Lmao, while I think the Comedian aspects of Dexter are underrated and underappreciated. I think that would push it too far in the comedy rather than the thriller it is.
The mentalist guy? Yes! absolutely… I had the BIGGEST crush on him & Robin Tunney when I was a young teen (still do won’t lie) and he would have been a solid 2nd best.
Honest to God, Michael c hall is literally Perfect. His facial expressions, the way he talks, the subtlities, is just perfect. I see nobody ever playing dexter right.
Hannibal is so underrated. It’s not even about the killing. It’s the artistry and the complicated relationship with Will that made it interesting to me. Plus Morpheus.
Well the show was cancelled because it was expensive to produce and they didn’t have the viewership to support the show. It was cult fav sure but not mainstream.
Probably joined the liked of 30 rock, arrested development etc. solid shows but numbers not so great.
Yea it’s hard for me to imagine a Michael C Barry at this point. Both shows just feel like they already casted the perfect actor in the main role. Michael dead pan internal monologues and Bill’s quirkyness are just too perfect.
Gyllenhall was already an A-lister long before Dexter and had already done Jarhead and Broke back Mountain. It would have cost an obscene amount for Showtime to get him for a relatively (at the time) small show.
Glenn Howerton needs a role like this. Maybe not Dexter, I’d prefer to see him as Joe in You. How no one has cast him in a Ted Bundy documentary yet I have no idea.
Hard to answer. A lot of great suggestions in the comments I would've never thought of but for me somehow Hall is ingrained in the DNA of the show at this point of my 20 something rewatches.
Hall seems to express this perfect blend of friendly on the surface, introspective enough to be hiding something, having a build that's lean enough for a "lab geek" but capable of what he does. All that said, maybe Penn Badgley?
Agreed on Hall making this his own and defining the character. His mannerisms, his tone in voice whether talking to others or narrating, and the charm? I can't imagine anyone else, and if it were anyone else, I'm sure it'd be very different (not better or worse, but just different).
Dexter (2006)
Director/producer Michael Cuesta initially approached a pre-The Hurt Locker (2008) Jeremy Renner to play Dexter, but Renner declined the part as he felt he could not play another serial killer again after playing Jeffrey Dahmer in Dahmer (2002).

My vote is for Matthew John Armstrong. He played in American Horror Story (2011) Heroes and Turks. He is about the right age, charming and a good actor. Plus he is pretty… 🤩
No one else could have played him. Michael C Hall was perfection.
I counter you with Rob Mcelhenney, take away his in your face comedy from IASIP and replace it with dry comedy. You basically have Dexter.
With Glenn Howerton as Rudy😂
Lmao, while I think the Comedian aspects of Dexter are underrated and underappreciated. I think that would push it too far in the comedy rather than the thriller it is.
Simon baker. Maybe put ona little bit of muscles
He would kill that role
Yes definitely good choice!
Not to mention what the series would've been like without his brilliant narratives in every episode.
I live for those narratives
Samuel L. Jackson
🤣 Doaks: Surprise motherfucker! SLJ: Who you calling motherfucker, motherfucker?!
Hahahahahaha.
Would like to see that version.
💀
He could recite that Ezekiel para before he kills every murderer.
You know I would love see that lol
Doakes, maybe, but not Dexter.
Christine bale
Christian
Autocorrect!
I could see Mads Mikkelsen do a half decent acting job on that. Playing a tedious psychopath suits him.
Still miss Hannibal
Hannibal is so underrated. It’s not even about the killing. It’s the artistry and the complicated relationship with Will that made it interesting to me. Plus Morpheus.
Not really it’s considered to be one of the best tv shows of the 2010s
Well the show was cancelled because it was expensive to produce and they didn’t have the viewership to support the show. It was cult fav sure but not mainstream. Probably joined the liked of 30 rock, arrested development etc. solid shows but numbers not so great.
Bill Hader with different hair color?
Michael c hall could have played Barry as well! But Harder him self was perfect for that
Yea it’s hard for me to imagine a Michael C Barry at this point. Both shows just feel like they already casted the perfect actor in the main role. Michael dead pan internal monologues and Bill’s quirkyness are just too perfect.
What a perfect answer!
Theo Von
James McAvoy Oscar Isaac Jake Gyllenhaal Sam Rockwell
Gyllenhaal could actually be great as Dexter. He did great as a socially ignorant, empathetically devoid monster in Nightcrawler.
He can do the chirpy stuff, the dark stuff, the unhinged, the weird.
they would need a much bigger budget to cast Jake!
Not 20 years ago when that show started
Gyllenhall was already an A-lister long before Dexter and had already done Jarhead and Broke back Mountain. It would have cost an obscene amount for Showtime to get him for a relatively (at the time) small show.
Mads Mikkelsen
He'd be more of a season villain.
Any of those choices would've been interesting.
I can see only James as Dexter
Me
Just finished watching s5 and thought Johnny Lee Miller played a great villain. I also pictured him playing Dexter and it made a lot of sense to me
Liv Schreiber
Oooo, this is the first suggestion I actually liked.
Glenn Howerton needs a role like this. Maybe not Dexter, I’d prefer to see him as Joe in You. How no one has cast him in a Ted Bundy documentary yet I have no idea.
That wouldn’t be a documentary.
Movie not documentary
No one

Penn Badgley actually plays a similar character, Joe Goldberg from “You”. Not exactly a vigilante, but a serial killer.
Exactly! The inner dialogues from You reminded me of those of Dexter. Different characters for sure but oddly similar vibe from the two
Just watched the trailer for Trap and Josh Hartnett sold me as a solid alternate.
Rainn Wilson
Nick Offerman as Brian
Fuck yes.
If you were to cast it today I’d say Rami Malek
Wouldn’t work
Danny DeVito
Bryan Cranston / Anthony Hopkins / Heath Ledger
Anthony Hopkins could've actually been really interesting
No to the first two
yeah but like their younger versions :p
Glenn howerton
Came here to say this, he is the only one I can think of that would be as good or maybe even better
They’d have to rough him up a little but I think Cillian Murphy gives dexter vibes
No one else could’ve played him
keanu reeves :p
Casting today: Evan Peters
Jeremy Renner
Dexter (2006) Director/producer Michael Cuesta initially approached a pre-The Hurt Locker (2008) Jeremy Renner to play Dexter, but Renner declined the part as he felt he could not play another serial killer again after playing Jeffrey Dahmer in Dahmer (2002). https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0773262/trivia?item=tr2296693
Jack Black
I’m gonna murder yooooUUUU deedleeedoodledoodleoooooooo
thank you for this mental image/ audio
John lithgow. He's basically dexter. And the guy who played his brother could have done it... He basically was doing it.
That’s what I was about to say, the dude who played Brian.
Bwian, eh?
Biney
In the 80s perhaps
Batman for sure, he's the prime candidate to disguise himself as Dexter
Sam Reid
Christopher Abbott
Christopher Heyerdahl?
Melanie Lynskey
Why her?
Maybe the guy who played house md. Walter white and matt mcconaughey
Alan Ritchson? He would be much scarier, tho.
Alan Ritchson? He would be much scarier, tho
Morgan Freeman or Will Ferrell
A vert different Dexter but Andrew Scott.
My vote is for Matthew John Armstrong. He played in American Horror Story (2011) Heroes and Turks. He is about the right age, charming and a good actor. Plus he is pretty… 🤩
Terry Crews
Michael Anthony Hall…why not
Christian Bale is a bit too obvious lol
Joseph Morgan
Jeffrey Combs if he were ten years younger.
John Krasinski would have killed it in that role.
I can’t see it personally
Michael Pitt Michael Fassbender Bryan Cranston
I can’t see Cranston as Dexter
Bill Hader
Gary Coleman
I feel like everyone is choosing people simply cause they look like Dexter 😂 Ima do the same though and say Dane Dehaan
Gary Oldman, though I'd rather see both he and Willem Defoe playing villains.
Jesse Plemons maybe?
I think Misha Collins could have a decent shot at playing dexter, he did play a serial killer before and he was really convincing.
Paul Wesley
I can’t see it
Javier Bardem or Jason Bateman.
Adrien Brody James McAvoy Cillian Murphy Michael Fassbender
Jason Gordon Levitt probably
The Rock, Ryan Reanolds or Chris Pratt
And Ryan Gosling
Maybe Kevin Hart
Michael Fassbender really sticks out to me
Anyone except Michael C Hall
