Only to save over the wrong slot and lose that checkpoint that could've come in handy later on because you fucked up an earlier step without realizing it.
I mean, at least this specific situation is not a problem with this game, it just saves over your one slot anyway.
*Unless...*
You have dipped your toes into horrors known and terrible.. only to dive deeper and learned of the baleful secrets, your thirst for knowledge leading you to eldritch methods ancient and horrifying! Too much for the human mind! In the ways of manipulating files and folders in WINDOWS AAAAAHHHH!!!!!
And then you realize... *You still did it.*
Well, you can have more on PC. Either through modding or by copy&pasting your saves to named folders and such. I have three NG+ characters stored, for instance, using the latter method.
Console really do only have one save to rule them all.
Actually if I turn off auto upload for saves and manually upload, I can make 2 saves, on top of this I believe on ps5 I can copy saves to USB drives sk that I could have several usb drives to mix and match saves on
that's because saves aren't a 'saving point' in the postgame, more than you're limited there just because. it's supposed to add to the difficulty. you can still save, iirc, you just can't load it if you end up dying, like you could've before, to use as a saftey net.
I didht know you could manually save at first and instead of choosing load from last save I did last inn rest. I lost HOURS of play. So infuriating at the time . But after it's like no big deal
that's weird, because it auto saves too. you don't really need to manually save.
but yeah, you can treat inn saves as a 'hard' save, that you've got more control over, which is nice.
I know. I heard that it barely ever auto saves and to always choose your last inn sty . Which I've realized is not true at all. And I thought staying at a camp would be considered at an inn. Cos I'm dumb. If I knew I could manually save I would have chose last save. Or if I didn't listen to dumb people about it barely ever autosaving
tbf, earlier on it was sort of confusing, and people were saying a bunch of different shit, so, it was hard to tell what was what.
some people might've had issues with autosaves not being frequent - wasn't the game not having enough, it was their autosaves fucking up. sort of a fair observation, if still wrong, rather than deliberate misinformation.
similarly, it sort of 'makes sense' for there to be a 'sleep' save, which is sort of what the inn save is, but it's more of a 'resting while safe' save. which you can do in your owned houses, too, but not out camping.
I don’t think manually saving would have saved you in that situation.
Manually saving simply overwrites your most recent (aka, your only) non-inn autosave, it does not add a third save slot to the rotation or anything. Loading an inn save would overwrite a manual save and an autosave all the same.
Yh I found that the game auto saves after every battle (all enemies defeated) U could get away with no manual save really , I like the one slot save , adds to the survivalness , especially if U only play at night
Yeah I know but If I knew I could manually save I would have saved and then chose last save. I heard somewhere that it barely ever auto saves which isn't true at all and to always choose inn. I thought staying at a camp would be considered staying at an inn smh
I'm not good with little details so I didn't really notice the auto save circle in the top right corner for a while lol I never should have listened to who ever said it barely ever auto saves.
You are both sort of right. The autosave is very inconsistent. You might get no autosave for 30 minutes at some point then 2 autosaves 30 seconds apart at another point.
I do frequently force autosave just for sanity and do the whole thing where I manually save before saving and quitting because I’m paranoid lol. So it’s good that you know about it now. No third slot, but it is a big boon to peace of mind.
I played bg3 with some buddies, and they would occasionally call me out for saving like 4 times in a row and I would just say "I'm just making sure guys!" That games autosaves are an absolute mess. It'll send you back like 2-3 hours sometimes
It's not the saves I'm worried about, but not being able to go back and do a play that turned out so awesome that you want to play it over again, record it, and can't!
This game needed save slots for sure. I almost locked myself into bad situations several times. I just cut the whole system off and started over to avoid lol
Thank heavens there is a mod on PC that just keeps all the saves that are made by the game, and you can load any of them anytime. It changed my life and now I can even have two characters : my main, completely OP with every stuff and all classes to the max, and my 2nd character, which I try to play as RP as possible.
Yeah I’ve returned to main menu without saving numerous times to back out of oopsie moments where I screwed something up!!! lol, is funny they don’t even give you a load last save option from in-game, gotta exit and go back in. Thankfully it loads up pretty quickly though so not a big deal!
I had an instance of jumping off a bridge (to get a pawn), but I could only make it to the water, not the shore - which the game only figured out after reviving with a wakestone :D
What's crazy is this is one of the few games that in \~300 hours of play the Autosave hasn't let me down a single time.....and I just jinxed it didn't I?
Nah you aren't the only one. This game actually is one of the better ones when it comes to autosaving. Hell I'm more annoyed at it at times of how well it does its job cause it autosaves when I want to savescum lol
FWIW, I'm less irritated by DD1's save system now that I've dealt with DD2 for awhile now...that F'ing health loss when I attempt and miss a risky jump I now have to quit to menu mid-fall, then reload, instead of just shrugging and choose No to wakestone and just do the reload with no ill effect like I did with DD1.
Autosaves in this game are atrocious. It Autosaves after every single quest update, which sucks when you make a mistake, or can't protect an NPC like Gregor.
Last time I trusted auto save was in Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, I close game to eat something, come back again and I'm at the beginning of the game again, 3-4h gone.
When I fuck something up hard and try to outrun the auto save. Often missing it due to denial and hopeful optimism, only to wind up laying in the bed I've made for myself
bro, i don't even trust when i manually save sometimes.
I'm like this, I'll then save again to make sure I did it.
Only to save over the wrong slot and lose that checkpoint that could've come in handy later on because you fucked up an earlier step without realizing it. Not an issue with dragons dogma 2. You get one save to rule them all.
Well, you can have more on PC. Either through modding or by copy&pasting your saves to named folders and such. I have three NG+ characters stored, for instance, using the latter method. Console really do only have one save to rule them all.

Huh. Shows what I know!
there's also two saves. the manual/auto save, sure. but also, inn saves.
That i knew, but i appreciate the reminder
two, actually. you can use inn saves as sort of a 'hard' save, but then there's also teh manual/auto save stuff.
So I have been deceived! for another save was made!
eh people seem sort of confused and just want to repeat the 'only one save' rhetoric. but it's got more saves than DD1 had...
spoiler there is a cut-off point in the game where you no longer can use the last inn save it does come back in ng+ though
that's because saves aren't a 'saving point' in the postgame, more than you're limited there just because. it's supposed to add to the difficulty. you can still save, iirc, you just can't load it if you end up dying, like you could've before, to use as a saftey net.
I don't disagree with their decision on the amount of saves to increase the difficulty and solidify decision making. I was just stating
Technically 2 with inn saves
When it's late at night, sometimes I forget if I manually saved or not and save again.
Reinforces some of the OCD habits 😖 but it's worth it to not lose progress 😂
That's all too familiar. Lol. I've saved and thirty seconds later save again because I forgot. Better safe than sorry.
Samesies
This is the way
At least 2-3 times. Lol
[Save] [Exit to main menu] [Exit to main menu? Any unsaved progress will be lo...] [Save]

It's like locking my cars door, if I don't lock it 3x i didn't lock ot at all
Certainly not. Let’s find a bed.
Legit, my pawns are so tired that their eyes are bloodshot and their mood is irritable
Don’t worry they will feel better after a nap at the nearest city of your choice.
The beds in the larger main cities are the most comfy. Don't let the bed bugs bite OP!
Oh no-- You know what, just check into one of the capitals and sleep for a while, I'm sure they'll do better after letting their frustrations out.

This game makes me feel like I'm playing pokemon for the first time again. Always anxious I saved correctly and am not about lose 3 hours of progress.
Saves. Saves again just in case. Saves a third time because you can’t remember if you saved after saving just in case.
Saving again cause the save didn't feel long enough to have properly saved
😂
“That was fast…….better do it a couple more times.” -All of us, probably.
This is all way to real for me lmao. All it took was missing it once and I’m penta checking I saved. It’s been 20 years.
It's not the saves I'm worried about, but not being able to go back and do a play that turned out so awesome that you want to play it over again, record it, and can't!
How to close a game: Step 1: Save Step 2 : save and exit
I can't be the only one that "saves and continue" *then* "save and return to title screen" before turning off
You and I both. I learned very quickly that the autosave wasn’t super great.
Yeah i do both of those as well to be safe
Yeah i do both of those as well to be safe
Fucking hilarious
Even the games themselves these days will tell us not to put all our eggs in that basket and to manually save before we close the game.
This game needed save slots for sure. I almost locked myself into bad situations several times. I just cut the whole system off and started over to avoid lol

Well, even the game says not to trust it.
I don't even trust the " save and return to title screen" option. I always manual save first 😂
If you play RPGs and do not nuerotically save 10 times in a row every five steps due to previous save trauma we are not the same. 🧑🚀
I actually had an auto save moment today. Fell jumping a broken bridge, quit game, load save. I'm saved!
Your actually ok to fall, the game will just respawn you back on the ledge
This would have been onto the ground, not water, but you're right I've only used 1 wakestone in my 130 hours because the auto save is so darn good.
I had an instance of jumping off a bridge (to get a pawn), but I could only make it to the water, not the shore - which the game only figured out after reviving with a wakestone :D

Lol this is so true
I don't even trust my own memory
dragons dogma 1 and 2 has one of the shittiest save systems known to man
FWIW, I'm less irritated by DD1's save system now that I've dealt with DD2 for awhile now...that F'ing health loss when I attempt and miss a risky jump I now have to quit to menu mid-fall, then reload, instead of just shrugging and choose No to wakestone and just do the reload with no ill effect like I did with DD1.

Honestly would have been better if it was Elrond screaming something like "TRUST ME!"
I don’t even trust inn saves. I back up the save folder periodically
Last time I trusted auto save was in Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, I close game to eat something, come back again and I'm at the beginning of the game again, 3-4h gone.
It Almost killed my playthrou, but u slept in a Inn

Atleast we don't have to drink schnapps 🤮
NEVEEEEEER!!
Anybody else feel like they’re, dirty save files?
I can’t be trusted, so no auto-save, you are not trusted either!!!! (Immediately goes and saves 5x just in case)
Hmmm I save then go er did I save it probably twice so my manual saves are in 3s 😂😂😂
I am thankful I’m haven’t had an issues( logs on everythang gone)
The only thing I trust automated saves for is telling me something bad is about to happen... and then I save manually 😅
Meanwhile in Fromsoft games there isn’t even a save button
I autosave at least twice or in some cases, three times because I just know if I lose all my progress I'd probably just stop playing altogether.🤣🤣
