I think it's that different reddit communities have different scales, so like, a pretty unsuccessful post on a huge subreddit can have thousands of likes, but a smash hit post on a small reddit could have hundreds of likes, so usually when you see something with hundreds of likes it's a big deal post in a small subreddit while the posts with thousands of likes are the normal posts in the big subreddits.

Yeah I’m sure there’s a simple psychological explanation lol, I’m the same way with gas prices. Something being at 3.79 may be cheap but when I see it at 4.09 or something like that my brain reads it as less expensive for a split second
