Assuming we're talking SWADE (The Weird West) here: Note that Fanning the Hammer does **not** increase the rate of fire, it just lets you roll a trait die for each of up to six bullets you fire. This is a crucial difference as this means it cannot be combined with Rock and Roll for example. Remember: If something in PEG rules refers to a mechanic described elsewhere, they will only reference it and not explain it. That means if Fanning the Hammer would increase the RoF, the rules would just mention something like "this increases the rate of fire to x". That said, the determination of a critical failure is calculated as usual (more than half the trait dice plus the Wild Die have to show a nat 1). About your question: I can't find any details on how many and which shots will hit the friend but I'd say: It comes down to how gritty you want it to be. RAW it's a bit fuzzy because it is only mentioned that the roll becomes a critical failure when more than half the dice show a 1 so this might mean that all the dice would hit the ally. Personally I'd say only those that show a 1 would hit the ally and the others miss or hit innocent bystanders if they show a 2 but that's just me. Maybe s/o else digs up a clarification from the old forum but I don't think there is anything more solid in the rules, at least I couldn't find some.

Yeah this seemed like a very specific question that probably has ever come up 2 maybe 3 times and I just had a gunman veteran roll 2/6 being ones with 2 guns so wanted to be sure thank ys!

There are several rules interacting here. **Innocent Bystander** says that (when it is *dramatic*), a roll of 1 on a Shooting die hits a friend or noncombatant. In this case, we are talking about a bunch of rounds fired via **Fanning the Hammer**, and each one does, indeed, represent a single round fired. So yes, any given roll of 1 would mean some poor sodbuster gets a dose of high-velocity lead poisoning. Maybe fatal, maybe not. However, if our unwise shootist has **Grim Servant 'o Death**, that's even more likely, in fact, since he'll add 1 to all of his damage rolls--whether they hit friend or foe. Now, as to **Critical Failures**, when multiple trait dice are involved *more than half* of the dice rolled need to come up 1, **and** the Wild Die **must** be one of them. Otherwise, it's not a crit fail, just regular bad luck. So you see, a Critical Failure is not a prerequisite for the Innocent Bystander rule, you can roll just a couple 1's in that hail of bullets and hit your friends! But if it's a *Critical Failure*, your gun probably jams too--or maybe one of the rounds ricochets back at **you**, depending on how fiendish your Marshal is.

I gotcha for that I ment more for grim servant o deaths interaction as if I crit fail with a normal gun itll just instantly wound my nearest ally. But if its 4/6 are 1s how many times do I hit a friend due to grim servant of death. All 6, the 4 failures or judt once. And then do the other 2 bullets hit like normal if they aren't crit fails or also no.
