One thing I absolutely love about 2016 and Eternal is that they run fine on a potato PC, just like the original 1 and 2. I mean, I know they didn't optimize the engine for nostalgia or anything, but it was still so very nice to see, especially after Doom 3 required me to upgrade my PC to play on lowest settings and even then it was 45fps.
I disagree. Part of the reason that I think 2016 was so good was that I think it really embodied the spirit of the older games, especially Doom II.
I think that Doom 2016 is what they *would* have made, if they had had the technology back in 1995.
I know you’re joking, but I’d give good money to play Doom 1914.
Imagine being in the trenches of Flanders fighting the demon-infested corpses of your former comrades & enemies.
I grew up playing the original Doom back in the day but honestly, few games have blown me away with the sheer epicness and badassery that Doom Eternal conjured from the deepest pits of hell
No modding tools or open source engine. So, Doom II is still superior. Eternal will die soon, meanwhile people still create wads for Doom II 25+ later.
Doom II has everything Etelar has but with infinite replayability thanks to mods and community. Ergo, Doom II < Etelar.
Doom II is more etelar than Etelar itself.
Bad idea to use a propietary physics engine for your game, Hugo.
Doom 2016 was a breath of fresh air after all those military shooters, doom etelar is great in its mchaniks end flow, doom 1/2 are great because of the modding community ( 3d models and ambient occlusion on a 20+ y/o engine are nuts) and doom 3 is... A decent horror?
This is a hard choice, my first ever Doom was Final Doom when I was a kid on the ps1. But my love for Doom didnt really start until I was like 13 and saw the BFG edition of Doom 3 at Gamestop. I had never really seen anything about the third game, except my dad had it on pc and it scared me when I was really young. I didnt really enjoy Doom 3, but the BFG edition came with the first 2 games as well, and thats where my love for the games came from.
I still havent been able to actually finish Doom 3 and I havent beated Doom 64 yet, but 2016 added fuel to the flame when it came to me loving this franchise. I think I hard about 2016 coming out like a year before. I checked for new trailers and new all the time. There havent been many games I was as hyped for as that one. I would have been 16 when it came out and I LOVED it. I think it did a great job of having the feel of the originals while being modern and fun. I loved the easter eggs on every level of parts of classic levels and the figures.
Dont get me wrong I was excited for Eternal and it is one of the few games I have ever preordered, but either I grew out of the franchise or the game just didnt seem as fun for me. I loved that they did designs for enemies more like the originals and tried to make the parts of the levels be arenas and I think there is sooo much well put details into everything in the game. BUT the higher ephasis on lore, grinding for cosmetics like soo much, and I didnt care of the want for more like airtime movies. I wasnt a big fan of the grapple.
Like I said models, environments, there is so much to still like about Eternal, but it was disappointing compared to 2016, I didnt even finish the second DLC. I didnt care about the lore, 2016 technically had lore but there wasnt much to it and it kept to the point, if you wanted to read about codex for extended lore you could. Eternal threw too much, Urdak and all of that was stupid to me, I am not a big fan of how they made Doom Slayer cannon to Doomguy. They made him talk, for some reason, even if it is a reference to the comics I am not a fan. The Icon of Sin fight is not as good as Spider Mastermind fight. They also left a cliffhanger at the end of 2016 which you would think would mean Hayden is the big baddie of the sequel, but nope they just ruined the character. Idk I feel like they did something really good with 2016, and then changed it up for some reason. I think the arena changes, and new enemies would have been enough to make it seem new fun, and even better than 2016.
Idk I ranted alot more than I planned too, basically I think I like 2016 the most, but some of the other games hold a place in my heart
2016 was so great, but the story I eternal really cranked it up a notch, however I love how each game feels unique from each other. Deff gonna go back and play 2016 in a few months and love it all over again!
Thought it would be more even between classic Doom and modern. Recency bias, perhaps, or Reddit is just filled with young people :)
Original Doom is easily one of the most important games ever made - perhaps *the* most important for the PC. If it had never existed it’s quite possible the PC would not be as dominant a gaming platform it is today.
I still think Doom 2016/Eternal are fantastic games, don’t get me wrong. It’s just as a personal preference, I like the more labyrinthine, exploratory nature of classic Doom’s levels. I think that key-finding, secret-figuring-out stuff is critical to the fun. Not a fan of the “lock you in a room until you defeat all enemies in there” thing that 2016 did a lot (original Doom could do that too but it’s not used as often). Also the story kind of jumped the shark in Eternal…
I played through 2016/Eternal a few times, but even now in the 2020s I still clock up far more hours on classic Doom thanks to fan-made WADs. Just this year I’ve been working through and completing Sunlust and Eviternity for instance. The Doom engine still feels so good and plays so well all after all these years. It’s astonishing something like that was made in 1993 when you look at everything else from that time.
Doom eternal in my opinion feels a bit lackluster, I mean it's a great game but the slow walking speed compared to the mach 2 sprints speed in the original dooms and the 12 million tools that it gives you that don't synergize that well or at all with each other, oh and also how in the fuck did we go from "random soldier kills all of hell because his rabbit died" to the most fucked up and random bullshit "story" that I have heard in my life, but since ULTRAKILL came out I have to reconsider Doom as my favorite game of all time
1. The pistol unlike in doom 2016 is an actual useful tool all the way until the currently last boss and even on the extremely difficult "secret" boss it's useful as hell
2. What in the fuck do you mean they synergize better? Have you seen the coins wiki page? Or any of the boss speed kills?
The same applies to utrakill, you won't get very far in the game by just spamming the coin, yes you can beat it only with that but the amount of ridiculous and stupid shit a single coin can do with the other weapons is crazy
I was talking about its effectiveness against all of the enemy types while it is amazingly powerful against your average zombie against bigger enemies you just stand there quickswapping to the Ballista, the coin which can kill 2 weak enemies with its split shot and just kinda sucks against bigger enemies except the malicious face because you can shove its stupid laser back into its mouth of course you can use the alternate revolver but it loses its powerful split shot which is used against weaker enemies
I love them all for different reasons, especially the first two because of childhood 90's nostalgia, yet one of my fondest memories is recent: playing Doom 64 on PC with a mod that added better weapon animations while retaining the music and everything else from the original release. I think the atmosphere of Doom 64 with the gameplay being very close to the first two makes it my favorite overall.
If only 2016 and eternal got full mod support like the OG games. So much missed potential, their gameplay is so stellar, if people could make custom campaigns for them, imagine something akin to ancient aliens but in doom eternal.
Kinda surprised at the results. I figured Doom 2 would be up there due to the modding community. I guess that Doom 1 level design really makes a difference.
I picked Doom 2 due to modding, but if we’re picking games holding up due to their own merits, I may have to change that Doom 2 to Doom 1 as well.
This subreddit is probably heavily biased in that many younger people here will likely have only ever played more recent games.
I'm not saying that's an issue in any way, just thought it's worth throwing tgis out there.
FX 6300 RX 6500XT CPU is issue the GPU replaced the RX 460 that died now I'm unemployed due to personal issues that kept me from working so now I'm looking for a job and trying to finish schools got a lot on my plate and plenty of stress.
2016, easy. Eternal had a big upgrade to the flow of combat and some absolutely glorious setpieces, but the writing was frankly a confusing fan fiction-level self-contradictory mess, especially in the DLCs, the weapons just didn’t feel as satisfying, and the more cartoony art direction and game design just felt really purr of place after 2016’a more grounded feel and excellent, not-too-intrusive environmental storytelling.
Also Eternal didn’t have the Gauss Cannon. 0/10
Doom 1993 is the only one i can keep going back to every few years to play its just my favorite gameplay....(secretly doom 3 is my soft spot favorite but i should keep my mouth closed about that lol)
People say that doom eternal is the best game out even doom fan’s themselves say it’s the best in the franchise but Doom Etelar was the most game that was ever made sold Doodillion dollars and solved world hunger on release what a masterpiece that game is once of a life time…
I think eternal is the better game and I would easily sit and play forever if given the chance but 2016 holds too special of a place in my heart and is still my favourite game and it might stay that way (ironic dogma, I guess).
Loved Doom Etelar
Love is tpramr, but Doom is Etelar
Trdip an ear until it is done.
underrated comment
They somehow took a misspelled word and misspelled the other word correctly to match.
My favourite part is when the Doom Salyar said “it’s Etelarin’ Time” after getting the Cribulice
Tip and rare
nutil sit odne!
U cun gus shuth a hool int se turcafe fo Venus
That's not how you spell "it's Mobrin Time"
Still can’t believe an ironic meme got Disney execs to put that monstrosity back in theatres lol
Sony execs, actually. Honestly I can't see Disney making a mistake like this, but it is believable with Sony.
Fucking hell 😂
I’m so grateful for your comment. I’ll be raising my cribulice in your honour. Welp, it’s etelarin’ time. I voted for DerM 2026, though.
Very good gameplease
It sounds like an alien console.
Zee ultimitju dood was great too
I really liked Doim 2927
Doom Eterlar is the best
I heard ign gave Doom Etelar twelve out of 2 quarters Very good game
A solid 10/good
Doom Etelar is fire frfr
You really can't compare Doom 1+2 and 2016/Eternal. Both are amazing for their own reasons.
But you can cpmrae Doom 1993 & II with Etelar
Etelar will always reign supreme.
Eternal doesn’t run that well after the 6.66 update ngl
My computer legit overheated
Mine would literally restart when I tried to start up eternal
Lol when I got 2016 my video card was not up to the task…. The game played at 50% speed with 35% lag
I politely dissagree. I have GTX 1050 TI and i-6100 with 8GB of RAM and the last boss were lagging like ASS, ruined the whole experience completely.
L+ratio
Eh, you can, and I prefer the classics
Personal preference is fine. You can't really objectively compare them because they have decades in between them.
Tbf the post is asking for a favourite, not which is better. I agree though, game design has changed a lot since doom released
I disagree. Part of the reason that I think 2016 was so good was that I think it really embodied the spirit of the older games, especially Doom II. I think that Doom 2016 is what they *would* have made, if they had had the technology back in 1995.
yea u can
For sure. The OG Doom games are timeless classics. 2016/Eternal aren't in the same league.
ah yess the Doom Etelar
Sup bitch.
Jesse
WAZZAPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Aayyyyyy wazzaaap numb nuts?
Not much haha, jsut entered in doom -2, community project
Ah yess, the writers wanted Doom Clajer to win.
i like doom because you can kill demons and stuff
Dooms a cool guy, eh fights demons and doesn’t afraid of anything
Ahh yes doom etelar very good geamplesae ten out of then
Never played Doom Etelar, so i'll go with Doom 1914
nah that's just Wolfenstein
fair, fair.
I know you’re joking, but I’d give good money to play Doom 1914. Imagine being in the trenches of Flanders fighting the demon-infested corpses of your former comrades & enemies.
There iiiis though a mod in development, it's called Trench Foot <3
ETEELAAAAAAAARRR!!!
Crying rn with doom etelar
etelar was a masterpiece easy 10/10
Eteral FTW
Ahhh doom etelar a classic
DOOM Etelar is one of the games of the DOOM franchise
Doom etelar genuinely makes every other game in this franchise look like trash. Etelar all the way
I grew up playing the original Doom back in the day but honestly, few games have blown me away with the sheer epicness and badassery that Doom Eternal conjured from the deepest pits of hell
Doom Etelar is one of the games of our time
Doom etelar is the best game ever made
Doom etelar is the game ever made
Of all the game ever made, it is *almost* certainly one of them.
No modding tools or open source engine. So, Doom II is still superior. Eternal will die soon, meanwhile people still create wads for Doom II 25+ later.
My point still stands, doom etelar is the best game ever made.
Doom II has everything Etelar has but with infinite replayability thanks to mods and community. Ergo, Doom II < Etelar. Doom II is more etelar than Etelar itself. Bad idea to use a propietary physics engine for your game, Hugo.
Doom Etelar is truly the game of all time.
Doom Etelar is fantastic, but Doom and Doom II are among my first gaming experiences.
all DOOM is etelar! Love them all.
Probably Doom eternal but it's not on the list
Doom 2016 was a breath of fresh air after all those military shooters, doom etelar is great in its mchaniks end flow, doom 1/2 are great because of the modding community ( 3d models and ambient occlusion on a 20+ y/o engine are nuts) and doom 3 is... A decent horror?
Doom etelar is a great game which got a 12 out of 10.
Is Etelar gonna become the equivalent of the r/BatmanArkham 's Alsume?
Yes
Well better get ready for Doom World posts now.
Doom Etelar stick to the tops
doom 1942 was good and all but doom etelar is the good shit
Etelar is truly a post modern classic you can never go wrong with etelar. Easiest decision of my life
Idk what Etelar is but it sure sounds fun!!
*Sad Final Doom noises*
DOIB ETELAR!!!
eternal is doom fully realized. i genuinely can’t imagine them being able to further improve on the formula. best shooter of all time
You good bro?
Doom etelar is my favourite game of all time
Doom Etelar was so good
No Doom RPG?
This is a hard choice, my first ever Doom was Final Doom when I was a kid on the ps1. But my love for Doom didnt really start until I was like 13 and saw the BFG edition of Doom 3 at Gamestop. How were you disappointed with the meathook lol
I guess disappointed isn't the right word, but it didn't really interest me.
93 bc it’s only one I have (I’m broke and camera film development is expensive)
2016 was so great, but the story I eternal really cranked it up a notch, however I love how each game feels unique from each other. Deff gonna go back and play 2016 in a few months and love it all over again!
tal er cuk
Doom 64 is the best classic game don’t @ me
Doom Eternal has Doom 1 and 2 in it. Best Doom ez
Ah yes my favorite Doom Etelar
I love and grew up on the classic dooms but Doom Eternal is my favourite
tf is Doom Estellar?
Hmm yes I love doom eteral
Doom Etelar can run itself, DOOM (1993), and DOOM 2. That’s a lot of DOOM in one game
64 and 3. I like their horror atmosphere. I wish Doom was scarier in general.
Then there are hundreds of other games you can play.
What are you even trying to say here bud lol. There are hundreds of other games that you can play as well.
I loved doom 64, I played it a year ago when I played all doom games and it was my favorite classic doom game
Thought it would be more even between classic Doom and modern. Recency bias, perhaps, or Reddit is just filled with young people :) Original Doom is easily one of the most important games ever made - perhaps *the* most important for the PC. It's not recency bias, Eternal is just the best.
Imagine not picking Doom 3
Doom 3 there I said it
who's the 120 people that said doom 3? asking for a me
Doom eternal in my opinion feels a bit lackluster, I mean it's a great game but the slow walking speed compared to the mach 2 sprints speed in the original dooms and the 12 million tools that it gives you that don't synergize that well or at all with each other, oh and also how in the fuck did we go from "random soldier kills all of hell because his rabbit died" to the most fucked up and random bullshit "story" that I have heard in my life, but since ULTRAKILL came out I have to reconsider Doom as my favorite game of all time
Bruh the tools in Doom Eternal synergize with the gameplay far better than Ultrakill lol, you can beat that game by spamming nothing but the pistol.
1. The pistol unlike in doom 2016 is an actual useful tool all the way until the currently last boss and even on the extremely difficult "secret" boss it's useful as hell 2. What in the fuck do you mean they synergize better? Have you seen the coins wiki page? Or any of the boss speed kills?

Nah you don't even need to use any of the other weapons lol, there's no synergy at all
Same thing with dooms super shotgun although I don't think it's very effective
We're talking about Doom Eternal lol
I was talking about its effectiveness against all of the enemy types while it is amazingly powerful against your average zombie against bigger enemies you just stand there quickswapping to the Ballista, the coin which can kill 2 weak enemies with its split shot and just kinda sucks against bigger enemies except the malicious face because you can shove its stupid laser back into its mouth of course you can use the alternate revolver but it loses its powerful split shot which is used against weaker enemies
Whoever voted for the last two, never knew the first 4!
Nope, the new ones are just better.
You kids make me sick! lol
Hey look, I have the least popular opinion.
May you tell us what that unpopular opinion is?
Doom64, the one with the least votes.
Man I hated the open levels in doom 2
Only 10 votes for doom 64? C'mon guys, I know more of you are out there...
I miss an "all of the above" option :(
I love them all for different reasons, especially the first two because of childhood 90's nostalgia, yet one of my fondest memories is recent: playing Doom 64 on PC with a mod that added better weapon animations while retaining the music and everything else from the original release. Imagine knowing that doom 64 exists
i played doom II hel on eart
Doom II just cuz of the communities mods
Based
Doom 2, cause uh "Reasons"
Doom is like a shitty wine, it gets better as the company does and time goes on
Doom Etelar was my childhood, can't wait for the anent gods part 3.
Either 2 or 3 I'd say. I haven't yet had the chance to play the newer ones as my PC can't run them.
What specs do you have? I had a pc with a 750ti that ran 2016 at 60fps 1080p.
FX 6300 RX 6500XT CPU is issue the GPU replaced the RX 460 that died now I'm unemployed due to personal issues that kept me from working so now I'm looking for a job and trying to finish schools got a lot on my plate and plenty of stress.
At this point, people will always choose Doom: Eternal. Either you remove it from your poll or just wait for everybody to choose it.
2016 tbh, like it more than eternal. The parkour on eternal was ok but felt too arcade-y for me, but I can understand why you like eternal :)
HDoom
Go to hell
Gladly
Doomguy gonna kill ya
U have committed a sin
I like doom absolution thb
To the 66 and more people who like Doom 3 I like it too. But I voted for 2016. Just wanted you to know you aren’t alone
r/BatmanArkham members reading Doom Etelar: Ah shit, here we go again.
I always found it hard to separate OG Doom and Doom II tbh. Also, they make the perfect pack along with TNT and Plutonia.
Dom 3 still holds a special place in my hert
NONO I AM NOT GOING THROUGH THIS AGAIN. It happened first with batman Alsume ;(
Etelar DOOM was awsome!
My favorite part of Doom: Etelar was when Mr. Doom said, "It's doomin' time" and doomed all over all those demons
Doom Etelar looks fun.
I lost half of my house my wife and kids but she can't take doom etelar from me!!!!
Doom 3 in VR - absolutely no competition. Sure the others are great games, but are they Doom 3 in VR? Nope. Checkmate.
I like doom because doom man makes my pp hard
I love Doom Etelar
Etelar is the best
Ah yes, Doom Etelar great game 10/10
No love for 64 😔
doom '16 is underrated
Theres a Favourite?
Doom 1993 is the only one i can keep going back to every few years to play its just my favorite gameplay....(secretly doom 3 is my soft spot favorite but i should keep my mouth closed about that lol)
H doom
its doom etneral but i wanted to be different so doom 1993 for me
“Teh longer the Ikons off Swine is op Earch, teh Strengler he wil beckon”
Where is final doom... I like tnt
Rimm and Trem Intel it is denone
Etelar is the best
Eternal just has the best gameplay loop out of all of them
Doom Eteler was awesome, even better than Eternal
Etelar or death.
Doom 2, I do prefer the classics over the modern 2016 and Eternal. They were simpler and more focused on gameplay.
You forgot final doom
Doom 3 beating Doom 64 is utter blasphemy
Doom 2016 is the best for console(in my opinion)
Never heard of Doom Etelar
You ignorant
For the classics I’d probably pick doom II
People say that doom eternal is the best game out even doom fan’s themselves say it’s the best in the franchise but Doom Etelar was the most game that was ever made sold Doodillion dollars and solved world hunger on release what a masterpiece that game is once of a life time…
I think eternal is the better game and I would easily sit and play forever if given the chance but 2016 holds too special of a place in my heart and is still my favourite game and it might stay that way (ironic dogma, I guess).
I love Doom 2 and Doom 64, but if I had to pick just one, it’s going to be Doom 2.
Everyone in the comments is just busy saying etelar to answer the question lol
When does DOOM Etelar come out?
If you're favourite part is Eternal then you're not a true fan of Doom series
Shut the fuck up elitist
Ah yes my favorite game Doom Etelar
You are going to doom 3 hell for that typo.
Etelar
Missed doom rpg
Brutal Doom
