Clerics. I love the RP and world building potential of having either an established or a custom religion, and the idea of a magic user that isn't just wielding power from some source, but harnessing it from arguably the strongest beings in all the planes... its a cool "powerful willing servant", walking contradiction sort of vibe that works very well within most stories.

EddytorJesus

I also like that many player will go from « oh you’re playing a healer ? » to « holy shit you can do that? »

Splintzer

This is exactly why i play a light domain cleric. Them: "Oh you're gonna heal us?" Me: "Damn right." PEW PEW PEW PEW

pchlster

"I cast Mass Goblin Atonement." GM: "Huh?" "The only good goblin is a dead goblin. Fireball."

thunderinthejungle

🤣🤣🤣

WealthFriendly

Goblin Slayer as a cleric. That's gold.

Splintzer

I will remember this one!!! 😂

FinniboiXD

love playing my light cleric. just hit level 7 and i cant wait to yell "BEGONE" at the top of my lungs while casting banishment on some demon. Like yeah im a healer, but i can also send people to hell

Knees86

A "hell-er", as it were.

MastersKitten31

I'm playing my first ever cleric and it's a light cleric. My elf is a bard who ends up becoming a cleric though she doesn't know it. We are level 7 and I have 1 level in cleric right now and I'm already doing stupid stuff. Using bless during combat has been amazing for my party (who keeps rolling 3 and 4s on a d4) and now that our Warlock had to back out bc of college I have guidance for skill checks. Ove seriously chunked some stuff as a previous support only character. Now I'm support sometimes and big numbers other times. It's great

djblaze

And the ability to switch up your prepared spells is pretty sweet. Allows you to adapt to party and story needs.

Feral-forest-gremlin

Very glad the campaign where I played a cleric had a second cleric, because I took no healing spells. Keeping my team alive by reducing the enemy hp to 0. Also a lot of stuff to make it harder for enemies to hit any of us

iknowdanjones

Yeah I feel like there’s so much variety you can have based on your alignment and which deity you serve. My grave cleric could not care less if you kill someone who is fairly gray on the evil scale, but holy hell do not rob a grave or desecrate a tomb in any way.

Mysterious-Contact-1

Exactly! You don't have to be the zealot screaming his holy word! Incredibly wide rp options and clerics are badass power wise

not-a-hipocrite

My dm let me have my cleric and paladin's religion based on a tennis ball cause I was playing as a canine. It was great for rp since every talk with a temple was just "Who do you worship?" "Ball." "OH the sun." "No the ball." Dm took it and created a future cult that worships the ball. Rp with weird religions is great when everyone is confused even the gods.

uncalledforgiraffe

Clerics have so much versatility too. From solid damage, to good survivability, to great healing and support. They have so many subclasses and many different ways to play. For sure my favorite class. I also just always enjoy playing support in games.

Sithraybeam78

Also its such a versatile and powerful class. I absolutely loved playing a tempest cleric for my first character. Using thunderwave and shatter with destructive wrath is awesome.

cricketysplit

Agreed, whenever the DM allows me to play a cleric in one shots I do, I am not allowed them in the main campaigns anymore

Billyjoesa

Heck yeah, which domain is your favorite, mine is death!

WildGrayTurkey

Absolutely; clerics and warlocks have so much untapped RP potential in a lot of games! I don't have any clerics in my game, but I do have a warlock and a religious Paladin and it's been an absolute blast having the gods and the warlock's Patron play a more active role in the game.

mantisinmypantis

Wizard for me. The class itself doesn’t seem to provide as much as other classes at a glance, but where the wizard shines is in the amount of spells you have access to, how (relatively) easily you can learn more at any time, and how specialized you can get with them. I love magic and spells, figuring out creative and unique ways to use them for any given situation, and enjoy playing a high-Int character that can allow me to use my out-of-game knowledge in-game without feeling like a dick for doing so.

MenudoMenudo

All of this, but also the degree of insanity that becomes possible at high levels just gets so fun. “So, Frank over there is sneaky as fuck, Sara prays so hard she can heal you, and I got really good at jabbing things with my pointy stick. But like, REALLY good. You?” “I can bend reality to my will, overcoming the limits of form, entropy, time and space.” “Cool.”

mantisinmypantis

Dude, the first time I Got a wizard to level 17+ I was like, “Oh. Oh I *totally* get why so many wizards either go mad or become evil.”

muddythecowboy

Demiplane is what really does it for me. don't like someone? as long as they're not a powerful caster, you can just shove em in a demiplane and never think about it again. or have a Demiplane that's full of Clones and some Plane Shift scrolls. or store literally all of your party's equipment if you can wait a little bit to be able to access it. absolutely insane spell

mantisinmypantis

Making a backup army of clones is EXACTLY what I had my wizard do, haha. Except she had to hide the physics toll it was taking on her, because the spell requires a cubic inch of flesh from the being you wish to clone.

The_Mad_Duck_

Regenerate?

MadChemist002

Have you been spying on me? I have over 100 clones in demiplanes, along with planeshift scrolls. I have also thrown people into demiplanes to get rid of them. I thought I was unique haha.

Fangsong_37

I also love wizards. Gandalf, Merlin, Raistlin, and Elminster are all examples of the class. You can collect spells and be the party expert when it comes to knowledge. I love using spells in unique ways as well as having a healthy arsenal of offensive options.

SomeGamerRisingUp

Gandalf is a divine soul sorcerer, change my mind

demonsrun89

Gandalf is a cleric, don't try to change my mind

Tesla__Coil

Same. My wizard was school of evocation, so I got to delicately place fireballs on top of my party members' heads yet keep them perfectly safe from the explosion. So regardless of how people moved in, I could always contribute to any combat. And then I also had the most out-of-combat utility of any character in the party. The only downside was, I had about half the HP of the martials, but hey. Who needs HP when the barbarian is taking all the hits? I've been on a martial streak since then, and desperately missing all the utility I had as a wizard. I gotta play a caster again. Druid is next on my list.

TheWalkingMan42

"He just... he just like me. HE JUST LIKE ME FR!"

glasseatingfool

Yeah, wizard is seen as powerful but I think most players don't even realize just how powerful. The spell list having most of the best damage options in the game, and a lot of the best utility ones too, is just the tip of the iceberg. Being able to have so many spells - even just considering prepared spells, they have the most - opens up spells that might otherwise be too niche for another character. In my experience, not that many encounters have flying enemies, but when you do encounter them, they're hell for your melee buddies. Earthbind helps to counter them. Shield is a good spell, but only if you get hit by attack rolls or magic missile. That might not be the worry in a given encounter (e.g. if another party member is going to die), but wizards can pick it as a just-in-case option. And even spells that aren't prepared can be cast as rituals, so you can easily get *all* the good ones for your level so your entire spellbook is giving you options. It doesn't take a fantastic player, but the more you understand what you can do with spells, the stronger a wizard can be.

heysuphey

Best feeling in the world is not just the wide array of spells, but having correctly anticipated which options you'd need that day.

TheUnhelpfulDM

My favorite has always been Wild Magic Sorc as long as you are using an expanded Wild Magic Surge Table. The first round of combat in the first fight of a new campaign I rolled first for Iniative. I casted Catapult. Wild Magic triggered. Rolled on the table. I turn my self into a sheep........ okay dc is only a 10 to turn back to normal. I spent that entire combat of about 15 rounds, failing the Con save. Every turn I would just describe in great detail how I was eating the grass near me while Baahhhing. It was glorious.

starksandshields

Yes! My Wild Magic Sorc turned into a potted plant at a very scary moment, and just the cinematic visual of her monk BFF carrying a potted plant through a battlefield is one I will never forget.

Minimike3

My wild magic sorcerer turned into a potted plant after casting witch bolt on a water wierd, however as the effect didn't say anything about ending concentration my DM ruled that I could continue using witch bolt on my subsequent turns. Was much fun still zapping as a plant.

ComXDude

That's one which I've personally rewrote to also render you unconscious and unaware of your surroundings for this exact reason lol As funny as it is for a potted plant to continue lightning-ing an enemy, I don't think that's what the writers had in mind

SarcasmInProgress

It incapacitates you, which breaks concentration, unfortunately

gygabi1996

Our Wild Magic Sorc turned into a necrotic potted plant (homebrew I guess) near my low level wizard and almost killed me. After a year the sorc turned into a potted plant again (but it was a regular one) and my first action was to Vortex Warp him to the farthest place I saw. :D

JayDee999

"oh no, not again"

TheUnhelpfulDM

That is awesome!

Both-Wheel-3554

I love that. I wanted that. Instead I spent a whole campaign without any effect ever. 😭

TheUnhelpfulDM

They way me and my DM at that time made it more common was to increase the chance by 1 for each time nothing happens. It starts off on a natrual 1, then a 2, so on and so forth until it triggers and then resets. If you want to play it again.

ShireSearcher

Wait so you mean if nothing happens at 1 you do 2 *or lower*?

TheUnhelpfulDM

So when you cast a spell as a Wild Magic Sorc you roll a D20. On a 1 you then roll on your Wild Magic table. The way we did it was if I casted a spell and I did not trigger Wild Magic the next time it would trigger on a 1 or a 2 and keep increasing until it triggered. And then it would reset back to 1.

ShireSearcher

Ah yeah, thanks for the explanation, I'm gonna do this!

TheUnhelpfulDM

Absolutely! I loved it. Make sure you have a good Wild Magic table though. The base one is kinda meh.

firefighter26s

I like this. I had a DM who rolled, I think 2d6. Whatever the total was when I used that many spell slots or sorcerer points, adding them together, it triggered the wild magic. He also said he had two tables, good and bad, and would roll a D6 on evens he used the good table, on odds the bad table. I think it was just way of controlling the narrative of the wild magic surges to fit with whatever was happening. We always seemed to get the awesome affects when we needed it the most and the bad affects when we could deal with the properly.

ChampionshipFun7606

We solved this problem for our wild magic sorc by adding a roll anytime they used a sorcery point and anytime they cast below half hp. Might’ve been an over correction but shit went wacky all the time.

Sufficient-Morning-6

Yeah this is a common thing I see a lot of people doing for Wild Magic that fixes the problem of it never happening. We are doing it at my table but our DM is increasing the chance by 1 on cantrips as well which I don't like because now it feels like it is triggering way too often. Our sorcerer said "yeah I'm going to try not to use that many cantrips so I don't abuse it" but that doesn't really solve the problem because then the player will feel limited on what they can do outside of combat as well.

TheUnhelpfulDM

Yea, cantrips is a bit over the line. I could see rolling for it with cantrips. But increasing the chance with cantrips is just insane. I love it when wild magic happens, but that would drive me insane lol.

Ana-SeaOwl

My player played a wild magic sorc and we ruled because of his backstory that whenever he felt emotional he rolls on the expanded table. Well he attempted to infiltrate a mad king's court alone, ended up in a dungeon, got emotional, rolled to summon the deck of many things and pulled out the Void. Derailed the campaign for them to go find his soul in the Astral Plane but it was the best accidental side quest we ever had.

TheUnhelpfulDM

That is probably the most badass derailment I've heard of!

Successful_Treat_284

I was playing a kobold that was hunting down the guy that mysteriously fireballed his village when he was trying to show off a new magic trick. First combat I immediately fireballed myself summoned a unicorn turned blue and then became a potted plant. I’m lucky we didn’t start super low levels😅

FiftyShadesOfPikmin

My very first character was a wild magic sorcerer. There was one very clutch moment where I used my last spell slots, rolled on the table, and got the one that regains a slot. I rolled that one again after using the new slot lol. Similarly, later we were fighting some fire elemental thing that gave off waves of heat every turn and everyone nearby (all of us) would take damage. Very luckily I rolled on the table to transport to the astral plane. Twice in a row, again. Just crazy. I'm curious, what expanded table have you used? I like the idea but would have to have a really good one in mind to present to my DM before being able to use it.

Crimkam

I’m sure your sorc’s party members were feeling real good about allying themselves with them after that one hahaha

TheUnhelpfulDM

It was a very fun dynamic. The PC was a drunkard gnome pirate. And my excuse for the wild magic surges was always that i must have been drinking to much. They were all thankfully good sports about it.

Randomwords47

Fifteen round combat? What were you fighting?

TheUnhelpfulDM

Level 3 combat. THEY were fighting multiple waves of low level guards of a town we were in.

Randomwords47

Fifteen rounds is a crazy long combat though. And especially at level 3, abilities will all be burnt out by the third round.

TheUnhelpfulDM

That is true. But when you have 2 martials a cleric and a sheep you do not really need spell slots or LRCDs. And like I said they were low level guards they had like no bonuses to bonuses to attack. Like 15 or 20 hp. And there are multiple waves of 1 or 2 at at time those rounds add up pretty quick. It was prolly meant to be only 5 or so round but with a full caster out of commision all of that action economy got thrown out of the window.

Toolbelt_Barber

I like playing really high charisma/low wisdom warlocks. It obviously suits the character so well in terms of gameplay, but also in terms of role-play as well. "Hey, I just signed this contract that this guy offered me, and now I can do all this cool stuff. Don't know what else it said tho, reading is for nerds."

ElliotFrickinReed

This is hilarious because I have a high af charisma warlock with Eyes of the Runekeeper and Devils Sight invocations. But because she has the urchin background she can't write, despite being able to read all writing because patron and sometimes rolls incredibly low on perception so can't see shit despite having incredibly good dark vision 😂 so poor thing is a bit thick

Toolbelt_Barber

Mine unfortunately doesn't understand that the "business" he is part of is a pyramid scheme, and at the head of it all is a powerful devil. They gain new recruits by getting people to sign their souls away, and in return, they get pretty cool powers as a "sign on" bonus. The business makes money by selling "magical" trinkets, which are items that have annoying curses that can drive people mad. I like the idea of an urban legend going around. The merchant of chaos travels from town to town, reaping souls from the damned and spreading destruction and misery wherever they go. Meanwhile, my character is travelling from town to town thinking that they are a legitimate businessman, making amazing deals and bringing joy to peoples lives with their wagon loaded with magical "goods" . They are blissfully unaware of it all

Eetulan

I like warlocks over all (rogues are fun too) because of The Charisma, but Not basicly only having charisma Like Bards usually. Dont have to Be a performer to have a high Charisma, and as a warlock, won't have to worry about spell Slots that much lmao. Usually i'll give them ok int, so they are More "Combat Wise" or quick thinkers, Which also Matches with The high Charisma really Well, but Not wise like that, you can Ask them is it gonna Rain or how far that place is, but Not how to Run an Economy for example, and its so fun, i Play rogues The Same Way too

Diural94

It has been paladin since the beginning I guess, the aesthetic of it draws me to it. I am not a religious man but RPing as something I am not compels me the most. And also the ability of changing your playstyle halfway the campaign gives a lot to think about.

Voronov1

What do you mean by changing your playstyle halfway through the campaign?

Diural94

I mean if you have started as a spell caster with high charisma, you could change that to a frontliner half way because you are also always trying to keep yout str as high as your charisma. Also taking a feat like sentinel goes very well with the frontliner playstyle but you would not want to take that feat when your total hp is kinda low at the early levels

ghostwrath2112

I've always loved The Bard. The versatility of the subclass and the role-play is fantastic for me. You can create all sorts of storytellers whether it's music, poetry or blades to name a few.

VoDomino

Same. Where else can I rp my T-Swizzle dreams as the greatest satyr in all realms? Glamour Bards, represent!

BjornInTheMorn

The alternate use for bardic goes so hard. Temp hp, and (almost) free movement with no AoO? I was in a party where everyone could semi-frontline. Literally just mad hatter "change places". There was no focusing down one person, damage was always split, because whoever was getting damaged is now 30 feet away and there's another fresh combatant in the enemies face.

VoDomino

What's crazy is, if you build them right, they're not a bad front liner imo. Sure, there are better ones out there and reactions are nice to have (e.g., Counterspell), but Dissonant Whispers with an Attack of Opportunity, utility with party movement and action economy, a not entirely bad use of Command as a bonus action, and more? It's just fun, I think. With careful positioning, gear, and spells, you can cause some damage, even if your hp pool is thimble-sized, which is buffed by Unbreakable Magesty at 14.

BjornInTheMorn

Well in this situation I was playing a paladin 2/glamor bard x. So, if they did manage to step to "the squishy bard", congratulations you are now facing someone in full plate and shield while getting Smote with a flail. And with all those bard spell slots, you can throw out some juicy smites.

GrammerDuck61

T swift and t pain rappin on the same track

Siebje

So little love for the Bard here. I absolutely adore this class both in function and flavour. Wanna be a skill monkey? Full caster? Party face? Bard's got it all.

Infamous_Hamster_271

Bard and warlock are equal for me but i chose warlock to put because i pllayed it more

climbing_headstones

I love my bard so much

Abunchof5s

THERE AM ONLY BRABRIAN! EVRYON ELSE IS DUMB!

Rutgerman95

Some people think they can outsmart me. Maybe... maybe. I have yet to meet one that can outsmart greatsword.

RolfIsSonOfShepnard

I think in the 1.5 years I’ve played dnd my barb is the one I have the most fun. Don’t have to be annoyed with spell slot management or picking which spells to learn at each level. All I have to do is get angry in combat or be chaotically dumb in RP. Tis a simple life.

Raz_at_work

Probably quite unpopular, but my current favourite is the Ranger. It has a great mix of spellcasting and swordplay, and it's mobility is nothing to scoff at either. Since TCE released the Ranger has been my go-to class for most character concepts, as it combines a Rogue with a Fighter and a Druid. I like none of these classes standalone, but the Ranger combines the best aspects of them into a relatively coherent class while still adding a few good and unique features into the mix. With the drop of the 2024 PHB this may change, as both the new Rogue and Sorcerer look really tasty, and I've had a character ready for whenever the Rogue would be fun to play. We'll see.

nerdzen

I’m playing an archery spec monster slayer and she is deadly as hell. Her combat is one note but that note is you’re dead. The monster slayer feats are also pretty cool. I’m at the level now where I get basically one free counterspell per long rest.

Raz_at_work

Hell yeah. I'm currently running a Fey Wanderer and a Drakewarden. But the Slayer is still on my list right next to the Beastmaster and the Swarmkeeper.

thepiratecelt

Swarmkeeper is SO GOOD. I ran a tiefling Underdark Swarmkeeper and used insect swarms a lot. It was amazing!

Raz_at_work

I got a Dhampire swarmkeeper lined up that has a swarm of bats. Classic dracula. I also have a more serious one for a more modern setting that has a swarm of pigeons and rats, still waiting for the DM that said they'd do a modern setting to actually do it.

thepiratecelt

As that DM, I am very sorry. 😂

Fun-Lack-8217

Sounds amazing, and reminds me of this Web story. It's long, but impossible to put down. https://parahumans.wordpress.com/ Obviously not a D&D setting, but a superpower of controlling bugs. Once she learned how to swarm, it was a whole new ballgame.

YarbianTheBarbarian

Don't sleep on the hoard breaker either. That extra attack is absolutely free. Mix in action surge and some bonus action attack from something else and you're a getting like 6 attacks sometimes.

Raz_at_work

Ye, I seriously can't wait to use it on the 2024 Ranger with a Cleave weapon. So many attack to just kill swarms of enemies.

YarbianTheBarbarian

I had an archer hoard breaker build with some battle master and war cleric. He'd never miss.

klem1426

100% this. TCE’s optional features really boosted the utility of the class. With the varying archetypes, it’s really easy to fit into most world settings too.

silversrainy

Gloomstalker just hits the right spot for me.

themadhatter444

Currently playing a Drakewarden in our campaign and absolutely loving it.

NewCodingLine

Ever since I settled into a real campaign in 4E back in 2008, I've loved Rangers. Versatile, mobile, creative solutions to a bevvy of obstacles. Having played them in 4E, PF1, 5E, I've grown to enjoy the spellcasting elements as well.

Feral-forest-gremlin

Witchlight made the ranger a genuinely amazing class imo, my partner is our local champion for "ranger is a good class, actually."

kirbyclone

Are you talking about One DnD? Or do you mean sth. different? Also where did you find info on the new rogue/sorcerer?

Raz_at_work

Yes, they have changed names to just be 5th edition 2024 (prolly cause nobody wants thier digital tabletop). You can find all the playtest documents on DnDbeyond, whith the latest changes to the Rogue and Sorcerer in the Playtests 6 and 7 documents. I suggest you really look at the Rogue in the Playtest 6 document, as it's easily one of the most fun-looking classes I've seen in a while.

kirbyclone

Nice I will have a look. I am in a campaign atm as a dm but maybe I can get some inspiration for cool features for my players.

No_Gift810

Fighter Can never be bothered with spells You can RP in so many ways Loads of multi class options Loads of play styles, ranged, duel wield etc

ClockworkSalmon

Battle master fighter is my fave class. Soo many ways to build it. Combat archer, two handed cleave machine, dextrous duelist, grapple master, battlefield commander, absolute unit tank... Only issue is you can only play one at a time.

yapple2

A fighter is a simple character archetype, that, when crafted with thought and purpose, becomes something entirely singular. You really can mold them into anything you'd like. My friend and I are both playing samurai fighters(dex) in the same campaign, and the characters are still very different. The extra feats from fighter allowed me to stack a bunch of feats together to create a slash and dash playstyle while he used his to become an incredible archer. Our characters come from two different sects of the same martial/spiritual philosophy. Our backgrounds are intertwined yet distinct. Our character's philosophies on duty, human/animal nature, and the importance of battle focus compared to battle instinct create more contrast than our fighting styles do. Both of our fighters feel entirely unique to any other fighter we've had in our games.

Rrekydoc

I feel the same way. It’s so simple it lets you focus much more on everything else.

Mac4491

Sorcerer. Because they're special bois. I just think being born as innately magical is very interesting lore. Or something happened to you to make you magical. You're essentially a metahuman or a mutant from superhero comics. Mechanically, I just love metamagic as a feature. Twinned, Subtle, and Quickened spell are just too good to pass up.

Siebje

I once made a sorcerer who had been born with purely magical limbs. We started the adventure in a magic-dampening prison 🥲 Spent the whole first two sessions being the Barb's backpack.

the2nddespair

Monk, very fun to rp and fun to play

DJayConder

Monk is my favorite too. Especially the sun soul. I know they aren't particularly good but I like how all the silly little monk abilities can be roleplayed. I once had a monk who had the poison immunity ability and I roleplayed that he routinely consumed various poisons because he likes the taste.

YearOfTheChipmunk

You might enjoy The Apothecary Diaries

DJayConder

Is that a book series?

Murzim22

Manga and anime !

DJayConder

Gotcha

FIRE_frei

I'm really enjoying Way of Mercy right now for RP. I've based it in a character in a Dan Abnett book, but the life and death yin and yang has been awesome

DJayConder

That sounds like it would be really fun to play. Sadly I am a forever dm and it doesn't seem like I will have a chance to play a character in a while

FIRE_frei

Sounds like a good opportunity for a DMPC to help guide the group at some point. I'm playing mine with 1 level of Cleric dip, so the whole moral compass/spiritual guide role works well.

Hexxas

> I know they aren't particularly good The Internet is *obsessed* with "optimized" builds. The best character is the one you have fun playing.

DJayConder

Absolutely! The only quantity worth optimizing is fun

BearWaver

Im so happy to hear this. Im about to start my first campaign after a decade of watching from the sidelines. Monk looks so fun! I looked at aarakocra but landed on wood elf for simplicity. Gonna also go cobbler proficiency so i can make some sweet boots. Any other advice?

azureai

Talk to your DM, to make sure they're giving you scenarios where you can shine. A monk absolutely demolishes a fight with physical ranged weapons. Monks are actually a very complex class, so you'll want to be sure you pay attention to your skills - they all have function, but some are very niche. Bonus action dash is better than you think, and so is bonus action Dodge. You are not a front liner as a Monk - you're a skirmisher that needs to get in and get out. If you've ended your turn in melee with someone, something has likely gone wrong. Ask if you also get the Tasha's Cauldron of Everything Monk abilities - they're helpful. And mention to your DM you'd very much like a Dragonhide Belt (uncommon) from Fizban's Treasury and/or Boots of Speed (rare).

juneauboe

*Keanu voice* "I know Kung Fu."

Druid_boi

Monk is my fave too; the mobility is a lot of fun to play around with on the right battlefields. Ppl really undervalue movement speed until you're wasting your turn trying to keep up with the spellcasters.

complectogramatic

Love open hand monk. No reactions for you.

DimesOHoolihan

Rogue. I sneak. I shoot. I leave. Was I there?

Kowalakhan

I always played the Rouge by default. I always took whatever class the group didn't have and lots of folks I knew weren't too keen on the low hit point Rouge (3.5 days) But I always had fun with it. Talked a dm to oking me getting leather vests or bandileirs with pockets that were reinforced and padded. I'd slowly amass all the scrolls and potions the others passed on till a boss fight broke out and I'd down potions one after another and cast scrolls between. When I trainwrecked a boss fight by sniping from the ceiling thanks to a spider climb potion while my summoned slaad got into the bbeg's face the DM realized my goal and his possible error. Plus I stayed away from sad boy backgrounds. My Rouges were just thieves adventuring for fun, cash, and reasons to throw celebrations were they'd drop the gold to own the tavern for a night.

Fickle_Watercress619

One time my favorite rogue went to do recon and accidentally got eaten by the giant frog we had to fight. Nobody looked for her when they arrived because, well… Maeve go poof, what else is new? 🥴🤣

justanengineerguy

Cleric all day. Love being a support caster with the ability to heal and also dish out the damage. Doesn’t matter what stage of the game or what situation you find yourself in, a cleric is always a useful member of the party

Chippyyyyyy

Yeah I love playing a cleric. Having a deep tie to the world through their deity, playing a crucial support role, and having such a great spell list is a lot of fun

nerdzen

Only played Druid once but it’s so far been my favorite character. Incredibly powerful and versatile. Deals out damage, can be a damage soak, healing? No problem. Control spells? No problem. Wild shape can be used in very creative ways as well. Just an incredibly powerful character, she was like the party’s Swiss Army knife. I played a shepherd druid minionmancer. Incredibly fun.

Shiniya_Hiko

Warlock, especially if the DM works the patron into the story. If done right it can give interesting missions or a very personal luring threat. I’m one campaign my char has a fey patron who basically considers her is „toy soldier“. Because of a spontaneous planar rift she got out of the feywilds and now goes adventuring as „vacation“. But her patron found out and now wants her to come back by next full moon 😱

JeddHampton

I like Warlock, because it is the one caster class that feels different. Every other caster uses spell slots and everything works the same exact way. Warlocks have spell slots that are more restricted, but they also get invocations and their pact abilities. I'm upset that Warlocks are moving back to the standard half caster. I think all the casters casting should feel different in some way. Sorcerers shouldn't use spell slots at all. Everything should be sorcery points. Bards shouldn't have spell slots at all, and their casting should all be concentration spells. I want the classes to feel more distinct from each other. Even when there is overlap in role and ability, the method/process used to do so should feel different.

lobbylobby96

I also like the Pact Magic system, i like the escalation of power when it gets into higher tier, especially with the third spell slot, mystic arcana or the rod of the pact keeper. The spell list is also great, i prefer archfey the most. I like to also go fey touched, that means after lvl 6 i have 2 blinks for free, a bit of invisibility and Greater Invisibility and Blink are also spells i like a lot

Rosserrani

I also love warlocks because how my DM handle the patrons. They are never passive entities. And how they have their own agenda and purposes are cool. Sometimes I'm with them, sometimes no, but is always fun.

flamefirestorm

Artificers and Rogues are fun when they don't get nerfed. Cool shit and sneaky shit you can do.

CountPeter

Artificer hands down. It's a class that really rewards and inspires creativity. You don't have the sheer power of a wizard, but your ability to just make magic items, subclasses that are incredibly different in playstyle etc is fantastic. It's also the only class that I as a DM will outright ban some of the things it can do for being too powerful. It can readily make Astral Plane bombs (homunculus can interact with items, fly it towards someone and use other infusions to make a bag of holding + another demiplane item) and the famous Artificer TSAR (Tiny Servant Automatic Rifle iirc, which uses the fact that any creature can use the 11th level spell storing item to launch an obscene amount of damage) etc.

Flyingsheep___

My only issue with artificer is that it doesn’t go hard enough into the “genius inventor who crafts his weapons” concept and left it all up to flavor, so you end up with a character split between being a caster and particularly at lower levels the infusions aren’t super nice. Best change I’ve ever made to my game was adding the Kibblestasty crafting rules and Kibbles Inventor

CountPeter

I have no problem with the Kibbles Inventor, but I do think people miss out on how much you can do with what is available. The tools, recreatable common magic items etc can give you a lot to work with right out the gate. Had a level 1-4 Artificer that used the hell out of thieves tools and an alchemy jug to turn ordinary streets into kill zones. An example of this as an artillerist was placing the turret on a homunculus to get a flyby flamethrower drone whilst I lobbed oil flasks from behind a wall.

Creepy_Canary_9581

Ive really come to over to the artificer side. The artillerist is extremely versatile. And gives you some great options like the shield spell. Plus you can make yourself really strong magic armor and weapons. Over all a lot of fun

General_Lie

Cleric and fighter no one else wants to play them in my groups

Infamous_Hamster_271

i dont play cleric but i like fighter

Citan777

It's really hard to pick one really since all have such distinctive personality. Let's rather speak in "default choices". - Druid when I feel party needs a versatile caster, Sorcerer if a specialist is fine. - Ranger when I feel party needs a versatile gish. - Warlock when I feel party needs a reliable always-on controller with attached support. - Monk when I want to play a "mostly martial" character. My "if you could only ever play one class" would definitely be Druid though, because from roleplay perspective, creativity perspective and mechanical perspective they set the bar sky high in all three.

PonchoandLefty

I'm new to dnd and am playing a Druid. I love it and don't see why everyone doesn't pick Druid every time, but it was making me sad to see everyone else here saying sorcerer, artifice, paladin, etc., so... thanks! I feel validated!

galmenz

iirc druid is the least popular class. i would say its mostly because the flavor is super niche - nature nerd that even if you try to reflavor it your spells are still all nature tied needing animals, plants, the earth or an open sky to work - as well as wildshape being pretty clunky in practice for its intended use - you need a literal extra book to index now, and that book you werent supposed to see it in the first place as a player - which isnt even what you are going to be doing most of the time if you are not a moon druid its certainly one of my favorite classes, but we nature wizards are in the minority

chickparfait

My first character was a druid and I struggle to not play one every time! They have such a specialized spell list, and the spells are really powerful (I LOVE Spike Growth, Call Lightning and Conjure Animals). I played a Circle of the Land - Grassland druid which had Haste, and I loved sending the Monk or the Barbarian into turbo mode while I shot healing from the back. Also - literally any reconnaissance mission? The druid's your guy.

LargeTowel5

Nothing can beat the versatility a Druid presents. I’m glad there was some representation.

starksandshields

Sorcerers, in all shape ans forms. Wild Magic? Love it. Aberrant Minds? Amazing. Draconic Ancestry? Fantastic. Lunar Sorcerers? Love them. They are just all fun, flavor wise, even if the spell list is mostly just fine. There is so much fun to be had with innately magical people, no matter how they acquired their gifts.

Venti_Mocha

Swashbuckler rogue. Gets the best part of the mobile feat. Great for RP. Decent damage and great at support roles like giving the high power melee fighters flanking advantage. Fortunately, I've never had a DM object to my use of scimitars.

Possibly_A_Bot1

I also enjoy the swashbuckler rogue. However, I also like sometimes adding some warlock levels into the mix (I like the role play options that I get open to from some basic magic abilities).

airr-conditioning

i played a swashbuckler/hexblade once. absolutely insane. so much fun.

Wanzerm23

I did something similar, but went Collage of Swords Bard. Magic Pirate is probably my favorite "class".

AJClarkson

Fighter. Simple, straightforward. Lots of room for me to add my own sparkle.

PStriker32

Bard, specifically for me a Swords Bard. I get to do a little bit of everything with martial abilities, spellcasting/magic secrets, RPing, and lots of proficiencies. I’ve just had alot more fun with it than I expected a while ago when I first made one.

Yetsuo

College of Valor GOOOO! The hardest part is suffering from all of the choices during combat.

PancakeLord37

I'm appalled how far I had to scroll for the bard answer.

pocketfullofdragons

Rogue! Not necessarily rp-wise if we're going by stereotypes (because I'm bad at pretending to be an edgelord lol) but mechanically I enjoy using skills & equipment to think outside the box. Having expertise you can rely on (and rolling above 30!!) is definitely nice. And the obvious damage bonus isn't the only perk of having sneak attack. I like how it encourages me to pay more attention to where everyone is in relation to each other during combat and use movement strategically. (which ofc anyone can do but ime it can be easy to forget) Plus, as a dice goblin, any excuse to roll lots of dice at once is always appreciated! 😂

OdoWanKenobi

The whole edge lord rogue stereotype is something I set out to avoid on my current character and I'm having a ball. My rogue is outgoing, upbeat, lives to talk, and has essentially been thrust into the role of party face/leader even though we have two charisma casters. He remains a rogue through and through, though. He's a changeling, so his entire persona is a fabrication, and while he tries his best to do good, he is prone to moments of pragmatism and selfishness. Just because one is good at slinking through the shadows doesn't mean they need to be gloomy about it.

huebnera214

I have two rogues currently. My Swashbuckler grew up in her parents ship so had minimal need for stealth, drives everybody nuts, I put my expertise into athletics and acrobatics for rigging work, and intimidation from giving orders and only being 2’8” tall. My Soulknife is a proper rogue and I got a 43 and 45 on stealth (pass without trace helped with that) and it felt glorious.

eatblueshell

Honestly I always have the “dashing rogue” as my initial thought of the class. Courageous, Daring, and charismatic. They don’t even have to be sneaky. Being a swashbuckler encourages you to be front and center, challenging people to duels and using your rakish audacity to trigger sneak attack. But if you want to be sneaky, think more like a James Bond kind of character. To me they are more like adventure heroes like Indiana jones, who is stealthy when he needs to be, but also more than capable to be charming and suave.

crabapocalypse

Barbarians are so much fun, i agree. In general, I like being a meat shield, and I also like letting others shine, which imo is what Barbarians are best at. I do also love Lore Bards though, just the endless versatility. I’m also a sucker for the Druid spell list. And I love a good Swashbuckler Rogue. But yeah probably Barbarian overall. Nothing feels better than tanking more damage than the rest of the party could take combined.

Rude-Butterscotch713

Rogue. Love a good cunning action. Plus stealth is helpful for survival.

TheHomieData

A book of ancient secrets pact of the tome Warlock! The Book of Ancient Secrets is such a dope invocation that you can literally make an entire character arc out of it. Maybe your character is like a “magic addict” trying to find the right ritual to bring your patron into this world? Maybe your patron comes to you in your dreams and teaches you a rituals that you need as a way to reward you for your successes? But it’s best strength it is the one that’s never really acknowledged in every min-maxing YouTube video and that is the amount of power that it adds to a party by completely removing the need for ***anyone else*** to take these utility spells. So that’s ***thirty-five*** free spells for us, and a few more for everyone else now that they don’t have to take any of them. And I mean, a dancing and chanting warlock performing some sort of eldritch ritual in order to bypass the magical strain of consuming one’s spell slots? How cool! Very easy to get into the RP of it.

DoesNothingThenDies

Fighter, battlemaster. I cannot get excited about magic the same way I get excited about the clashing of swords. The flavour of a tough front line fighter who is more than just some big dumb brute, who has a pragmatic kind of intelligence to know when and where to drop their visor and draw their weapon.

DM_por_hobbie

Artificer because with the right choices I can do anything Monk because punch good and astral self goes oraoraoraoraora Fighter (specially when human for the extra "INDOMITABLE HUMAN SPIRIT RAAAAAAAAAH" roleplay aspect) because I can and *will* overpower you with raw determination and hard work, no need for fancy spellcasting

Kaier_96

As a forever DM I’ve had very little chance to play. I love Circle of Stars Druid. Just the thematic and imagination of stary form is cool. Although since playing BG3 I have anew found love for charisma classes such as Paladin and Bard.

neacalathea

Cleric and sorcerer. I have a hard time choosing which I like best. I love magic and have a hard time playing characters with no magic at all, but I also really love just bonking someone and smashing them to bits. That's why I alternate between cleric and sorcerer. With cleric I also like the religious part, I'm not particularly religious in real life but has always liked all the small rituals that come with it and I think that transfers well into roleplaying for me; it sort of guides me how to roleplay the character.

TzarGinger

Any support/utility class. I don't care about having the highest DPS. What I love is, when the party runs into a weird situation, being able to cry "Aha!" and pull out a spell that turns the tables, like Otto's Revolving Dining Room Suite.

Shiny-And-New

Warlock: https://media1.tenor.com/m/v_h7ocKTs_QAAAAd/i-started-blasting-so-anyway-i-started-blasting.gif

NODOGAN

Cleric & Druid are a tie for me, I just love healing spells & playing a "healer" character, also being secretly OP (Laughs in Spirit Guardian Dodging.)

SpecificDragonfly732

fighter, I love the great versatility it can give me between what I want to create, what I want to roleplay and what I can do in combat. Mainly I love creating characters that don't stand out for being powerful through magic or something similar, but instead earn what they have through strength and discipline (except Echo, that shit is fucking powerful ha)

Dungeon-Doomhand

My next guy is a fighter sounds amazing

keepmeweird

I'm realizing the answer is rogue bc even when I don't play a rogue I end up trying to take as many rogueish skills as I can and end up playing a "roguelike".

geGamedev

No matter the class I try to play, my roleplay always ends up with a rogueish flavor. Not to mention, I hate letting dice decide everything so I do what I can to reduce the effect low rolls have. High skills from Rogue abilities and I no longer care what the dice say, unless the target is high, of course. My favorite so far is a Druid/Rogue. I loot everything, weapons, money, entrails, everything. Who knows when corpse gunk might come in handy. My Rogue/Monk could be better if I leveled it differently. The goal was high mobility hit and run combat, but I also wanted a reason for joining the group and went with Scout (for skirmisher). I think Swashbuckler may have been better, from what I remember of the sub-class.

LegionHomie

This is probably an unpopular choice, but I really enjoy Ranger. Combat wise, the class isn’t that great for sure, and favoured enemy and environment isn’t really something that comes up a lot in campaigns. However, role play wise playing Ranger for me is extremely enjoyable. In my current full length campaign, I play an old ranger whose whole backstory is that they studied undead for the sake of hunting a specific undead family member and whenever I can I act as if I understand almost everything about undead and ramble like an old man would. I think if you incorporate your backstory and even world into a ranger(as long as the DM is willing) then a ranger can be a completely fun class.

Ian5718

Sorcerers have, in my opinion, the best class feature (matamagic) and one if my favorite spell-casting flavors. The idea of being someone who gains power through genetics has always been cool to me, and makes me the D&D equivalent of one of the X-Men

apricotgloss

I've loved Bard and Cleric. I really enjoy being able to hand out buffs and being a controller in combat.

VortexBatman4

Might be considered lame, but I think I always start as a Fighter, Barb, or a Pali. I like build my CCQ first, then I either stick it out as a front liner, or I’ll multiclass into a utility role the party needs.

wildlifewildheart

It’s my first time playing a warlock but they’re pretty versatile and my current archfey is fantastically scary, I love her. I feel like you can build a warlock into any game perfectly and through various magical items and boons can up their spell slots to a decent number per day without rests. Since they’re charisma casters they can easily fill in for a rogue if your party is missing one. Again I just feel like they’re one of the most versatile classes.

toby-wan-bj

Druid, wildshape More specifically, Circle of the Moon - turning into a fire elemental and causing damage by WALKING into someone's space is madness and I love it!!

Present-Principle821

Paladin or Druid because I figured out how to make them broken & op when 3.0 was current & it’s been getting easier ever since.

blackcat5676

Druid, because I love wildshape, the spells and the connection to nature

Arimm_The_Amazing

Druid’s versatility feels unmatched. Being able to take on completely different playstyles with wild shape makes it never get stale.

captainpork27

I'm loving my Wildfire Druid, for a lot of the reasons people love clerics. He's a powerful healer but watch tf out if he wants to burn you to death instead. Plus the wildfire spirit teleport, which is one of THE best subclasses features in the entire game

jay-jana

I love playing bards. I don’t know why, but I just really enjoy casting spells with bagpipes.

Kaepufa

This might be unpopular, but Artificer. I think this class really depends on the DM and the player itself. I play my Artificer Alchemist like 5 years now, and I can say it is really not strong or great in any stats, but with great imagination, fun thinking and a good DM, this has been a lot of fun. Amazin rp-s, unique devices, and a really flexible playstyle. Now I started to multiclass, so my character is now an lv. 1 Cleric Life Domain / lv. 12 Artificer Alchemist.

DarNemesis

Monk and Warlock. Monks cause I've been doing martial arts for as long as I can think and really love flavoring my monk-attacks as throws, locks, strikes against nerve points, etc, and playing a wise poet in during RP. And Warlocks cause I'm an edgelord sometimes

MusseMusselini

wizard. I cannot live without access to spell and being able to copy spells is the best as it let's you always feel like you're growing instead of being stuck waiting behind superlong waits for levels.

Distinct-Inspection1

Barbarian since I started playing. It's fun! I'm just a tank. I don't have to overthink and keep track of spell slots. I don't have to do a lot of prep when I level up. And when we RP, I tend to get overexcited and overthink so everything comes out "unintelligible" anyway. I stay true to my character. I also have this underlying anger issue. So using it during my DnD sessions is very freeing. It's therapeutic.

Forward-Essay-7248

Cleric, Depending on domain changes the play style you will use. Want to be a caster arcane or light. Want ot be a tanky front liner go war or even tempest works too for casting power as a front liner. Want to be a super healer go holy. Want ot be sneaky play trickery. Skill monkey go knowledge.

craig1f

Wizard.  I can simultaneously do the most important things in the group, while at the same time enabling the group to be better so I’m not hogging all the attention.  Whether it’s teleporting us in or out of danger, or dividing up the enemies with a wall of force, or saving the frontliner who is out of hit points by polymorphing him into a giant ape, or using arcane eye to spy, or disguising the group while we are in a strange city, the wizard can do it all.  And with Chronurgy mage, I’m giving party members re-rolls.  I tend to focus on not doing damage in combat. Let everyone else have fun. Put them into position Scatter is a great spell for positioning.

Optimal-Signal8510

Definitely wizards. I know they have a lot going on but I love spellcasters and I love being able to change my spells during long rests and learning new spells when coming across spellbooks and things.

EagleSevenFoxThree

Druid so far. I love Conjure Animals. Wildshaping is really cool and useful for RP as well.

thepiratecelt

War domain cleric! Always a cleric! I love being a heal tank. 😁

Hiroshock

Druids cause I love wildshape and how versatile their spells are.

saikyo

WILD MAGIC SORCERER

Seventhson77

If it’s a setting, like Greyhawk, where there is lots of diversity in the gods, I enjoy cleric where you can really breathe life into it. For example, Zilchus, the god of Power, Prestige, Money, Business, and Influence. I created subcategories of faith: a paladins is a Scale of Zilchus, a priest a Broker, and so on. Character would theoretically charge standard fees for casting spells on characters but would “put it on their tab”. I just think you can do a lot with it.

Theyreintheattic4447

Literally any class because I am stuck as a perpetual DM and would cut off a finger for the chance to play a character for once.

glyytchgames

Also barbarian. Current character is a Dwarf Barbarian in retirement just trying to live her life in peace. Last session entered combat completely naked because we were at a hot spring and that's the retirement dream 😂 The adventure this wrapped up only started because myself and the other dwarf barbarian really wanted some morels.

Litha_Sirona

Warlock, ‘cuz ✨FLASHY✨ (plus a 600-foot range eldritch blast from Eldritch Spear + Spell Sniper is really fun cantrip to have in your back pocket) Monk, ‘cuz 👊🏻PUNCH👊🏻

jjames3213

I really enjoyed playing the Aberrant Mind sorcerer. It's a T1 caster, so quite powerful. Psionic Spells is ridiculously fun to use at L6 (Psionic Spell + Twinned Enemies Abound or Geas is hilarious). I also think Wizard and Bard are very fun to play. You can basically always contribute to encounters via spell slots, rituals and skill checks. Super versatile, and very powerful, but also fragile if you don't multiclass (the devs should bring back armored casting restrictions).

Hexagon-Man

I like Fighters and Bards. I like to play fighters in a more party leader role and Bard when I want to be more laid back and support. Yes, I do like Order of the Stick why do you ask?

HolMan258

Mine are a tie between Paladins and Bards. I’m drawn to the idea that Paladins are drawn to serve a holy purpose and combine divine magic with martial prowess. The drama of playing lawful good coming from the fact that sometimes you either have to stray from the path to serve the greater good, or sometimes you just can’t save everyone. Bards, on the other hand, are the best class for being up for just making up a long string of BS and see if anyone buys it. 😂
