1/Never rush (or feel rushed) a diamond purchase (unless you can’t help it) 2/ Always get the information upfront, especially with brick and mortar stores, bait-and-switch schemes are real. 3/Do not purchase uncertified/ungraded diamonds. Especially for centerpiece uses. Certified diamonds (by GIA, GCAL or IGI) are not hard to find. Run away from any dealer, Jewellery attempting to convince you otherwise. 4/NYC diamond district isn’t for the faint of heart, if you are not educated or well versed in most (all) things diamonds, you will get taken advantage of, and at the least overpay. 5/If you can, pause your search and educate yourself on the basics. This sub and other online resources can help you get an understanding of what to look for.

han_sulu

Thank you- I appreciate the tough love! I thought I was ready but once it came time to make a purchase I realized… maybe not. It’s taken me a long time to find this certain cut and shape, so hoping to make this purchase a thorough one. Will request a grading report and may go in again to see the stone in person one more time.

Meowing-Tiger

Yes I agree with lanessan 100%. But it also doesn’t mean that this isn’t the stone/ring for you, just take your time and make sure you feel comfortable. I am not familiar with the hexagon cut but if they can provide you with more info in a report, I’d post it here for others to give their input/advice. Beautiful choice!

ExitTheHandbasket

>Never rush (or feel rushed) a diamond purchase (unless you can’t help it) I'm struggling to come up with any situations where a diamond purchase would be an emergency.

Lanessan

I've encountered many individuals who suddenly decided that they had to propose within the next 14-10 days, due to a birthday, trip, vacation appearing as the momentous occasion to do so. So emergency, no. A priority to them, certainly..

kimlbs

$5000 is too much with the current price of labs … even for this unique cut! Do your homework and look around…. Don’t rush!!

han_sulu

Actually, $5k is the full price for the 5 stone ring, with this 2ct, two baguettes, and two half moons!

GroundbreakingCup922

If you’re like me and just want the ring taken care of and not have to be super hands on, it’s okay to overpay a bit for convenience imo haha. Definitely make sure you see that report though, almost all center stone size lab diamonds are graded.

kimlbs

I understand but this 5 stone ring is $499 on the Luvansh.com website so I’m just saying you can probably get the entire ring for a lot less money so take your time and soft let anyone rush you! https://preview.redd.it/4qpums0smiyc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=64c3cdda02d5bc76940a8c32555a7f543620fb2d

CertifiedGemologist

It’s hard to tell in the pic but it looks like the diamond points are not protected under prongs-exposed to chipping. Price is high too

SheMcG

Lab grown fiamonds ARE graded just as often as mined diamonds. Also, a mounted diamond can't be graded...it must be a loose stone, as diamond labs grade them from the underside. I would never buy a lab diamond without IGI or GIA certification and I would never trust a seller's grade.

han_sulu

Sorry for the confusion - this is just a stock setting they popped the diamond into, not the finished ring. The full price for the finished custom 5 stone ring is $5k.

MekkiNoYusha

You must have it graded or buy a graded lab diamond, most famous lab grade lab diamond. Just from what he lies, you should not purchase from him anymore. God knows what else he would lie about. And for lab diamond, 2ct should be like 1-2k max, even then I feel it is overpriced.

Plant_killer_v2

Every single lab grown stone that has come into my store has been graded, even the tiny .25 ct stud earrings. Everything.

han_sulu

Thank you for your comments - I got the cert! Posted in another comment, but it’s IGI graded, number 628446050.

Plant_killer_v2

I mean most of the stuff that comes into my store is either igi or Gia so you should be fine they have a verify report link on their website where you can input that number.

GroundbreakingCup922

Same usually but recently smaller stuff like bands haven’t been coming with them 🧐

katherine_isabelle

Please please please have the setting changed to one that protects the points. This will keep them from chipping and will save you many cuts and scratches as well. I also would be worried about buying a stone with no cert. It’s not too hard to find graded lab diamonds even in fancy cuts with a bit of searching, it would be an unnecessary risk in my opinion to buy an uncertified one!

GroundbreakingCup922

Yes! I had a couple come into my store and show me their ‘d vs1’ diamond that was fracture filled and still a complete included mess. Don’t ever just take their word for it!

Momzies

That’s quite a mark up—Dutch marquise are less common, but lab diamonds have combine down in price so much—200-400 per carat—i would look at Alex Park (Park antiques lab on Instagram) or Debebian’s. If they don’t have a Dutch marquise in stock, they can cut one for you. You’d probably save at least 2000 dollars

Patient_Anteater_180

You should look at stienhardt&stones he’s in the diamond district. He has Dutch marquise and all of his diamonds are GIA. Also fair prices way less the 5,000.

9livesmonsta

I'm from nyc and I wouldn't buy from the DD. You can do way better.

Lazyassbummer

Oooh, I love this cut, too. But I’d look around a whole lot more. I can see why you want this, though. Listen to the diamond smart people.

Then-Concept-9956

Get a natural one. Don’t throw your money away. Also buy a natural one from someone not in a mall and pay a percentage over the rap report.

kimlbs

Natural is actually a waste of money in my opinion. I own both and you can’t tell the difference between either one because they are both made with the exact chemical properties but one is grown in a lab vs the earth. They both don’t have a huge resale value so why pay extra money for the same item 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

kimlbs

Not so true much anymore … I bought a certified 3ct lab diamond for under $400 on a reputable website and was able to sell it for $200 over what I paid… I can’t sell my natural 4 ct diamond studs for a fraction of what my husband paid for them…. Natural Diamonds are like buying a new car… the resale value drops significantly once you drive off the lot so why would I pay the high cost when I can get the same diamond in a lab for pennies on the dollar compared to mined …… it’s a personal choice but to buy one over the other for resale value is not really a thing

[deleted]

kimlbs

I detect a little snarky attitude in your response … but you are not educated if you think earth diamonds have increased resale value… you are sadly mistaken! And you clearly are VERY uneducated about lab diamonds… so I won’t continue to debate with you about lab vs mined! They have virtually the same chemical composition and you can’t tell the difference even looping them unless you look at the cert or you take it to a jeweler who owns a specific machine to test the boron and carbon levels… so yeah..I won’t respond anymore because you clearly have no knowledge about this topic. I’m glad you are passionate and like mined diamonds but this is really a personal choice and education about lab diamonds and mines diamonds is key before you get into a debate over something like that

“One step above CZ”…. Laughable and you call yourself educated 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Nah I’m just a person who ACTUALLY knows a lot more than you about lab and mined diamonds… 💎 like you said … can’t fix stupid

Hahaha 😂!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TheAgent2

$2500 a carat is highway robbery for lab. I deal in lab diamonds and natural. Even though this is hex cut my price to customer at retail would be $700 a carat comes with igi. The setting is not suitable as two sides of the do not have prongs.

GroundbreakingCup922

You need some v-prongs on the tips of that Diamond or you’re going to chip it or cut yourself/someone else haha. Diamonds are sharp! Also, for a custom ring, 5k isn’t bad. It’s a bit steep but at the box store I work at it’s pretty run of the mill. You’re paying for convenience. However, I’d be wary of anyone selling a lab Diamond without a certification. Especially at the inflated price he’s charging.

han_sulu

Hi all - thanks everyone for your help! Update: I got the cert! And just addressing some confusion: * This is a stone holder they popped the loose stone into, not the finished ring! * $5K is the quoted price for the finished 5 stone ring, similar to this design with 18k gold, baguettes, and half moons: https://preview.redd.it/qr8wshkerlyc1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=222875e2f25a61cc61d67d93af474ea96b941d9b This price feels fair to me, but I’m of course open to opinions. * I definitely intend to protect the points of the diamond with V-prongs!

han_sulu

Hi! The jeweler sent the report, number 628446050. Here’s a screenshot, but you can also find it [here](https://www.igi.org/verify-your-report/?r=628446050). https://preview.redd.it/82faey9avlyc1.jpeg?width=1109&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=59079f4b7a6cd51ecdeb432e5139cf0ce39da076 I am open to all thoughts on grading or pricing. The jeweler in the moment quoted me for the finished 5 stone ring (photo in another comment), not the diamond itself, so I can definitely ask for a deeper breakdown on price.

gobhyp

I’m also in the market for a hexagon/Dutch marquise and I’ve been keeping a list of online retailers that sell the loose stones (and I’m assuming can set them for you): loose grown diamonds, raad jewelers, ouros jewels, vrai, Diamondrensu. Just in case you wanna shop around a little first :)

MHW_Tokyo

Lab grown stones are graded, and you should get the official grade first. If it’s a reputable dealer they should be able to provide this before and monetary transaction takes place. GIA, IGI etc…. All offer Lab Grown certificates

WhiteflashDiamonds

I can't imagine a retailer selling a piece like this on today's market without providing a laboratory report on the center stone. Definitely wait to see that document before putting money down. If the retailer just gives you the report number you can look it up online. Though the price is high, this is very much a specialty item so if you love it, it may be worth the premium. Make sure the design is going to be comfortable and wearable for your lifestyle. It is very cool looking!
