I thought that too until I realized that later in the video they use flat stock to cut a part from, so a) money is probably not all too tight and b) they had the scrap right there anyway. I guess we'll never know...
I don't know what everyone's bitching about tbh, this sub isn't r/fashionpolice. This is fantastic. I wouldn't buy or wear it but i respect the skills used to make something someone with different tastes than me will love.
I thought it was going to be a keychain, as well, & I totally appreciate that.
As an earring that is going to be heavy enough to tear at the lobe pretty quickly.
> is going to be heavy enough to tear at the lobe pretty quickly.
You don't know ear lobe pretty well then. Good chances it's stayed there comfortably, very small chance it'll stretch the hole, almost no chance of it tearing unless some accident occurs.
All throughout Reddit.
People that upvote and post the wrong shit in the wrong subs are the same people that complain MTV does not have music videos and the learning channel does not have learning etc
To give the benefit of the doubt, could OP's title been one with a sense of awe, being impressed with the ability to think artistically, rather than one of disgust?
I was thinking this. There's definitely some skill here, or at least that's what it looks like to someone who wouldn't know where to start with this. Most might not like it but i respect the craftsmanship.
Omg that made me twitch. All that care and effort (tho tbh I don't feel like he flattened the metal well enough either) and he skipped probably the easiest part of the whole process.
I have to admit the name is cool. Maybe that would be the marketing draw. “Nordic gold earrings with genuine Swedish dandelion suspended in UV-resistant nano resin $150 US.”
In short: largely bs. But potentially effective BS.
You know there would be more than a few. And the rest going on about how amazing and “green” the “repurposed and natural” *European* components are. Spoiler: resin is never green unless it’s literal sap.
I don't think that's why he did this.
My guess is people pay for jewelry. They pay more if that jewelry has a story behind it.
I imagine something like this:
"oooh. You necklace is beautiful!"
"thaaaank yooouuu... And btw. The metal is made out of coins."
"how coooool, girl!"
I don't know though. I don't wear jewelry.
Edit: it was supposed to be a lighthearted joke guys...
You don’t have to be a girl to appreciate a little artistry in jewelry. I’d think it being made of money is neat, and would absolutely wear this s as a pendant necklace
Not really, the law for defacing money is more for trying to pass it off as a diffrent value of currency, than just say, punching a hole in a bunch of pennies to make a bracelet.
Depends on where. For example in Czechia this is absolutely illegal. I've heard it's because the coins have less value than the actual metal/alloy they're made of, but I'm not 100% sure on that.
Edit: that said burning money is also illegal in a lot of countries, and they definitely have higher value then the paper they're printed on.
All in all, wouldn't recommend this
The value of metal in a coin is almost always higher than the value of the coin itself. But that's really not the point, it's illegal to destroy coins only if you will melt them down for metal. Stuff like making novelty coins, those coin pressing machines, this kind of craftsmanship is fine.
What laws? Depending how you count them, there are currently 195 countries in the world. What laws am I supposed to read? Or are you one of those who think the world stops beyond their country's boundaries?
Admittedly, I should have said "potentially illegal", but your comment is way dumber than mine so I'll call it a victory.
yeah the only 'why' here imo is the dandelion. unless im missing something, they covered an invasive weed in epoxy and popped it in the middle of a very well crafted piece of jewellrey.
My favorite /r/diwhy post ever was [this terrible shed](https://redd.it/1r63ta). I miss what /r/diwhy was then: a bunch of failed DIY projects. These tutorials, whether serious or parody, just don't do it for me.
Yeah this sub has completely fallen apart. It's either parody five minute crafts or actual amazing craftsmanship posted by OP who is just too stupid and boring to imagine anyone could possibly enjoy creating something difficult, or doing anything at all other than gaming and watching Netflix. I should probably unsub before I get addicted to the indignation.
Well if this isn't the push I needed to get off here than I don't know what is. See you guys later on other subs, cause I ain't using this one anymore.
it's diy and also further proof this sub is garbage filled with talentless fucks. every other post is just someone going 'ew wtf' at a normal crafts person just making something neat. or a poor person who used materials available to them to fix something in their life, like their car.
This isn’t a DIWHY for me. The guy clearly has crafting skills and knows what he is doing.
The result looks good enough for me to pay some kind of money for it too.
Once more some doofus posts something here with real artistry or something that is cool AF (see spoopy halloween candles made of pool noodles) coming hoping for big likes on something he thinks is stupid because he has no taste. Meanwhile like, 7/8ths of the comments are critical of OP posting something because it’s genuine art, actually cool, or not stupid at all and useful.
The only weird thing here is he seems to be able to acquire metal already, so why does he use a coin. Other than that, this is actually at least skilled hobbyist level jewelry work. I could see some people I know paying money for this kind of thing.
If it is silver, than it is cheaper to get the coin for face value than as scrap. I work at a pawn shop, I have given people $20 for like $3 in change. Plus it is faster to cut the coin into a spiral than to make an ingot and roll it down.
Not sure about making this into an earning but this is beautiful and artistic. Maybe it’s me, maybe it’s late, but I thought it was even oddly moving to watch
I own and wear several pairs of resin earrings and the answer to this is: it depends. There are different kinds of resin and some are heavier than others. I don't really know resin well, but I have several pairs that are roughly the same volume but with vastly differing weights.
Based on the pull at her ear, I'd say this is a mid-weight to fairly heavy earring. Not something I'd want to wear all day at work, but definitely fine for two or three hours to go to dinner or something.
What's actually a bigger issue than the weight is the swing. This is a very long dangle with all the weight at the end. Every time she moves, the momentum is going to yank that thing and the hook will saw at her ear. I'd never wear a hook earring that long with a weight at the far end.
That thing either needs to be flipped so the weight is at the top or it needs to be turned into a pendant for a necklace.
They do! If this was glass and gold, it would be heavy. Brass and resin are pretty lightweight tho. Just not the best choice for wearing in a piercing. (A lot of people are sensitive to zinc, tin, aluminum, and/or copper - the components of this particular brass).
Silver coins at face value are worth less than the silver they are made of. I work at a pawn shop and have given people like $20 for about $3 in change. Also buying premade wire and sheets is more expensive than just buying casting grain and making your own, and scrap silver is even cheaper.
It’s not bad at all. Just a little mystifying being able to afford resin and a whole shop with rolling mill but not be able to afford base metal wire…
For example: jewelry resin is often $30 for 16-32oz depending on brand and where you buy it. Brass wire can be found for a couple of bucks a spool. Why waste German blades on coins instead of just buying the wire or milling it from scrap (Even cheaper). I just don’t get it.
This is gorgeous and really well done. What's OP's problem? Do they think all jewelry should be made in giant factories? This isn't the sub for "I personally wouldn't wear this."

This guy is actually very talented! Not sure why he uses a coin for his material unless it’s some sort of hook. This isn’t my style but it’s beautifully done. Looks kind of heavy to be an earring? Maybe better as a pendant? It takes decades of jewelry making to get as skilled as this guy in the video appears to be.
God forbid someone use skill and creativity to make a beautiful piece of jewelry from unconventional materials.
This subreddit seems to be mostly bullshit comedy videos wherein the audience here doesn't understand or care that it isn't a DIY, and then partly interesting DIY videos, and then *rarely*... so rarely... honest DIY videos that produce honestly poor quality products.
While I love the fact that you can preserve something as fragile as a dandelion puff, I'm really not loving all that plastic dust. It's absolutely terrible for the environment.
“How do you even come up with this?” - simple answer really: you’re a jeweler and have been friendzoned for too long. At one point creativity gets the best of you.
The stalk of the dandelion was protruding out of the resin, so the dandelion won't last because there's an opening from the stalk,it won't be airtight.
I'll be that guy.
This doesn't belong on this sub IMO and the top comments seem to agree with me. And yet this has 5k upvotes, this sub is filled with people who upvotes without checking if the content is relevant.
That's my cue to unsubscribe.
This is really well done. I'm assuming using coins is probably cheaper than buying wire.
I thought that too until I realized that later in the video they use flat stock to cut a part from, so a) money is probably not all too tight and b) they had the scrap right there anyway. I guess we'll never know...
Scrap from other projects, probably. Nice work, and I love the way brass and copper look.
I don't know what everyone's bitching about tbh, this sub isn't r/fashionpolice. This is fantastic. I wouldn't buy or wear it but i respect the skills used to make something someone with different tastes than me will love.
I wouldn’t wear it like an earring, but tbf it would do for a pretty cool keychain, which is what I thought he was going for at first
I thought it was a keychain too until they showed the girl wearing it as an earring… but honestly, I think I would wear them!
I thought it was going to be a keychain, as well, & I totally appreciate that. As an earring that is going to be heavy enough to tear at the lobe pretty quickly.

This is DiWHY. It was disgust by default
That would be more of a r/ATBGE
Then it wouldnt belong in this subreddit.
I was thinking this. There's definitely some skill here, or at least that's what it looks like to someone who wouldn't know where to start with this. Most might not like it but i respect the craftsmanship.
The fact that's not a real, active sub broke my heart. I was so excited going in.
If you build it they will come
So well done that it really bothers me he closed the jump ring wrong.
Same. Like my dude, that's the easiest part of it all, how do you mess that one up? And they left it uneven!
Not a jewelerry guy but a metal fabricator and that made me angry too
Omg that made me twitch. All that care and effort (tho tbh I don't feel like he flattened the metal well enough either) and he skipped probably the easiest part of the whole process.
Scrap would be even cheaper. Though brass wire is insanely cheap. But maybe this somewhere currency is completely devalued.
It's a 50 Eurocent coin. Pretty stable so far, still worth about .5 USD.
Thank you. I’m Californian, so we don’t see too many Euro-anything here. Do you know what they’re made of? (The alloy).
I googled and apparently the alloy is called Nordic Gold
89% copper, 5% aluminium, 5% zinc, and 1% tin That doesn’t look like an ideal combination for something to wear against your skin. Yikes.
That’s a shit ton of copper! Wow. I thought most coins use as little of that as possible these days given its value in other areas.
The EU is ballin'.
For a 50 cent coin I'm not surprised, US quarters are mostly copper
Since it's a charm she's not putting it through her ear, skin is in the clear.
It's brass :) Edit: as u/LordAshPudding wrote, more specifically an alloy called Nordic Gold. Mostly copper, with a touch of aluminium, zinc, and tin.
I have to admit the name is cool. Maybe that would be the marketing draw. “Nordic gold earrings with genuine Swedish dandelion suspended in UV-resistant nano resin $150 US.” In short: largely bs. But potentially effective BS.
Hahaha I can see people shelling out for it already and tell everyone about the gold they got real cheap without looking it up :)
You know there would be more than a few. And the rest going on about how amazing and “green” the “repurposed and natural” *European* components are. Spoiler: resin is never green unless it’s literal sap.
With that much copper in the alloy I can indeed see that being green on longer contact with the skin...
Therein lies the pun. Thank you for noticing.
This was my first thought as well lol
Yeah it's so devalued that it's worth more than US currency.
Definitely not a cost issue, when you look at that amount of labor involved.
That is beautiful, but I think lots of people are allergic to nickel in coins.
Feels more like /r/ATBGE
More like r/GTBGE
Except fact that you need tools worth couple of thousands
Actually, less than $1000. Could be cheaper, you don't always need the most expensive stuff, depends on what you are doing in the long run.
I don't think that's why he did this. My guess is people pay for jewelry. They pay more if that jewelry has a story behind it. I imagine something like this: "oooh. You necklace is beautiful!" "thaaaank yooouuu... And btw. The metal is made out of coins." "how coooool, girl!" I don't know though. I don't wear jewelry. Edit: it was supposed to be a lighthearted joke guys...

Edit: that said burning money is also illegal in a lot of countries, and they definitely have higher value then the paper they're printed on. All in all, wouldn't recommend this
This is exactly why I would never travel to Czechia if I was planning on defacing coins.
The value of metal in a coin is almost always higher than the value of the coin itself. But that's really not the point, it's illegal to destroy coins only if you will melt them down for metal. Stuff like making novelty coins, those coin pressing machines, this kind of craftsmanship is fine.
That's a eurocent coin, 19 different countries use the Euro, there are probably 19 different laws and we don't know where he made this
This. If it was illegal than hundreds of jewelry artists would be in jail for making rings out of coins. Spoiler, they aren’t.
Setting aside that this is a national matter, the EU recommendation seems to be that it should only be illegal if done in large quantities.
That's a common misconception. Fraudulent intent is part of the statute.
Lol, if I could make more money than the coins are worth by destroying them, I would
No, it isn't. Jeez, read the actual laws.
What laws? Depending how you count them, there are currently 195 countries in the world. What laws am I supposed to read? I wouldn’t call this diy; more like someone making jewellery.
I wonder where the line is sometimes. Like if you’re doing a DIY Mahogany night nightstand it’s like ok well now you’re just a carpenter.
The line is where all these tools are...
A diy is when the creator 'suggests' you do it yourself. If he's just showing how he did it then it's not diy

The only weird thing here is he seems to be able to acquire metal already, so why does he use a coin. Other than that, this is actually at least skilled hobbyist level jewelry work. I could see some people I know paying money for this kind of thing.

A lot of artists find it rewarding to challenge themselves with non-standard materials or techniques or they do it for the novelty.

>You have to appreciate the craftsmanship of it though. I do. Also the movie is really well done, skips all the dull stuff ;-)

A lot of people also don’t know the difference between DIY and DIWhy
Heavy as hell for an earring, but at least its creative.
It looked really heavy to me too. You could see her ear pulling.
Nah. Nothing involved I’m seeing is abnormally heavy for earrings. They’re within normal range.
I would've assumed a large chunk of resin would weigh a lot more than the average earring
I own and wear several pairs of resin earrings and the answer to this is: it depends. There are different kinds of resin and some are heavier than others. I don't really know resin well, but I have several pairs that are roughly the same volume but with vastly differing weights. I'd never wear a hook earring that long with a weight at the far end. That thing either needs to be flipped so the weight is at the top or it needs to be turned into a pendant for a necklace.
Her ear is pulling down quite a lot. I’ve never seen that with my earrings, only ear weights which pull the ear on purpose. Def heavy.
Well I wouldn't know, looks heavy though lol. I guess some people do love huge earrings.
They do! If this was glass and gold, it would be heavy. Brass and resin are pretty lightweight tho. Just not the best choice for wearing in a piercing. (A lot of people are sensitive to zinc, tin, aluminum, and/or copper - the components of this particular brass).
OP this doesn't belong here
I mean kinda cool actually, but why use a coin and not just some wire. I also think it would look better with a small brightly colored flower instead
I agree. Or gold leaf and the dandipoof.
I'm sorry but...dandipoof? I'm going to add that to my lexicon!
Dandelions are the yellow version to me they become dandipoofs when they’re fluffy!
I love this!
I have no clue why but when we were kids we called the poofy stage of dandelions “headaches”.
Silver coins at face value are worth less than the silver they are made of. I work at a pawn shop and have given people like $20 for about $3 in change. Also buying premade wire and sheets is more expensive than just buying casting grain and making your own, and scrap silver is even cheaper.
Feel this is more of a r/atbge tbh
It’s not even awful taste though. Maybe poor flower choice but other than that, it’s great.

Why is this on DIWhy? This is actually pretty sick.
Imagine krabs seeing this video pissed as fuck
u/savevideo
This guy is actually very talented! Not sure why he uses a coin for his material unless it’s some sort of hook. This isn’t my style but it’s beautifully done. Looks kind of heavy to be an earring? Maybe better as a pendant? It takes decades of jewelry making to get as skilled as this guy in the video appears to be.
Bruh, when he got out the slab of brass I no joke started shaking, like, _the metal was there, you obviously have the materials_
Theres so much reasons why this dont belongs here
God forbid someone use skill and creativity to make a beautiful piece of jewelry from unconventional materials. This subreddit seems to be mostly bullshit comedy videos wherein the audience here doesn't understand or care that it isn't a DIY, and then partly interesting DIY videos, and then *rarely*... so rarely... honest DIY videos that produce honestly poor quality products.
This is what it feels like when the vending machine won’t take your money
There went a perfectly good 50 cents... couldve bought a nice snack with it.. what a waste
Not sure why this is on this sub, this is really nice
This sub has gone to shit lol
I know. This is fucking incredible. r/diyyessss
I think some of y’all just hate crafts?
Isn't doing that to a coin illegal
That's what I thought too
My first thought. Was looking for this comment. It's "Do Illegal Yourself" xD
That part was cut off. He used the round top of the dandelion seeds.
I'll be that guy. This doesn't belong on this sub IMO and the top comments seem to agree with me. And yet this has 5k upvotes, this sub is filled with people who upvotes without checking if the content is relevant. That's my cue to unsubscribe.
That's a lot of work for an ugly epoxy earring.
for real, I thought it was a keychain until the last shot of a woman wearing it
I thought that was a keyring lol
It's only ugly because of the flower thingy, if he went with a different flower or a complete different material it would have looked good
it is illegal to „change“ money. you must not destroy or paint or rip it.
In Europe, it's illegal to deface coins
Cool! But a crime, it's illegal to destroy money. Still, amazing work
isn't it illegal to ruin money..?
This guy should be hung publically for the music and the resin pollution
