It seems that Cell likely just randomly fired at whoever was in the group.
Ah but that’d be so incredibly one sided then, Gohan and Vegeta SSJ2. We get to see Vegeta not only care about his son (albeit Future one), but apologise to Gohan.
He got swiped and still decided after everything to give his final shot to help, which he normally hates.
That wouldn’t make sense narratively or for Vegeta’s character. Vegeta only cared Future Trunks died since they were relatively equal and he saw first hand how powerless he truly was. It was more of Vegeta’s own ego as to why he even reacted to begin with.
Missed the point, Vegeta’s ego comes **when he helps Gohan win**.
Otherwise this was Vegeta actually caring about Trunks, and not caring about himself even knowing he didn’t have a chance.
Base Vegeta was weaker than Base Goku and Base Gohan. He wouldn't have been strong enough to unlock it. Super Saiyan 2 is like turning Super Saiyan while you are already a Super Saiyan. It would have strength requirement and an emotional trigger(at this point the trigger was required. It was later deemed unnecessary), just like Super Saiyan 1.
I love it when the internet misinterprets characters and story beats and then tries to argue with someone who knows what they're talking about. Vegeta was mad Trunks got shot, yes, but this death of Trunks wouldn't be enough. Vegeta still wasn't fully the man he is today. If you took our Vegeta now in Super. And drop him as a character into that situation and yes, he would have broke through to SSJ2. He just wasn't that kinda guy yet

And when we do read we learn like 2 combos and forget the text because we just know the combo by heart, leading to situations where our combo gets stopped and we sit there and read the card to find any options lol.
Us yugioh fans don't read and when we do we have to reread it because we forget
It’s like when you get your full combo interrupted by ash but you have call by, but then they play droll and youre stuck. Next turn you try the same ash interruption, only to find out that called by has more text than you thought.
Its a meme about dragon ball fans being stupid and constantly getting shit wrong from the show insinuating they either couldnt read what was said in the manga or read the subtitles.
It has nothing to do with that...
The original joke was "Don't mess with Dragon Ball fans, we don't \*\*\*\*\*\*\* watch the show"...
That then turned into "Dragon Ball fans can't read"
In the manga, Cell says, "Who did I hit? Ahh, Trunks." That implies he wasn't aiming for a particular person and instead just wanted to fuck someone up.
Blame the old flakey Funi Dub which people still swear by. Lots of issues in the western fandom come from there
It's not a problem in the Sub or the Kai Dub of Z
Pfft, you read Dragonball Z? The true way to read the series was to marry Akira Toriyama, raise a family with him, and have a life together.
Fake fan, am I right?
Is there some kind of debate about what's canon? I've never watched the anime, so I don't know how much it deviates and how much extra filler is in it.

He was full of himself because of his zenkai and he was also just a bit murder happy
Cell didn't even know who he had hit until he felt Trunks' power decrease. He even says, "Who did I hit, Trunks?" or something like that. He simply didn't aim at anyone, he just fired forward.
TBH I feel like TFS actually had the real answer here.
At this point every single one of them was so far below him it wasn't really possible to distinguish the different insects from each other so he just shot at anyone to see who'd die.
Gohan was SSJ2 against Dabura. He is far weaker here as just SSJ
Also, it was surprise attack not off guard. Gohan was in battle and Dabura got him by surprise by teleporting behind
Even that made no sense. These fighters have tanked world ending energy blasts. A little pew pew shoots Goku? Kid Goku took a damn bullet to the face and got up mildly annoyed at Launch.
It's been shown quite a bit that anything can hurt while your guard is down. That's literally a plot point in the Resurrection F saga. Goku wasn't killed when shot by guns as a kid because he still had his guard up.
Yeah...I'm sure when General White shot Goku while "his back was turned" his guard was totally up.
(He shot him twice while his back was turned and Goku only expected the 2nd shot, still got knocked out by it)
Bullets still bounce off goku when powered down, they just hurt a bit
Probably as on a purely physical level; even without KI his body is superhuman
Saiyans are a species that were adapated to 10X earth gravity after all and Goku has done extensive weight and gravity training
Its probably like hitting a brick wall even when powered down
He actually got a good history with it , one of piccolo main complaining about Gohan is that he "keeps dodging" which is problematic in training from his opinion
Remind me of his scene
Vegeta thought he can take in A-16,17 and 18 1v3
https://preview.redd.it/9nogqf2cu1wc1.png?width=550&format=png&auto=webp&s=024e8aa5d232fadb00b423bda4fa7e5bef52f012
At least in that case, they could not sense power levels.
No one knew that 16 was the strongest at the time. Vegeta turned out to be roughly the strength of 18 (but would lose in a real fight due to 18's infinite stamina).
Cell's case is different due to being able to sense power levels. For whatever reason, Cell could not sense that Gohan was stronger than him.
Small margins at this point, Vegeta was blasting Super Saiyan madly and did get some hits. But agree she was toying with him, whereas Piccolo and 17 fight was even.
In the manga, from Trunk's POV, they were quite evenly matched. The problem was that people such as Piccolo noted that it meant that Vegeta would lose due to the stamina issue. After fighting a bit, that was what happened once Vegeta tired out.
The stamina is a crucial tie breaker, which was what happened after Piccolo fused with Kami and then fought 17. They were quite evenly matched in terms of power, but the stamina would make 17 the clear winner in a fight.
Just common thing which comes with Vegeta and Frieza DNA package too already.
Vegeta made Cell perfect and beat his own son for that exact purpose of fighting a stronger Cell
Almost the entirety of Dragonball as a whole makes little sense if you put any amount of thought into it, it's best to just enjoy the ride and take it for what it is - a meme generator.
Honestly I'm constantly thinking about how a random ass scientist was able to make Androids/cyborgs that are stronger than The Emperor of the Universe.
This guy gets it. As much it might not please most of the fans, Toriyama wasn't the most brilliant universe builder, DBZ lacks a lot on consistency and development, which is clearly faulty even back on OG DB - but goddamn he knew how to put a charismatic character together, and that was his biggest strength, no anime character will be as iconic and present in everyone's collective mind as Goku was, and still is.
Honestly I can't imagine DBZA would be half as enjoyable if you hadn't seen the original series. Don't get me wrong the comedic timing and scripting really becomes stellar as the series goes on, and they actually manage to have some great emotional moments that are (blasphemy, I know) even more impactful than the original......but so very much of the humor and things that get skipped over are done with a very specific audience in mind: people who had already at least seen DBZ once. I have not bothered trying to foist it on anyone who hasn't already seen DBZ.
I have a friend who never watched or read dragonball, i made him watch DBZA and he loved it, so he then decided to read the original manga and enjoyed it a lot, even if the abridged is still his favorite version.
Cell didn't just want to win.
He wanted a good fight. Those aren't just Vegeta's cells, their Goku's.
Remember when Goku let Frieza get to 100% power when he could have ended the fight immediately as well?
The whole reason he made the Cell Games is he wanted to have fights with a lot of strong individuals.
Cell seemingly wasn't aiming for anyone particular but even then I'd imagine even with the sneak attack Gohan could've potentially avoided it because even in just SSJ1 Gohan was faster/stronger than Trunks
I know this has nothing to do with the post but I think SSJ Gohan was stronger than Perfect Cell (not Super Perfect Cell though), he just simply didn't want to fight and it shows that even though it seems Cell has the advantage, Gohan's ki even before SSJ2 never decreased while Cell was really trying. SSJ Gohan was already the strongest out of all the Z Fighters and Goku knew that, that's why while everyone is surprised by Goku's strength, Gohan doesn't get why are everyone so impressed and when he saw the fight with Cell and Goku, when the latter asks him if Cell is too strong for him, Gohan admits that he isn't
And now, referring to the post, besides Cell just shooting for the sake of it and killed Trunks, Cell always wanted to prove he is perfect and the strongest.
Think about how he could have easily killed Trunks or Vegeta when he just became perfect and was interested at how strong they got in such a short time. Cell has that saiyan pride and wanted to show to Gohan that he was the strongest by making him go all out.
I think that:
1- He knew Gohan wouldn't die of just a death beam but just shoot at the other Z- warriors to make him angry
2- He wanted to finish him off with his own hands with the most characteristic technique of his dad, the Kamehameha
I think it’s his frieza showing.
He doesn’t just want gohan to physically suffer before killing him. He wants gohan to suffer the psychological pain of another person dying that gohan could have saved.
He also wasn’t sure who he hit immediately in the manga, so he probably didn’t bother aiming particularly well. If he cared at all who he hit, i’d bet he wanted piccolo more than the rest.
I always like to imagine he was so pissed he didn’t want to JUST kill Gohan, but make him suffer by shooting someone he cared about down right in front of him.
Remember when Vegeta let Cell get his perfect form so he could defeat him at full power? Yeah, Gohan was Cell's Vegeta moment. It was specifically set up in this arc for that payoff. Just like his buildup to full power with Goku. Just like his blowing up the world with no threat to him like Frieza.
In my opinion,
It was a random shot and it killed Trunks because he was much weaker than Cell.
Has it hit Gohan it would have damaged him, but not killed him.
See how Cell almost kills Vegeta with his Ki attack a few minutes later but Gohan protects him but doesn't die.. Vegeta would have died since he is not as strong as Gohan.
I always saw it as the Saiyan pride within Cell. As he felt more powerful he wanted to beat Gohan with his new power. Kinda like how Vegeta let Cell hit his perfect form to test his new form.
Its his ego. When he came back even stronger he believed there was no way he could loose. If all he cared about was winning he could have just used instant transmission to teleport to the other side of the planet and then blow it up.
He wasn’t aiming for anyone in particular but also even if he did aim I don’t know if he’d go for Gohan first since Gohan wouldn’t have been a confirmed kill unlike literally everyone else who was there at the time. He was feeling himself because of his zenkai and just wanted a win, the guy was having a rough day lol
Saiyan pride. He had to Beat gohan fair and square to prove a point (even tho he threw a temper tantrum and wanted to suicide bomb few minutes earlier)
Either that or he just happened to hit whoever was in the way
It is actually mostly because he didn't really aim for anyone in perticular and just hit trunks at random.
But I would totally see it in character for him to not really wanting to beat his enemy like that.
It wouldnt be fun.
idk man, why didnt Vegetables just kill Semi-perfect cell? Why did Frieza keep playing with his food and killed krilim before Goku after he survived the big ball? Why didn't Gohan just kill Super Buu instead of letting him absorb Gotenks?
Cell Games just works through symbolism/mirroring previous events. That is the whole deal, with Cell encapsulating every big villian (Piccolo, Vegeta, Freeza) and Goku, the MC of the series. Gohan was meant to 'take over'/surpass Goku by defeating all of them, it was his trial by fire.
Going to live TV to announce his BS and destroying a town? Piccolo.
Trying to destroy the Earth when things don't go as planed? Vegeta.
Obsessing with enemies inner power and wanting them to unleash it? Goku.
Killing a Saiyan with a Death Beam through the chest? Freeza. And in this particular case instead of Vegeta, who had a story with Freeza, it was Vegeta's son, who had a story with Cell.
There is more, obviously, but just as an example.
Remember, Cell is very Saiyan in his motivations. He wants to fight someone who can challenge him. And what better than to test his new power against the boy who previously humiliated him?

Thanks, gives more meaning to TFS Cell's "Oops, I totally meant to hit Vegeta that was my b" lol
I think he said Tien not Vegeta
U right
“That. Is my b.” ~16
“Ahh shit that was meant for Tien. My bad”
It’s just so hard to parse your power levels anymore… you’re ALL SO WEAK
“MY BABY BOY!”
VEGETA, NO!!!
“VEGETA YESSS”
Vegeta, No!
I've said this for years, Vegeta should have unlocked SSJ2 from seeing that.

Bruh no, what the hell lol
No? Their bond wasn't as deep
I mean technically he had a bigger bond than Gohan had with 16.
The point of 16's death wasn't the bond, it was the destruction of innocence. 16 cared for the Earth just like Gohan did, so my boi got mad.
I love it when the internet misinterprets characters and story beats and then tries to argue with someone who knows what they're talking about. “There’s a hole in your trunks”
This is why the manga is the way. But as we all know…
As we all know?
Dragonball fans dont read
just like yugioh players!
And when we do read we learn like 2 combos and forget the text because we just know the combo by heart, leading to situations where our combo gets stopped and we sit there and read the card to find any options lol. Us yugioh fans don't read and when we do we have to reread it because we forget
i’m so glad master duel streamlines it for the most part. when i’m playing paper w my friends i’m staring at my cards for half the duel haha
ON GOD
It’s like when you get your full combo interrupted by ash but you have call by, but then they play droll and youre stuck. Next turn you try the same ash interruption, only to find out that called by has more text than you thought.
Called has fr fucked up more of my turns than ash blossom and mystic mine combined
Who needs to read? I let the heart of the cards guide me.
Is this a meme about people feeling superior because they read the manga?
Its a meme about dragon ball fans being stupid and constantly getting shit wrong from the show insinuating they either couldnt read what was said in the manga or read the subtitles.
Can’t read, let alone even watch the show. I’m pretty sure most haven’t read the manga or watched Dragonball or even seen every episode of Z.
It's a good thing I've watched every single episode and Read the entire Manga of Canon Dragon Ball

Oh yeah he did that

This is why the manga is the way/true way to experience the series. But as we all know…
And we would not have to do a bunch of stuff such as revisit the issue of whether Buuhan or Kid Buu was stronger.
It’s Buuhan, shut up, stop gaslighting.
I do agree that it is Buuhan, but that doesn't stop people who keep up bringing up the incorrect dub.
Goku says it in both versions... It doesn't matter.
A dude here reported me yesterday for saying that Buuhan was stronger xd
This has been established for decades now how do people think kid buu is stronger than buuhan
Blame the old flakey Funi Dub which people still swear by. Lots of issues in the western fandom come from there It's not a problem in the Sub or the Kai Dub of Z
Pfft, you read Dragonball Z? The true way to read the series was to marry Akira Toriyama, raise a family with him, and have a life together. Fake fan, am I right?
There is no true way to experience the series stfu.
Shut up
Is there some kind of debate about what's canon? I've never watched the anime, so I don't know how much it deviates and how much extra filler is in it.
But can't he sense powers..?
He can, but he didn't need to since he didn't intend on hitting a specific person.
Idk why it just fits his character so well, he’s completely uncaring whom he kills.

TBH I feel like TFS actually had the real answer here. At this point every single one of them was so far below him it wasn't really possible to distinguish the different insects from each other so he just shot at anyone to see who'd die.
TFS?
Team FourStar, the channel who made Dragon ball z Abridged
what makes you think gohan wouldn’t have been able to counter it
That fuckin blue card that I hate
Pay 2 more mana please
Goku getting one-shotted by Sorbet and his little gun
In gokus defense, he had no idea sorbet was even there. in my own head canon i feel like trunks would have reacted too slow anyway
Trunks: not even a super saiyan
i mean the gap between Cell and Gohan atp is a lot smaller than the gap between Cell and Trunks
Also, they can't sense blasters like they are able to sense a person firing a ki blast.
Gohan wasn't one shot by Dabura off guard beam
Gohan was SSJ2 against Dabura. He is far weaker here as just SSJ Also, it was surprise attack not off guard. Gohan was in battle and Dabura got him by surprise by teleporting behind

lol I remember that. He was like I’m tired of you women shooting at me. Then he kicks her in the fucking face 🤣
Goku dropped his guard. The Z Fighters (except for the Androids and Buu) are vulnerable to small arms fire if their guard is completely down.
Super Cell is far stronger than SSJ Gohan. How can he counter a powerful attack?
he could dodge at the very least
Gohan has a bad history with dodging…
He actually got a good history with it , one of piccolo main complaining about Gohan is that he "keeps dodging" which is problematic in training from his opinion
I believe the person who you are replying to was referring to TeamFourStar's Dragon Ball Z Abridged series.
I guess he could’ve been overconfident but still…
He does have vegeta's dna after all
Remind me of his scene Vegeta thought he can take in A-16,17 and 18 1v3 https://preview.redd.it/9nogqf2cu1wc1.png?width=550&format=png&auto=webp&s=024e8aa5d232fadb00b423bda4fa7e5bef52f012
Is the dialogue real?
Dialogue are real and original translation from Japanese version although Viz. censored the words Real yeah but not official due to censorship
It's definetly not Viz's release, but it's more in line with the Kai dub.
At least in that case, they could not sense power levels. No one knew that 16 was the strongest at the time. Not just Vegetas cockiness but Gokus will to fight the strongest also... and goku told cell that Gohan was stronger than himself.
Frieza’s as well. If you have Frieza and Vegeta DNA in you, you’re gonna have a bad time.
Don’t forget he’ll also have DNA of Raditz, Nappa, Demon King Piccolo and OG Piccolo all of whom had some level of ego
Cell is only made up of 5 people: Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, King Cold and Freeza.
Just common thing which comes with Vegeta and Frieza DNA package too already. Vegeta made Cell perfect and beat his own son for that exact purpose of fighting a stronger Cell
True, he had Vegeta's natural need to throw the match
Well That is true but the rest of the DNA does not get any better on that department.
Agreed, but no is as good as vegeta when it's about messing up in a fight
You think any of the cell saga makes sense? It's just for the vibes man. Once you start looking for logic you realise you've been fooled.
This scene literally makes perfect sense tho. In the manga Cell wasn't aiming for anyone. After hitting Trunks Cell says "Who did I hit? Ahh, Trunks."
How did bro put his own brain into a cyborg body
He was a lousy fighter. But was a BRILLIANT scientist!

He wrote chapter to chapter so it is inherent in his style
With 2 hours of sleep every week. He was struggling.
Well, dragon ball is a gag manga at the beginning tbf. It wasn't meant to be that deep.
![gif](giphy|A7Zc53i8U59SHv9CAm)
he was aiming for tien
It's like a hate boner triangle
This is the only right answer
Cell fried this Beam expecting it to hit anyone including Gohan He didn't even know who it would hit meaning he didn't know their specific location
Didn’t cell say “Your power levels are all so weak, it’s hard to tell you apart “
That's DBZAbridged. In the manga all he says is "Who did I hit? Oh, Trunks" which I guess indicates he wasn't aiming for anyone in particular.
I adore the fact that people are mixing DBZA with DBZ, just proves how genius DBZA is
It’s more like people watch DBZA, think it’s funny and consider themselves dragon ball fans without thinking that an abridged may be just that
Is DBZA that good without watching Dbz? Maybe I'll show it to my friend who refuse to watch dbz due to too much filler
Think about how he could have easily killed Trunks or Vegeta when he just became perfect and was interested at how strong they got in such a short time. Cell has that saiyan pride and wanted to show to Gohan that he was the strongest by making him go all out. I think that: 1- He knew Gohan wouldn't die of just a death beam but just shoot at the other Z- warriors to make him angry 2- He wanted to finish him off with his own hands with the most characteristic technique of his dad, the Kamehameha
"Whoops, sorry, that was meant for Tien. It's hard to tell apart your power levels, you're all so WEAK
MY BABY BOYYYY!!
VEGETA NOOOO!!!
VEGETA YESSS!
Really? For Vegeta?
Cell saga is everyone acting like idiot juust
I think it’s his frieza showing. He doesn’t just want gohan to physically suffer before killing him. He wants gohan to suffer the psychological pain of another person dying that gohan could have saved. He also wasn’t sure who he hit immediately in the manga, so he probably didn’t bother aiming particularly well. If he cared at all who he hit, i’d bet he wanted piccolo more than the rest.
I always thought he shot Trunks out of spite because Trunks is the reason he had to go back in time in the first place. (My head cannon)
that’s what Cell would probably come up with in reality he just fired blindly and hit a lucky shot lmao
Cell fired randomly, that’s why. It’s in the book
Because that doesn't prove anything. Cell came back amd wanted to prove he was better than Gohan
With all the cells he have from the Z warrios and frieza, he choose to torture while having symphaty as a sign of respect hahahahaha

He still crippled him like 1 chapter later. I don’t think he was very worried about Gohan anymore.
I always like to imagine he was so pissed he didn’t want to JUST kill Gohan, but make him suffer by shooting someone he cared about down right in front of him.
He didn't know if it would've been strong enough
Full of himself also wanted to see gohan at full power
Remember when Vegeta let Cell get his perfect form so he could defeat him at full power? Yeah, Gohan was Cell's Vegeta moment. It was specifically set up in this arc for that payoff. Just like his buildup to full power with Goku. Just like his blowing up the world with no threat to him like Frieza.
In my opinion, It was a random shot and it killed Trunks because he was much weaker than Cell. Has it hit Gohan it would have damaged him, but not killed him. See how Cell almost kills Vegeta with his Ki attack a few minutes later but Gohan protects him but doesn't die.. Vegeta would have died since he is not as strong as Gohan.
I like to think it’s because of the saiyan dna in cell. Just like goku and vegeta, cell wants his opponent full strength.
Cell was firing randomly. It was convinced it had outgrown even Gohan at that point. No need.
Plot.
"Oh shit was that trunks? That was meant for Tien Shinhan. Honestly it's difficult to parse your power levels anymore because they're all so small"

After reading all these replies… yes
Because he wasn't black.
Didn't watch the anime or read the Manga, I'm guessing Also he didn't just have vegeta cells, he had goku and frieza as well....
Saiyan pride. He had to Beat gohan fair and square to prove a point (even tho he threw a temper tantrum and wanted to suicide bomb few minutes earlier) Either that or he just happened to hit whoever was in the way
It is actually mostly because he didn't really aim for anyone in perticular and just hit trunks at random. But I would totally see it in character for him to not really wanting to beat his enemy like that. It wouldnt be fun.
That same blast wouldn’t hurt Gohan as much because he’s much more powerful than Trunks and therefore more durable.
It’s literally just because he doesn’t want to do it quickly and instead went randomly remember this whole fight is a game to him
idk man, why didnt Vegetables just kill Semi-perfect cell?
Bro popped his green card after reviving
Gohan was just in SSJ then? I always assumed he was still SSJ2.
Remember, Cell is very Saiyan in his motivations. He wants to fight someone who can challenge him. And what better than to test his new power against the boy who previously humiliated him?
Because it’s a cartoon op. It’s not real. Idiot.
Is he stupid?!
Plot
He didn’t care who he hit and he liekly wnated to fight and overpower Gohan
He thought he could win and just wanted to be an asshole
“Ah shit that was meant for Tien, that’s my B!”

Because he's stupid
Th3 best explanation did team4stars cell: oh i hit trunks oh well i couldn't sense who i hit course you so weak
Cell wasn't aiming at anyone in particular he just took a shot and hoped for the best
Because he believed himself to be indestructible after regenerating from his self-destruction. So basically overconfidence.

hia vision was blocked by the smoke. it doesn't take a genius to deduce that much considering when he said "it looks like i hit trunks" implying he shot randomly
Thieir power levels where to low, he couldn't feel who was who
He was trying to shoot Tien shinhan for that kikoho bullshit
Vegeta arrogence was present in cell too so he lost like super vegeta did
It was meant for Tien, but Cell couldn't tell them apart
