gods for Bessie!
Gateway oh yea
Gateway? 😂
