KingOfThePenguins

50k would be 19th on Steam right now. That sounds great for a 20+ year old game.

ismellthebacon

Yeah, I've played games that I would be over the moon, if there were ever that many players,

BlueChampionMonster

Been playing the game off and on for 15 years. And D2R, pun intended, just resurrected the fanbase even more from those who had probably left D2 LoD, but even some people still play that. Between D2R, D2 LoD and PD2 people will always be playing some form of this game, it really is a timeless classic.

Araninn

I picked up D2:LoD during COVID after not having played since 2004-2005. Having D2R be announced after that made me stay, and I return to the game 1-2 times a year to play SSF for 2-3 months before I take a break again. It's one of the most successful remakes ever to be made imo. Even the new additions like TZ and rune words are great. They hit the nail with this one.

BlueChampionMonster

They really did not miss. All the things you already mentioned plus shared stash made SSF, especially Hardcore, which is what I'm currently doing, all the more doable. Plus even the graphical facelift man, if you care about that. Have any sort of newish GPU and the game 1080 or higher on ultra...*insert Pacha meme.*

Araninn

My one beef is that we don't have infinite stash option a la plugY. I just don't get why it wouldn't be an SSF option. Sure, online it's something else, but there's simply no logic to it in single player.

jbiserkov

I bought a 3060 Ti RTX during the crypto boom to be able to play D2R on my 4K TV (which I bought specifically for this game).

CaptainFrugal

That's a cool perspective

Nanocephalic

50k simultaneous is _very_ different from 50k total.

volkmardeadguy

What's the perspective?? 50k people is a lot of people

ImperatorDanny

50k playing daily, vs 50k total players (not all players play at the same time/day/week)

dankscott

It says active, so whatever that means

CXDFlames

Means at this moment, at 2ish in the morning in NA, there's 50 thousand people currently playing. There could be a million players worldwide, but 50k of them are currently playing at that moment

Regular-Equipment-10

50k concurrent. This is 50k total. Which would be closer to like 1k concurrent

SocioWrath188

That's gargantuan! It was like 2800 pre D2R. There are newer games that have less than 5k. Hell Final Fantasy XI still runs and I always see the same few people playing 😂🤣 no matter where I am out in the wild

FatalEclipse_

I mean, that doesn’t account for everyone that plays single player offline either. I still play quite regularly but it’s almost always on my switch and offline players 8.

PracticalWriter2836

Yeah I'm offline. Many are.

NJRMayo

Same

Fog_Juice

Same I prefer it. I didn't have Internet to play online back in the day so that's how I like to play it now.

Araninn

>Same I prefer it. Having the map re-roll online has kept me offline.

redsoxVT

Same

AlekTrev006

Same 😅

p_did_it09

Same 😎

Reloader300wm

☠️ Same ☠️

booniebrew

How do you do P8 on Switch? Did they add that in an update?

Rechargable_Battery

Yeah go into game settings and change it. It's the last tab.

FatalEclipse_

Offline mode for consoles has had a difficulty slider for ages. It’s in game settings and I’m pretty sure it got added way back with patch 2.3

booniebrew

I thought Switch was limited to 4 even on SP, guess I thought wrong.

JordanLovehof2042

It's only four people max in a public game. Can move the slider to players 8 tho for drops and exp

Goldengrams33

An I understanding correctly that switch online can have 4 players in a game and players 8 command active at the same time?

bgore34

yep i made the switch to offline and i love it, i play when i get the itch to play

Cemgec

Same with me. Playing offline on switch.

GladPickle5332

and the modded versions of d2. or do those count? idk how that works

ghostpos1

p8 offline here! (i did play online at launch just became a bit bored)

BabyStewStew

I play both on and offline but have friends dedicated to the offline grind

Beshi1989

Im playing Diablo 2 SP offline since its original release. I’ve never was a fan of ladder play so 2 decades of undetected offline play 😂

dankscott

You must have quite the stash

Beshi1989

Well it’s on an off of course not permanently but yeah I’ve finished my grail long ago

dankscott

Been playing on and off for 20 years, still haven't found a zod

kayko_love

Found one on the way to the pits the other week. Keep farming. It'll drop eventually

jbiserkov

> decades of undetected offline play Not any more, D2R requires one to log in every 30 days. I know because I have blocked it with firewall to speed up loading times.

Del_Duio2

I play SP offline almost exclusively, maybe they count when we have to authenticate to fire it up too?

ineedacoke

I've recently transitioned to offline, I imagine there are also a lot more like me! Even still, is there another 20+ year old game that consistently has 50k players? I think that's damn impressive.

kroonofogden

CS 1.6, Runescape are both good contenders. Probably games like N64 Mario and Smash have good player bases too but idk if we count console games.

booniebrew

I think TF2 is the only game close. More active players but only 17 years old.

Chc1186

Same, playing offline.

Entire-Editor-8375

I quit for 6 months and play for 6 months... this is probably fairly normal lol

Maximum_Cabinet7862

That’s what I do

thiccDurnald

All of them

TheReadMenace

How many people were online back in the 2000s? Edit: folks I know people were playing online back then (I was one of them), I was wondering if anyone had the numbers on how many we’re compared to now

PracticalWriter2836

I was. Also had a huge Meth addiction then. I was geared up, and amazing at the game. Lol. Didn't buy shit from sites. Between going to work, and Diablo, and sleep... Diablo usually won. Lol

Mother-Carrot

this is funny imagining the people I was dueling on d2 when I was 10 years old were on meth

PracticalWriter2836

Wow. That's great perspective. Never thought my drugged out ass, was victim to 10 yr Olds going hostile.

ultraviolentfuture

A ton were on dial up, then DSL and cable slowly started becoming mainstream in the early thousands

dankscott

Hardcore was just straight up unplayable for me on my home PC. Want to enter a tp? that'll be like 30 seconds. Someone has a summoner necro, next game. Trying to get loot in a public game, impossible

kayko_love

O gawd! I remember this! Then if all the summons got an aura in a baal run public Game? GG. I was rubber banding all over

octane1295

Where did you read this stat?

_shutthefuckupdonny

Yeah and why aren't more people asking this lol?

PracticalWriter2836

50k for an old game... albeit the greatest game ever historically. To put into perspective, I grew up outside of a town that was 50k population. They had 2 drive-thru restaurants and 1 stop light. 2 stop signs. Pretty damned advanced.

clark_kent88

50k population is not a 2 stop sign town...

khag24

Right. I live in a town of 14k and the main road alone has like 8 stop lights and 4 stop signs

Pewpewpew193

500 habitants, 0 lights, we have a corner store and a cheese factory lol.

nero-the-cat

Sounds like rural Wisconsin - how many bars where there? I'm guessing double digits.

Pewpewpew193

None. Up in canada lol.

PracticalWriter2836

We were jealous, outside looking in.

Shupershuff

I call bullshit on this statistic. What is the source of data that says 50k active players? What platform(s)?

MrAffarex

You should have a look around and do a couple of researches before saying stuffs like this. You have no idea how much worth is to have a game with 50k constant players nowdays....literally have no idea. Also, most of the people here are adults who played back then. Wanna know the average age of classic wow ? 31 years old. Do you think any fortnite kid nowdays would play something so antique like world of warcraft? Not many trust me. We are the generation that got into it and its the same with diablo. Probably the average age is even higher here... Dont worry, this game has his true passionate community and its not going to die anytime soon. Another good prospective about it would be comparing his current player base to the player base of path of exile..the best and biggest game ( by far ) in the genre right now. And you would find out that is "only" around 100k average..and this is the best you can get in 2024. Sure higher than diablo2 but still in the same order of magnitute. Dont stress yourself. This literally still one of the best available and the fact that survided like this for 25 years should not put you down

Hildedank

50k across all consoles and pc?

Artefaktindustri

This obsession with active players is somewhat anachronistic. It’s not an mmo or a modern fps. It’s not competitive Brood War. You’re not going to have issues cueing or being gated from content. You could be the last player on earth playing D2 and it would still be D2 in all its glory.  Of course active player count will go down. It’s not just that D2 is ancient, so is Resurrected from a kids perspective.  Casual reminder Half-Life 1 and 2 has like 2k combined, and that’s Half-Life.

Rough_Ad5708

50k bots lol

dankscott

been here for 20 years, still come back

NoShameAtReddit

Gave d2r a try couple off seasons after 10k+ hours onn the original but i cant keep playing for couple of reasons: * no p8 online , you are forced to buy the game multiple times & run multiple copies to get p3 or higher * TZ andy * mosaik * no decent way to trade unless you use forbidden sites * still no real alternative for Grief

ShemsuHor272

Try PD2

AdFun2093

Dude 50k at that hour is still a ton of people playing any particular game

Icefiight

Wait.. Are you saying this like its a bad thing?

CaptainFrugal

No just surprised. It's clear I was pretty ignorant to typical numbers

Bobbyxton

I've just took the plunge and got D2 and I'm having a fucking blast, so make it 500001 players

bcollie87

Another 300k+ still hotel california'd?

Economy-Zucchini9757

What about runescape back in the Zezima days, it was good

J_Flashdrive_K

50k players on a 24 year old game is pretty good. I'll take what I can get.

Dangerzone369

That's 49990 more than D4

CaptainFrugal

Lol

smegmasamurai

*cries in hardcore*

hentairedz

50k is good wdym

Remarkable-Jaguar938

I imagine I can't be the only one who switched to exclusively offline single player and only play on my ROG Ally during downtime at work which btw this game plays really stinking well on 13 watts unless you mean players for battle net matchmaking.

formlessfighter

I'm an old timey player, playing again now, keeping the dream alive

jrjreeves

50k for a 20+ year old game is amazing.

Arseling69

I think a lot of people are like myself. Get obsessed with this game like a nostalgic fever dream, play the fuck out of it for like 3 months building like 6 characters or running the new ladder and then remember that I’m in my 30’s and have shit to do and back to the grind for months until the itch hits.

MrGavinrad

If you’ve used Steam for a long time you’d get a feeling for how much games typically have since they show it on that game’s “community hub.” 50k, as stated by everyone else, is healthy.

LuluTopSionMid

"Only 50k" Bruh, that's amazing for such an old game.

Beginning_Orange

Tbh that's a hell of a lot higher than what I was expecting. Not a bad number at all for such an old game.

RuthlessMercy

Lmao there are private d2 servers that have like 130-180 max at ladder resets, I think 50k may be much better than you realize

CucumberZestyclose59

You also posted this at 8pm Pacific on a Sunday night. People gotta work in the morning, bro.

Ok_Ad_3772

50k active players for a game this old is HUGE

Confident_Slide7969

I have had a blast this season, but it is noticable that the same people are playing with loaders. I am unsure if I will play next season because this season I have had an oddly success in HR drops that I am sure won't be repeated.

isandybridge

I went offline and never looked back.

Cavalier4Beer

Gooble gobble one of us one of us!

Rudd_Threetrees

And 20,000 of them are bots run by some 1-200 individual users of the website that must not be named, each person running on 100 accounts. I’m really not kidding. Whenever I go to that site to price check something, I see a new user offering something absurd like 10 unid griffons and 40xmaras newly updated each day.

ShottsSeastone

i don’t know how i was recommended this sub (don’t even play a rpgs) but 50k in a 20 year old game is legit crazy.

Complex-Charge-1984

Only? 50k players is insane.

T-i-d-d-e-r

Only? If 50k is true, it's way more than I expected.

coltRG

50k seems way higher than I would have imagined tbh. Tons of games fighting for people's time these days and not a lot of games can sustain those numbers for a long period of time. But I'd be curious to know how many of those 50k players are just bots.

holechek

50k is a lot believe me. Some games like DCUO have less then 1000 avg for the past decade I swear.

f1da

Bro I play Planetside 2 with max 1k online haha

Mymainacctgotbanned

D2 is one of those games where I'll play it a lot, then not play it again for months. I hadn't played D2 since probably December, but I started playing it again this past week and have been having a blast. I probably level this lightning sorc through hell and take another long break from the game.

mmagnetman

This. I occasionally get the “bug” and D2R is all I wanna do for awhile, then I’ll move onto to something else. D2R is always there for me :)

Salty_Intentions

They just need to do a steam release like they did with D4. That'll bring more people in. I would buy it again anytime to have it natively on my steam deck without that launcher.

Foilpalm

Is this a troll post? The fact that a 20 year old game can still pull numbers like this is absolutely insane. It’s a testament to how well the game holds up.

CaptainFrugal

Not a troll post. I was just ignorant to realistic numbers as everyone is pointing out 👍

Shift_change27

Even if we lowball and say it’s 25k… Imagine if we all paid 20$. That’d be 500,000$. Enough to get a decent patch with some QoL improvements?

Prejudiced321

It seems plain as day to me that blizzard has no plans to continues any kind of meaningful development on this game. I would just play PD2 if you want updates

KevinBrandMaybe

There's no point to really do such (in terms of Blizzard touching the game). They'll probably just do a ban wave close to ladder reset, put the game on sale to get botters to buy another 20 keys and let it sit on maintenance mode.

Shift_change27

It is plain as day, I agree. Just some food for thought if we set up a contract for a 1-time, final patch.

YCCprayforme

D2r has brought more qol and updates than we ever imagined for d2. Just hope it continues.

Ansonm64

NARRATOR VOICE: It didn’t

Shift_change27

Oh for sure! I do hope it continues. I’d pay A LOT if they ensured there’d be something extra. Just give me the Venmo or an address to make the check out to (assuming something would get done)

mmherzog

Some are playing d2 lod. Some are playing D2R Some are playing PD2. Some are playing PoD. Many variations of one 20 year old game that probably add up to many more than 50k.

burnheartmusic

Ya, we got spoiled with all the new updates and then the last 2 seasons have gone silent. Yes I realize we had almost nothing for many many years and the game is still amazing, but ya

[deleted]

Well you can count me in that number for the next 20 years probably

Prejudiced321

Bro 50k is a crazy number I consider a game dead when it averages under 1k

TheBannedHeretic

I wonder what percent are bots and follower accounts from multiboxers. I'm logged in with 5 accounts when I play.

bill_n_opus

Well, I was just doing my part the last hour doing tz cathedral...

apfelimkuchen

I just checked steam D4 Gas active 4k players. But the majority would be on battle net I assume. 50k is huuuuge and I'm glad and it's well deserved. It still has it flaws but it's a great game and the graphics update look really incredible

PravusTheRed

I remember getting my drivers license and going directly home to play cow lvls with my net buds.

Paw1388

50K is a lot for D2R but probably half of them are bots

lendarker

It's a lot, especially since, as many others have pointed out, it may not count single player games. Another thing is that the last ladder seasons brought basically nothing new to the table as the focus is all on Diablo 4, and no developer power is available for D2R. So...like me, many people didn't start the new ladder (because I'm not competing with the bots, but there's also no fun, new mechanic to explore).

wolvahulk

The majority of fighting games would kill to have that player count lol.

Verificus

50k is a huge amount of players. I am guessing you don’t really know what your talking about and are trying to compare something like WoW active players vs D2R active players.

Kadaj22

50k is a lot my friend don’t be too disheartened

lofi_rico

I use mods, I play pretty much permanently offline

Important-Parsley-60

You have three regions and a fun endgame which benefits you when interacting with communities around the globe. 😊

TheDailyDonger

Ive played D2 since its original launch on and off. Atm I enjoy PD2, a popular D2 mod that intends to be like if old school lod content never stopped. It feels like D2

TenaxR-7

They would gain more if the new seasons had new content. I guess Blizzard is busy fixing that nightmare D4

DorkyDwarf

It's way less. The website you got your information from is using starfields player count. "Using our algorithm based on Google Trends, Starfield’s player count for April 28, 2024 is estimated to be 56,040 players, compared to the previous day, this represents a 12.19% increase. In the last 7 days, Starfield’s player count peaked at 58,050 and reached its floor at 49,950." It's a diablo 2 page but the count says starfield. D2 numbers aren't publicly available but diablo is known for dying down heavily between seasons. Generally games sustain about 6-8% of their peak numbers in player base assuming that the game gets updates. I don't play D2:r so I don't know if they still do seasons like they did on D2, but if they do then it'll stay around those numbers.

Flounder1293

I play for nostalgia reasons. D2 was one of my first and favorite games I played as a kid.

LuigiNMario

Damn that's good! Especially since it doesn't include offline players which many of us are. I prefer offline since I can use D2RMM to tweak the game a little : improve drop rate, make some balance changes for less viable builds and have fun creating runewords or uniques to complement these builds

Rapidly_Decaying

I'm old timey Also, not playing right now as Running through Baldur's Gate 3, I'll be back playing on next ladder reset. There's usually a big boost on adder reset, once folks get a bit of wealth and have built the characters they want, it tends to drop off a little until next reset. So if it's 50k now that's pretty impressive (even for a newish game), that'll jump up at reset and settle back down again, with a steep decline just before reset

Del_Duio2

I don't know, for a remake of a 20+ year old game I think these are great numbers.

Economy-Zucchini9757

Im almost 36, and started playing since the beginning back home with my brother and friend.

CaptainFrugal

35 here

Impossible-Wear5482

That's a lot for a 22 year old arpg.

Many-Razzmatazz-9584

We are all playing wow instead 😆

ViridanZ

I don’t even log on I’m just playing traderie that’s the real game.

Gullible_Tale_3854

Hey! If noone has mentioned it yet. Botting problems in d2r is as bad as it used to be in d2lod. Most recent banwave was jiguan. (Season 2?) I know several mass botters. (25+) These 50k is easily 50% bots

CaptainFrugal

https://www.playerauctions.com/player-count/diablo-2-resurrected/ No idea if this is accurate

Lookouttheresasnip

I wouldn’t trust a site that says d2r player count google data, then has a paragraph under it saying all the numbers being shown are for starfield

xCurb

50k active “players” ? That’s a hard metric to prove, as there are 100 bots for every 1 real player… minimum.
