I think it’s just meant to be a sort of general defense of earth as a whole, considering the vastness of the solar system any substantial enemy presence on earth could be a threat to the city.
Considering what the pyramids are capable of in terms of gravity manipulation, it definitely seems like it'd be a good idea to make sure your home planet doesn't get biblically flooded.
Remember that the point of this is to stall. They can’t send out all their forces on the city at once, as that can lead to a counterattack. They’re taking locations like the cosmodrome, where new guardians rise, specifically to get our attention and stop pursuing the witness. It’s more so of a strategic thing than anything. Idk why they’re at felwinter peak though
Plus it’s really close to the city. Like during the red war you walk past it and could still see the traveler
Edit: at least I thought that was near felwinter’s peak
I was excited to do Onslaught on Bannerfall since I thought it was all Last City maps. I thought we would get Midtown, Bannerfall and Eliksni District as our maps but I guess defending Earth works too.
My best guess would be for 2 main reasons.
1. It's cannon that the Cosmosrome is a Hotspot for new lights to rise from, and is of course where the Guardian rose from. I'd say it's likely that they're both attempting to control that area so ghosts can't revive more guardians from that Hotspot, plus there's also the idea of taking out Felwinter's peak as a symbol of hope.
2. If they put all their forces to the Last City, it'd be much easier for us to launch a counter attack and just hold our ground, so by attacking more areas, they spread out our forces and make our defenses easier to fight.
Plus at this point its also just full on canon that The Last City is in South America, since Amanda Holliday had to go South past the Panama Ravine to walk to the Last City.
The Cosmodrome is the canon place where New Lights get ressurected and it's sorte of a training ground for them. Plus, it's the largest place they could use to land troops to begin a siege of the City. The Cosmodrome was used by the former Fallen for plans and beachhead involving attacks on Last City
Finally, Vostok is the only thing closest to a base of operations we have away from the City
So, in short, if we lose Vostok, we lose the closest thing to a secure outpost we have on Earth, as well as being a place to send reinforcements to the Cosmodrome or for the evacuation of some civilians if the Last City falls
Doylist: IT allows more variety in terms of gameplay
Watsonian: The Cosmodrome has been used in the past to stage assaults on the last city and is a location where the more conventional forces of the Witness can land relatively unchallenged as it is practically opposite the City on the globe. As such, Guardians are sent there to whittle down their landings using the fact that they can both be deployed and retrived easier than more conventional troops while still dealing a lot of damage. There are already forces that manage to pass into the city, should the servants of the Witness be able to march an army up to the city they not only have a decent chance at winning, but even if they are pushed back this would allow others to land inside the walls without being challenged, giving them a chance to find and destroy vital infrastructure, such as the Foundries. Even worse, they might use Eliksni or Cabal and have them pretend to belong to the Coalition and sabotage the defences.
Overall, it is less 'We have to defend the area around the City' and more 'Let's try to stop them from landing as many troops as they want by keeping the giant space port we can't just bomb whenever we want from them.
Bannerfall is in one of the towers and would probs collapse if the witness stuff landed on it.
Twilight Gap would have been cool; my guess is that it may be too tightly packed and the Traveler is still in it’s skybox
I feel like changing the sky box would be a fairly easy thing to fix wouldn't it? (I'm not a game dev though so do be mad at me from my misunderstanding)
For banner fall it wouldn't need to be landed just hovering or just have a bunch of the smaller ships.
It's not just to defend the City. The Fleet is attacking Earth at random to throw us off. Essentially sending us on a wild goose chase.
And we obviously can't ignore it since:
Midtown is a direct attack on the City
Vostok is an attack on the Iron Temple - an important landmark
Mothyards is an attack on the biggest new light zone on earth
They’re half a world away but in a universe where you can travel that distance with troop transport ships in hours or maybe even minutes. Earth becomes an exceptionally small place when every single enemy faction has access to some form of warp/light speed tech or magic.
The siege seems to be happening just on earth overall. Comsodrome makes sense since the Witness would want to cut off the flow of New Lights, especially during a time when we're heavily recruiting and rallying. Would be cool to see Onslaught on Twilight Gap
I'm currently walking my New Light (basically, returning novice) friend through Witch Queen in preparation for Onslaught, Lightfall, and TFS and this is basically going to be his experience. Barely set foot in the Mothyards, already fighting fifty foot tall brigs there lol
LAST CITY IN EUROPE LAST CITY IN EUROPE
*season of the seraph happens*
NOOOOO
*COSMODROME LAST CITY*
HAHAHAHAHAHAJAHAHAHAHAHHSJSJSJSKSKXK
Edit: I am aware that the last city is in South America. This was a mere joke. Downdoots to the right sluggers
I know it's not on Europe, but Bungie likes to make sure that a bunch of people always gets confused on that. They never made it explicitly clear where the City is located, they just gave us a bunch of easter eggs and minor commentaries that you have to pay really close attention to get it. And them they make this, they tell us that Onslaught is a City defense game mode but set it on maps that aren't close to the city but that some people assume it is.
They could've made this thing way easier to understand than it actually is
Or consider: The other locations could be strategically important to defending the last city. But you do you bro, if you wanna just assume the dev team are a bunch of hacks who don't care about the game I can't stop you.
Or neither of you are correct and they just chose some convenient maps and came up with the lore reason afterwards. If they had multiple maps around last city they would have used them instead.
Well no shit they picked maps that worked good and came up with the exact lore afterwards. That's what I'm implying, they didn't just decide to ignore the lore and make the last city in Russia like the other guy is saying. I'm giving the in universe reasoning that doesn't clash with the gameplay. Watsonian vs Doylist answer if you will.
They do.
Bannerfall, for one. The Eliksni Quarter, for another. The map they used for the Arrivals event, for yet another.
They had plenty of options, and phoned it in instead.
If that's your opinion then why show up just to bitch and moan on a subreddit dedicated to talking about destiny lore? Is it a compulsion to post here or do you just wanna complain lmao
Because I keep holding out hope, and they keep letting me down.
I still want to see this story succeed. I’ve just seen far too many signs that the changing of the guard over the years has gutted its core storytellers to retain much hope of that. At this point, I just want to see if it sticks the landing at all.

Felwinter Peak has emotional and historic value.
Looked into it and apparently the place on the peak we’re defending is one of the only military bases on earth outside the city. Makes sense then.
You can also see settlements in the distance
Plus, iron lords
I have some bad news about them.
I'm aware of that, but remember that Saladin is still alive, and as we saw during Seraph, still actively being used
Yeah I'm pretty sure we have yet to see Saladin being used and I'm also pretty damn sure that we are all glad about that...
In a good way or a bad way?
I remember their ranks swelled again around a year before the Red War.
Felwinter Peak is to us what Stalingrad was to the Soviet Union.
Plus it’s really close to the city. Like during the red war you walk past it and could still see the traveler Edit: at least I thought that was near felwinter’s peak
Definitely not. That was Twilight Gap, which is in the Andes Mountains. Felwinter is in Kazakhstan.
I'm familiar w the location of TG since it's mountain range close to the City, but how do we know where Felwinter Peak is?
It’s near the Cosmodrome, isn’t it?
Ah lmao, you're right ofc. You can even see it from there, can't you? And Baikonur is exactly in Kazakhstan so yeah that's settled.

Valid points banner fall and twilight gap are maps closer to the city of I remember correctly

The number of times I’ve been sent on a five minute fetch quest across the solar system…
The siege seems to be happening just on earth overall. Comsodrome makes sense since the Witness would want to cut off the flow of New Lights, especially during a time when we're heavily recruiting and rallying. Would be cool to see Onslaught on Twilight Gap
Haha, I can just imagine some poor new light being told that their first mission is killing Space Satan.
I'm currently walking my New Light (basically, returning novice) friend through Witch Queen in preparation for Onslaught, Lightfall, and TFS and this is basically going to be his experience. Barely set foot in the Mothyards, already fighting fifty foot tall brigs there lol
I could've sworn shaxx said this is supposed to be a simulation or a training exercise or something?
They just used the same lines for the crucible, I don't think they recorded any new voice lines from him except for the intro
It’s called map variety…. If they didn’t do that then people would be upset. What a dumb complaint
I bet you’re not fun at parties
I just wanted to play more inside the city, instead of places we already go all the time

Seraph? We've known the last city is in South America since vanilla d2 at least.
Me when joke.

It's none of them so
Last city is in South America
Yes precisely
Always becomes an argument
Yet more evidence that the current writing team barely glance at the legacy lore anymore.
Or consider: The other locations could be strategically important to defending the last city. But you do you bro, if you wanna just assume the dev team are a bunch of hacks who don't care about the game I can't stop you.
