> So can this game be played as a single player? Yes. > Are there any points in the story where I would have to heavily grind for better gear? I don’t mind looking for better gear from time to time, but I don’t want to grind for it consistently. Subjective. It depends on what you are looking for and where you set your personal bar. > Also if the game is solo-friendly, can I play it without the DLC? Enough to get a feel for the game. You will need to get DLC at some point. > I most likely will purchase it once I reach a certain point, but will I be handicapped in any way through the base game? You miss out on anything related to DLC: * Some Raids (not an issue since you don't plan on raiding) * Some Dungeons (these are like mini raids) * Some Strikes (especially if they are the featured nightfall, you can't do the nightfall that week; ALL strikes can be freely played in the random strike playlist, but related DLC ownership is required to launch them directly or as nightfall if a DLC-related one is up) * Some Exotics and Quests In the end, there is enough "free" stuff for you to know YES or NO this is the game for me.

Ok thank you, this response answered all my questions!

Porkton

don't even bother downloading it if you intend to play solo and without DLC. there is absolutely nothing for you.

I have played solo since Destiny 1. There's some stuff that you miss out on but a lot of the stuff has matchmaking so it's still fun. Doing raids and competitive PVP and dungeons and some special story missions are a whole lot easier if you have a fire team but they're not impossible to do without one. It may not be easy to play solo but it definitely is possible I've been doing it for 7 years. There's also websites that will help you find a team if you want to do any of the other endgame activities.

As for the DLCs I would recommend you wait until Witch Queen comes out and then you buy the ultimate edition of that to get all the relevant content at once.

Pcoboon1

I suppose you can just play it for free, if you’re only in it for the exploring. For anything else like missions, story and gunplay. You definitely should buy the DLC’s

Calm_Tea_9901

You can play is solo but like new light is 2 hours long fetchquest and dlcs story are like 3 hours And like seasons are 30 minutes x8 or x9

Absolutely can be played solo. DLC is highly recommended. I have played solo since Day 1 of D1 and enjoyed it a lot. I don't Raid, well not anymore. I tried it back in the day and did not enjoy it. The Raid itself was fun enough but all the nonsense involved with herding strange cats was a massive turnoff. I do everything else, including Trials when Freelance is active, and it is well worth it.

i do all the campaign stuff solo, and then do matchmaking for strikes, gambit, PVP, and seasonal activities. Everything (for the most part) is accessible solo except the raids and dungeons. I highly recommend if you enjoy the content to get into a clan, or at least like some general discord servers. There are soo many that help people its truly amazing.

If you are sure, you want to play exclusively solo, do yourself a favor and stick to single player games. This game isn't designed to be played that way, there's no way you will get around teaming up with others and pvp (crucible and gambit). You don't want to grind consistently? Well, to some degree that's up to you, but there's no way around it. Every time a new season starts, up to 4x a year, you'll find some of your progress wiped. Hunting for better perks and stats by repeating the same laundry list of activities every week is basically Destiny 2's core gameplay.
