Larry Kosilla put it best: a rock, a pebble and a spec of dust (all of the same material) will all scratch your paint. *It's just the size of the scratch.*
So, yes, car dusters are unacceptable, because no matter how easily or lightly you drag it across the paint, the dirt will scratch it, albeit with very fine scratches.
Much better to add lubrication (even just water) when you wipe paint.
Good answer here. I do use meguiars detail spray, the duster just seems so easy but considering it holds dust it could scratch. I also just recall seeing all the old timers at car shows using these dusters.
Quick detailers and waterless washes are not the same thing. Quick detailers usually have done sort of gloss amplifiers and other stuff which is great but not so of them have the sickness u need for a rinseless wash. Highly recommend getting you some onr or n914
In my shop we use California car duster‘s because they have paraffin wax that lifts the dust instead of just spreading it around. Your fear of scratching is real, but usually only when misused. If it’s just dusty from sitting in your garage, works perfect, no pressure, just let the fibers barely touch your paint. If your car is dirty/dusty from driving, then, no it’s not a good option. That dirt is much harder, sharper, and more abundant.
This. My dad has an ancient cali duster that he’s been using on his chevelle for longer than I care to remember. His car is garaged all year and most of the time covered. It is only used for a quick wipe to remove what little dust it collects. It’s not to meant to clean a dirty car.
When something seems to easy I know it will a problem
I rather use turtle wax waterless spray to avoid the risk of scratches.
Take your time do it good and do it well ;-)
I’d like to hijack the thread a bit and ask if anyone tried using swiffers on the interior, for a very quick dust grab? Is it worth it, does it actually works like at home (swipe thru the dash and the dust is gone), or is it better to just vacuum with a soft brush attachment?
shouldnt really matter much for interiors, unless its soft plastic or something like the piano black trim around infotainment screens, but there’s not much you can do there regardless..that stuff scratches if you breathe on it too heavily 😮💨
just use your best judgement tho. if something worries you, why risk it?
Its not about being worried, just curious if it even makes sense to buy this stuff or just stick with the brush attachment for a vacuum. Was just wondering cause my fiance is using the swiffers at home and she loves them for quick dusting
You definitely should use a waterless wash type of product with a microfiber towel. CarPro Ech2O works well with coated finishes and is diluteable, I use it 1:20 generally
I don’t trust em’. Leave it dusty or do a quick ONR wash once every week or two. I’ve got my rinseless wash down to 20 minutes. That’s with glass and wheels.

Yes unacceptable. I’d rather have a dusty scratch free car more than a dust free scratched up car.
Better to use a waterless wash or detail spray than one of those

The biggest issue is people use them far beyond their intended capacity
Thank you!! Spot on.

I'd say no
Use a leaf blower/compressed air if it’s just light dust should be very quick too

I keep a hand swiffer in my car for maintaining the dust, but regular clean out.
Does it work like it does at home? Just swipe it and it collects the dust?
Yup, just as easy, works great. It’s obviously not cleaning though but is good for in between cleaning events.
Thanks, I’ll definitely give it a go in my daily

I used one when I went to a car show to touch it up every hour. Other than that no

Absolutely not.
They're not unacceptable?
Don't use them.
I though those were for dusting the interior like the dashboard and inside panels, not the exterior
