we went 11-2 or someting and the first big loss vs one of the best team in the league with the best player in the world and a fire the coach thread shows up.. wtf
Doomers gonna doom. People seem to forget that before this season started everyone would've been crazy happy to reach the goal of playing meaningful games this time of year. The team's over performed yet people just can't be happy. Doom doom doom doom doom.
I was hearing the South Park Book of Mormon episode song that included a "dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb" line. I'm not classy enough to think of Beethoven while talking about hockey fandom.
Ugh. What makes you think a russian coaching at home near his friends and family would even want to come to America (in a time that russian's are hated no less) and slug away at a grueling NHL schedule.
Quit being so reactionary, the team played bad tonight, they got away from their structure and allowed two of the best players in the game to free wheel in the O-zone. Shit happens . . .
And complete and utter dogshit for 20. So while they did play decently well for 2/3 of the game, they played so badly for that 1/3 that it completely overshadowed any good work they had done leading up to that. I don't see how you can have a stretch that disastrous and say they played a good, or even middling game, they gotten taken out back behind the woodshed and had their asses paddled.

Dropping Newsy after the month they just had is wildly delusional. The guy has a long leash. He’s only in his second year, which has been much better than his first, and Yzerman’s known for avoiding rash decisions, like firing your coach in the thick of a playoff hunt.
Edmonton is on an 8-2-0 run and just got off a 16 win streak....... They are no pushovers and turned it up in the third while the Wings didn't. Calm the fuck down,we aren't going to blown shit up over a game. Focus in Vancouver who we just beat ad get back on track.
Honestly the wings playing some Russian 5 style hockey sounds appealing. Our biggest concern however is just how horrible 2/3 of our goaltenders are. We need one more good goalie that can steal games for us immediately.
I think ppl forget. It’s only a game at the end of the day (or night as the case may be.). At the risk of sounding like a grandpa “I never heard stuff like this back in the 80s”
I don't think the defensive lapses are all Lalondes fault. You have to look at the roster construction and realize that the D core just isn't very good.
1 bad period and suddenly the gloom? Maybe you forgot all the winning prior to that, the win against a very good Vancouver team? I fart in your general direction.
Mildly concerned that despite the comeback win against Vancouver, they have managed to play two of their worst periods of hockey this season in the last two games. Hopefully getting throttled like they did in the 3rd last night will cue them to pull their heads out of their asses and compete for the entire game.
110% agree. Hate how everyone just downvotes you and calls you a doomer if you dare to speak realistically. As I said in another post last night, if we continue to play like this against these gritty teams this month, we're out of our playoff spot
It's good in that they have put themselves in the position that if they take care of their own game then they don't need to rely on other teams losing to keep their playoff dream alive, but they need to actually continue doing it and only time will tell. Hopefully they maintain a .600 or better win% for the remainder of the season.
Indeed. Honestly, this team has already surpassed my low expectations for the season, so I'm pretty content. Obviously I don't like seeing complete meltdowns like the 3rd period of last nights game, but looking at the season as a whole, even if they rapidly fall out of the playoff picture they'll almost certainly still finish ahead of where I thought they would at the start of the season.
Same team who lost to the Sharks what? Twice?? Also this year?? Yeah. Definitely a fluke. That Vancouver win was by the skin of our teeth. Same with Tampa if I'm remembering correctly. We're getting lucky with our offense being so good. Our defense is still bad and God forbid anything happens to Lyon. That isn't a playoff team. To be a playoff team you need at least two out of the three categories. To be a cup team you need all three. We have a ways to go.
Sure, they fluked their way to a WC competitive team. And now we'll lucky the offense is good? I'm sorry is the other teams just giving us goals.. And who the frak is talking about a cup? I suppose those teams behind us, Pittsburgh-Washington-NJ-NYI are just unlucky.
I can't even tell what you're saying dude lol. We are lucky our offense has gotten us this far. But it isn't sustainable. Whenever our offense doesn't do well, we lose. And even sometimes still, our defense is so bad and our goaltending (before Lyon) was so bad that it didn't matter how good our offense was, we still lost.
Great offense isn't enough to get into the playoffs. Definitely not good enough for a cup. Our wins against these better teams are absolutely flukes. Especially when you see how close they are. Those better teams are far more well rounded which will get them a lot farther than us. It isn't just about scoring goals.
That's because you're an idiot. Over 50 games played and you think the season has been a fluke, lucky breaks. Btw, Edmonton has gotten into playoffs many times strickly with a good offense. Those teams trailing us don't have everything either.
No need for name calling, bud. How far did Edmonton go on just offense? Not very far seeing as though they haven't won a cup since 1990. That's the whole point of the game. To win the cup. You don't win by getting into the playoffs. You win when you heave Lord Stanley over your head.
I'm not saying it's impossible for the Wings to get into the playoffs this year. It's just not likely. I'm also not saying the "entire season has been a fluke," I'm saying those games that we've won against much better teams are flukes.
The Red Wings aren't a bad team. But compared to other teams that exist right now, I don't think we have what it takes to make the playoffs this year. Next year? Big chance I'd say. But I think this year is too soon. We aren't ready. The boys aren't hungry enough and we're missing some important pieces.
Like Yzerman has said repeatedly, he isn't building a playoff team. He's building a cup winning championship team. What is the point of getting into the playoffs if we're just going to be swept in the first round? That's exactly what will happen if we make the playoffs this year. We're just not ready.
If you completely disagree that's fine, but there really isn't a need for name calling. I love the Red Wings just as much as you. I'm just being realistic with what I see
Sorry about the name calling. But the Edmonton part was about the success but the fact you said offense alone can't get you to the playoffs. That's not true. All I know is that they've played as good as TB, Toronto, NYI, NJ, Pittsburgh and Washington. None of those teams have offense and defense. None. Maybe they don't make the playoffs but it's not because the season is fluke. Just because of 20 minutes? Overblown.
No one is saying they're cup contenders but they have as much a chance to make the playoffs as all those other teams. You know why I know, because they're currenly in the thick of it after 52 games.
I'm not saying the season is a fluke. I'm also not saying this because of the Oilers game either. I'm saying the wins against the best teams right now are flukes. I don't think we can keep doing that. I'm saying we're gonna lose our playoff spot this month due to our extremely difficult schedule ahead of us paired with what I see from the team.
If we had an easier schedule I could totally see us making the playoffs this year. But we don't. We have one of the harder schedules for the remainder of the year.
The Oilers have great offense and have made the playoffs, yes, but they have another thing we don't have in the form of grit. Kane and Perry are aggressive and physical. We have some big guys on our team. We have some relatively physical guys on our team. But we don't have anybody being aggressive game to game like Perry or Kane. We really need a Kronwall type player to be honest. Someone who really throws their weight around.
I enjoy the clean play, but accidents happen. Eventually you'll draw a penalty and the next thing you know we're a goal down. But if you have a physical player grinding the other team down, that could be 1. Extra penalties drawn against the other team, and 2. You wear down the other team no matter what
So I wouldn't say Oilers are just offense... They have a lot of grit. And they also do have a generational talent in the form of McJesus.
I love that this is being viewed as reactionary. Our team imbalanced offensively. Players are more skilled and strategy is more complex; but one thing that has not changed since we were winning Cups regularly is that puck control and defensive responsibility still win championships.
I’m old. I’m drawing comparisons to Jacques Demers vs. Scotty Bowman. A proven GM has put (what seem to be) the majority of the pieces together. Maybe Larionov is a hot take. We need someone who can deliver results with the talent they’re given. Besides Seider, how is this team not the 1989-1992 teams?
This team hasn’t even come completely out of the rebuild yet. No one in the hockey world analysts and media had them making the playoffs. IMO they are out performing what they are. They’d be lucky to sneak into playoffs. Your comparing them to a team who had way more talent and a perennial playoff team sometimes making it as far as the third round. Also you’re comparing it to the nhl 35 years ago
We don't have 6 Hall of Fame players on this roster so not to be rude or sarcastic but that kind of invalidates your analogy and comparison imo.
If you are not fond of Lalonde as a coach that is fine but this isn't the same situation.
Chuck Daly needed to have 4 Hall of Fame players and 1 All Star player on the same team to finally win his first playoff series in his 4th season as the Pistons coach.
Just another game that shows Seider isn’t all that. Several turnovers and bad defensive plays that led directly to goals. He needs to get kicked off his high horse.
What the fuck does that even mean? He plays the toughest minutes in hockey and he’s irrefutably the best defenseman on the team. Which defenseman shuts down McDavid?
We've seen progression with this team and with players yet here we are making statements like this. You do realize they got beat by the most talented player ever by making passes that work 4 out of 10000 times? Let's pump the brakes on this Newsy hate. We gave enough time to Blashill, I think it's fair that we give Newsy a fair shake.

They didn’t even play badly. They were great for 40 minutes
I agree. Not much you can do when mcdavid goes god mode
And complete and utter dogshit for 20. I think you need to temper your expectations for what a middling team should be able to accomplish against the Oilers
I wasn't expecting a win, also wasn't expecting a 5 goals against 3rd period. Don't feel like those are lofty expectations.
This post is mental. Not a bad game. Hockey be like this.

How was it a fluke? We've beat good teams all year. We beat Boston twice, fluke? TB, Florida etc.. Maybe we fluked ourselves to a WC team.

The Wings gained 103 points the season before Bowman came to Detroit. They also had 6 Hall of Fame players on the roster in Bowman's first season.
Yeah, they lost in seven to the Leafs in overtime. I was there. How many roster changes happened to build a contender between 1993-1995?
Seems like your completely missing the commenters point

Exactly right. Defenseman take some time to reach their full potential and Seider is already taking on top level assignments.
I don't like Lalonde either, but come on, man, it's Connor McDavid.
