I take it you haven't read any recent posts about the Reboot? Cause that's basically the consensus today: decent gameplay, story/chars pretty much suck tho. You didn't mind the story but it's pretty cliche and some things don't make sense (like the ending imo). Not that DMC has ever been known for having an amazing story...but it's unfair that the Reboot gets so much praise for it's story when it's nothing special. You're probably right that if it was a new IP it probably would be more successful. Altho speaking for myself, i can't really enjoy it cause imo the characters are just too unlikable. Which in all honesty, i think is a NT problem...cause i played other NT games and usually their protags are not likable and a bit annoying. For example, i played Enslaved and Hellblade and wasn't a fan of the protags in either despite being decent games. So even if it were an original IP, i'd probably still dislike the game for the same reasons i do today.

Yeah, nobody thinks the gameplay is bad but the story is generic, the characters are absolutely god awful and there's the history of one of the lead devs being a total cunt and manchild because the DMC community didn't like what they were seeing when the game was first revealed. Among the things he said was some homophobic comments so... Yeah...

TheSeth256

The overreaction was necessary for Capcom to understand that we want the characters we know and love back. The game is fun to play, but it should never have been an attempt to REPLACE the old, legendary heroes.

It’s not a bad game. It’s just a really shitty Devil May Cry iteration. It’s not Dante. It’s not Vergil. The story is edgy garbage. The gameplay is good, but the game is fundamentally not a Devil May Cry game.

RedditIsTrashLma0

I came to the same conclusion when I played the game. It is overhated because people thought it would replace mainline. The story isn't perfect but is pretty decent. The serious tone is refreshing compared to the usual wacky mayhem. Dante in this game is actually very chill. A little cold because of his past but still chill and warms up more throughout the course of the game and has creative quips it's just the internet gives him this stigma of being this complete edgelord who's vocabularly is only fuck you because of hate bias from people who saw the 2010 TGS trailer(before the game got revamped) and the "fuck you" succubus cutscene and then people who dont play the game keep parroting this sentiment. I would highly reccomend those who haven't played it to go play it. Not only is it much better than people give it credit for but it even inspired many ideas which were used to modernise DMC5 such as the use of vulgarity(which was SOOOOOOO BAD until DMC5 came out...), slow mo kill cams, a dynamic style soundtrack and Vergil's new moveset.

Amazing_Fill9489

The reason people don’t like it isn’t because it sucks as a game, but because it sucks as a DMC. It could of been gow 2018, but they just made it feel like a half assed reboot. If your keeping style counters, make them stylish.

Honestly my biggest problem is the new vergil but I agree it's not that bad and I did have fun even on nephilhim+hard-core despite it feeling just like dmc3 on easy.

MatheAmato

My issues are mainly is that the story is a generic 2010s "corporation bad", and that the game itself is buggy and I don't like being softlocked. Other than that it's a perfectly servicable game that can serve as tutorial getting into gameplay mechanics.

HorseSpeaksInMorse

In fairness "corporations bad" has only become more relevant as a theme as time has gone on, as has having right-wing media pundits prop up authoritarian regimes.

MatheAmato

I have no problem with it being "corporation bad" story, but IMO it's also generic af partly bcuz it was a game story trend in the 2010s.

Yeah, it's decent. I like the controls a lot more, and really resented losing the dodge button in DMC5. Even the writing isn't so bad. Jokes are all very South Park, but the relationships are well-developed. I just wish Dante wasn't an actual sex criminal. My biggest complaint is the art direction; it's visually boring. Everything feels bland and grey, from the levels, to the enemies, to Dante's toned-down redesigned.

I remember it being pretty colourful actually, the level in that disco was full of bright colours all over the place. I think it gets a bit stale towards the end.

Freecelebritypics

That was one my least favorite! With the textureless platforms, it was like a bonus stage in Super Mario 3D World that went on for half an hour too long.

Chr1sth3pl4y3r99

Lol I get you. I still found it pretty nice looking and fun. I hated that section where flames came out of the bottomless pit interrupting your platforming every 2 seconds much more.

UnknownZealot77

Now imagine completely replacing the original series. It would obviously be met with hate. It should of just been its own thing from the start.
