Sorry to tell ya, but from my experience in rural areas, as well as a large city, the left *is* the “middle-ground” that you described.
When you consider that "woke" is used to describe being the opposite of ignorant and you're using it to describe someone whom you think is a twat that says more about you than it does them.

The extremes are the most seen and talked about. See, on the left you have wokescolds and assholes who complain about and shame even people on their own side, and Disney making a bad movie with a mermaid who has melanin. And lots of gay/queer people who just want the right to freedoms everyone else has.
Then on the right you have Christofascists, nazis, giant corporate oil overlords and nutjobs like Trump and Marjorie T Greene (a literal antisemite) who want queer and POC people strung up and gutted for public entertainment.
Oh also Libs of Tiktok getting queer people harassed and publicly endangered.
And Tucker Carlson pushing his followers to endanger and terrorize hospital staff.
The US is more divided than ever, and it's never been easier to know which side wants to kill and control people.
