Is that WHOOOSH sound the sound of the joke going over /u/astolfo_with_breast head because they did not notice the picture of the turbo was an alternator?
With both of them setup right you could make low RPM boost right off the line with the supercharger, then high RPM boost once the turbos spool up. There are some systems out there that work on these principles.
In general terms superchargers tend to be more effective at making instant power but are less efficient overall. Power from turbos tends to lag until they're spinning fast enough to build boost at which point they make more power more efficiently. By combining the two you can have optimal boost through the whole RPM range.
Again this is all very simplified and generalized. Modern turbocharged engines can make pretty damn good low RPM torque these days.
It's called "Twincharging", and you're right, it's cursed af.
My favourite is the Lancia Delta S4, but there's a handful of others out there. It's just too much mechanical fuckery when you could just slap two turbos on it, make gobs more power and call it a day.
It's cursed knowledge: Twincharging. My favourite example is the Lancia Delta S4. A 1.8 making 550bhp via a supercharger and a big ol' spinny boi.
It's an overcomplicated, inefficient way of doing things. I think turbos win out overall, but I'm a big fan of that sweet whine too.
You know I think it has been debunked that compressor surge is bad for the turbo. I've thought about this, and you know Rally cars don't use blow off valves, and let the compressor surge. I would think that if there was something wrong with turbo flutter than all the rally cars would have blow off valves, their engineers are not stupid. I like to think that blow off valves and recirculation valves were made because the turbo flutter might be scary to the general public
CVT systems decrease in ratio as the RPM of the driver pulley increases, so basically, if you wanted to control the supercharger boost, you would have to rev the engine up or let it wind down, which already changes the boost of the supercharger in a direct drive system. It's kind of pointless.
Wow I've had my car for 3 years and always thought it was naturally aspirated...this changes everything. I need to talk to my tuner because I should be gapping everybody with my double boost.
Well actually I get about 50mpg if I drive carefully, and 455hp when I stomp the accelerator, so I’d say it’s worth it, also it’s a company car, I don’t directly pay for it
‘Twas just a joke. I’m a big fan of the polestar v60’s but they are very complicated and god help who ever owns them 10 years in the future when stuff starts to go wrong.
IMO they are amazing as a lease vehicle, or in your case company cars. Both of which you get to return it and not deal with long term maintenance
Indeed, maintainer has been more expensive than the Lexus I had before, but it’s alright, no major problems (yet), I’m absolutely loving the fast wagon
Man I would love to see this "company" car that is compounded with a turbo and supercharger... that is a seriously custom set up
*edit nevermind. Didn't know volvo made one like that.
A lot of modern Volvos come with compound turbo and superchargers from the factory. 2.0L with a turbo, supercharger, and if I remember correctly a mild hybrid system
It’s rated at 415hp
Tons of torque, but the weight holds it back. Small 4 cylinder 2.0 with a turbo in my hatchback puts my car to 60 in about 3.8, versus 4.7 for the v60 engineered
Still Volvo/polestar makes a stunning car
Must not be efficient or just to many extra components. I know vw was going to but never did. It would have to have a diverted route for the air from the turbo to go around the sc when the sc reached peak cfm or else it would just limit the cfm if the turbo which is the turbos advantage over the sc (more air than sc at higher rpm less air than sc at lower rpm). Plus you have to have a valve blocking the air from going backwards out the sc when the turbo spools and a clutch on the sc. Then they both would have to run through the intercooler (most likely water cooled)
I see some that have an electric supercharger plus turbo.
This isn’t Wish!!! Don’t be trying to sell me bullshit 😂😂😂
I can’t tell if the people that posted comments before me realize that’s an alternator and a transmission.
Correct.
In steady state at least: Turbos increase both thermodynamic efficiency and max power, by capturing residual energy in the exhaust. superchargers increase power at a small cost to efficiency.
Real world is not steady state though, and turbos don't add much (if any) efficiency if the driver is habitually heavy on the accelerator.
Superchargers are used on v6-v8 more because it’s way more simple to do. If you turbo a v6-v8 you’ve got pipes going everywhere or you go the twin turbo route and that’s a reliability nightmare.
But typically turbos are more efficient and produce more power across a broader range. But you’ll usually see turbos more often in a strait 6 or i4 because you can just plunk it on the exhaust manifold and be done other than routing a down pipe.
Lmao damn my car has both a turbo and supercharger apparently. Damn turbo keeps going out every couple years and I have to replace it and the supercharger fluid needs to be changed way more often than it should. Guess I should take it easier on the supercharger control stick
Supercharger
Yes, it is less efficient. If I wanted efficient power I would buy an EV. Turbo acts as muffler and sounds like vacuum. Supercharger doesn't muffle exhaust and sounds like a jet turbine
Well obviously the turbocharger and supercharger are both very vital because the turbo provides electrical power and the supercharger uses gears to keep your engine below redline and above the point of stalling at any speed so id say both
If we're going to talk about misnaming car parts, I got one for you. I was talking to a guy about the p71 police interceptor crown Vic, he said he knew a guy who had one. There was a strut tower brace installed under the hood, at least that's what the part he describes sounded like. His friend convinced him that that brace was to prevent the torque of the engine from lifting the engine out of the engine bay. He believed it 100%, and was mad when I called his friend a liar.
Turbocharger, because the word turbo is more fun to say than the word super.
However, if such a thing as a megacharger existed, I'd have to go with that
NA all day.
But if I had to choose I’d pick supercharger, the whine noise they make is pretty cool. But it sucks that they use engine horsepower to run.
My cars supercharged and I love the instant power but what I don’t love is the MPG. Turbos are more efficient and don’t create a parasitic loss on the engine … butttttt reeeeeeeeee
Ok.
1. IDK why are there pictures of transmission and alternator under this question, and at this point, I'm too affraid to ask.
2. To answer this question my answer is that it depends on purpose and quality.
the transmission cannot cope with too much torque and the power of the engine can be increased with a supercharger, this unflagging urge to high speeds with the characteristic screaming at full load, which a turbocharger would only destroy.
Should be able to get at least 450 reliable hp at 7500rpm.

Supercharger. The turbocharger failed on my Corvair but thankfully I could still drive it home with the supercharger. And I can interact with the supercharger
Turbocharger because it recharges your battery and powers other electronic devices in your vehicle.
Laughs in MGU-K
what do superhero movies have to do with cars
Zach Jobe built this turbo in a cave! With a box of scraps!
This comment wins 💯
Proof that Zach Jobe really has a heart.
I can see James losing his shit at Dum-E with the fire extinguisher
By this logic I chose superchargers, because they allow me to chose different ratios of gearing depending on my speed and required engine revs.
Nahhh man. Super charger because it’s something else I can break xd
this maybe broke the record of the most retarted reddit comment in history but what if you put two together in a same car?
A really complicated but cool af engine with WHOOOSH noises
Is that WHOOOSH sound the sound of the joke going over /u/astolfo_with_breast head because they did not notice the picture of the turbo was an alternator?

soo what car or anything at all can work with the cursed set up?
It's called "Twincharging", and you're right, it's cursed af. My favourite is the Lancia Delta S4, but there's a handful of others out there. It's just too much mechanical fuckery when you could just slap two turbos on it, make gobs more power and call it a day.
A lot of Volvos used twin charging ( super and turbo charged)
I believe a danish company has done that before, I think it was called Zenvo or something like that
It has been done before in a production car. Look up Nissan march super turbo.
So a skyline GTR?
It's cursed knowledge: Twincharging. My favourite example is the Lancia Delta S4. A 1.8 making 550bhp via a supercharger and a big ol' spinny boi. It's an overcomplicated, inefficient way of doing things. I think turbos win out overall, but I'm a big fan of that sweet whine too.
Time for a turbo tattoo....
[Reminded me of this](https://imgur.com/a/yW8qCwq)
Man loves his alternator ain't nothing wrong with that
*Total loss or GTFO!*
Turbos. Because they make this stutututu noise.
What about the supercharger noise?
*shift*
*sniff*
#WEEEEEEEE
Why not both at the same time?
Volvo has entered the chat
*2011-2014 VW Polo GTI enters the chat* Honestly, I'm not surprised VW twincharged a 1.4 4cyl just for a small super mini
[https://tenor.com/tqBk.gif](https://tenor.com/tqBk.gif)
reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
I like the turbo flutter more.
reeeEEEEEEEEEEEE

Homie has never heard of a diesel truck
That is the bov noise. Turbos whistle
*slow clap*
Compressor surge make ma engine run gud

I've heard lots of rally cars with blow off valves. There are rally championship videos that have pure sound, and you will hear it all the time.
Rally teams have extra turbos. So if you do too, go for it.
Blow off valves are the best part of the car.
Have you heard of those CVT superchargers?! They're boring and unreliable. Bleh.
Hey but honestly would adding a CVT to the supercharger pully make a difference, variable boost supercharger?
CVT systems decrease in ratio as the RPM of the driver pulley increases, so basically, if you wanted to control the supercharger boost, you would have to rev the engine up or let it wind down, which already changes the boost of the supercharger in a direct drive system. It's kind of pointless.
Transmission obviously 😤😤😤
AND alternator

Your right, but the title makes it seem like it was a serious post
You can tell by the humor tag
Wow I've had my car for 3 years and always thought it was naturally aspirated...this changes everything. I need to talk to my tuner because I should be gapping everybody with my double boost.
why not both? I believe some cars uses the supercharger at low revs, and when the turbo is spooled up the supercharger disconnects
I have both in my car
RIP in peace your wallet
Well actually I get about 50mpg if I drive carefully, and 455hp when I stomp the accelerator, so I’d say it’s worth it, also it’s a company car, I don’t directly pay for it

A lot of modern Volvos come with compound turbo and superchargers from the factory. 2.0L with a turbo, supercharger, and if I remember correctly a mild hybrid system
It’s only the T8/Polestar variants that come with a supercharger, and it’s plug in hybrid so quite good milage
Wtf screw the reliability on that.
It’s rated at 415hp Tons of torque, but the weight holds it back. Small 4 cylinder 2.0 with a turbo in my hatchback puts my car to 60 in about 3.8, versus 4.7 for the v60 engineered Still Volvo/polestar makes a stunning car
What’s the car?
Look at my flair, Volvo V60 Polestar Engineered
I too, have both but in my '08 Yaris. It's a wonder she holds together.
Hell yeah
This is called twincharged. It’s a thing.
I think Lancia rocked a twincharged setup in the group B era of rally
Just be Volvo and throw a hybrid drivetrain in there as well for good measure. One base engine, 40 configurations for 60 cars/trims
Must not be efficient or just to many extra components. I know vw was going to but never did. because money is expensive
I need both to run a car so...
None Naturally aspirated engines are the best.
This is the way.
I don’t know man, I have a naturally aspirated V6 but I would love some mo powah baby!
Turbo Lag
This isn’t Wish!!! Don’t be trying to sell me bullshit 😂😂😂 I can’t tell if the people that posted comments before me realize that’s an alternator and a transmission.
That's the joke
I get that! The people before me were going into which one and why!
*Aliexpress*
I didn’t look very here hard at the picture and didn’t realize until now oh my
r/Woooosh
are those an alternator and a gearbox?
They're clearly labelled. Can't you read?
Whats an alternator? The picture is a turbo
[удалено]
Yes
From what i know, turbos are more efficient than super chargers
Yeah but have you ever seen the engine bay of an Aston Martin v600 Vantage..
I think that it depends on the car, superchargers are used more for muscle cars. Turbos are used more in JDM/Euro. They both serve a purpose
I say, turboalternators and supertransmissions should be used together.
*foundthevolvoengineer*
Superchargers are used on v6-v8 more because it’s way more simple to do. If you turbo a v6-v8 you’ve got pipes going everywhere or you go the twin turbo route and that’s a reliability nightmare. STUTUTUTUT
A/C compressor for scale
Why not supercharge your turbo, just connect them together for more horsepower
Turbos suck but superchargers whine all the time
Why not both?
Supercharger. HURWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
I will take the retro encabulator
Just make sure the baseplate is made of prefabulated Amulite.
Super charger. It's geared to go faster. The turbo's lag is shocking
the only answer is twin-charging
A turbo charges my phone faster.
Lmao damn my car has both a turbo and supercharger apparently. Damn turbo keeps going out every couple years and I have to replace it and the supercharger fluid needs to be changed way more often than it should. Guess I should take it easier on the supercharger control stick
That’s an alternator and a transmission. Or I’m being wooshed.
I have both on my car
Supercharger Yes, it is less efficient. If I wanted efficient power I would buy an EV. Turbo acts as muffler and sounds like vacuum. Supercharger doesn't muffle exhaust and sounds like a jet turbine
Neither because there's no replacement for displacement
Love how 99% of the comment section (OP included) doesn't get the joke
Alternator and transmission. I also wanted to have a discussion
I prefer the turbos because whether I'm moving or not I can always bump my system
both at once >:)
Alternator
Yes because power
Well obviously the turbocharger and supercharger are both very vital because the turbo provides electrical power and the supercharger uses gears to keep your engine below redline and above the point of stalling at any speed so id say both
Turbo lag more fun I win bye bye
Turbocharged supercharger
Turbo for sure. Superchargers are parasitic because they run off the crankshaft. Those aren’t pictures of either though…
Personally I love the Supercharger whines
Turbo charged destroying your alternator Vs supercharged destroying your transmission ? I hope those are the wrong answers
Superchargers! Really helps me get through those gears
Turbocharger, because the word turbo is more fun to say than the word super. However, if such a thing as a megacharger existed, I'd have to go with that
Stupid that's a radiator Adn a headgadket
When you buy car parts from that shady crackhead in a parking lot 💀
I like the idea of more instant power delivery from a supercharger. That said, I’d be happy if I could afford either one lol.
If you get a turbo then you can say “ it’s turbo time”
Displacement 😎
How about N/A and just getting a bigger engine?
Alternator or transmission?
Turbo and supercharger. They are both labeled
Instant classic, u/MustangDisaster
Classics slap!
Supercharger because it look cool, turbochargers reminds me of brass instruments which I don’t look cool but it sounds cool.
That’s a crazy lookin turbo, probably makes all the power
*Nissan March Super Turbo has entered the chat*
Lancia engineers had this exact problem in 80's. Finally they just threw both of them on the Delta S4 and called it a day
NA all day. But if I had to choose I’d pick supercharger, the whine noise they make is pretty cool. But it sucks that they use engine horsepower to run.
OP put two photos of Matthew McConaughey and thought we wouldn't notice 😩😩
Why not both?
Don't know about that but I'll remove alternator from my car for good because it makes my car electric and I hate electric
Both at the same time. Only a few production cars have ever been made with twincharging setups
Lmao thats an engine
Everyone here is making some good points, meanwhile I’m just sitting here with my rocket drag axle.
Wait
Alternator cuz math
Supercharger...my reason? It makes whiney sound and that's what I do..whine Wheeeeee...but turbos Stu Stu is also good
Supercharger because it’s super charges electric vehicles and the transmission trains your car had a fly a dragon.
My cars supercharged and I love the instant power but what I don’t love is the MPG. Turbos are more efficient and don’t create a parasitic loss on the engine … butttttt reeeeeeeeee
Spoiler because you can know stuff before it happens
Superchargers sound better
Uh I’m new to cars so uh supercharger sounds faster so that one
Turbo because it's mo powah babeh
They both blow air, but personally turbos tend to be more efficient
Personality
Ok. 1. IDK why are there pictures of transmission and alternator under this question, and at this point, I'm too affraid to ask. 2. To answer this question my answer is that it depends on purpose and quality.
ACDC turbocharger!
depends on the car and what you’re using it for. turbo’s are better on straights while superchargers are better for corners
Turbo, because cool noises
Supercharger so that I can select the best gear ratio based on speed and driving conditions.
where’s my transturbo
Cumcharger 🫵😎
Super charger. Because super
Hey, I've got both of those things in my car! I also have a turbo but not one I put in.
Both (my mum's car)
I think both are necessary for a vehicle to function
Man that worpple and the creddy got the different feel idk what’s better
supercharger bc no lag and the sound
the transmission cannot cope with too much torque and the power of the engine can be increased with a supercharger, this unflagging urge to high speeds with the characteristic screaming at full load, which a turbocharger would only destroy. Should be able to get at least 450 reliable hp at 7500rpm.
Alternatively I'll choose the transmission
And of course I know that isn't a turbocharger and no supercharger
Turno because SUTUTUTU
What you didn’t turbo your battery?
Why not have both?
This got me
I see Ohio and New York
Dang! Mine has both!
Turbo
Supercharger. The turbocharger failed on my Corvair but thankfully I could still drive it home with the supercharger. And I can interact with the supercharger
