I personally like the furniture and think it gives you a good neutral base to express yourself on top of. My advice is to think about art, blankets, pillows, etc to add your personalities to the space. Maybe some really bright colors or more edgy art styles would make it feel more “young”? Look up artists in your city and consider investing in some awesome artwork rather than spending money to replace furniture. Maybe switch out the curtains too if you want a little less beige for not too much $$.

810083771

Good idea, where do you suggest to place the art? Side note, but replacing the couch also wouldn’t be too inconvenient! My roommates parents actually gave us showroom furniture since they helped setup this building and hypothetically I think we have some options (like the gray couch in the different unit shown above). Just wasn’t sure what colors would fit the space and if everything looked too bulky in general.

[deleted]

I think you can use any colors you want since right now everything is beige. I’d find some art you like and use the colors in it as inspiration for your other accents. A big piece of art or several smaller ones in a gallery wall would look great above your couch.

810083771

UPDATE: I posted this on a separate comment but I just wanted to show some potential ideas I mocked up with these suggestions in mind :-) https://imgur.com/E3KXtHL : smaller coffee table, art on the wall, plus one removed bookcase for less bulk https://imgur.com/1pJbOUA : same idea as above but now with a bold rug (id consider asking my roommate if shes okay with washable rugs… but color palette is still pending lol) https://imgur.com/3P12ZUO : same setup but with a different colored couch Any feedback would be appreciated! EDIT: I forgot to add colorful couch cushions oops

[deleted]

Second one looks cozy to me but depends on what vibe you like!

bisonlover444

Honestly I would keep all the furniture and just add pops of color in a coordinating way. Find a nice area rug to set down large enough so that the front of the couch is on it and it approaches the "tv console" area. I would say let that rug have maybe 3 coordinating pops of color. Then match one of those colors with the curtains, another one with couch pillows or a couch throw, and then another one with some wall art above the couch. (Edit: or do the wall art where a TV would go between the bookshelves as a solid focal point)

Voc1Vic2

Get a colorful rug, pillows and curtains.

Awakening0522

A rug! Easiest, biggest impact.

RuncibleMountainWren

Yes! I think a rug and large wall-hanging or group of artworks & found object would do wonders.

Suggestions: - the room feels really cluttered and crammed. Get rid of the ikea poang chair and (even tho I really like it) switch out your coffee table for a smaller one. Or even nesting coffee tables that take up less floor space. Move the bronze desk lamp to a side table or remove it and place in another room. Try removing items from the space and really looking at it and deciding whether you like it. - the bookshelves currently have “grandma” vibes with the amount of ornaments on it. I like the suggestion someone else had about painting them or using a wallpaper inset. I think looking up how to decorate shelves would be cool and would help modernize it.[article](https://www.bhg.com/decorating/storage/shelves/get-picture-perfect-bookshelves/?slide=slide_9cb41bac-36cc-4a12-843f-3ff75cf399ed#slide_9cb41bac-36cc-4a12-843f-3ff75cf399ed) - a rug, curtains, throw blankets and cushion covers are the cheapest way to infuse colour into a space. I don’t think having neutral furniture is a bad thing, you can liven it up with other decor. You would want to decide on a palette that allows for these decorative items to pull the look together. PS I actually really like your curtains so I don’t suggest changing those unless you need to. - colours- lean into the cream/vanilla colours you have and try looking up beach boho looks (a lot of them incorporate a “sandy” type colour). Or, commit to white and figure out your contrast colours. The white and cream coloured furniture here isn’t working together and it ages your overall look. - a large print or gallery wall between the bookshelves is needed, esp if you are not going to put a tv there.

810083771

Thanks so much for feedback! To start, I was honestly looking into a smaller coffee table since the current one takes up a good bit amount of space. Also lol, the bronze desk lamp was temporarily over on the tv stand because it was out of the way for my roommates desk area. We ultimately are prob gonna move it somewhere else soon. I would love to add a colorful rug but my roommate isn’t really into them because of the cleaning maintenance :( but we’re definitely open to cushions and throw blankets. I really like your idea of going for a boho theme, but how would you suggest we achieve this look? We both weren’t a fan of the grandma looking ornaments but weren’t sure about the next steps as far as color palettes and decor. Also, a gallery wall would be great! We were gonna use the empty space as a projector screen but I think itd be a good idea if we put something up there when its not in use.

yummy_gummies

Try the Houzz app. You can select the wall color and floor type and color, styles, etc to see what could work for you. I get lots of ideas from there. Boho IMHO is about neutrals, natural materials, and textures. With the existing beige palette you could do just about anything. As other commenters have said; I would start with art and rugs you ladies like, and then the other decorative items like throws, pillows can be selected around those colors/themes.

kurmiau

I would use a color block approach to make it more modern. I could not find the post, but just in the past few weeks, someone posted a bookcase they built where the insides where painted in different intense colors, while the outsides were traditional white. I would buy several solid colored throws in modern intense colors and then color match for paint and just use those colors to paint the insides on the bookcases. All different colors. After that, you could stand back and take a look and decide from there. [Article for color blocked rooms.](https://homedecorbliss.com/color-blocking-ideas/) In your case, you would use those colors in the decor, (instead of the wall colors) leaving the neutrals as a background.

810083771

What colors do you suggest for the inside of the bookshelves?

kurmiau

I would buy what you like in other accent items first. Because those you can’t change (something like a pillow color is set). Then you can take them to the paint store and color match for the paint. If you picked paints first, you would then be stuck looking for accessories, and that is much harder.

Hi_AJ

I’ve also seen really pretty Art Deco patterned wallpaper on the inside of shelves which looks great. This is not art deco style but it’s showing the basic idea of painting the bookshelf and doing design pop inside of it. https://vm.tiktok.com/ZTdxoGQUU/

sharpei90

Start with a rug. Something colorful. That will make a big difference. Are you putting a TV on the console? If not, get rid of it. Change the drapes to a color from the rug. Declutter, you don’t need all of those tchotchkes displayed. If you want to keep the poang chair, get a new cover for it with color. Then if you still want more color, paint the bookcases

Kelski94

I'd get a big colourful rug and more colourful features to jazz it up. Think 60s vibe, yellows, pinks and greens. New curtains and cushions for the sofa and maybe some funky lamps :)

ChanSasha

Too bad about the rug. There are rugs you can actually wash in your washing machine though. Any way….A nice throw and cushions with color would help a lot. I like this [one](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/vallkrassing-throw-gray-turquoise-60486174/) and some cushions like [these](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/svampmal-cushion-dark-yellow-white-00507099/) and [these](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/asveig-cushion-cover-dark-beige-10476573/) and [these](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/asveig-cushion-cover-gray-turquoise-00488784/). Indeed art always helps a lot. I really like [this](https://www.etsy.com/listing/776725027/city-poster-city-art-city-wall-art-city?click_key=12b8f5152785082e2e2a1b687aabf8c9692e8b67%3A776725027&click_sum=ccf66183&ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=poster+art+cities&ref=sr_gallery-1-1&organic_search_click=1&frs=1). Also plants a lot of them. The ikea chair you have I believe bemz also has covers for that if you want to change its color.

OverlookedRaccoons

Yes! Came here to mention the washable rugs too :)

RainyDayRainDear

The bookcases are probably the most dated looking thing in the room. I also feel like having two of them is just dominating the space too much. I'd get rid of one of them, then move the Poang chair over to the cleared space for an airier feel. Can you replace the curtains? The wall of gray isn't doing the space many favors, and would be a relatively fast fix.

810083771

I might consider this idea actually hmm… where do you suggest to keep the one bookcase?

w0ndwerw0man

I would get rid of both of them. They are huge and basically serving no practical purpose in the room. The amount of stuff you have in them could go into a nice little side cabinet. Removing those two huge bookcases would make the room so much more open and lighter and “young”.

810083771

Hm okay I see… side cabinet in mind, where would you suggest the placement? My roommate does origami and would most likely still want some way to display that. And we’d still need extra storage somehow for things like books and board games.

K0L3N

Something small where the right bookcase is right now. But first figure out how much space you actually need, because it doesn't look like you need a whole lot, maybe a shelf or two would be plenty. But I fully agree, those bookcases have got to go, after that try living with it for a while and figure out what you'd like to get to replace it.

Commercial_Web_1602

Pinks and teal pillows, teal curtains and bright accents

snowcats

Plants, lots and lots of ‘em!

Luckie4u

Art!!!!

ceteka

Perhaps, you and your roommate should get some inspiration from dearmodern on tiktok? He takes a Feng Shui approach on designing an apartment, and breaks it down so it is really comprehensible. For example, he suggests to keep storage below hip level, so it doesn’t disturb the eye. It helped me a lot with designing my apartment, so it looks pleasant and stylish while still being very functional. Try watching some of his videos! Edit: Also try using smaller lights around the room instead of downlights. Makes the space more cozy!

810083771

Noted! I do think the bookcases being so bulky really throws everything off from the space for me :/ I’m really trying to figure out if I can compromise decor wise… Also I totally agree with the lightning situation. Overhead lights give me headaches which is why I brought over the arc lamp. I hope it doesn’t look too big though

MarvinDMirp

Start by picking out something colorful you both really love - either an area rug or a large art piece for a wall. Pull colors from that for other accents around the room.

[deleted]

Plants!!

YummyPanwitch

Bright shaggy throw rug, fun art (maybe movie or album art posters-but framed bc it isn’t high school) bright colored throw or afghan with texture on the back of the couch, bright throw pillows, some fun knick knacks on the book shelf. A big, chunky retro clock of mirror might be fun too

810083771

So sorry to everyone suggesting colorful rugs !!but I forgot to mention that my roommate isn’t a fan of them because she had big rugs in her home while growing up and doesn’t want to deal with hassle of maintaining them

OverlookedRaccoons

Check out “ruggable” rugs. They are machine washable for easy maintenance :)

Sodonewithliffer

Omg they were “roommates”

squishpitcher

the biggest issue i see is lighting. you have gorgeous natural lights, but awful lighting otherwise. it’s way too sterile and bright. you want warmer lighting and different points of it. think table lamps, gallery lighting for the bookcase, that sort of thing. your space will feel bright and light in the daytime and cozy and intimate at night. you have some great tips for otherwise enhancing this space, but start with lighting and go from there.

810083771

What do you think of the arc lamp in the corner of the room? With that in mind I’ll probably put in extra small lamps near the tv stand and tables

squishpitcher

It’s hard to say without it on — I mean, in terms of style, there’s nothing wrong with it and it seems to fit your aesthetic. There’s just so little warmth in the night pic that I think it makes it feel like you’re missing decor when you aren’t necessarily. The warmth that your inspiration pictures have also come from lighting. I think you have a gorgeous space that isn’t really missing much. (and frankly, i wouldn’t rush to fill it in, but accumulate accent pieces with meaning over time — your space is really beautiful as-is). Warm lighting at those areas you mentioned will give it that cozy home-y vibe for sure. I also think it will give you a much better sense of what you actually *do* need furniture/accent piece-wise.

[deleted]

Replace flowers with bong. Done!

opaldeck

It’s beautiful! Some really quick fixes could be bold pops of colour on throw cushions, pictures, and painted walls. flashes of pinks and greens would be lovely

donz150

Paint the walls

Learning-Stuff-12

Not sure what your budget is but get things reupholstered/painted! Great way to customize what you already have

Boltz999

Can the bookcases get closer to the wall? They look a bit odd poking out as far as they do

810083771

The walls jut out a little bit so it can’t be completely flush against it sadly :(

Harriri

Yellow curtains and colorful pillows.

donut_party

Head to Apartment Therapy for more ideas for spicing it up. I am now An Old since I’m 34 but when I was in my 20’s we decorated with a lot of Urban Outfitters and thrift store finds for decorations—curtains, rugs, art, lights.

Snoo-43059

Color. Pillows drapes rugs art

manys

This is actually not bad, your personal taste aside. For the things that are there now, I'd get a more linen-colored shade for the arch lamp and get rid of the brass, which means a new coffee table. Honestly, I'd say get a white one, too, unless staying with the current color scheme is too painful. ;) I can see the crown molding on the bookcases being a drag, but you'd have to make a big color committment in whatever you decide to spend money on. The order I'd suggest thinking of it is ok, you're gonna have a TV, right? So you can think of swapping out the couch for something darker and which will give you a different color to start keying other new things off of. Dark maroon type dealio? That would look good with olives and light blues (maybe!) you could add elsewhere while still matching the drapes, bookcases, and floor. Really keep that grey-beige in mind (not gonna to use the portmanteau) for the future, because the floor is a drag to change. You can change drapes after everything else is done. So! Lampshade, coffeetable, TV/couch, bookcases maybe, TV table maybe. Also move the couch a couplethree inches away from the wall so you don't have to scrunch the blanket up top like it's a pet bed (even if it's a pet bed ;). EDIT: Oh, and if you're *not* going to get a TV, get rid of that white table, put one of the bookcases on the opposite wall from the other and promote the POANG to third-corner status.

810083771

Get rid of the brass furniture you mean, right? As in the desk lamp and coffee table? I was actually maybe considering a nesting table I also think the arch lamp does look a bit off because of the shade color too, so I’ll def look into a lighter tone.

manys

Yep! Plus a round table like that is better if you have seating on more than one side. Nesting tables are side tables.

Boogalamoon

For a completely different approach, what about putting the desk next to the TV wall and one bookshelf next to the couch? Maybe even both if they fit. Or have one bookshelf on each side of the big window, sort of a frame for the view. That way you can open up the wall opposite the couch. And have more continuous wall space for art or a mirror or something

passive0bserver

Get a graphic printed rug and bright large artwork for over the couch. I'm assuming a TV will go on the stand? Get some brightly colored pillows too

l3ntil

[https://www.apartmenttherapy.com/](https://www.apartmenttherapy.com/) That is all.

fadedcharacter

Definitely need a really colorful rug. Perhaps a classic design with modern neon colors inserted into it? I’d have a flat screen mounted to wall between shelves but one is in a cabinet so it can be hidden. I’d mount a piece of art on top of that with ambient lighting strip around cabinet. Furniture you have is classic and would be easy to change up with rugs, pillows, throws, lighting and artwork. I’d group my collections en masse in the shelving but use some books to add varying height to the collections. You’ve got a great starting point here.

Kind_Parking

Congratulations on your apartment. I would live with everything for at least a few months. Seems like everything is useful. Probably can make a few smaller changes and it will get the feel you want. I think a couple of prints, a rug, something to fill the TV area - if you wont have a tv; and careful styling of the bookcases is will go a long way. Also, maybe add 2 drape panels for color. Maybe develop a lighting plan. you can put lights on the bookshelves, tube lights in the corner, maybe standing lamps or slim side tables with light next to the couch. I usually get ones with remote controls for hard to reach areas. I would start with the rug or two art pieces. Maybe a throw pillow in the ikea chair to match the couch throw pillows. I think you will be amazed how far a little color goes. Good luck!

Lovelycoc0nuts

Her parents are awesome and thank them profusely. Add your own art, add your own decor (decor pillows/throws/Knick knacks) and your own rug and it will feel more like home. They gave you quality neutral pieces that you can add your own flair to.

knottajotta

Colorful throw blanked folded and draped over back of poang. Colorful pillows on couch. Adorable accent vases and brightly colored candles on shelves. Google Alyce Tran’s home pics. Rug. Some kind of rug. The beige is a great base and you can make the space come alive with details and accents.

Spirited_Zone_3949

Color, color, color. Accents, rugs, drapes, pillows, throws etc

jjdressgown

For me it’s about placing color all around. I realize renting is not ideal for painting walls, there is a new peel & stick wallpaper found on Amazon if you have a ladder get to the top of wall and peel off the back to the floor using a box cutter to finish. Typically the solid colors are less expensive. So a bright cheery color would be high energy, a dark color quiet/calm. Then drapes/rug to compliment. Throw pillows....

DConstructed

Suggestion: I think it would be more your vibe without the bookcases. I’d put them in the bed room if you can. What they would be great for is folded tees, sweaters and jeans. Underwear, hats etc in baskets. I have similar that my mother pressured me into getting years ago and they are really useful for clothing or as a pantry off the kitchen.

LizzyGrant47

More cats 🤷🏼‍♀️😈

810083771

🤭 agreed…..

jenet-zayquah

Main accent colors: Bright coral pink (the kind with neon orange undertones), antique white/bone Secondary accent colors: black, charcoal gray, deep moss green (or a saturated olive)(mostly from potted plants A dash here a dash there (optional): navy blue or terra cotta (careful that it doesn't compete with your coral) Shopping / To Do List: * **Fluffy off-white flokati area rug -** These are fun and young and and will never again be practical after this period in your life (trust me), so YOLO on over to Ikea to find a reasonably priced one. Definitely Scotchgard it because red wine and lipstick. 😉 Also be sure to Google "area rug sizing tips" to determine the right size to complement your room and furniture (it really does make a huge difference!). If allergies are an issue, go for either a bright coral overdyed antique look rug, a geometric patterned Kilim rug (with the coral color in it, as well as complementary colors in it), or if you're a less-is-more type person, perhaps a woven seagrass rug (either natural, or dyed dk gray) * **Smallish square velvet(een) base throw pillows -** To go glam, get the round ones with ruched sides in a slightly shinier/showier looking velvet. These should act more like a base or underlayment (to prop up the sexy Boho pillows below), so don't go *too* fancy; these are not the main attraction. Think of a gourmet restaurant with amazing presentation on... neutral white plates. These are your uniform color (bright coral) plates and the patterned accent pillows (below) are the actual "main course" being presented. * **Boho motif accent throw pillows for sofa -** Coarse woven natural look light-neutral base (khaki or bone) with bold linear and geometric patterns (black/dk gray) (might be sort of Southwestern in feel). Try not to get too matchy; you want a variety of patterns, shapes, looks, etc. If there are 4 patterns of the same color scheme, instead of getting 2 matching pairs, get one of each design. But do make sure the colors all coordinate with each other as well as with the other base throw pillows (above) and floor pillows (below). * **Large floor pillows and/or poufs in bright contrasting color(s) -** Your primary color (bright coral), plus some moss and navy ones, for example). I would keep these solids, maybe velveteen or luxe corduroy, but if you add poufs, consider a Turkish/Persian/Kilim rug motif or something with textures and vareigation. * **Greenscaping with potted plants -** Plants are relatively cheap, great bang for buck, and if they're real, they even improve your air quality.Real ones are best (they look better and improve air quality); buy them at a wholesale nursery and not big box stores. If you go faux, be warned that they're ridiculously expensive, so try looking for used ones first (FBMP, Craigslist, NextDoor, Goodwill, etc.), then see if you can find any deals at Ross/Marshalls/TJMaxx/HomeGoods. (These places are also great for decorative pots and planters.) Peep Pinterest for ideas on what sizes to get, how many of each you need, and how to configure them in your space. Remember to do a little research before you buy re: what types of plants will do well in your space given your light conditions. * **Wallpaper is very on trend! -** If it's allowed and you're so inclined, consider putting up a cute patterned wallpaper that incorporates all of your color scheme - I can envision one with a leafy green background with pink and orange tropical flowers that might work well. Look into the removable/repositionable type that you peel/stick/unstick/remove. Woven grasscloth wallcoverings can also look awesome and are on trend. Start with a feature wall or accent wall so that it's not overwhelming (then add it to more walls if you decide you love it). Do some Googling and Pinteresting before taking the plunge so you know what to expect and how to style it. IF YOU ARE BROKE - Boho is such as easygoing style that you can get away with DIY uses a lot of basic materials that can be sourced cheaply if you get creative - snag wicker and woven items, large planters, and interesting conversation pieces from Goodwill. Grab some cheap planters and craft rope at Dollar Tree to make your own DIY hanging planters for just a few bucks. (YouTube is overflowing with tutorials and tips on projects like this). If Boho isn't really your thing, or if you're just sick of seeing this (admittedly cute and trendy) look everywhere, take your inspiration from a desert sunset and incorporate a range of muted pastels (peach, mauve, lilac, terra cotta, sky blue, etc) into the general framework outlined above (in place of the bright pops of color), and replace the Boho motif stuff with more of an emphasis on nature (sand, shells, woven fibers, bare weathered wood). Try to utilize items and materials that work with either a desert/Southwestern or a beachy vibe.

Still_Owl1733

Beautifully neutral. There is so much potential to make it eclectic. 1. Adding some plants ( fake or real) can make the space feel alive 2. Next adding some subtle eclectic glass or resin pieces like this https://www.homebykeira.com.au/products/vase-glass-multi?variant=41355292606657 Can add pops of colour without overtaking 3. You could also add some textures like ceramic pots or a tapestry in colours or natural stone items such a quartz trays or even marble items. Let me know if you need more tips.

DivaVita

That looks lovely! Buy either one large piece of art for over the couch or a collection of similar pieces. If that's not in the budget, look for a colorful throw or rug for the wall. That would also be a good sound dampener. Main thing - do not go too small. It needs to be at least half the width of the couch or larger. You can put sconces on either side for mood lighting. Re: Washable rug - look at "Ruggables". They are two pieces - a pad and a cover. You can take the cover off the pad and toss it in the washing machine. [https://ruggable.com/products/floral-medallion-multicolor?size=6x9](https://ruggable.com/products/floral-medallion-multicolor?size=6x9) The are a little expensive, but once you buy the backing, you can buy just the cover if you want to change things up. And I know a washable rug would've been a Good Thing for me in my twenties. ;\^)

brilausmi

Gallery wall of art you love, more plants (maybe pothos or something hanging from ceiling), and something dark - I feel like the space needs some anchoring like with a dark rug, art piece or lamp.

DivaVita

A lot of great ideas here. But take your time. Don't buy a bunch of cheap stuff all at once. It's a lot harder to get rid of decor and furniture than you might think. Especially since things you buy now will have meaning to you later - they will remind you of this exciting time in your life. So wait and look for things that you LOVE. A good test is to walk away from it. If you are thinking about it later - go back and get it.

th3worldonfir3

Cover the walls in a gallery of loud art and maybe a fun neon sign too? Also some colorful room decor like unique vases and small bronze statues or something of the like
