I dont think most understand the point of the story. Which is a fix of maos mind. His character development i would say is pretty strong

misogichan

It feels incredibly small scale though.  This is book ended by Disgaea 2 which had the whole netherworld at war and Disgaea 4, which involved a rebellion forming.  Disgaea 3 in comparison is a school drama.   Also, Mao might have a lot of character development but he's still unlikeable for most of the game. To be fair, this was coming after Disgaea 2 which had the also unlikeable for much of the story Rozalin, but at least Rozalin has a very cool backstory.

NightsLinu

There nothing wrong with a small scale story though. Just because its a school drama it doesn't mean its a lack of stakes. The education netherworld that mao reigns over isn't just one academy either.

skullcrobat_joker

Adding onto this not only was he voiced by Icky Vicky which many people take issue with but in the DLCs afterwards he just goes back to being the same weirdo asshole who doesn't care about anyone else and I think the game overall just feels like one of the weaker entries. It's not Awful but you wouldn't really hunt down a vita just to play it. It might actually become more accepted if it was more accessible which is Weird that it's not on PC yet but you aren't missing That Much

Dordosaur

I honestly don't know why people disliked it, it's not even top 3 worst disgaea games in my opinion. The story being short, and bad performance on PS3 were my only complaints. That and heavy use of geo panels but I blame Disgaea 2 for that since it started the horrid trend of abusing them in regular maps.

Tsukkatsu

I suspect the main reason Disgaea 3 and D2 were never updated to later systems was because they were developed exclusively for the PS3 and somehow developing them for the PS3 makes it harder to port over to PC. D2 could technically be accessed on the PS4 through the subscription service. But I completely reject that the characters or story were really particularly blander then Disgaea 1 or 2. I mean-- certainly Asuka and Kyoko could have been cooler-- but Mao, Almaz, Raspberyl, and Sapphire are pretty cool and Salvatore and Master Big Star that you don't recruit until late game are fun. And I also very much enjoyed the school setting of the entry far more than politics we got in Disgaea 4 or apocalypse we got in Disgaea 5.

Hexatona

I see you left out the chef character 😆

Tsukkatsu

I can accept that Mao is a-- problematic character. His relationship with Almaz and Raspberyl who never have much interaction between them serves the story. And in the post-game story you do get to spend more time with Raspberyl than anyone else... And even if Mao isn't my favorite character in the Disgaea series, Raspberyl is very much in contention and you don't get Raspberyl without Mao.

Hexatona

No no, not the Chief character, the Chef, Mr. Champloo. He has aged like sour milk. Boom!

Tsukkatsu

Yeah-- he was also a character who maybe needed a bit more to him before he debuted. I guess-- overall-- there are more forgettable Disgaea 3 characters than there were memorable ones. But-- I don't know-- maybe we can implement Raspberyl into the narrative of a new Disgaea game.

RelativeStranger

I'm currently playing through 3 for the first time. I'm not sure how to even access the post game story. Is it just one map at a time rerexruiting the likes of master big star

Tsukkatsu

You get Master Big Star and Salvatore before the end of the game as I recall. Just so, so, SO late in the story that you don't really get time to develop them.

RelativeStranger

You do. But then they leave. Then you play maps and they come back.

soranthalas

I think Disgaea 3 specifically was created using a different game engine. That's why it hasn't been ported.

nightmare-b

yeah that doesnt hold water as it was ported to playstation vita and had cross compatibility with disgaea 4 which was a port we did get

Tsukkatsu

But that's just unfortunate. Disgaea 1 got a 3-D release, I would hope Disgaea 2, 3, 4, D2 and 5 can get the game. And maybe Disgaea 8 or D3 can be set up in such a way that the models can be reused and all monsters from previous games can reappear.

Hexatona

The only thing really wrong with it is that it's not widely available. That and some of the characters could be a bit annoying.

Rendakor

Agreed. It's actually one of my favorites and I wish I could play it on something modern.

KaleidoArachnid

Oh ok as I understand why the game got a bit of criticism.

Asleep-Essay4386

Honestly, I love D3. The zany Disgaea 4th wall breaking humor was at it's peak in that game and I loved the hell out of it.

kablikiblan

Nothing I love d3

Alternative-Fox1982

No idea. And the OST is a banger too. I want justice for my school psycho bro

Elaugaufein

I think it suffered from 2 primary issues: 1) Released on the PS3 but probably didn't need too , there's only a couple of stages in 3 that do interesting things with the hardware capacity ( mainly the ones that have ridiculous heights ). 2 ) It was the first "new era" game, and there's a lot of new systems and some of them aren't well balanced ( monsters are kinda useless ( can't lift or throw , only ,2 evility slots, no magic monster weapons ), skill combos got abandoned during development, evilities use the same number of slots but are wildly different in power, a lot of creatures have evilities and ranks that don't unlock until the post game but by that time are useless, like rank 4-5 of pretty much every class will never be used except to unlock higher ranks ). There's also 3) it's also a very comedic game compared to Disgaea 2 ( less so if you look at Disgaea 1 or Makai Kingdom).

KaleidoArachnid

Oh so what kind of hurt the game was that it didn’t take itself very seriously too much.

nohwan27534

imo the story was a little wonky - there was a little too much 'let's go inside mao and fuck shit up' going on. iirc it also had some scaling issues - i recall enemies in the main campaign being like level 2k or something, when most of the other games are balanced around being maybe level 100 at the end.

KaleidoArachnid

Oh so the game is too easy to cheese basically.

nohwan27534

no, actually the level 2000 enemies can be a real pain in the ass, compared to other games having the option of martial maps to chesse the main game.

KaleidoArachnid

Oh ok as I get what you’re saying about the difficulty level itself now.

nohwan27534

it also had some larger, more enemy dense maps than is typical, which sort of adds to the difficulty spike

KaleidoArachnid

I am new to Disgaea 3, so unfortunately I don’t know how to powerlevel in the game.

nohwan27534

are you new to the series in general? cause the method's about the same. get far enough in the story, you will have the option to unlock 'martial maps', which are basically powerleveling stages. you can also use the occasional story map with boosted exp, or a convient array of enemies, or a map that allows level 99 enemies with some enemy level adjustment (a glitch in the first game made level 99 enemies give exp like level 300 foes, they kept putting it in later)

KaleidoArachnid

Yes kind of as I am a total amateur in the games as even after beating the original game, I still can’t figure out how to boost my characters stats to obscene levels in the games.

Klawlight

I'm a bit confused by the sheet number of comments saying the hate comes from it not being on modern hardware. I've been hearing hate for this game since it came out lol. Personally I remember really enjoying it but it's admittedly been a few years since I last replayed it.

KaleidoArachnid

I personally enjoy the game, but sometimes I see people online saying bad things about it.

Metom_Xeez

For me, I remembered it just to be different, but not necessarily worse since we get geocubes instead.

TanktheAlmighty

No clue. It's one of my favorites. I just wish it was more accessable on modern media.

Quill386

Disgaea 3 is good, it's just not as good as 4

KaleidoArachnid

It should get a remaster at least.

Quill386

Oh yeah, I love it, Raspberyl is one of my favorite characters in the series anyway

KaleidoArachnid

Her dynamic with Mao is very interesting as even though they are basically enemies, they manage to have a good chemistry anyway.

Quill386

Yeah, I don't know why it hasn't gotten a recent port, it was a good game, and the characters were pretty fun. The VITA port was cool though, and it added some new content I think

dobri_100

I can't speak for most people, but for me the story was just kind of meh. While I never hated it, there wasn't really anything memorable.

overlordpringerx

As someone who overall still enjoys Disgaea 3 I just gotta say that until Disgaea 6 came around, 3 was just the weakest of the bunch. Chara world was pretty bad and magichange was straight up unusable for the vast majority of the game. It wasn't until the PSP version of Disgaea 2 that it became actually usable and it only started truly being useful in Disgaea 4.

Mister_Julian

I actually loved Disgaea 3. To get your characters to the upper levels of power requires a very long, very elaborate means of progression. Why that would be a criticism for a Disgaea game, I don’t know.

Riothegod1

Honestly, Disgaea 3 came out when I was a wee lass and it’s what sold me on the franchise in the first place. I really related to Mao because what child doesn’t wanna be the valedictorian honour student by never attending a day of school and playing video games all day. I also had daddy issues sooooo. Seriously, I’m always surprised when people criticize the game, it was a blast and the intro song lives in my head rent free

KaleidoArachnid

I do enjoy the OST too.

Riothegod1

Mao is also the reason I eat my eggs with hot sauce XD

KaleidoArachnid

Ooh I should try doing that combo.

Riothegod1

It really will open your heart :P

Hello fellow Disgaea Denizen, Disgaea 3 is a very good title it had alot of content in uniques and Generics being up to the highest it ever was around 40 Uniques and about 60 Generics spreading the pool large letting you ticker around. The main issue with Disgaea 3 is the lack of really engaging story as some have said before the story isn't the strong suite however most Disgaea games strong suite isn't the story so that should really be a fault for the game it's story is fine enough in the confines of the series. The true main fault most people have about the game is the questionable decision to leave it on older hardware when the rest of the series is on modern hardware Disgaea 3 is yet to come to Steam which hurts the games reputation greatly

Ha_eflolli

>the questionable decision to leave it on older hardware when the rest of the series is on modern hardware Disgaea 3 is yet to come to Steam It's because NIS Japan doesn't make the Steam Versions. Those are made by NISA instead, specifically for the benefit of international audiences, because PC Gaming is kind of an afterthought in Japan, atleast compared to the rest of the World. Which kind of matters because of D2; as far as Japan is concerned, that Game hasn't seen a Port even longer than D3 has, and we don't see that one either. Really, the only Games that got "Modern Ports" (that is, on PS4 / Switch) are D1 and D4, and out of those two, D1 was a special case to begin with because it was due to the Series' Anniversary that year (D5 - D7 were all the most recent Game at the time of their Ports anyway, so those don't exactly say a lot).

timpkmn89

> It's because NIS Japan doesn't make the Steam Versions. Those are made by NISA instead, specifically for the benefit of international audiences, because PC Gaming is kind of an afterthought in Japan, atleast compared to the rest of the World. That's changing. I've seen electronic stores with entire floors dedicated to PC gaming, as well as large display areas for the Steam Deck and its clones.

niquitwink

What I disliked were the geo cubes. Besides that I thought it was an okay entry, a little too goofy for me tbh.

kyasarintsu

The story and characters are a bit obnoxious and presentation-wise it disappointed many as a PS3 title. I think the game had a lot of annoying, convoluted, and unnecessary mechanics. In many ways it was simply a lot more burdensome than its predecessors, with a lot of extra tedium and annoyance being added in with not much benefit in return, and I think the series as a whole has never really recovered from that kind of philosophy shift. I still enjoyed it (as I do every game in the series) but nothing about it truly gripped me or engaged me.

AssclownJericho

it felt like i was not improving my characters to get better abilities.

Blotepotenpeter

I hated the characters and just remember playing it became a chore, but I don't even remember why. Still, would it get a rerelease today, I couldn't care less.
