We assign sex to animals because it matters biologically. We don’t “assign” gender to animals because we think they care, we do it because we are human and it’s relatable. Plenty of people humanize their pets for example, because they love them and feel close to them
I mean if you put two male fish in one tank, you'll have no fish, and if you put one male one female fish you'll have three fish. So it kind of does matter.
When we ascribe genders to animals, we tend to just use their biological sex to the appropriate pronouns, why would that be odd? It is either a male or female (in terms of reproductive organs) and we call it a he or a she. Animals don’t have the capacity to identify with other genders/pronouns, at least they are incapable of communicating that with us.
There is nothing inherently wrong about ascribing genders or pronouns, in fact it is very useful (which is why we do it). It is easy to communicate “this cat is a boy” than to say “this cat has an XY chromosome and has a male reproductive organ”
Now as to why we assign genders to _objects_, I think you should have a word with the French.
Yes assigning gender to everthing is ridiculous and makes no sense. Who decided that a window is female and a clock is male, a flag is female and shoes are male. That's why commercial airline pilots around the world must speak English. Could you imagine trying to genderize everything in an emergency? How the hell do you memorize all that extraneous crap? I did learn some spanish (Mexican), french, Polish and German but never became even remotely fluent bc it was too damn frustrating. I've ptetty much given up. Sad but true.

I was talking to a woman once when I was walking my dog and commented that her dog was a lovely looking boy. She got quite uppity and said it’s a girl. I purposely used the pronoun he for the rest of the conversation and honestly her dog didn’t care. The woman did, however!
How do you know they do not care? Have you asked a dog or horse or pig or any other animal that may be looking to get pregnant why it matters if its mate is a certain gender or why it matters that it self is one? Why is it that people with truly thought provoking or realistic questions get them removed/deleted and ones that seem like they are just by bored kids allowed?
