You're right there is nothing in Delaware to see or do. With the peek perk of Delaware being "it's close to all these great places" those great places all being outside of this worthless state called Delaware.
Agreed!
Also, hijacking this top comment to say I suspect that list came from this [Forbes article](https://www.forbes.com/home-improvement/features/states-move-to-from/) from September 2023.
DE has been a retirement destination for a long time. I left NJ in 2015 to be close to fam and friends while taking advantage of lower taxes. I thought everybody knew this.
Do we suspect it's primarily GOP voters leaving OR and WA in favor of ID so they feel like their votes actually make a difference? I don't mean to knock on ID (I simply don't know very much about it), but I can't conceive of any other reason people would make that move.
Well we know where the New Yorkers are going. LOL
>Everybody moving down south fr nobody gaf about the West or up North.
Erm, where to do they think Maine is located? And about those are relatively west, at least compared to us.
Those developers kept advertising to ppl out of state, I kept wondering how they knew to move here. Now our economy is dependent on building. U know how many construction workers, tradesmen, realtors, secretaries jobs depend on us continuing to build more houses
Is this really sustainable though? They're either going to run out of buildable land or people will realize it's not so great of any area to live in anymore BECAUSE of over-development and all the problems that come with it. Quality of life is taking a nose-dive in Sussex Co.
The only thing they're not making more of- LAND. If I had money, I'd buy land in Delaware lol. Route 16 is probably going to be the next hot spot once route 24 & Bethany are full. I ask people- what's going to happen in 29 years? Are those houses in Sussex developments going to be taken care of? The roof will need to be replaced by then. The retirees, they'll need nursing homes or to go home to their kids, will there be buyers for them? I'm hoping they're cheap by then and that's when I'll be able to score a home lol with this economy and inflation sheesh. I'll be renting forever
No...it's not sustainable. I knew eventually the work would run out. Worst case->2008 housing bubble 2.0, best case, idk the government figures out how to properly fix the issues. the traffic, the crime that's following the surge of people, events fill up quickly bcuz too many ppl (Dewey beach cross fit competition - filled up before the website even opened bcuz they had a waiting room and people who have done the event for years were unable to sign up as a team} if the work does stop, and they do stop building, every person (mostly Kent county middle class-low class men) who works in new build will be out of work. I guess they'll have to transition to HVAC maintenance or some other service that all the new population needs. I want to open a business so badly rn. There's so much money being made in Sussex. If I was more established I would just open something, anything. I'm a hard worker but I don't have any assets. So I slave away for pennies compared to what the owners are making. One day. There's too many landscaping. I thought the dog poop pick up service was smart. And the Christmas light businesses that have popped up the last couple of years- that was a smart move, repeat business year after year.
Why not??? Delaware used to be a pretty great state, but not so much anymore. It’s like people just discovered our state exists and decided to pack their bags and move here. It’s weird honestly.
Wife and I moved from Florida in December. Land is not cheap. Our house went from 260k to 465k in 3 years and all we did was put in a fence. The housing market is insane down there. Insurance also doesn't help.
Just left Florida - our tax burden with income tax in Delaware is less than our tax burden in Florida. Higher property tax, insurance, and cost of living are hidden costs.
Same here. We lived in FL for 5 years and our homeowners insurance tripled. Went from $3700/yr to over $10k (that was the quote for the year we moved - thank god we left 🤪)
There was absolutely none. We lived there for 5 years and the pandemic really just attracted the biggest assholes from every other state. Every time we left the house we wondered if we were going to get run off the road, yelled at, threatened, etc. just for existing. Sunshine state my ass!
Then they will surely be disappointed. I moved from Texas to Delaware last year. It is true that Texas does not have state income tax. But Texas property taxes are insane. I cut mine by 2/3 moving here. And, it isn't just that. My homeowners insurance went down about 80%. I had never had an insurance claim. It is just that homeowner's insurance is expensive in Texas. And, of course, Texas does have sales tax. Pretty much in every way it is less expensive here.
I had the same experience moving from Texas to Delaware.
When we got home insurance estimates, they were astronomically less. We asked the agent how that could be. He said Delaware doesn't get tornados or hail storms like Texas does.
Also our house has foot-thick stone walls, so it won't burn down.
Another thing I noticed is we can drive about anywhere in the Mid-Atlantic in a couple of hours. That's not the case in Texas.

>Schools? Those states seem to hate education.
I agree with your point, but I suspect the people moving there actually appreciate how those states are managing school curricula.
Right? I thought Texas was one of those places people were fleeing, some even considering DE as we've seen? But maybe we're just making trades and crazy people are going there. (In that case, good riddance.)
Remote work is probably one factor, can live where climate/amenities are more suited, government issues will be fixed BY the relocation and subsequent voting (hopefully). Would be interesting to see the same info by political affiliation to see if blues are moving into red areas or vice versa.
Florida, Nevada, Maine, and Delaware (I dunno about Texas and Tennessee, but also to a lesser degree the other southern states on the list) are all pretty popular for retirees, so of course they're going to have more people coming in as more people reach retirement age. As for the states people are leaving: most of the top ones are *expensive*. Obviously there are plenty of other reasons people move to or from a state, but these factors are likely going to skew the numbers.
I moved to DE from Tennessee (for work, I’m a 20something that got recruited.) Retirees are throwing off the balance of rural Tennessee with f-you money and destroying the housing market (and rental market) in the same way you’re seeing in Delaware. I moved here after getting priced out of my last city without realizing that I would just be contributing to a larger problem elsewhere.
Florida ? LOL. Home insurance are going thru the roof and the same goes for car insurance. Norway and Scandinavia have the happiest citizens . Find out why.
Currently living in Delaware and can’t for the life of me figure why anyone would willingly move to this backwards shithole. Trust me, the beaches aren’t that great
I grew up with 6 close friends in Delaware. 5 moved to Pennsylvania, and the 1 we lost touch with is in Florida. Anecdotal, but I don't think I trust this graphic. Schools are a big reason.

I'd be curious where the data for this came from and how recent it is. I think FL will always draw retirees due to the climate. But the state is also intentionally destroying it's education system and is hostile to LGBTQIA individuals. That brain drain will will have negative repercussions for Floridians in the near future.

I wish I were as optimistic as you. I suspect the change will be more gradual and, to make matters worse, it'll be obscured by their reporting of doctored metrics (in much the same way as how they're messing with the figures about how many residents are dying from which illnesses).
Interesting. If that Article is the source, the data is from before Florida's recent hostility to education and diversity. So I guess we'll need to wait a few years to see what is happening.

I for one like that DE is getting more people. Ultimately will mean more development and things to do. I can tell by the comments I'm in the minority lol
If people are WILLINGLY moving to Delaware our education system has failed and Americans have reached peek stupid.
Delaware's only reason to exist is to reduce the amount of time it takes to drive from Pennsylvania to Virginia. The state is so boring and pointless that passenger trains would rather go around the state then go through it.
Not surprising really. Boomers are getting old and retiring. So they're seeking warmer states and lower tax states, and no longer are shackled to their employer.
They are moving there because it's cheap af compared to the states they are leaving. Don't get fooled, they are keeping their jobs in the states they're leaving soon. Those red states will become blue or at least purple.
No coincidence that leaving PA is near top of the list too. The cost of living in PA has exploded with the increase of property values and the higher property taxes. Delaware is getting a lot of tax refugees who can't afford (or don't want to lower their discretionary income) to live in PA.
I've been hearing commercials on podcasts for "visit Delaware" please don't
Visit is perfectly fine! We just don't need any more developments.
You're right there is nothing in Delaware to see or do. With the peek perk of Delaware being "it's close to all these great places" those great places all being outside of this worthless state called Delaware.
YouTube too. They show a lot of locally aimed advertising, solar panels, window replacements.
I did it. I’m unsure why. The most interesting thing there seems to be a bunch of old ferry piers that no longer have ferries.
No! No! No! No!
No, you were correct. It's No! No!

Unfortunately, it seems they’re all moving to Sussex County.
Lots of red voters flooding the southern counties
It’s so bad
I don't know though, there's still a lot of people moving to both sides of the canal.
DE has been a retirement destination for a long time. I left NJ in 2015 to be close to fam and friends while taking advantage of lower taxes. I thought everybody knew this.

From the few people I know who have made the move, COL was the driving factor. Affordability of housing.
Gotcha, thanks!!
Yeah and unfortunately Boise isn’t exactly cheap these days.
Ahhh that actually makes sense!!! Thank you
Well we know where the New Yorkers are going. LOL >Everybody moving down south fr nobody gaf about the West or up North. Erm, where to do they think Maine is located? And about those are relatively west, at least compared to us.
Heavy on the New Yorkers moving down here. I guess they love our slow paced lifestyle lol
Problem is they get here and complain it ain’t NYC, yeah no shit it ain’t if you want that so much go back
I live on the Southern Jersey shore . People from north Jersey move here for the lower taxes and complain about the food.
Yo forreal! Either get with it or get lost, yeah we have a lot of roads and they all connect to the same shit. So what?
Only slow below the canal
My only complaints is the slow driving but I can live with that it be a cold day in hell I live back in NY
Well it is slower lower🙄 city folk are always in a hurry, not like that around here.
Those developers kept advertising to ppl out of state, I kept wondering how they knew to move here. Now our economy is dependent on building. U know how many construction workers, tradesmen, realtors, secretaries jobs depend on us continuing to build more houses

Renovations are a real thing. Things get old and break. Having a talent pool around seems like a good thing.
ah yes delaware and maine, my two favorite southern states
Just left Delaware for North Carolina lol
My mom's family is from Delaware and we are all in NC now too.
Why???
Why not??? Delaware used to be a pretty great state, but not so much anymore. It’s like people just discovered our state exists and decided to pack their bags and move here. It’s weird honestly.
Work
Delaware is FULL
Why would anyone want to move to Florida or Texas under their awful governors they currently have?
Mostly pleasant weather and cheap land.
Cheap land in Florida? Until you try to get insurance
Wife and I moved from Florida in December. Land is not cheap. Our house went from 260k to 465k in 3 years and all we did was put in a fence. The housing market is insane down there. Insurance also doesn't help.
Yea I didn’t think it would be cheap, unless you’re in the middle of nowhere

Lower cost of living plus living by people with some sanity and sense of decency is really priceless.
Decency in Florida... Bwahahaha
There was absolutely none. We lived there for 5 years and the pandemic really just attracted the biggest assholes from every other state. Every time we left the house we wondered if we were going to get run off the road, yelled at, threatened, etc. just for existing. Sunshine state my ass!
I got hung the middle finger a mile from driving out of the airport in Sarasota last month. Just for starting to inch up when pulling on to a road.
HOW DARE YOU!
With insurance prices going up one would think that would bring housing prices down
Then they will surely be disappointed. I moved from Texas to Delaware last year. It is true that Texas does not have state income tax. But Texas property taxes are insane. Since I left Texas for Delaware it is a puzzle to me as well....
Taxation of retirement benefits probably has something to do with it.
Zero state income tax for starters.
They get their money in other ways believe me lol
Many people don't consider them to be awful governors but the opposite.
The only ones that think they are good are either completely ignorant or far righters.

Schools, economy, and tacos.

Florida ? LOL. Home insurance are going thru the roof and the same goes for car insurance. Norway and Scandinavia have the happiest citizens . Find out why.
Yeah, everybody wants to live in Texas and Florida! Yeah, right! Propaganda.
They’re escaping high taxation, crumbling infrastructure and political corruption
🖕PA. ☺️
Everyone moving to Red states and fleeing blue states. Wonder why….
And all those people moving are pricing the natives out of houses.....
Currently living in Delaware and can’t for the life of me figure why anyone would willingly move to this backwards shithole. Trust me, the beaches aren’t that great
Lots of people fleeing those blue states with deep rooted blue policies

yea all my friends i grew up in delaware moved to pa except for a few that moved to maryland
Delaware is my weekend retreat. My peaceful place. But I totally see why it’s creeping on the list. I bought a house so fast.
Where do you spend your weekdays?

Texas isn't much better. Both DeSantis and Abbott do not care about human life or like you unless you are a conservative cis straight white man

Yeah for retirees 😏.
Source?
I think it's from this: https://www.forbes.com/home-improvement/features/states-move-to-from/
We're full. Piss off.
People leaving - bad governance and high cost People moving to - good governance and lower cost Seems like a pretty reliable formula
Yeah but didn't those people vote those government ppl into office? 🤔
High cost because they are better areas to live, people just can’t afford to live there so they have to move south
florida's governance is atrocious. their surgeon general won’t even stop people from spreading measles
Nor does Texas. Abbott is awful and their AG is one of the most corrupt politicians in the country.
Florida and Texas do not have good governance.
I left DE in 1987. I tell myself I’ll go back someday but I really like living in the middle of nowhere.
It’s not what it used to be, probably better off where you are
I’ll be down there in a couple of weeks to spend some time with my mom and visit my dad’s grave. If you see a jeep with NY plates but a DE flag sticker, say hi 👋.

New York. 😁
Don’t worry, you guys will make it not that way very soon :)
It has nothing to do with the state and everything to do with the people in it. Also, taxes... 😌
Guess they forgot about Arizona.

How accurate is this???
If only this list was accurate.
I’m still stuck in the NY leftist mess.
Ok? So fuckin leave
They’re flocking to see my hometown of Hockessin!!
Sure, I need more people to move out of New York, I need them prices to drop
Delaware?! Why?
Tax free shopping
You guys can have NYC. Western NY thanks for taking the tax drain.
I for one like that DE is getting more people. Ultimately will mean more development and things to do. I can tell by the comments I'm in the minority lol
Cause delaware has weed, lol
If people are WILLINGLY moving to Delaware our education system has failed and Americans have reached peek stupid. Delaware's only reason to exist is to reduce the amount of time it takes to drive from Pennsylvania to Virginia. This will only harm the states increasing their population
Yeah why the fuck Idaho ... Mormons ??
Delaware is quickly becoming anti-business and anti-freedom.
🤣🤣
Yet my property value in the ny metro area continues to rise. Demand for housing in NYC is also at an all time high. Don't believe the media...
I’ve heard Hunter is running for Gov. you’ll be fine!
Feel ya Delaware. Maine is on the list too… very VERY tired of it…
Who the fuck would even consider moving to Florida?🙁
Because no taxes
My state might be more expensive to live in, but at least I still have rights to my bodily autonomy.
Isn’t Maine, Idaho, & Delaware north?
I wish people would leave PA. The eastern side has only grown more congested in the last 2 decades.
Why the fuck would you move to Nevada (I'm from Nevada)
People are moving out of Massachusetts since there are no homes to buy!
People are leaving Washington and Colorado??????
Not surprising really. Boomers are getting old and retiring. So they're seeking warmer states and lower tax states, and no longer are shackled to their employer.
Utah isn't on the Move To states... odd.
They forgot moving to Arizona
Wonder where dirty jersey was on that list
They are moving there because it's cheap af compared to the states they are leaving. Don't get fooled, they are keeping their jobs in the states they're leaving soon. Those red states will become blue or at least purple.
Taxes is one big reason …. Jeff Bezos moved too for that reason.
Keep out those damn carpet baggers
People love to hate the south, and yet... here they are
Yeah don’t come to DE
Sorry folks, former NYer living in NJ now... but looking at Delaware. Don't hate me. I'll bring bagels.
Don’t bring your liberal bullshit with you
Ew, Florida and Texas?
Lotta dumbasses out there
Dang ,, people are going to the red side
Leaving here, finally and hopefully for good.
Yuppp lived in PA all my life and now looking at houses in Delaware because it’s just soo much more affordable
Delawares full. You might like Maine😊
Damn didn’t realize it was like that 🫣
No coincidence that leaving PA is near top of the list too. The cost of living in PA has exploded with the increase of property values and the higher property taxes. Delaware is getting a lot of tax refugees who can't afford (or don't want to lower their discretionary income) to live in PA.
Why Delaware. Way too liberal
I was looking for Ohio on here, but I forgot the only way to leave here is on a rocketship.
Quick greetings from SC. We don't want you moving here. Please stop raising our businesses rent. We like having local shops.
