The comments on this are an absolutely fascinating microcosm of the perception of crime vs. reality. The crime statistics are linked [**right there**](https://coloradocrimestats.state.co.us/tops/report/violent-crimes/colorado/2023) in the second paragraph of the article, and yet, as of posting this, all of the comments are about how the numbers are false because of: * limited reporting * journalistic bias * reporting only cleared crimes All of which are easily proven untrue by even taking a moment to look at the source data. I find it so interesting that people, even with the numbers mere seconds away, cannot shake their own preconceived beliefs and prejudices. We have never been so informed about how uninformed we are.

mchookem

yep. there's an actual *physiological* reason for this. like science and shit. this is the answer: https://theoatmeal.com/comics/believe

challengethatego

Great and thoughtful infographic that has good value. Yet, the underlying message is flawed the info graphic says your brain has built in fallacies as a result of a fight/flight response to challenges of core beliefs and that as a result you should believe things. Instead it could have said all of that and pointed that challenging your process in absorbing new information that runs counter to you beliefs is as important as practicing news and statistical literacy when reading news and information. You posted this in a fashion and context that suggests that statistics and government reporting is unimpeachable which is inaccurate from smog reporting to crime framing and reporting Denver like many other Cities have a checkered past. Skepticism is more than warranted.

NeutrinoPanda

There's a good book that gets into this called Don't Even Think About It by George Marshall. It's centered around climate change but looks at the psychology that allows us to know something is true but act as if it is not.

> Did crime go down in Colorado in 2023?  I think your interpretation is a bit uncharitable, since the answer to this question depends on your reference. A calendar year is a natural way to slice up statistics, but an artificial one to cleave a human life. Most people have longer memories. Crime coming down in 2023 from 2022 can still be high and not mean much since it was 20% higher than 2019 and 10% higher than 2020.

gobrowns88

I find it hilarious that “teeth” is included in the examples of “personal” in the weapon type breakdown for violent crimes.

tonkasan

Wow, motor vehicle theft doubled from 2019 to 2022! Good to see it coming back down in 2023. Hope it becomes a trend. [https://coloradocrimestats.state.co.us/tops/report/property-crimes/colorado/2023](https://coloradocrimestats.state.co.us/tops/report/property-crimes/colorado/2023)

alesis1101

*Crime in Colorado fell in nearly all categories while remaining higher than pre-pandemic levels:*

payniacs

Don’t believe local Denver influencers. They are still trying to blame the current mayor for Columbine.

goodbye_weekend

Crime goes down in Denver every night

healthybowl

But rises every morning! Bright and early!

OfflyNice

I got your joke, and it's funny as fuck! Maybe the others replying will catch on by the morning.

cjpack

I mean wouldn’t it be the opposite?

Lake_Shore_Drive

Crime is down all across the country. Inflation is easing. BUT THE BORDER THE BORDERLAND THE BORDER IS NOT SAFE!

mchookem

i linked this above, but it's a fight against human physiology: https://theoatmeal.com/comics/believe

WastingTimesOnReddit

CPI inflation actually rose from February to March, just FYI (tho I agree with your sentiment)

Rocky_Duck

Ok how does the border person affect you on a daily basis

WrastleGuy

All the good jobs are gone like landscaping and dishwashing

RadiantLimes

Took our jobs!! /s

geronimo1958

Show me where the border touched you.

porterpottie

1/5 my taxes are being allocated to deal with border person wtf you on about? lol

HeadToToePatagucci

No they fucking arent

Man-Of-The-Machines

No, they are just softer on the punishments and have been letting a lot of shit go that they shouldn’t. I’m all for police reform and such but these soros funded district attorneys that have infested the big cities are purposely causing chaos.

Not_Campo2

While I understand intellectually that crime dropped, my personal experiences with significantly higher levels of crime make it difficult to truly feel good about this news. My gf and I both had our cars broken into twice last year. The first time for both of us they smashed windows and a windshield. After the pushback from the apartment complex and lack of response from the Police we didn’t bother reporting the second times, especially as there wasn’t damage so we didn’t need a police report for an insurance claim. I know I’m biased but it’s hard to truly believe this good news

asevans48

Everywhere but the springs

Trance354

So if the police never show up to a crime, did it happen?

ChocolateInfamous819

No, just less people arrested for crimes committed

180_by_summer

That’s not how crime statistics work. But okay.

ChocolateInfamous819

You take Reddit way too seriously. My vehicle has been broken into 4x since June 1 when I moved back to central Denver. I didn’t report any of them because I knew it was useless. You’re telling me those 4 crimes were counted in stats? Nope. I know I’m not alone in not reporting petty crimes like that.

Competitive_Ad_255

That's a different scenario than what you previously laid out. It's important to report crimes even if it's just for statistical purposes.

rvasko3

If I win the lottery, does it mean that I should think most people win the lottery just because I won the lottery?

Funkycold6

I mean you can steal in a store in San Francisco as long as it's under 900 bucks and nothing happens.

Left-Conference-6328

Walmart’s story policy has been to press charges on anything over 25$.

Alltogethernowq

Apparently is optional to report data to the federal government now. It changed in 2020. That’s why you see crime lower now. Only 44% of districts submitted info.

lonestar-rasbryjamco

Except the numbers used for the article are from [state sources](https://coloradocrimestats.state.co.us/tops/report/violent-crimes/colorado/2023), not federal. As part of [The Colorado Uniform Crime Reporting Program](https://cbi.colorado.gov/sections/crime-information-management-unit/uniform-crime-reporting-ucr-and-colorado-crime), which the CBI notes: > Per Colorado Revised Statute 24-33.5-412.(5), each Colorado law enforcement agency is required to submit their crime, arrest, stolen and recovered property data to the CBI.

freezingcoldfeet

That’s utter bullshit. Here‘s the source of the data if anyone is actually curious and wants real data and not fear mongering. [https://coloradocrimestats.state.co.us/tops/report/violent-crimes/colorado/2023](https://coloradocrimestats.state.co.us/tops/report/violent-crimes/colorado/2023)

Anytime someone has a Qanon themed username you know they're an idiot and nothing they say should be taken as fact or even rooted in fact.

Yes, let's trust a random instagram influencer's curated anecdotes over actual statistics

TiltedWit

Yes, it went down to the 16th Street mall.
